November 1:-Zelgadis/Amelia: Scent as an erotic element- Amelia accidentally falls into a barrel of an experimental perfume. Now, every man is attracted to her and Zel has to keep them. It doesn't help that he also finds the scent to be irresistible.
As usual, Lina was to blame for this entire fiasco that ended with them waking up curled in the inn’s basement, both naked, and rather uncomfortable for reasons of coldness, general awkwardness of what had occurred, and that they had to face the others soon. That they’d have to move on with their lives, and neither knew whether to act like nothing had occurred, or to reassure the other that they didn’t want to continue on in a state of denial. But they didn’t say anything, instead focusing on finding where their clothes had been thrown.
In their haste.
Oh, gods, he was remembering what he’d said, barely away of his pants falling down mid-thigh, of Amelia’s own whimpers and groans, holding her hips to pull her closer, not caring about her own safety. Small hands clawing at his mantle, at his tunic, at his bare skin. His frantic, breathless own cries, over and over again, saying tha--
His mind closed around his thoughts like a steel trap. Zelgadiss focused on hating Lina for putting them through this. At least the frantic way Gourry had—no, that was a double-edged sort of revenge. . He rubbed at a shoulder. Any second, Amelia would probably begin yelling at him, right? What he’d done deserved at least a punch to the face.
Instead, she just shied away from even his stare, “Um, the spell’s off right?”
He tried not to grimace. All he could smell was different jams that clung in the air, and wafting of onions from a nearby bin. “Yes. It’s gone.”
Amelia tugged on her boot with new-found gusto. “Thank the gods! Finally we can leave. I mean, I was afraid we’d be stuck here, all night.”
With him. Zelgadiss cringed. “Right. Now we can go.”
How she must have hated him for this—then she was skipping towards the door, catching his hand in the process to lead him along. Ah. Uh. “Come on, Zelgadiss!”
No ‘Mister’? He could only stare at her. Really?
She yanked his hand more strongly than before. “We need to go find Miss Lina and Mister Gourry.”
So, she still used that title--but not for him. As a sign of further intimacy, or because he wasn’t worthy of it? The hand touching wasn’t helping answer any questions. She’d always been an affectionate girl, and maybe she wanted him close as a shield. Perfect sense.
At the doorway, she stood on tiptoes to kiss his chin. “Thank you. For, you know, helping hide me.”
“Uh. No problem.”
Then Amelia turned on her heel, and nearly skipping out. Still dragging him along.
--On the other hand, it was amazing he’d lasted as long as he’d had. His sense as a chimera were heightened compared to a normal humans, and the experimental perfume she’d fallen into, a combination of her old clumsiness and Lina’s push. The crack of wood as the top of the barrel broke and in fell Amelia, that splash that had made Zelgadiss go cold, thinking of the variety of acids there were available.
There was humming from Amelia, right now, as she led him further on. Her smile was such a brave thing.
Lina had laughed her head off, at first, at the sight of Amelia nearly drowning in that barrel, little hands scrambling for the sides, and the alchemist had shrieked that no, that was meant to attract men, and even squirt of it was too strong.
Zelgadiss had been driven closer to her, the smell wrapping itself around his brain, around the limbic system, and he’d pulled Amelia out of the barrel. Then Gourry had thrown himself forward at Amelia, to Lina’s howl and Zelgadiss’ unsheathing his sword. That he’d nearly beaten his old male friend, for the first time, and how he’d thrown Amelia over his shoulder and leapt through the doorway.
How men in the streets had slowly turned to look at Amelia. Glazed eyes. He’d barely noticed her shrieking and pumbling his shoulder in a way that still made it ache, even now. Her yelling at him to put her down right this moment, to stop being so weird, and then he was fighting off the guys crowding around. Even waving around the sword hadn’t been enough to detract them, and then, more and more men were coming closer.
Now, he couldn’t remember where the idea for hiding in the inn had come from. Perhaps in the back of his mind, he’d seen the basement entrance, and only in that moment of duress recalled its existence. Zelgadiss had dragged her there, Amelia freaking out and actually relieved to be with him for safety. He’d brought here down here, the drugged part of his brain not even thinking of the clichés, and…ruined everything.
Their friendship, their closeness, the trust. After Rezo’s death, he had thought he’d escaped becoming a berserker ever again.
But in that dark little room, he’d lost his mind. The things that looked down on them, the old vegetable and jars like something Eris might have been involved with but for the smell. Just like being back there in one of Rezo’s laboratories.
But this time, he’d spilled his guts. Told her that since, no, before Gaav and Phibrizo, he’d felt so strongly for her, dreamt of this moment, to have her there with him. Just told her things that he hadn’t articulated in his own head so clearly. That now were so shameful he couldn’t even blush. It was a moral, mortal blow.
Her dark head darted around as she looked for any people before pulling open the basement door. All the innocence and goodness that was in his life, in off-white and turquoise boots. She would act like nothing was wrong, hiding her fears of him, denying what had happened, until everything corroded between them. Like his self control and defenses that had crumbled as he’d pulled her into his arms like he’d wanted to do for so long, with no more pretenses of safety, or distractions.
The things he’d never wanted to say just lingered between them, like a faint smell of sweat and onions and strawberries.
“Amelia, I’m sorry,” Zelgadiss began. Now, now of course he couldn’t think of anything to say.
But she seemed amused. Always eager to brush things aside with a smile, rather than blow them up, like his other female friends. “It’s okay. Really. Okay, maybe it wasn’t so—well, it wasn’t the best place, or the best circumstances, but really. It’s okay. Mister Zelgadiss?”
“You’re okay with what happened? Really, really okay? Because I want you to tell me if I hurt you.”
“Oh no,” Amelia, the second princess of Saillune, who arguably shouldn’t have even been on this crazy trip, shook her head. Her plum colored hair was still mussed, but Zelgadiss couldn’t tell her that. That voice that could drive him up the wall, or be nothing but a source of comfort was soft. “Actually, I don’t know whether or not to thank Lina.”
“Better to err on the side of experience, and don’t thank her.” His words were glib, empty.
“I guess.” Amelia touched her chin, and looked up to him. This woman who’d been so close to him, in so many ways. “And, um, if you want, I could yell at her. You know, tell her that I’m so angry for what happened. If you want.”
“I suppose.”
There was something softening her face, like a blow. “So, you’d prefer if we just…pretend this never happened?”
“I didn’t say that. I thought you didn’t want to talk about it?”
“Oh, no, I didn’t mind. Yes, it wasn’t romantic, or all that nice. But I think it’s more important that it finally happened.” ‘Finally,’ her eyes seemed to emphasize. Finally.
“How about this,” his throat was tight with relief that weakened his stiff shoulders. “We’ll buy Lina some flowers, as thanks.”
“Then beat her with it?”
“Yes. And then maybe spray her with that perfume, and stick her and Gourry into a room.”
“Zelgadiss,” she laughed. “That’s too mean.
“…though, that would solve a lot of problems. Maybe we can even use it for Filia and Xellos?”
“But which one of them would we spray perfume on?”
Amelia took his hand, gingerly patting it. “Now that really is mean. Okay, ready to leave?”
