The Carnival Returns
“So you're back, huh?”
Ayeka looked around at the familiar voice. Ryoko was lounging against the door to her chamber like the personification of a casual yawn.
“How did you get in here?” Ayeka said.
Ryoko shrugged. “The door was open. Besides, it isn't like this would have been the first Juraian ship I've broken into. Or out of.”
“I could well believe it,” Ayeka sniffed.
“Hey, now, is that any way to say hello to an old...acquaintance?” Ryoko strolled into the room. “I only came here to be nice, you know. I must say, you made it back even faster than I'd expected.”
“You knew I was coming? How?”
Ryoko shrugged. “Call it an educated guess. Besides, you're possibly the only person in the galaxy more stubborn than me, and I know what I'd have done had I been marooned on some planet in the backwoods of the universe...”
“Planet Jurai is not some 'backwater'!” Ayeka objected. “Besides, I had a lot to do there! Kagato's coup caused a great deal of disruption and someone had to be there to put it all right again!”
“And you've done it already? Quick work, princess.” Ryoko paused. “Unless...it all went south again and you had to get out of there fast. I note that Azaka and Kamidake aren't here. Either of them.”
Ayeka folded her arms primly. “All the plans are in place and already underway. I have appointed my uncle to act as Regent in my place until I return, and Azaka and Kamidake have been appointed to watch over Sasami now.”
“You're sure of that?” Ryoko cocked an eyebrow. “Because this isn't the kind of ship I'd expected you to turn up in, either.”
Ayeka had to admit that it probably wasn't. The clipper she had taken was certainly Juraian, but it was built for speed rather than the majesty and comfort normally associated with the Royal Family's private fleets. Her chamber was small, with much of the space taken up by the cylindrical storage cases that held her possessions and supplies.
“Yes, well...my Ryu-Oh is still growing here on Earth, you know,” she said by way of partial explanation.
“And I suppose beggars can't be choosers,” grinned Ryoko, knowing that the phrase would rankle the proud princess. “So anyway. Welcome back. Are you pleased to see me?”
“I...” Ayeka hesitated. “I...have to admit that I wondered what had become of you. I heard that you just disappeared after you assaulted the palace.”
“I guess I needed a break,” Ryoko shrugged.
“But you never came back,” Ayeka said. “I had people looking for you, you know. And the GXP issued an all-planets bulletin for you.”
Ryoko shrugged again. “You can't find me when I don't want to be found.”
“Even Nagi came back to see if you'd returned to Jurai,” said Ayeka. “I thought she was going to tear the palace apart when I told her there was no sign of you.”
“Is that so? How very sweet of her.” Ryoko smiled wryly. “I had no idea she cared.”
Ayeka, who had already come to certain conclusions about the bounty hunter's motivations, smiled. “Well, she was rather disappointed. Apparently you agreed to fight her after we defeated Kagato.”
Ryoko tapped a finger on her cheek as if thinking deeply. “Now that you mention it, I may have said something like that.”
“It does sound like something you'd say, doesn't it,” Ayeka agreed “And then you vanished. I do hope it wasn't to avoid her.”
“Hah! Don't flatter her,” Ryoko scoffed. “I could take her any day of the week.”
“Yes, I do think that was her plan,” Ayeka murmured. “But if we could return to the topic at hand, Ryoko, whatever happened to you?”
“Actually, princess, I think the more pressing topic is why you, after being restored to your throne, came halfway across the galaxy by yourself and fetched up back here,” Ryoko said. “Not that I don't know why, but I'd like to hear you say it.”
Ayeka went pink again. “I'm...I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about, Ryoko...”
“Sure you don't.” Ryoko stepped closer and watched her face carefully. Ayeka backed away, trying to look wide-eyed and innocent.
“Really, Ryoko, I...”
Ryoko laughed. “All right, all right, I'll quit torturing you.” She turned to go and flashed a grin over her shoulder. “But he's not back from town yet, so you've got some time to settle in...”
“He?” Ayeka's blush deepened. “You mean Lord Tenchi?”
“Who do you think I meant?” Ryoko grinned. “Come on, Ayeka, there's no need to pretend. I know how you feel about us but I'm not so conceited as to think you'd come all this way just to see little old me again.”
Ayeka turned away and pretended to sort through the contents of one of her cases so that the pirate couldn't see her face.
“Well, no. Of course not. I didn't even know you were here.”
“Would you still have come back even if you had?”
“Yes.” Ayeka whispered. “Of course I would.”
Ryoko watched her for a moment, and then nodded.
“All right, then. You can have tonight.”
“Tonight?”
“I promised Tenchi that I'd take you on fair and square for him,” Ryoko smiled. “And, though Nagi may not believe it, I do take my promises seriously when I make them to someone dear to me.”
Ayeka turned her head, a small smile on her profile. “You do have that as a redeeming quality.”
“And I've been here alone with Tenchi waiting for you for some time now,” Ryoko went on. “So...I suppose it's only fair that I let you catch up. I'll take Ryo-Okhi as well, don't worry. You'll have as much time as you need.”
“That's...uncharacteristically sporting of you, Ryoko,” Ayeka said.
“It'll be the last time I cut you a break, though,” Ryoko grinned. “So you'd better make it count.”
“I will.” Ayeka nodded. “I promise. I've spent a great deal of time thinking of it...of my return to Earth.”
“Is that so?” Ryoko cocked her head. “Well...good luck, princess. I mean it.”
“You do?” Ayeka was surprised.
Ryoko nodded. “A fair fight, just like I said.”
“Oh. Well...thank you.” Ayeka watched her leave. “And Ryoko?”
“Hmm?” The pirate stopped at the doorway and looked back. Ayeka gave her a small, shy smile.
“I'm...very glad to know that you're alive.”
Ryoko flashed her a grin. “Me too, princess. Me too.”
Tenchi opened the screen door. The sun was setting behind the hills already, casting long shadows across the lake.
“I'm home!”
He waited for a moment, bracing himself. His return usually prompted one of two things – a greeting from his father if he was home from work and already in the kitchen, or a sudden materialisation next to him by Ryoko for a rather more hands-on greeting. But this time, it was absolutely silent as he took off his high-collared black jacket and tucked it under his arm. Frowning, he took off his white shoes and padded across the entranceway landing.
“Er...hello? Dad? Grandpa? Ryoko? Ryo-Okhi?”
He peered into the living room and found it deserted. In the kitchen, the stove was cold. Unsure of whether to be puzzled or worried, he started up the stairs.
“Is there anyone home? Hello?”
There was a light at the end of the corridor from one of the spare rooms. Tenchi headed towards it cautiously.
“Er...did someone leave a light on in there?”
“Um...yes...”
Tenchi jumped at the unexpected voice behind him. He span around, caught his foot on the edge of the carpet, tripped and fell the floor, bouncing off an unyielding wall along the way.
“Who are – whoa!”
His head bounced on the floor and stars burst behind his eyes at the impact. Dazed, he looked up as a figure knelt by his side and loomed over him.
“Lord Tenchi! Tenchi, are you all right?”
Recognition dawned as he heard the voice and looked up into a pair of crimson eyes that were wide with anxiety.
“A...Ayeka? Is that you?”
“Yes, Lord Tenchi, it's me. I'm so sorry, I didn't know when you would be back and I didn't hear you come in. Are you quite all right?”
Tenchi sat up, rubbing the back of his head. “Yeah, I'll survive...but what are you doing here, Ayeka? I haven't seen you since...”
He trailed off as it belatedly dawned on him that their last shared moment had not been a happy one. Ayeka looked down and nodded.
“Yes...yes, I remember it, too. But we can talk about that later. Are you sure you're all right?”
“I'm fine, really. I was just a little surprised.” Tenchi moved to stand up. “I wasn't expecting to see you. When did you arrive?”
“A few hours ago,” said Ayeka. “Don't worry, I submerged my ship in the lake so nobody will notice.”
“Oh, right...well...I guess that's all right.” A thought occurred to Tenchi. “Oh, and by the way, Ryoko and Ryo-Okhi are here as well.”
“Yes, I know.” Ayeka nodded. “Ryoko came to meet me just after I landed.”
“She did?” Tenchi looked surprised. “But the house is still here and I didn't hear any explosions on my way home...”
“No, no, she was very...” Ayeka sought for words and shook her head. “Never mind. Let me help you up, Lord Tenchi.”
She helped him to his feet, passing him his black briefcase. He took it with a grateful smile and then stood facing her for a long moment. She was wearing her sky-blue kimono, tied around her waist with a scarlet ribbon. Tenchi caught himself before his stare became too obvious and cleared his throat.
“Um...so do you need any help moving your luggage? I mean, assuming that you're staying, that is.”
“Oh, no,” Ayeka shook her head. “I mean, I don't need any help...but I would like to stay...if that's all right.”
“All right? Of course it's all right!” Tenchi smiled. “You're always welcome here.”
Ayeka felt her cheeks tingle warmly and bowed her head in thanks to hide the fact. “Thank you.”
“It's no problem.” Tenchi paused. “I'd offer you something to eat except I don't think we have anything ready. If you don't mind waiting, I could make something for us to share.”
Ayeka felt her heart skip a beat. “That's a very nice idea. Will your family be joining us?”
“No, dad's got a deadline and grandpa is preparing the shrine for the annual carnival.” Tenchi smiled. “You remember the carnival, right?”
“I certainly do.” Ayeka smiled fondly.
“So I guess it'll just be us and Ryoko,” Tenchi went on.
Ayeka blanched and looked away. “Um, actually, Ryoko said that she wouldn't be in tonight.”
“She did? Oh.” Tenchi blinked. “Did she say why?”
Ayeka blushed and tried not to let Tenchi see her face. “Um...no...just that she'd be taking Ryo-Okhi with her. I suppose they're in space.”
“I suppose so.” Tenchi sighed. “Well, so long as they're not getting into any trouble...”
“Yes, I hope not.” Ayeka hoped that Tenchi couldn't sense that she knew why the pirate had vanished.
“Well, then it looks like it really is just the two of us,” Tenchi smiled. “That'll make cooking easier. I can't promise anything much, though, I'm certainly not as good as Sasami is.”
Ayeka smiled with relief. “I'm sure it will be just fine.”
Tenchi opened his bedroom door. “I must say, I am surprised to see you back again so soon. Ryoko said you might be back, but she never said when.”
“She did?” Ayeka blinked in surprise, wondering just how much Ryoko had predicted.
“I thought you'd be busy on Jurai for ages.” Tenchi had crossed to his desk and was unpacking his textbooks neatly.
“I did everything I could,” said Ayeka. “All the arrangements are made. My uncle is acting in my place until I return. I can trust him. He was the one who helped us escape from the transit station, you remember.”
“I'm not likely to forget having to dress up as a girl,” Tenchi said ruefully. “Well, I'm glad you could find someone you could trust.”
“Yes, and I left strict instructions for the Holy Council to follow in my absence.” Ayeka stood in the doorway.
“It sounds like you've thought of everything.” Tenchi smiled at her. “Not that I'd expect anything else from you.”
Ayeka hesitated. “What...what do you mean?”
“I can't imagine you taking your duty lightly, I mean,” said Tenchi. “I know how devoted you are to Jurai and to your people. I knew you wouldn't leave again unless everything was all right. That's why I wasn't expecting to see you so soon. I guess I underestimated you, huh?”
Ayeka looked down demurely, feeling her heart racing at the compliment. “Oh, Lord Tenchi...I wouldn't say that.”
“So what did bring you back?” Tenchi asked.
“Do you really not know?” Ayeka said softly, looking up at him.
He swallowed nervously at the look in her eyes. “Um, well...I just thought...since you and Sasami were back home...”
“If only it were that simple.” Ayeka sighed. “With your permission, Lord Tenchi...may I speak candidly?”
“Uh, yeah, of course.” Tenchi watched her face carefully. “You always can with me.”
“Of course.” Ayeka looked around. “May we sit down? This could take some time.”
“Sure.” Tenchi glanced about the room and realised that his bed was the only place large enough for two people to sit. “Um...do you mind?”
Ayeka blushed slightly at the thought of sharing his bed, even if it was in the upright position. “No...that is, if it's all right with you.”
“Well, there's nowhere else,” Tenchi laughed nervously.
“No. I see that.” Ayeka watched him take a seat, leaving most of the bed free for her. She gathered her robes about her and sat next to him at what she hoped was an appropriate distance. Even so, Tenchi shifted a few inches further away when the edge of her silk kimono brushed his hand.
“So...er...” he said.
Ayeka was still looking away from him, either at the opposite wall or down at her hands folded in her lap. When she spoke, it was in a whisper.
“So very much has happened,” she said softly. “It is hard to know where to start. I've thought of this moment for so long...the moment of returning to you, of finally being able to speak what is in my heart...and yet now that it has come I hardly know where to start.”
Tenchi nodded. “It's been...eventful, I guess. There's so much we could talk about.”
“Yes.” Ayeka nodded. “There is.”
“I could always start,” Tenchi offered. “I don't think I ever thanked you properly for saving my life.”
“Thanked me for what?” Ayeka looked up in surprise.
“Don't you remember?” Tenchi smiled. “During the battle with Kagato. He had me disarmed on the ground, but then you broke free of his trap and blasted him.”
“Oh, yes.” Ayeka closed her eyes and remembered the surge of power she had summoned to overcome the energies that the false emperor had used to imprison her. She had been trained to wield the power of Jurai, of course – it was necessary to sustain her claim to the throne – but she had never felt anything like that before. The urgency of the moment had called up a capability she had never known she possessed and she had unleashed it without hesitation. “But it didn't work.”
“What do you mean?” Tenchi looked surprised. “You landed a direct hit on him.”
“It didn't stop him.” Ayeka looked down again. “He was too powerful for me. He knocked me down with a thought. Broke even my strongest shield. Threw me into the wall. He would have killed me if you hadn't stopped him in time.”
“That's no disgrace.” Tenchi smiled. “He nearly got grandpa, too, and grandpa's the toughest guy I know.”
Ayeka gave him a small smile in return. “Yosho was a mighty warrior.”
“Exactly!” Tenchi went on. “Besides, that doesn't change the fact that you still saved me. You bought me enough time to recover. And...”
“And what?” Ayeka looked up.
“And...you...well...” Tenchi began stumbling over his words. He pictured in his mind's eye that moment. When he had raised his head and seen Ayeka floating above the throne, her hair and robes billowing in the hurricane of energy she was channelling. Radiant and incandescent, a breathtaking and beautiful sight.
“Yes?”
“You...timed it well.” Tenchi finished lamely. He sought for something better to say. “Just perfectly in fact. Like my own personal guardian angel.”
“Oh, Tenchi...” Ayeka clasped her hands and felt her heart race. “What a thing to say...”
“Well, it's true,” said Tenchi encouragingly. “And looking back, I never really said thank you.”
“You risk your life to save me...to save my planet, my people...and you think that you have to thank me for anything?” Ayeka's voice wavered with emotion. “Oh, Lord Tenchi...you truly are so noble.”
Tenchi blushed. “Well, not really...I mean, what else could I have done? After what Kagato did...to grandpa and to you...”
“Was that really why you did it?”
“Well, no, not entirely.” Tenchi shook his head. “But I mean...I couldn't just leave you like that...in fact seeing what he did to you might have helped me. I was so mad...I guess it let me do things, draw on powers I didn't know I had.”
Ayeka stared at him, remembering his defiant shout even as Kagato had loomed over her, sword in hand – You won't harm Ayeka...no concern for Jurai, or for justice or even for his grandfather...knowing that her feelings for him had allowed her to summon her full powers, did this mean that he had the same kind of feelings for her?
“I never really thanked you properly, either,” Ayeka murmured. “There was so much to do...”
“Making me a Lord of Jurai has to count for something, right?” Tenchi laughed.
“That was your birthright,” Ayeka shook her head. “Nothing more.”
“My Lady Ayeka?”
She looked up as Tenchi's hand crept cross and took hold of hers. “Y...yes, Lord Tenchi?”
“I did nothing that you owe me thanks for.” Tenchi smiled.
“Oh, Tenchi.” Ayeka threaded her fingers through his. “If only you knew just how much you have done for me...”
“I...don't really understand...”
“Of course you do. You said yourself, the experiences we've had together...all of us, I mean...aren't experiences you could have had as the First Prince of Jurai. I am the First Princess, yet I have had those experiences, thanks to you. Experiences of...of...friendship and...something more...”
“You don't have to go on,” Tenchi put his other hand around hers, sensing the quaver in her voice.
Ayeka shook her head. “Yes, I do...because for so long, I waited for the perfect moment to say these things to you, Tenchi. And the perfect moment never came. It was only once I had left you that I realised what I should have known all along...that the perfect moment is not something that comes to you. It is something you must make.”
“Ayeka?”
She turned to him, her crimson eyes glistening with tears of emotion but as steady as a rock as they met his gaze.
“We have passed through fire and through blood together, Lord Tenchi. I have nothing to fear any longer.”
Ayeka leaned closer, her voice barely a whisper. “I owe everything to you. My life, my soul, and my heart...you may take of them as much or as little as you care for, but they are yours now and forever.”
“Lady Ayeka...” Tenchi swallowed hard, trying to think through the surge of feelings. “I...I don't know what to say...”
She looked up at him. “Must you say anything, Lord Tenchi?”
He held her gaze for a long moment, and finally shook his head.
“Maybe not.”
Her heart stopped in her chest as he kissed her. It was the briefest of kisses, a light brush of lip against lip, but it seemed to bring time itself to a halt.
“Oh, Tenchi...”
Ayeka raised a hand to stroke his cheek. Tenchi blushed at the touch.
“Lady Ayeka...I hope that wasn't too...um...”
“It wasn't.” Ayeka assured him. “I swear it.”
She kissed him, growing bolder when she found that he didn't pull away. She shifted on the edge of the bed to face him and deepen the kiss, still touching his cheek lightly. They broke the kiss and sat in silence, their breathing the only sound, until Tenchi touched his face and realised that his fingertips came away wet.
“Ayeka? Are you...crying?”
Ayeka's body shuddered and she collapsed into Tenchi's arms. “I'm sorry, Tenchi...please don't think less of me for it.”
“I never would, Ayeka. You know that.” Tenchi looked down at her with genuine concern. “I just want to know that you're all right.”
“I have never been happier in my life.” Ayeka smiled. “These are tears of joy, Lord Tenchi. They come from the heart.”
“Then I'll treasure them,” Tenchi held her close.
“I only hope I can give you more than tears,” Ayeka whispered. “I would give you all the stars to show what I feel.”
“Even if you could, all the stars wouldn't make me as happy as you do,” Tenchi said. “And they wouldn't be as beautiful, either.”
“Oh, my...” Ayeka closed her eyes and fresh tears rose to them. “Tenchi...how can I say anything to be worthy of that?”
Tenchi lifted her face to look into her eyes.
“Must you say anything, Lady Ayeka?”
Ayeka smiled through her tears at her words being repeated back to her so tenderly. She drew herself up to meet Tenchi's lips again and threaded her arms around him to keep him close even when they drew back from the kiss.
“Is this truly how you feel, Lord Tenchi?” Ayeka asked.
Tenchi nodded. “It has been for a while, I guess...you know I've always admired and respected you. Right from the first day we met. It...just took me a while to realise that it was more than just admiration and respect. And you know the funny thing?”
“What is it?”
Tenchi laughed. “It was when you left me that I admired you the most. The first time you left, when Sasami came for you?”
Ayeka closed her eyes and nodded. “Yes...yes, I had already given the order to jump back to Jurai...had Ryo-Okhi not rammed us, we would have gone and probably never returned.”
“Right. And when we parted on Jurai this last time?” Tenchi held her hand. “I already knew how you felt about me, because of what you'd said at the Old Summer Palace. And still you put that all aside and you did your duty.”
“It was the hardest thing I have ever done,” Ayeka murmured.
“The right things aren't always the easy things,” said Tenchi. “Grandpa taught me that. All his talk about devotion to duty, honour and sacrifice...”
“Does that mean you think I should have stayed? That I should not have come back?” Ayeka moved to draw away from him anxiously.
“Of course not.” Tenchi stayed close. “Even then, you did it right. All that stuff about appointing your uncle. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that...well, I was always taught that it was noble to serve a cause other than yourself. And your whole life has been about that.”
“I always feared that it was selfish to have such feelings for you,” Ayeka rested back against him. “That you would scorn me for being so consumed with such triviality.”
“Your happiness isn't trivial at all,” Tenchi said. “Honestly, Ayeka...why would I think badly of you for that?”
“I don't know.” Ayeka gave a small giggle that gave way to an honest, unguarded laugh. “I really don't know.”
Tenchi laughed as well. She looked up at him and smiled.
“I've been awfully stupid, haven't I?”
“Not any more stupid than me,” said Tenchi. “You shouldn't have to lose something to realise how much it meant to you...I shouldn't have had to lose you twice to realise how I feel about you. Do you remember the first day we met and I showed you around the shrine grounds? You talked about how beautiful it was and I said that most people didn't recognise the beauty in their lives even though they're right smack-dab in the middle of it. It's pretty silly that I ended up making exactly that mistake with you.”
“What's done is done,” Ayeka said. She touched his cheek again softly. “The future lies before us now, Lord Tenchi.”
“It sounds like you've been thinking about it already,” Tenchi said.
Ayeka blushed. “Forgive me, but yes...there are things we must still discuss. My departure from the throne can only be temporary. And when I return, I must seal my claim once and for all. As you've seen, Lord Tenchi, mine is the leading claim but it is not the only one. It is expected that I should take the steps necessary to secure it.”
“Which are?”
Ayeka looked down, not trusting herself to meet his gaze as she broached the subject.
“To marry, Lord Tenchi. To marry another leading member of the Royal Family. In fact, do you remember why I first arrived here?”
“I'm not likely to forget,” Tenchi grinned. “You came to rescue Mihoshi.”
“But that was not why my ship was nearby,” said Ayeka. “I was returning to Jurai following a meeting with a potential suitor. It was part of a long process of selection. Sooner or later, it would be expected of me to have chosen one.”
“I had no idea...” Tenchi thought about it. “It...actually sounds pretty horrible.”
“I suppose it was, in retrospect,” Ayeka nodded. “But it was my duty then...and it is still my duty now.”
Tenchi felt his heart flinch. “You mean...you're going to have to leave again to marry someone you only just met once?”
Ayeka balled up her robe in her hands, trying not to betray her anxiety as she forced herself to speak slowly so as not to trip over the words that tried to tumble from her lips. “I...well...it doesn't have to be like that. You see, you are a member of the last direct bloodline...in fact, you have a stronger claim to the throne than I, if you only chose to invoke it. If our claims were to be joined...there could be no questions.”
“Joined? You mean...do you mean if we were...were married?” Tenchi started. “Are you asking me to...”
“I state only the truth,” said Ayeka. “And trust the rest to your judgement. My feelings, my desires...are no longer a secret.”
“I...it's a lot to think about,” Tenchi managed.
“You have time,” Ayeka said. “Nothing must be decided tonight. It is enough for me that you did not recoil in horror at the thought.”
“It's a beautiful thought,” Tenchi gave her a small smile. “It's just...a big thought as well.”
“I truly think that you would be happy on Jurai, Tenchi,” Ayeka said quietly. “It would be different, but you would be able to visit Earth whenever you liked. And I would be by your side to help.” She took his hand. “I would be there always, if you would have me.”
“It's remarkable to think about it,” said Tenchi. “But...I also need time to think about it.”
“I understand.” Ayeka nodded. “You would have to discuss it with your family.”
“Yes...and with Ryoko.” Tenchi watched Ayeka for the first sign of any explosions. “I'm assuming when you met her that she explained why she was here?”
“Y...yes, she did.” Ayeka looked away again.
“And you understand why I can't just leave her?” Tenchi kept a hold of her hand.
“I do.” Ayeka nodded. “I would not have you dishonour yourself on my account. Nor would I have you betray your feelings. I know that Ryoko means a great deal to you.”
“She does.” Tenchi agreed. “She made it possible to save you. She ran Ryo-Okhi through the gauntlet of Jurai's planetary defences without hesitation.”
“You must have been worried about her when she vanished,” said Ayeka.
“I was.” Tenchi nodded. “I thought that Azaka knew something but he refused to tell me when I asked.”
“He did the same when I asked,” said Ayeka. “And Kamidake would not tell me either.”
“You asked them?” Tenchi looked surprised.
“Of course. I was worried, too.” Ayeka blushed. “Don't think that you're the only one who cares for Ryoko, Lord Tenchi.”
“I just always assumed...I mean, the two of you were always fighting...”
“Yes, we were.” Ayeka smiled shyly. “We made sure of that.”
“I...don't understand...”
“Someday you might,” Ayeka said enigmatically. “Suffice to say...I am not so arrogant as to believe that I am alone in your heart.”
“And you...are okay with that?”
“Perhaps you would understand better if you had been raised in Juraian society,” Ayeka looked up at him. “It is not so unusual as you seem to think. Particularly among our royalty.”
“I...I see.” Tenchi swallowed. “Um...well, I suppose that's a relief...”
“And besides,” Ayeka blushed as she made the confession. “It would not just be a case of me sharing you with Ryoko...it would also mean you sharing Ryoko with me...”
“Uh...what?” Tenchi blinked, trying to work out whether that could mean anything other than what it sounded like.
“Ryoko and I reached an...understanding. Some time ago.”
“I had no idea.” Tenchi shook his head.
“It does seem rather strange, doesn't it?” Ayeka smiled. “Such a thing is also not unknown to Juraians of royal birth. I hope you don't mind.”
“How could I mind?” Tenchi smiled back. “All this time, I never talked about my feelings for...well, for many reasons, but mainly because I thought I couldn't be with either one of you without hurting the other. I'd do anything rather than cause you or Ryoko pain...so I stayed silent.”
“I am not surprised.” Ayeka said. “You would always sacrifice yourself before you would harm another.”
Tenchi blushed. “I just care about you both, that's all.”
“I could never doubt you. I'm only sorry that you did not realise these things. There is much that you should know,” Ayeka drew closer to him. “You are part of a noble legacy that stretches for thousands of years.”
“It's still hard for me to get used to that idea,” Tenchi smiled wryly.
“And I am pledged to uphold and continue that legacy,” Ayeka went on. “And besides...I would not want you with me if it meant that you could not be as happy as you deserve to be.”
“Lady Ayeka,” Tenchi smiled, knowing that she meant it and hearing the honesty in her voice. “What greater happiness could I ask for?”
“You are the Crown Prince of planet Jurai,” Ayeka said. “There is nothing that would not be yours if you asked for it.”
“Now I know I have everything I could ever want.” Tenchi stroked back her dark purple hair.
Ayeka kissed him, softly at first but building up into a passion whose force came as a surprise to Tenchi. He yielded to the gentle but inexorable pressure she was exerting on him and lay back on the bed, staring up at her with questions in his eyes.
“A...Ayeka? What are you doing?”
“You have much to learn, Lord Tenchi,” Ayeka whispered. “And I shall be honoured to teach you.”
She kissed him again stroking his face with gentle hands. Tenchi closed his eyes and sighed happily as her tassels fell around his face. Her hair was perfumed with some strange scent that reminded him of flowers and fruit – natural things fresh, beautiful and sweet. He ran his hands through her silken locks, losing himself in the moment. Ayeka closed her eyes and sighed in return, feeling her heart surge in her chest. Whispering his name, she kissed him again.
“Dear Tenchi,” she murmured. “If only I could tell you how happy you have made me.”
“You're doing a pretty good job of showing me,” Tenchi managed with a small laugh.
Ayeka chuckled. “I do hope so.”
He felt her hands at the buttons on his collar, and his eyes went wide as her lips closed over his to quiet away any objections as she laid his shirt open. Drawing back, she looked down at his bare chest admiringly and rested a hand against his skin.
“Our hearts, Lord Tenchi,” she said, feeling the pulse in his chest. “They beat as one.”
“Lady Ayeka...” Tenchi clasped her hand to him.
She smiled. “I think, under the circumstances, you can probably just call me Ayeka.”
“But you still call me-”
“That's because it's what you are. And it's about time you got used to that. If you choose to stay with me, you'll be hearing it a lot more often on Jurai.” Ayeka drew closer, still smiling. Tenchi kissed her, wondering at the side of her that seemed to be emerging from behind the demure and restrained facade she always maintained. He remembered the sight of her when she had unleashed her powers on Jurai and thought to himself that she was just as beautiful now. Her dignity and power were on display, along with her affections. Her tone was gentle but firm and Tenchi decided not to even think of arguing. That resolve lasted even when Ayeka bowed her head and began running soft kisses along his collarbone and across his chest, but as she moved down his body he gave a start and moved to sit up.
“Lord Tenchi?” Ayeka looked up, her crimson eyes alight with concern. “Is something wrong?”
“No, no...it's just...” Tenchi swallowed nervously. “Isn't this all...rather sudden?”
“We've known each other for a long time now,” Ayeka pointed out.
“Yes, but I mean...shouldn't we wait? For when...I mean, if...after marriage?”
Ayeka smiled as realisation dawned. “I understand. We Juraians do things...differently. For us, marriage is a sacred covenant not easily cast aside.”
“Well, it's like that for us as well-” Tenchi began.
“And that,” Ayeka went on, “is why it is customary for partners or would-be partners to...test each other first. To do the things expected of partners together to ensure their suitability and to ensure that they will be able to honour their holy union rather than despoil it with quarrels.”
Tenchi stopped and thought about it. “That...actually makes more sense than the way we do it...”
Ayeka smiled. “And those tests and explorations must cover every aspect of married life. From the most mundane...as I believe we have already done in living together...to the most intimate...”
Her finger trailed down Tenchi's body as she spoke. He shivered at the light touch and looked up at her.
“I understand,” he said.
Ayeka hesitated and withdrew. “Although...I acknowledge that, given that you were raised unaware of your true heritage, this part of the legacy of which you are the heir may be somewhat, well, confronting...forgive me if I have gone too far. Please believe that I would never mean to disrespect you.”
“I could never think otherwise,” Tenchi sat up and put his arms around her reassuringly. “And...if we're going to make this work, I know I couldn't ask you to abandon your heritage. It's too much a part of you.”
“So you trust me?” Ayeka watched his face.
Tenchi nodded. “Of course I trust you, Ayeka.”
“Then you don't mind?”
“Not at all.” Tenchi assured her.
She bowed her head. “Thank you.”
Their lips met in a gentle kiss of mutual encouragement. Ayeka pressed him back into the bed and then sat up, not taking her eyes from his. She reached behind her and drew open the bow in the sash that held her blue robe around her. She cast it aside, the bright red ribbon of silk fluttering to the floor, and drew the robe from her shoulders, smiling down at Tenchi and feeling a blush coming to her cheeks at the thought of undressing in front of him. The plain robe she wore under her kimono slipped from her and she leaned over Tenchi in her white corset underwear. It hugged the outline of her body so closely that Tenchi's face reddened at the sight of her. Ayeka smiled and stroked his hair.
“Are you ready to explore this, Lord Tenchi? To test each other?”
Tenchi kissed her. “I'm yours, my lady.”
“I won't forget it,” Ayeka whispered. “Nor shall I forget that I am yours.”
She glanced down as she saw Tenchi's hands begin opening the buckle on his belt and looked back up at him questioningly. He smiled shyly.
“I...would rather do this myself...if this is going to happen.”
“As you wish.” Ayeka sat back and began undoing the silver clasps on her corset. She forced herself to keep her gaze off Tenchi, knowing that it would make him uncomfortable to be watched. Closing her eyes as she felt the last clasp click open in her fingers, she took a deep breath to calm her racing heart and offer up a quick prayer for luck.
“A...Ayeka?”
She opened her eyes. Tenchi was kneeling in front of her, his modesty still preserved by his black dress trousers clutched in his hand. His eyes were on her face and Ayeka met them with a smile.
“I'm ready, my Lord Tenchi. If you are.”
He nodded. “I am.”
“Then we shall proceed.” Ayeka gathered her courage and then peeled off the white corset. The air was chill against her bare skin for a moment before she acclimatised. Looking away briefly to stow the garment safely aside, Ayeka turned back to Tenchi and smiled brightly, raising one arm and hand to cover her breasts. His eyes were wide as they took in the spectacle.
“Oh, Ayeka...” he murmured. “You're beautiful.”
“As are you,” Ayeka leaned closer towards him. “As is this.”
They kissed again slowly and lay side by side, naked on the bed. Their tentative kisses deepened as they drew closer. Eyes closed, their explorations of each other were done largely by touch, hands stroking over skin, finding shapes and curves. Blushing, Ayeka dared slip a hand between Tenchi's legs to find him. He whimpered as her slender fingers found him and wrapped around him.
“Oh, Tenchi,” Ayeka whispered. She stroked his length, learning his shape, admiring the hardness and warmth of his arousal. Growing more daring at her example, Tenchi ran his fingertips down her chest, tracing the outline of a soft breast before cupping it, his thumb finding her nipple and pressing it into the mound, making her moan.
“Ayeka...” he gazed into her face. She opened her eyes and looked back at him. He was becoming bolder, but it was still clear to her that he was hesitant. But of course – she reminded herself – he could have had no formal training in the intimate arts as was guaranteed for the nobility of Jurai. She knew that such matters were not on the syllabus for Earth education, Yosho would never have broached the subject in order to maintain his disguise as a humble cleric, and she strongly suspected that Noboyuki would have been more hindrance than help had Tenchi ever been fool enough to turn to him for advice. She would have to take the lead, at least for now. The prospect did not displease her.
“Trust me, Lord Tenchi,” she whispered, pushing him over onto his back. “Allow me.”
“Are...are you sure?”
“Quite sure.” She kissed him and swung herself up and over him, straddling him. She leaned down to kiss him, her hair falling forward again to surround him with its intoxicating perfume. She stroked his face, framing it in her hands as she kissed it, and then began stroking her fingers down over his chest and stomach. “I want this to be special for you.”
Tenchi gazed up at her. “It already is.”
Ayeka blushed. “You flatter me.”
“I hardly do you justice.” Tenchi smiled. He sat up and kissed her, making Ayeka sigh at the feeling of his hardness pressed between their stomachs. She stayed on top of him as she guided him back down to the mattress, her breasts resting on his chest. She kissed his neck and shoulders and began working her way down his body, her hair brushing against his bare skin tantalisingly and making him sigh.
“Well, well,” said a voice. “I go out for five minutes and look what you get up to.”
“Ryoko?” Ayeka span around as a small gust of displaced air signalled the pirate's materialisation, sitting cross-legged atop the desk.
“What the-?” Tenchi sat up frantically behind Ayeka, covering her bare breasts with his hands before realising the inappropriateness of the gesture and turning bright red as he dived for the blankets. Ayeka covered herself and glared.
“You said you wouldn't be here!” she snapped. “You said you would leave!”
“Actually, princess, what I said was that I'd give you as much time as you needed,” Ryoko uncrossed her legs and stepped neatly off the desk. “And it looks to me like you've certainly used it. So here I am.”
“How long have you been around?” Ayeka demanded. “What did you hear?”
“Or see?” Tenchi added, his voice slightly muffled.
“Enough of both,” Ryoko shrugged casually and grinned. “You two really are quite adorable, you know that?”
“Don't mock us!” Ayeka moved forward while Tenchi tried to hide himself under the blanket.
“Oh, I'm not.” Ryoko sat on the end of the bed and leaned towards Ayeka, still grinning. “I must say, though, I'm impressed at your courage. And your honesty.”
“Wh...what do you mean, Ryoko?” Tenchi stammered.
“Oh, come on. Ayeka telling you about the 'understanding' she and I have? Wanting to consult me about the future? Having to learn to share each other?” Ryoko's grin broadened. “You haven't left me with many surprises to spring.”
“And you're...not angry with us?” Tenchi dared to hope.
“Not a bit of it.” Ryoko shook her head. “Why would I be? It's not like the two of you eloped without me.”
“And..what do you think?” Tenchi said. “About the future, I mean.”
“It sounded like fun to me,” Ryoko cocked her head.
“And you're okay with this?” said Tenchi, scarcely believing it.
“I promised a fair fight,” Ryoko shrugged again. “And I'm not so pig-headed that I can't see that the outcome has already been decided. I can live with an honourable draw.”
“You seem to have mellowed somewhat during your time away,” Ayeka remarked.
“I could say the same for you, Ayeka,” Ryoko said. “Besides, it's Tenchi's feelings we both care most about, right?”
“Well, yes, of course!”
Ryoko nodded. “So if this is what he wants...and it looks like it is...then so be it. It's not the clean-cut victory I was hoping for, but I can live with it and I'm pretty sure you can too.”
Ayeka smiled. “The consolation prize is not so bad.”
Ryoko grinned at her. “No, she's not.”
While Ayeka blushed furiously, Ryoko snapped her fingers as if realising something. “Oh, but where are my manners? Here. Let me catch up with you.”
She vanished, reappearing behind Tenchi and wrapping her arms around him. He felt the warm skin of her breasts against his back and froze, hardly daring to even breathe.
“R...Ryoko?”
Ayeka watched the dress the pirate had teleported out of crumple to the ground. “You're rather fond of that little trick, aren't you, Ryoko?”
“I don't see Tenchi complaining,” Ryoko smiled, drawing a circle on Tenchi's chest with a lazy finger. “And I don't recall any objections from you the first time you saw me do that, either, princess.”
“Now just what does that mean?” Tenchi stared. “What first time she saw you?”
“You mean to say she hasn't told you how we reached our...'understanding'? Even after she mentioned all that stuff about Juraian bonding customs?” Ryoko grinned at Ayeka. “So she did leave a surprise for me to reveal. Well...let's just say that Ayeka and I have already...tested our suitability.”
“How dare you say it like that!” Ayeka exclaimed. “I-”
“You'd prefer me to say that we took each other in the bath like a pair of hungry lionesses?” Ryoko said, enjoying the colour that it made Ayeka turn. “That I took you out to a rainy hillside and made you scream my name into the storm? Or-”
“That...that's not what I meant!”
“And now I guess we have this chance for us all to test our suitability,” Ryoko went on, ignoring her. “Isn't that right, Tenchi? Tenchi?”
Tenchi blinked as if regaining consciousness. “Uh...well...”
“Let's just take that as a 'yes', shall we?” Ryoko reached down his body and snatched away the blanket from his unresisting hands to expose him, grinning as she enjoyed the sight. “My, my, Ayeka...you've certainly got him...interested.”
“I just...” Tenchi began.
“It's all right. She has the same effect on me.” Ryoko licked Tenchi's ear seductively. “Metaphorically speaking, of course. Now, then, princess...please continue what you were doing. I'll pick it up as we go along, trust me.”
Tenchi bowed his head and looked up at Ayeka, who had approached him on her knees, some of her earlier commanding confidence gone. She rested her hands on his thighs, framing his arousal with slender fingers and glanced up hesitantly.
“With your permission, Lord Tenchi?”
“Permission?”
Ryoko chuckled. “I'm sure he won't object, Ayeka. Go ahead.”
Ayeka gave a small smile. “Yes, perhaps you're right, Ryoko.”
She lowered her head. Tenchi barely had time to realise what she intended before he felt her soft lips around the head of his manhood. It was nothing more than a kiss, but she revisited him several times as if learning his shape before finally taking his tip into her mouth. Tenchi gasped, but thought he heard Ryoko make a small noise of approval as she watched over his shoulder.
“Oh, Tenchi,” Ayeka whispered.
“Lady...Lady Ayeka...”
She gave a laugh as her fingers almost absent-mindedly wrapped around his shaft. “You really can just call me Ayeka, you know.”
“I know, I just...oh...” Tenchi moaned as she took more of him in her hot mouth, her gentle tongue lapping around him. Ryoko held him close, scattering small kisses across his neck and ear.
“Isn't she wonderful, Tenchi?” she whispered.
“You...you know?”
“Mm-hm.” Ryoko purred. “Like I said, Tenchi...we're a pair of hungry lionesses...and tonight, you're our prey.”
Tenchi moaned again, shifting in Ryoko's arms, which tightened around him to keep him in place. “You've certainly caught me...”
“Damn straight.” Ryoko's lips closed around his ear. “And we're going to eat you all up. Aren't we, Ayeka?”
Ayeka looked up and smiled coyly. “Oh, indubitably, dear Ryoko.”
“'Dear Ryoko'?” Tenchi stared. “Just how much haven't you two told me?”
Ayeka and Ryoko traded glances and grins.
“Maybe one day you'll find out,” Ryoko said.
Ayeka giggled and rested Tenchi back against his stomach so that she could kiss her way down his full length. “Oh, Ryoko. You shouldn't tease him like that, you know.”
“You're the only one I can see doing any teasing at the moment, princess,” Ryoko reached down Tenchi's smooth body and took him into her hands. Ayeka took him back quickly and shot Ryoko a disapproving look.
“It's part of the test. There's no good rushing it.”
“I concur,” said Tenchi helplessly.
Ryoko grinned. “Well, in that case...”
She slid out from behind Tenchi and crept catlike down the bed until she was level with Ayeka, who looked at her curiously.
“And just what do you propose doing?”
“Lending a hand, of course.” Ryoko slipped one between Tenchi's legs to prove the point. He jumped and whimpered.
“Hey, Ryoko! Watch what you're doing with those!”
“They have my undivided attention,” Ryoko grinned.
“Are you quite all right, my Lord Tenchi?” Ayeka looked up at him. Tenchi stared at her, seeing the tenderness and concern in her crimson eyes. They settled him, reassured him like a balm for the soul, and he swallowed hard before he nodded.
“I'm fine, Ayeka. Thank you.”
She smiled as she caressed him. “Very good, then.”
Ryoko nudged her and smiled. “Move over, princess.”
“As you wish, dear Ryoko.” Ayeka lifted her head to kiss her fondly, making Tenchi's breath catch as she handed him over with a smile. Ryoko gave Tenchi a wink before she turned to Ayeka, wrapping her arms around her and guiding her full-length onto the bed. Ayeka sighed as Ryoko's hand traced it's way down her neck, between her breasts and over her stomach, rolling her as far over onto her back as was possible with Ryoko propped behind her like a pillow. Ryoko whispered seductively into her ear as the hand went lower onto the inner thigh of Ayeka's leg, gently drawing it back to open her.
“There you are, Tenchi,” Ryoko smiled. “She's all yours.”
Tenchi blinked. “Wh...what?”
“Tenchi...” Ayeka whispered. Ryoko was holding her gently but inescapably. There was almost a pleading look in her eyes.
“Can't you tell how much she wants this?” Ryoko took a deep breath. “I can. I can smell it. Look, she's almost ready.”
Ryoko stroked her fingertips over Ayeka's mound, making her moan gently. Tenchi tried not to stare at her sex as Ryoko presented her to him.
“A...Ayeka?”
“Yes...” Ayeka closed her eyes in surrender.
“Come on, Tenchi,” Ryoko smiled encouragingly.
“What...what should I do?”
Ryoko's smile widened. “Kiss her, of course.”
Tenchi nodded and moved towards her. Ayeka's eyes half-opened and fixed on him. Her lips opened in expectation and Tenchi lowered his head to meet her, but Ryoko stopped him at the last minute.
“Not there.”
Tenchi looked up and saw Ryoko glance meaningfully down Ayeka's body. He understood belatedly, and obeyed. He worked his way down over the princess's flawless alabaster skin, his every touch making her cry out. Reaching the secret place between her legs, he paused for a moment to seek a confirmatory glance from her. Ayeka, almost panting with anticipation, nodded breathlessly.
“Go on, Tenchi,” Ryoko said gently. “Carefully now.”
He nodded, closed his eyes and kissed Ayeka. She cried his name and Tenchi feared for a moment that he had hurt her somehow, but it quickly became evident that the opposite was the case. He kissed her again, getting accustomed to the shape of her, the warm, soft flesh of her prize and the unusual but enjoyable taste she left in his mouth.
“T...Tenchi!” Ayeka writhed in Ryoko's arms.
“Hush, now, princess.” Ryoko admonished her gently. “Don't distract him now.”
She turned Ayeka's head towards her and closed her mouth with her own. She clasped Ayeka's breast in her hand to hold her more firmly. Ayeka gave a muffled exclamation and tried to struggle for a moment before resigning herself to the pleasure. She went limp in Ryoko's embrace, her legs relaxing to allow Tenchi in closer. He took the opportunity, stroking a hand along her thigh. Ryoko watched him with interest and glanced down at Ayeka. The princess's cheeks were flushed with passion and one of her hands had intertwined with Ryoko's, clutching at it desperately.
“Oh, Tenchi...Ryoko...” Ayeka gazed up into her golden eyes.
“That's right,” Ryoko smiled. “We're not going anywhere.”
Tenchi broke off and hesitantly reached out a hand, his fingers brushing over Ayeka's glistening sex, their very touch seeming to be electric. Ayeka tensed, and tensed again when he drew a finger down the length of her entrance and dared to probe into her.
“Well done,” Ryoko was watching him again. “She's ready for you now.”
“What do you mean?” Tenchi blinked.
Ryoko smiled knowingly and slid around behind Ayeka to cradle her head in her lap. She stroked the Juraian's purple hair to settle her before reaching down Ayeka's body to hold her between her legs. Tenchi appeared to be struck dumb at the sight, but Ryoko nodded encouragingly.
“What are you waiting for, Tenchi?” she purred. “Give the little princess what she wants.”
“I-”
“Please, Tenchi,” Ayeka's voice was just a whisper, but her eyes were steady as she looked up at him. Ayeka shifted position to expose herself to him fully, her chest rising and falling with her heated breaths. Tenchi moved closer to her on his knees. His tip brushed against her sex, making her breath catch. It slid up and down her once or twice before Tenchi found her opening. He met her eyes one last time for confirmation and gave her a gentle smile before he pressed inside her. Ayeka gasped at his passage, forcing herself to relax despite the overwhelming feeling. Inch by inch, Tenchi entered her until their bodies were together completely. Breathing hard, he looked down at her. Ayeka gazed up at him and raised a hand to stroke his cheek, her eyes fixed adoringly on his, shining with red fire.
“My Lord Tenchi,” she whispered.
“My Lady Ayeka,” Tenchi leaned down to kiss her. The motion caused him to move inside her and Ayeka gave a small cry of pleasure just before his lips closed over hers. She clutched at his back, hot tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. She had never felt so complete.
“Oh, Tenchi,” she closed her eyes. “You feel wonderful.”
“So do you, Ayeka,” Tenchi stroked her hair back from her forehead, revealing the slender headband of pale ivory wood she always wore. “Like nothing I've ever felt before.”
Ryoko chuckled at their innocence. “You two really are just too adorable, aren't you?”
Ayeka ignored her, concentrating on the feeling of fulfilment from having Tenchi inside her as she smiled up at him. She brushed her lips against his and began moving her hips slowly, growing accustomed to the feeling of his penetration. The speed of her kisses and her motions increased as she familiarised herself with his shape and began to explore the pleasures of their connection.
“Oh, Tenchi,” she sighed. “Tenchi...”
“Ayeka...” Tenchi moaned. He had his hands on her hips and Ryoko gave him a nod of approval, leaning over Ayeka to give him an encouraging kiss.
“Go on, Tenchi,” she whispered. “You can't break her. Not like this. I promise.”
“If you say so, Ryoko...” Tenchi bit his lip and began making small, gentle thrusts that produced an exultant reaction from Ayeka far out of proportion to the effort involved. Ryoko nodded her approval and slipped out from behind Ayeka, resting the princess's head gently down onto a pillow. Sitting up, she tossed back her cyan hair and enjoyed the sight of Ayeka's body responding so readily to Tenchi's. Almost unconsciously, her hand drifted between her legs and she began touching herself in time to the movements of her two lovers. She lay alongside Ayeka, as close as she could, close enough to smell the Juraian's perfumes. She moved to her rhythms, joining her in her ecstasy.
“Darling Tenchi...”
Ayeka put her arms around Tenchi's neck to hold him close, kissing his nose, cheeks and lips. He did his best to return the affections, trying to keep his movements gentle.
“Miss Ayeka...”
She smiled. “It's all right, Tenchi, I promise. Ryoko was right. You can't break me.”
“No, but...” Tenchi pressed his forehead against hers, gritting his teeth. Ayeka kissed him understandingly.
“Would you like me to take the lead, Lord Tenchi?” she offered.
“Excellent idea, Ayeka,” Ryoko smiled.
“Hm.” Ayeka gave a small laugh and looked up at Tenchi. “Very well, then. Tenchi? Lie back, please.”
Tenchi withdrew from her carefully and looked around for space on the bed. Ayeka sat up beside him, placing a fond kiss on his cheek as she rested on his shoulder.
“Oh, Ryoko, dear?” she said sweetly. “Do give our Lord Tenchi some assistance, won't you?”
“My pleasure, princess.” Ryoko grinned, flashing her teeth. Her arms snaked around Tenchi and her lips found his in a deep, passionate kiss that left him helpless to resist when she slid one leg out from under him and flipped him down onto the bed.
“Ryoko!” Tenchi stared, entirely unprepared for the sudden move. Ryoko kissed him hard once more and Tenchi closed his eyes as he felt Ayeka straddle him. Her hand took hold of his arousal, guiding him into her once again. Her breath caught as she eased herself down him, taking his full length for a moment before she rose again. Slowly, she built up into a rhythm that immersed them both in waves of pleasure. She threw her hair back and cried his name as she felt herself responding to him in exactly the way she had been taught. Ryoko sat up and swung herself over Tenchi's chest facing Ayeka.
“Come on, princess,” she urged. “Don't stop now.”
Tenchi gasped for breath behind her. She was blocking his view of Ayeka, but the view of Ryoko's hindquarters was not one to be objected to. The pirate leaned forward to kiss the princess's panting mouth, holding her close, pressing their breasts together as they moved as one. Ayeka bit back a cry of delight as a shiver ran through her body. Ryoko recognised the signs and gave her a last parting kiss.
“Keep going, Tenchi,” she murmured, moving off him to watch.
“As...as if I'd stop now.” Tenchi moaned. “Ayeka...”
“Lord Tenchi...my lord...my prince...” Ayeka fell forward, her tassels of hair brushing his chest. “Please...”
Tenchi held her hips and tried to keep up with her increasingly-frantic thrusts. “Yes, Ayeka, I...I feel it, too...”
Ayeka clutched at his shoulders, closing her eyes to immerse herself in the mounting waves of warmth, holding him close. “Oh, Tenchi, Tenchi...Tenchi!”
She cried out, arching her back in exultation as she came. The strength of the climax was enough to paralyse her, but Tenchi made up for it by redoubling his movement, pushing deeper inside her with every thrust until she was washed away in the pleasure of the moment. The extra effort triggered something deep inside him too and he gritted his teeth again with the effort of concentration, summoning up all the willpower and self-discipline he had been taught.
“Ayeka...Ayeka, I'm going to...”
“Yes, Lord Tenchi,” bringing herself back to the present, she opened her eyes just inches away from his, and nodded. “Please do. For me. It's all right, I promise.”
“Well, go on, Tenchi,” Ryoko smiled. “Don't leave her begging like that.”
Tenchi closed his eyes and let himself go at last. His release seemed to take an eternity to build up before it hit him like the flood of a breaking dam. Ayeka cried out as she felt it burst forth inside her and she held Tenchi close, making sure that she kept it all as she whispered his name over and over again in his ear.
“Tenchi...Tenchi...oh, Tenchi...thank you...thank you...”
“A...Ayeka...” Tenchi's voice was shaky as he struggled to regain his breath. Enjoying the sense of power she had over his incapacity, Ayeka gave a small giggle and kissed his forehead.
“I would say that proves our compatibility. Wouldn't you?”
Tenchi laughed despite himself. “I guess it does.”
Ayeka smiled and gave him a long, lingering kiss, basking in the warm afterglow of fulfilment. “I do love you, my Lord Tenchi.”
Tenchi felt his heart swell at the words. “And I love you, Princess Ayeka.”
She eased off him slowly and collapsed gratefully onto the bed by his side, resting her head on his chest and snuggling close, her hand in the centre of his breast. Tenchi put an arm around her, hand on her hip, holding her against him. Ryoko matched her pose on his other side.
“Well done, both of you,” she said. “First times aren't always the best.”
“You were a great help,” Ayeka smiled. “Thank you.”
“I'm sure you'd have done fine by yourself,” Ryoko grinned.
“Even so,” Tenchi held her too. “I'm glad you were here, Ryoko.”
The pirate's golden eyes glowed. “So am I, Tenchi.”
“After all,” Tenchi went on. “I never got to thank you, either.”
“For what?”
“Taking me to Jurai's Royal Palace,” Tenchi smiled. “You're the one who made it all possible.”
“So it was true, Ryoko?” Ayeka raised her head.
Ryoko shifted, uncomfortable at being the centre of attention like that. “Well...yeah, so what if it was? I couldn't just leave Tenchi to walk there, could I?”
“Azaka said that you fought with the valour of a thousand knights,” said Ayeka. “He must have been telling the truth.”
Ryoko flinched at the memory of the old knight's praise on the landing pad at the palace, almost feeling the pain in her side again. “Well...I did my best.”
“And it worked.” Tenchi smiled. “But then you vanished. We were all looking for you, but you just disappeared. I always wondered why.”
Ryoko closed her eyes. “I...had some thinking to do, I guess. And I needed a break. I'll tell you, Jurai's planetary defences aren't totally ineffective. I didn't want to slow you down.”
“You were wounded?” Ayeka's eyes widened.
Ryoko brushed it off awkwardly. “And I was afraid. I mean...Tenchi was so determined to rescue you, Ayeka. I thought that he'd...that even if he succeeded, that there wouldn't be any room for me afterwards.”
“So that's why you tried to talk me out of it?” said Tenchi.
“You what?” Ayeka sat up. “You tried to stop him coming to save me?”
“I didn't mean it like that! I just...” Ryoko sighed as she tried to explain. “I've never had anywhere...or anyone to call my own before. Life as a space pirate isn't exactly...stable. And Ryo-Okhi isn't much for conversation. It never really bothered me until I came to Earth and met Tenchi...and then you, Ayeka, and everyone else. For the first time, I had somewhere. I had people I trusted. It was...like how I always imagined having a family would be.”
“You never had a family, Ryoko?” Tenchi said.
She shook her head. “Nope. Not until I came here. And then, just when everything seemed to have settled down, along comes Kagato. We all get arrested and suddenly we're on the run across half the galaxy. He took you, Ayeka. Nearly killed Tenchi's grandfather. Nearly killed me.”
“You fought him at the old palace?” said Tenchi. “Ryoko...why didn't you say anything?”
“I didn't want to slow you down, like I said,” Ryoko smiled sadly. “It was so obvious you were going to go after Ayeka. And I knew you'd need my help. And I didn't want you worrying even more on my behalf. But at the last minute...all I could think about was what could happen if we lost. If we failed, and Kagato had killed you, Tenchi, what would I have left? I panicked. So I tried to stop you...tried to save the only thing I had while I still could. But you said that you couldn't forsake Ayeka, even though you wanted to come with me on that journey I offered you, and I knew then that I had to stand by you no matter the cost.”
“You...agreed to go with her on a journey?” Ayeka looked at Tenchi, her eyes wavering.
Tenchi nodded. “Yeah, but...I meant afterwards. After we'd got you back. After we'd been able to talk about everything together. After it was all sorted out at last. That was what I wanted.”
“I should have come back to you,” Ryoko whispered, looking away and suddenly seeming to shrink in shame. “I shouldn't have run away and tried to hide. I'm so sorry, Tenchi.”
“It's all right, Ryoko.” Tenchi hugged her. “It's all worked out in the end, hasn't it?”
“I suppose it has.” Ryoko dared to meet his eyes.
“I'm sorry to have put you through so much, dear Ryoko,” Ayeka took her hand.
“Just don't get kidnapped so easy next time, okay, princess?” Ryoko smiled wryly. Ayeka chuckled.
“I shall make a mental note. And I suppose...along with that apology, I owe you thanks.”
“Why would you say that?”
“Well, you got Tenchi and the two knights to the palace,” Ayeka smiled. “Whatever your doubts and fears, Ryoko, you did the right thing in the end. Things like that are why I realised that you weren't quite as monstrous as I first thought you were.”
Ryoko grinned. “Was that a compliment?”
“Just a statement,” Ayeka said. “It is not only Lord Tenchi who owes you thanks. I am indebted to you also.”
“The First Princess and the heir of Jurai in my debt,” Ryoko grinned mischievously. “Who'd have thought it for a humble space pirate?”
“'Humble' isn't a word I'd have used to describe you, Ryoko,” said Tenchi.
“I'll take that as a compliment, too.” Ryoko kissed him. “And you're welcome. Both of you. Because whatever I did...you welcomed me back after I ran away. You never had to, but you did.”
“You'll always have a place in our hearts, Ryoko,” Tenchi assured her. “Isn't that right, Ayeka?”
“Always,” Ayeka affirmed, squeezing her hand.
Ryoko turned her head away and closed her eyes as she felt them begin to fill with tears. “Oh, you...Tenchi...”
“Ryoko? Are you crying?” Tenchi sat up to try to see.
“Shut up.” Ryoko tried to sound defiant. “I mean, so what if I am?”
“Well, I just...” Tenchi hesitated. “I never expected to see it.”
“You never thought I had it in me.” Ryoko smiled.
“Oh, Ryoko.” Ayeka touched her. “You must really mean it.”
“I wouldn't lie about this.” Ryoko looked up, her golden eyes glistening. “Not about something this important and not to you two.”
“I believe you with all my heart,” Ayeka held her hand.
“As do I.” Tenchi put his hand on theirs. “I love you, Ryoko.”
Ryoko felt fresh tears behind her eyes. “I...I love you, too, Tenchi. And Ayeka. I should have told you both that more often. Can you ever forgive me?”
“There's nothing to forgive.” Tenchi squeezed her hand. “Right, Ayeka?”
Ayeka nodded. “Nothing at all. I would have been frightened, too. The thought of losing you, Tenchi...it's too awful to contemplate.”
“Well, you won't have to worry about that now.” Tenchi smiled. “I'm not going anywhere.”
“How fortunate for us both.” Ayeka kissed his cheek.
Ryoko kissed the other one. “Damn right. And you'd better do as the princess tells you, Tenchi. Trust me.”
Tenchi hesitated, aware that Ayeka was blushing slightly. “Er...”
Ryoko grinned. “You'll find out. But speaking of princesses, does this mean that I get to be one now?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, think about it. You're the king of Jurai. Ayeka's your queen. What does that make me?”
“That's a fair point, actually.” Tenchi frowned. “You're still a wanted pirate, after all. Will they accept you?”
“The Holy Council will accept whomever you tell them to accept,” said Ayeka firmly. “There can be no doubting your lineage and your rights. You could issue a full pardon.”
“That'd get Nagi off my back, too,” Ryoko grinned. “Good idea, Ayeka.”
Tenchi looked nervous. “I suppose...but...”
“You will get used to having such power in your hands.” Ayeka assured him. “I know that you were not raised for it as I was.”
“I'll feel better with the two of you to advise me,” Tenchi admitted.
“You sure you want my advice?” Ryoko laughed.
Ayeka chuckled. “Yes, perhaps we need to think about that arrangements.”
“Well, whatever we decide, we don't have to decide it now, right?” said Ryoko. “We've got time.”
“All the time in the world,” Ayeka agreed.
Tenchi sighed with relief. “Thank goodness for that...”
The two girls snuggled into him warmly. Ryoko smiled.
“Thank goodness indeed. I'm sure we'll find lots of ways to fill it...”
