This is my very first story, so please be nice.

Chapter 1
Blessing in Disguise
└----------------------------┘
I can’t keep relying on Nii-chan like I am. How could I let him do all the hard work while I’m just sitting here?
Those were the thoughts that had haunted Misaki’s mind three months ago, when his brother was complaining to himself about the little amount of money they had left. Takahiro always worked hard, yet they were still short of money. It had been like that ever since Misaki had announced that he wanted to go to Mitsuhashi University, which wasn’t exactly the cheapest university in Tokyo. While his intentions were good, his brother had a hard time accepting his choice. They had just enough money to pay the rent and buy themselves food, so how was he going to save up money for something like college?
Misaki knew that his brother was troubled. He had overheard everything Takahiro had muttered to himself at night and it made him feel guilty. His brother had already done so much for him...he didn’t want to take advantage of his kindness. No, if he wanted to get into University, he would have to get the money on his own.
And with that, the teen decided to go find a suitable job during summer break. At first, he wasn’t sure what kind of job to get, since he didn’t have a preference of some sort.
Let’s see. I should just do something that I’m good at, so probably something with housework or cooking. Working at the restaurant could be an option, but I don’t think they’ll hire someone as inexperienced as me.
While searching for job offers and advertisements on the internet, a small article caught Misaki’s attention. It was written by some wealthy American guy who had moved to Japan after getting married to a Japanese fashion model. Apparently, the family was in need of a maid, or anyone who was capable of cleaning, cooking and doing laundry.
Misaki’s pointer finger slowly rolled over the scroll wheel as he read the offer carefully. The man actually didn’t live too far away, and there were still openings left for a job interview.
I guess that it’s all right as long as the pay is good. The brunet thought, clicking his tongue a few times as he was debating whether to give it a try or not. He didn’t have anything to lose, so why not?
Without giving it a second thought, Misaki clicked the button to get an appointment for a job interview. After writing his curriculum vitae—for this, he had found a template on the internet—he applied for the job and rose from his chair. He smiled faintly as he turned off the computer. Nii-chan will be happy if I get a job. I’m sure of it.

Two weeks later

“Nii-chan, I’m back!” Misaki yelled enthusiastically as he practically ran inside. When his brother entered the hallway, his grin widened and he hugged him. His unusual behavior caused Takahiro to frown in confusion.
“What’s the matter? I’ve never seen you so happy before.” The older of the two tried to pull back, but Misaki’s embrace only grew tighter. “Where have you been? You didn’t tell me that you were going out.”
Emerald eyes stared at Takahiro as Misaki released him. “Well, I wanted to surprise you.” He replied, his grin having turned into a small smile. Of course he didn’t want to worry his brother, but at the same time he didn’t want him to find out.
“So what is the surprise?”
“I got myself a job!”
Takahiro’s eyes widened so much that they could’ve popped out of his sockets. “What? When did you apply for one? What kind of job is it?” Countless questions came from his lips as he studied his brother with disbelief. “You’re not joking, are you?”
Misaki shook his head and then took the man’s hand. Dragging him along, they sat down in the living room and Misaki explained everything. Takahiro was so happy that he could hardly hear any of the things that his brother said. He’s growing up so fast. I can’t believe that he’s already becoming such an independent young man!
“I’m starting next week.” Misaki said with a smile.
“That’s really soon. Are you sure that you’re okay with that though?”
“Why shouldn’t I be? I’m glad that I can get to it so quickly. To be honest, I’m rather excited too.” The couch dipped a little as Misaki kept bouncing mildly, unable to keep still. “I’ve read that the family is very wealthy, so I’m sure their house is incredibly large and luxurious.”
Takahiro smiled faintly, although he was starting to get worried. Misaki was a good boy, generally polite and friendly, but he had never met any high-class people. What if he doesn’t know how to act around them?
“Nii-chan, what’s wrong?”
“I’m just…very surprised. I really didn’t see this coming, but I’m glad.” He should be fine. Misaki doesn’t get himself into trouble that easily.
Or that’s what Takahiro thought…

One week later
└---------------------┘
Takahiro stared at his brother absentmindedly as he carried his luggage to the hall. There were two dark blue suitcases, one with clothes and essentials and the other with things that Misaki desperately wanted to take with him. As excited as Takahiro tried to be, he knew that he was going to miss the brunet. Because of his new job, Misaki would get a guest room at his master’s house. That meant that he wouldn’t see his brother as much as usual.
“Are you sure you haven’t forgotten anything?”
Misaki rolled his eyes at his brother’s overprotectiveness. Is he still thinking of me as a child? I’m nearly eighteen years old! I can take care of myself. He slowly turned around to face Takahiro and noticed that he looked a bit down. Emitting a soft sigh, he walked over to him.
“I’m going to miss you too.” He muttered softly, trying not to become too sentimental. He knew what Takahiro was thinking and he understood that perfectly, but this was for the best. At least he had a good job for the time being. Once summer break was over, he would get back home with the money he’d earned and they would be a happy reunited family.
Takahiro ruffled the boy’s soft brown hair. “Please promise me that you’ll be careful.”
“Nii-chan, you’re worrying too much. I’ll be fine.”
“Please…just promise me.” Takahiro’s pleading voice echoed through the narrow hallway as his hazel eyes looked at Misaki.
Sighing again, the brunet simply nodded. Seeing this made his brother smile, and he was just about to give the other a hug when the doorbell rang. Hurriedly, Misaki sprinted to the door a opened up. He was met with a tall, yet rather old man. His hair was shaded black and grey, and his eyes were brown and friendly-looking.
“Arima at your service. I’m here to pick you up, Takahashi-kun.” Given Misaki’s position as a domestic worker, Arima didn’t need to be overly polite towards the teen.
“Ah, you must be the driver!” Misaki said, smiling kindly at the man. “Thank you very much for coming. Could I say goodbye to my brother before we leave?”
The old driver smiled. “Of course you may. I will take your suitcases to the car while you get ready.” He took both suitcases in his hands and Misaki nodded, bowing slightly to show his gratitude. While Arima went back outside, Takahiro approached his younger brother and wrapped his arms around him.
“Well then, I guess this is goodbye.” He said softly, his voice tainted with sadness.
Misaki frowned as he looked up to meet Takahiro’s gaze. “You make it sound like I’m never coming back. Don’t worry, it’s only a month and then I’ll be home, safe and sound.” As the brunet wriggled to free himself, Takahiro slowly let go of him.
“Take care, Misaki.”
Standing right in front of the doorway, Misaki glanced over his shoulder. “You too, Nii-chan.” He spoke before walking out and closing the door behind him. Deep inside, he was a little sad to leave the house for so long, but he brushed it off. It would all be worth it in the end.
Walking in the sun, Misaki soon spotted the shiny black car that was parked near the apartment. Cocking an eyebrow at the sight, he started to tremble a little at the thought that the family must have plenty of those cars at the mansion. Wait, this is not the time to get myself all worked up and nervous. He picked up the pace, noticing that Arima was holding the door for him. Smiling sweetly at the man, he got into the car and watched as Arima took the driver’s seat.
“Are you all ready to go, Takahashi-kun?”
Misaki nodded as he met Arima’s gaze in the rear-view mirror, giving him the sign that they could head for the mansion. He leaned back as the rays of the sun caressed his face and listened to the sound of the engine. It was pleasantly warm that day, a perfect start of summer break.
The buildings quickly passed by, but were soon replaced by the sight of tall trees. Misaki’s master lived in the forest, not too far from away from the city, but still far enough to give the family the right amount of privacy.
“I must admit that I’m surprised.” At the sound of Arima’s voice, Misaki sat up and looked into the mirror again. “You are the very first male housekeeper Honda-sama has ever hired.”
“Are you saying that there have only ever been maids working at the mansion?” Misaki asked, tilting his head in confusion.
“Well, yes. Honda-sama doesn’t seem to be too fond of other men working around his house, except for the gardener and his drivers. That’s why I was very surprised to find out that you’re a guy. When I first heard your name, I thought that you were a girl.”
Hey, I can’t help it that I have a girls’ name! Misaki screamed in his head, but he covered it with a nervous laugh. First impressions were very important, after all.
“I think that you have impressed him very much during your job interview, or he simply likes you a lot.” Arima focused on the road while he kept talking to the brunet in the back. “You should know that Honda-sama doesn’t always care about the capability of his workers.”
“What do you mean?”
“There has been a maid who didn’t even know how to cook rice, let alone make a proper meal.” Upon hearing this, Misaki’s eyes widened. What kind of man would hire a girl that didn’t know how to cook? What was the use of getting a maid like that?
I wonder what the real reason is why master hired me. He knows that I’m not a girl, right?
Misaki got too lost in his thoughts to hear the rest of Arima’s story, and he rested his head against the window on his left, staring into nothingness. Until they had arrived at their destination, he would only think to himself, completely oblivious to his surroundings.
Completely oblivious to what was important.

A/N: Arima and Misaki’s master are both OCs, so don’t worry if you don’t know the characters. I made them up myself.
Usagi will appear in the story too, later on. Please tell me what you think of it so far.
