Disclaimer: I do now own the character's, their names or appearances and I make no profit from this. I do not own Hetalia either. |
As I said, this is AU, the character's are not countries. No sex in this chapter, that won't be for a while, but there will be lots of sexual things in chapter three, just not actual sex...Nothing bad but violence in this chapter. This is really just a prologue...
A witness box was no place for a boy just off being 6 years old, but there stood a trembling blond boy, a lawyer in a fancy suit standing in front of him, trying to keep the boy from clamming up or panicking. What he’d seen was important, and the lawyer needed his testimony to win this.
“Now Matthew, I need you to answer very carefully.”
Matthew had been hearing those words so much lately, or variations of it. This lawyer had used them a few times, the police had used them before that, and before that his father had said the same thing when Matthew when he’d run home a month ago, crying and nearly panicking while screaming to his father about a monster killing someone.
“You said before that you saw Mister Braginsky hurt Mister Fedoseev, correct?”
“Wh-who...?” He asked hesitantly, the names too complicated and strange to remember. He was shown two photos that had been presented to the judge earlier and the man explained which was which.
Matthew nodded.
“Matthew, I need you to actually say your answer.”
“O-ok...U-um, yes. I-I saw Mister B-Bag...Um, Bagski hurt um...M-mister...Um, the-the other man.”
“This one?” He asked, pointing at the photo and earning a soft nod from Matthew then a hasty ‘yes’. “Ok, and can you tell me more about it?”
“U-um...” He began shaking a little more, clearly closed to clamming up.
“Matthew, you have to be really brave and tell me what happened. Just pretend it’s just you, and me ok? Just ignore everyone else in this room and just tell me what you saw.”
Matthew didn’t quite follow the lawyer’s advice. Instead he sought out his adopted twin’s comfort. Normally Alfred wouldn’t have been let in, but Arthur had made it happen, explaining that there was no way Matthew would get through the trial without his twin. Arthur was a high-ranking police officer, so the other police had listened and grudgingly let the hyperactive boy in.
When Matthew’s eyes found his twin his twin gave him the thumbs up and a stupid grin and Matthew turned his attention back to the lawyer. “U-um. H-he, um, M-mister Bagski was holding a metal thing, l-like from the bathroom.” He was uncertain, the word for the ‘metal thing’ not one he was used to using.
The lawyer requested a photo and showed it to Matthew. “Was it like this metal pipe?”
Matthew nodded. “Y-yeah. I-it looked just like that one.”
“You’re being very brave. What did Mister Braginski do with the pipe?”
Matthew had to look over at his twin again to gain the courage to say it. Matthew clasped his hands in his lap and looked down at them, nervous. “H-he hit the man.”
“With the pipe?”
“Y-yes.”
“Where did Mister Braginski hit the other man?”
Matthew mumbled out his answer and the lawyer gave him an encouraging smile that he only just saw as he looked intently at his hands. “Matthew, I need you to speak up a bit. Can you do that for me?”
“H-he hit the other man on the head.”
“Ok, then what happened Matthew?”
Matthew’s eyes darted up to the lawyer’s then down at his lap and only his father caught the sign that he was lying. “I-I ran away.”
“Ok, so all you saw was Mister Braginski,” here he pointed to Ivan’s photo, still lying in front of Matthew, “hit Mister Fedoseev,” again he pointed to the said man’s photo, “with this pipe,” he pointed to the photo, “on the head before you ran away, correct?”
Matthew nodded, tears prickling at his eyes. He hated lying, but he couldn’t say what he’d seen. It was too scary, too gruesome. He hadn’t even gotten it out to his father. Matthew hadn’t run away. He’d stayed, frozen to the spot as Ivan beat the man long after he was dead until he was an unidentifiable mess, or at least he would have been unidentifiable mess if it weren’t for DNA. Even dental records stood no chance with how Ivan kept hitting the head long after the features had been crushed. The sounds haunted Matthew, and he saw he’d heard Ivan humming a lullaby as he beat the other man with a metal pipe.
The prosecutors had little case left to cling to by the end. Matthew had picked Ivan out of a line up, and Fedoseev was the same, only it was from a series of photos. Matthew had been standing close, just barely hidden by the corner of a shop, but mostly by Ivan’s intent focus.
There was one question that silenced the quiet boy for a while. He’d been told by Arthur not to talk about how he and Papa, Matthew’s other father often fought. He remembered that at the police station Arthur had explained that it was ok in this situation, that so long as he didn’t tell everyone at school it was fine. Arthur didn’t want his two adopted sons to be bullied for having two fathers. It was hard enough on them that their father’s were broken up.
Eventually he was no longer needed and the next day the court reached it’s verdict. Ivan Braginski was guilty of murder. He would serve 10 years in an English prison before being released back to Russia.
10 years is not such a long time really.
