It had been a busy day at the Rainsworth house. Decorations had been put up in lue of their Annual dinner that was scheduled in 3 days. Sharon stretched as she walked through to find the hatter she was so fond of. He had a bad habit of hiding from formal events unless he had been ordered to do so. Turning into one room he found Gilbert practicing adding ribbons to the braids in Alice’s hair.
“Have you seen break?” She showcases her normal grin. Alice shook her head quickly having her head pulled back to its original position.
“I saw him earlier; He mentioned something about the library.” Gil mumbled with the brush in his mouth.
“How can the stupid clown read? I thought he was bind!” Alice spoke, sarcasm touching her voice. Sharon simply bowed before leaving in that direction.
Once she rounded the corner she noticed Liam entering with a blanket and pillow in hand. He stopped when he saw her and bowed.
“Is he in there?”
“Yea but… Well I wasn’t supposed to say anything…” He started looking down. She tilted her head questioning. “He hasn’t been sleeping well. Your grandmother moved me to sleep in his room cause of his eye problem. He’s been waking up every few hours and it always seems as if he is disoriented and panicked. It looks like night terrors, this morning he almost stabbed me. He was also messing with his eye socket that he keeps covered. Ever since he woke up this morning he seemed on edge” Sharon frowned with worry.
“Go get my mother…” She ordered grabbing the items from him. Reim nodded before turning to fetch Shelly. Sharon crept into the room shutting the door behind her. It was fairly large with plenty of plush furniture for people to relax. She noticed a white hair peeking out from atop one of the long sofas and found break curled up in the the long sofa. Liam’s jacket was tucked around him from when Liam found him earlier.
“Idiot...” She grumbled tossing the blanket on him. When she touched his head, her arm was grabbed and wretched behind her back as she was slammed onto the couch. Above her a mincing face was staring down at her. His dull eye was almost glowing red and his normally welcoming face was much darker.
“Ow…” She whimpered in pain. Break stared at her before his face changed straight to horror at what he just had done. He quickly released her arm and fell back.
“I’m so sorry Ms. Sharon, are you okay?!” He exclaimed worried about what he had just done. She rubbed her arm sniffling slightly.
“Break you have been acting strange lately. Liam is getting my mom so she can help you.” Break tensed. He had just hurt Shelly’s daughter and he could hear it in her voice. Shelly was sure to murder him when she arrived. His attention went towards the door hearing two sets of footsteps walk in.
“Good evening… Honey are you okay?” Shelly asked noticing her beloved daughter looking bewildered. Breaks breath hitched, he was going to surely die now.
“Yea.. I didn’t know he was waking up when I put the blanket on him and we smacked heads.” She said rubbing her head smiling. The white haired male wilted.
“Ah okay... as long as you are okay, is all I ask. Do you mind, I would like to chat with him alone.” She asked smiling. Liam and Sharon bowed and then they quickly abandoned the room.
A weight pressed down near break and he felt arms wrap around him. Shelly had been so kind to him in the past and the one person he now considered special. She didn’t have to take him in but she did and left him to do as we wished as long as her daughter or staff wasn’t harmed.
“What has been going on in that brain of yours?” She asked stroking him gently. He nuzzled into the embrace and hesitantly wrapped his arms around her.
“I can’t sleep. My contract has been feeling weird and I’ve been dreaming … “he paused. “ Constantly been dreaming about the Abyss. This morning I had arrived to my old household and found my master and his daughter murdered… the murderers were still around the bodies.” He squeezed tighter.
“It is about that time of year when you came to us.” She said with a gentle tone.
“Yea… “He sounded dejected. “If only I had been there… they would have lived.” He gritted his teeth at the thought. If only he was there… but what would had happened to Sharon? Shelly sat him up removing his neck tie and opening his shirt to look at his contract.
“There is nothing different about that from what I can see, so we are going to assume that you have been experiencing an anxiety problem that has been building up over the years. Remember the past is the past and you can never change that. I’m sure the head of your former residence would tell you to move on.” She traced his contract to double check that nothing had been changed. “I want you to sleep in my room for the next few days. That way we all can sleep and you don’t hurt my daughter again.” Break paused; she knew and hadn’t killed him?
“Sorry…” he mumbled looking down. She kissed his forehead after redressing him.
“No worries. Free pass this time, but do it again and I assure you that you will learn what true pain is!” Break visibly shuddered at the coldness that touched the end of the sentence. “If you desire, you can sleep in my room now. No one will bother you there and it’s a cool area.” She stood up and patted his head. Break gave a poorly forced smile before grabbing his cane and getting up to do what she asked. He paused before opening the door turning his head slightly attempting to figure out where she was in the room.
“If you don’t mind me asking, what ever happened to your late husband?” He heard a chuckle.
“He left a long time ago…” Shelly’s voice lighted.
“Do you look for him?”
“No reason to… He left because…well you know yourself how red eyed people are looked at as. Besides I’m glad he found someone who he doesn’t have to be suspicious of all the time.” She paused before chuckling again “Arrange marriages are a bitch.” Break scoffed with a laugh as the thought of her cussing. As he opened the door, four bodies poured on to them each with a glass in hand.
“Hi mom!” Sharon squeaked in surprise. Break stared at the heap of colors before him. Judging by colors alone Sharon, Oz, Alice and Gilbert were listening in.
“Before you ask, I was worried…” Gilbert scrambled to his feet. Oz and Alice stared at the hatter.
“Hey clown… What’s wrong? Can’t find your candy dish?” Alice laughed. Break did not look amused with her. Shelly scowled at the two freezing them in their place.
“Xerxes, go relax, I’m having a tea party this evening and would love for you to join me.” Break softly nodded before leaving. As soon as he was clear, Shelly’s attention diverted to the rest of them. “You all were doing one of the things I dislike most. Put on some old clothing and meet me out by the barn.” Sharon scratched her head. Unlike most nobles Shelly wasn’t afraid to punish her children.
The weather was muggy when the four reached the barn. Shelly greeted them with shovels and brushes.
“Alright you all know you should never eavesdrop on anyone’s conversation. I know you are worried about him but I assure you that he is fine. On to the punishment there are 4 horse pins that need to be cleaned and 4 horses to be groomed. You all shall pair up and take on one task each. Gil and Alice both of you will work together on two horses and two stalls. Sharon you are to work with Oz on the other. I expect it done by dusk.” She ordered handing the tools over and walking towards the house. Alice punched Gil quickly grabbed the brushes.
“Why did you leave me?” Break turned around. A small girl with curly blonde locks was staring at him. Her gown was coated in blood and tears were pouring down her face. It was his former master’s daughter. But why could he see her so well? He looked down at his sleeve which was colored green.
“I didn’t…” He stated
“You DID. You betrayed our family and moved onwards to another family.” He paused at those words. The child was grinning. Something that looked just like someone he had met before. Upon closer inspection two blood red eyes emerged.
“Your time is nearing Kevin…. Or had you forgotten?” Break shook his head. His deteriorating eye sight was a constant reminder.
“No… I remember. Can you give me an approximant time so I can go somewhere where I can go in peace?” He sat down so he could see her eye to eyes. She paused. Guessing games were fun for her yet this guy wasn’t giving her any resistance like most before him have. She quickly joined him set herself down in front of him.
“You’re a strange one. Most would put up a monstrous fight knowing they were going to die.” She giggled before cupping his face. “I’ll make you a deal… bring me something I can cherish and I shall allow you to live out your days with the Rainsworth family.” She said stroking his hair. “Afterwards we shall have tea parties here. It gets quite lonely….” She said before standing up. He looked up at 3 slender fingers were held up as the world went black. “Bye!” She grinned before completely vanishing. He startled awake to the chimes of the clock.
“Almost tea time...” He said to himself. He forced himself to calm down, before getting up and straightening himself out as he walked out.
