Chapter 1
The blaring alarm cut through the air as its owner slept soundly under a mound of blankets. The sun filtered in through the nearby window casting light amongst the blankets. And, still the figure did not stir. Loud snores seemed to drown out the sound of the alarm.
“USAGI!” the teenager’s name filtered through the floorboards as a woman stood at the foot of the stairs in an effort to rouse the teenager within. “Usagi! You’re late! You’re not going to have time for breakfast!”
The voice might as well have been a whisper for all the good it did. The girl known as Usagi still did not stir from her cocoon of blankets. She would much rather remain sleeping and not face the day that awaited. However, as she found herself thrust on the floor and her cacoon yanked from her frame, she realized she had no choice. Apparently, her mother decided to take a more physical approach to pry her from the sheets this morning. Oh why couldn’t she have ignored her?
“Usagi! Get your ass up and off to school. I will not tell you again!” Now her mother’s shouts sounded like the shouts they had been intended to be.
“I’m up do you mind?” Usagi pulled herself to her feet, long blond hair falling down her back like a waterfall. “School starts way to early.” She complained, as she made her way to the bathroom to change and shower. As she entered the bathroom, the school bus could be seen zooming past her street. As the yellow bus faded from view, it was all the motivation the girl needed. As if a switch had been flipped, she hurried through her morning routine in an effort to catch up to it.
In a blur of white, blue and blond Usagi sprinted down the street to her assigned bus stop only to see the red lights fade and the bus pull from the stop. “No! Wait!” she cried, her legs pumping faster and harder as she attempted to get the bus to stop for her. But, it was already around the corner by the time she skidded to a stop at the stop light. ::Dam it:: she thought. She glanced at her watch and realized she had one more shot. As the lights turned, she darted around the corner, skidding to another bus stop just in time for the city bus to arrive. Depositing the correct change, she slumped into her seat with an exhausted sigh.
By the time Usagi had reached the school grounds, she had already missed her first two classes. Not even bothering to sneak into her third, she made her way to the princepal’s office no doubt to recive a late slip and another detention for not making it to school on time. She wished she could say this were a one-time event, but for Tsukino Usagi she was late to school almost every day. Some days she’d make it by the skin of her teeth, while others, like today, she’d missed her first two classes, breakfast and of course she had no lunch money. So, this would be two meals in a row she missed. Not that she cared much anymore. With how strict meals at home were, missing a meal or two once in a while wouldn’t kill her. Or, that’s what she’d led herself to believe. As the lunch bell rang, Usagi wandered out to her favorite tree where she set most lunch periods. When she didn’t have lunch money, she couldn’t bare the site of watching other children eat, and enved those who got free or reduced lunch. When she’d asked her mother about it, the answer had been they made to much money and didn’t qualify. If that were the case, why was her mother so strict with portions? It was if she rashined their food.
“Not eating again?” a redish-brown haird girl inquired joining her friend by the tree. This was usually another normal occourance during the lunch break.
“I don’t have any lunch money again. Mom says packed lunches are bad for you.” Usagi answered her friend. “It’s okay, I’ll eat at dinner.”
Usagi’s friend made a face and pulled out a sandwich from her bagged lunch. “Here.” The girl thrust the offering at her friend. “Please take it.”
“Fine.” Usagi half-heartedly replied taking the offered food. ::I can always get rid of it later if I need to.:: she added as an after thought. When she did receive money, it wasn’t very often and she usually spent it on ice cream and other treats that were forbidden at home. Forbidden to her at least. According to her mother, ice cream and other sweet treats were dangerous for growing children. Despite this, her parents kept a stash hiden from her view. Usagi reluctantly ate the offering her friend provided, just as the bell sounded. “I don’t see why you make such a big deal about this, they barely give us a lunch break.”
The students had 30 minutes to buy their lunch, find a seat and eat their food. In Usagi’s opinion, that wasn’t enough time. Another reason she often used to justify skipping meals at school occasionally. Often, she ate off generous students like her friend Naru or her other friend Makoto who was always more than willing to share. So, at least during the school week she managed to eat twice.
As the school day neared it’s end, Usagi didn’t even bother boarding the school bus. She was in no hurry to go home, and often spent her time walking. Sometimes she would window shop, or spend the afternoon with Naru or another friend. Not today. Today she found herself wondering around town. Naru had after school activities as did her other friends. It had been suggested that she join a club or go out for a sport, but each time she declined. While it would provide her an excuse to stay away from home, it wasn’t always enough. She was clumsy and akward and could barely make it to school on time. Furthermore, sports and after school activities required a parent’s permission and support, neither one Usagi’s parents would willingly provide. Not with her grades barely passing.
If she had all the free time due to lack of interest in after school activities, then naturally it would stand to reason her grades should be passing at the very least. However, Usagi couldn’t bring herself to study. Not that her parents approved of anything less than perfection. Something Usagi never managed to achieve. At this point she’d all but given up and continued her routine of aimless wondering. :If only I could be someone else. Just for one day.:: Usagi thought to herself her eyes dully fixed to a new video game. It was an old arcade-style game, rare in this day of mobile games and hand-held gaming devices. On the side it had a picture of a blond woman (not to far in looks from herself), dressed in a sailor style uniform. Again, not far from the uniform that Usigi had chosen to wear that day to school. Only the skirt looked a lot shorter, and the shirt didn’t even cover the girl’s stomach. A red mask covered her eyes, complimenting the red bow in her blond locks. A chocker with an upturned crescent, white elbow-length gloves and blue heals with ankle straps completed the look. Under the image in old-style block writing were the words “Sailor V”. Usagi dug into her pocket for any money, not surprised to find nothing but lint. ::Maybe I can play this weekend.:: she thought to herself, tearing herself a way from the display. She had to have something to look forward to and mindless button-mashing seemed to be a good stress relief from an otherwise crappy day. To bad video games cost money.
Usagi stepped through the front door of her house just as the street lights popped on. Her mother had been waiting for her daughter’s return and she wasn’t very happy about it. “Where have you been young lady!” her mother, Ikou scolded. “The school called and informed you missed two of your classes again. You really need to get up when I tell you.”
Usagi’s mouth opened then closed again, not sure what to say that would calm her mother down. She only stiffened wondering what sort of punishment she’d managed to receive this time? What was it….? No dinner, being thrown out of the house to study.. maybe both? “I’m sorry mamma… you should’ve—”
Usagi’s words were cut off as she found herself slapped across the mouth for daring to blame her mother for her own tardiness. “You know better then to speak to me like that. You can sleep at the school for all I care!” her mother fumed hands on hips glaring down at her daughter. “Hand me your house key.”
“Excuse me?” Usagi’s jaw just about hit the floor. Her mother had thrown her out on mutable occasions, but never took her house key from her. Gotham wasn’t always known for being the safest after dark, which was why, despite her own misgivings about her home life, Usagi strived to make it home well before dark.
“You heard me, hand me your house key.” Her mother repeated. “Or, I’ll take it from you by force.”
“Mom, no…” Tears begun to sting Usagi’s eyes. “Please don’t.”
“Then you should’ve thought about that when you ignored your alarm and my nermous attempts to get you up in time for school. You’re fourteen, Usagi. You need to be held accountable for your actions. If you can’t get to school on time by now, then a drastic change is needed. So, hand over your keys, now!”
“I’m sorry I’ll do better I promise.” Usagi sobbed tears leaking from tightly closed eyes. “Just one more chance, please. I can make it to school on time. I really can.”
“I’m going to count to three and if your house key isn’t in my hand by then, I’ll take it by force. One…”
Sweat started to form on Usagi’s skin as panic begun to set in. She’d seen her mother mad before, but never like this. “No… mamma don’t.”
“two…”
Usagi lowered her gaze to the floor, not daring to budge. She wouldn’t attack her, would she?
“Three…” When Usagi still refused to move, Ikou tore the bag off of Usagi’s back and rummaged through it to find her daughter’s house key. Once the item in question had been recovered, the bag was thrust back to its owner, sending bag and owner to the floor. “Clean up that mess and get out.”
Usagi could only lie on the ground in to much shock to move. Only when her little brother returned and kicked her, literally, while she was down, did she make an effort to move. She considered just walking up to her room to hide for the rest of the night, but decided against it. If her mother was willing to get this physical, she’d better not chance it. She also didn’t want to spend the night on the street either. So, she decided to make her way to her friend, Naru’s house. Hopefully her friend and mother wouldn’t mind the unexpected guest. As often as Usagi and Naru had impromptu sleep overs, Usagi would actually be surprised if she was turned away. Of course, Naru and her mother suspected something going on at Usagi’s place, but couldn’t prove it.
“Usagi?” Naru opened the door, pulling her friend in to a loving and welcome embrace. “What happened?”
Tears ran down Usagi’s face, as she gazed into her friend’s concerned eyes. “Mom took my house key and threw me out.” She managed between silent sobs. “Can I stay here for a while?”
Naru’s jaw clinched in anger, ushering her sobbing friend into the house and into a warm and comforting embrace. “You’re always welcome here.”
“Thanks.” Usagi gave a watery smile. She looked up at her friend, greatful for the contact. Her eyes locked on Naru as her lips inched closer until they met in longing tender affection.
