Disclaimer: Sailor Moon and Liv Kristine's song which named this story don't belong to me. |
Hi, dear fellow readers!
This is a fic I've written many years ago in my native language, then I decided to translate to English since Halloween is coming, and this story has everything to do with the theme. It was originally a oneshot, but more than 5k of words might be too much and discourage people to read it, so I decided to divide it in two parts, think it works better this way. Please, forgive me for any grammar problems, by the way. I'm not so fluent in English as I would like, but I try my best. :')
This is a Nephrite x Naru fanfic, as I know many people find this shipp problematic I want to clarify that in REAL LIFE I don't support a teenager engaging into a romantic relationship with an adult, okay?
Here Naru is already 17, but she is still a minor. It's just fiction, right? If you dislike it, please don't read it, the platform has a lot of amazing stories waiting for you to enjoy then. But if you like the shipp, then welcome, I hope you'll like it! <3
The title is inspired on Liv Kristine's song, Love Decay. The lyrics will appear during the story. As I don't own Sailor Moon and it's characters, I also don't own Liv's music, and I'm not earning any money from this, all I expect to get are some kind words from kind readers, would you give this present to me? :3
It's a Halloween story, so be prepared for a gothic romance, supernatural events, and a bit of spicy moments in the middle of it all.
Have a nice reading everyone!

October 31st, Halloween.
Naru, from her room's window, bewildered the adornments spread all around her neighborhood. That date wasn't even a holiday in her country, but it seemed that Americans managed to internalize some of their customs into the culture of her country at last.
It was early in the morning, time to go to school and the families already had garnished their houses. It should have happened at night, of course it has!
There were artificial spiderwebs hanging on the roofs, pumpkin lanterns on the floor, plastic bats and spiders tied on doors and windows or spread along the front yards.
The highschool girl of orange hair dressed her uniform, got ready to leave her room, and when she was already crossing the door a noise caught her attention. The lock went down and the window opened, inviting the wind to enter wildly, waving the long curtains to the sides. Naru got scared at first, but ended laughing of herself for such foolish fear. She walked towards the window, closed it and finally left the chamber. In the glass clouded by the cold though, a tenuous, foggy shadow appeared. The girl didn't notice the presence, yet it left a mark of a hand in there.
"Naru, you need a costume!" Her mother mentioned while the girl was eating breakfast in the dining room.
"Mom, I'm too old for this sort of thing!" She giggled, shrugging.
"Ikuko told me that Usagi will dress a bunny costume."
"So typical!" Naru almost choked with the food. "My, my! Usagi will never grow up. But why her mother bought a costume to her? Will she go to a party?"
"Oh no, I think she'll only trick-or-treat..."
Naru couldn't help but burst into laughing, the corner of her eyes even grew wetter. Imagining Usagi, an almost eighteen years old woman knocking doors to ask for candy was too much for her to take. When Naru managed to stop the bouts of laughter, she finished eating, said goodbye to her mother and left the house.
In those early hours, specially on that day, there was a thin layer of white mist covering the streets and sidewalks. It was really cold outside, and Naru has forgotten her coat. Too lazy to go back and fetch it, she decided to face the weather and walked the path to school. During the course, sounds of laughing came from the other side of the pavement. Curiosity made the girl turn around to know who would be close, so she found a man and a woman walking with arms entwined.
She sighed. Seeing happy couples made her feel a discomfort within, a sort of a feeling of emptiness and a bitter taste into her throat. Naru struggled to not let the obscurity and the melancholy which haunted her from time to time show, in such occasions she was already used to hide behind fake smiles. Still, the naked truth was but one; even almost finishing the last year of high high school, a memory of years ago remained fresh inside her mind, and it pulsed vividly. Naru has tried to let it go, she pretended to move on when accepting Umino's feelings. Their relationship wrecked in just three weeks though, the poor young lass couldn't return his boyish love, so she accepted the fact that she wouldn't find a way to feel whole with another person that wasn't:
"Nephrite..." The name escaped through her lips in a brief reverie.
Something blew against her ear, it felt like a sigh, provoking in her an intense chill. Frightened, Naru froze in place, landing a hand over her chest, the agitated heart was jumping behind her ribs. She heard the sound of something exploding and moved aside instinctively. The lamp of a pole nearby exploded, shards of glass fell spreading upon the cement and the asphalt.
Why a lamp would be on in the morning?
...Was it on?
It was better not to overthink about the subject, what mattered the most was to rush the pace and leave that place for once. Naru's instincts surely were trying to alert her of something, as if there was a presence, someone following her.
Spectral hands attempted to reach the girl, yet when coming close, they turned into smoke and faded away. She couldn't see them, but could feel the fingertips through the unbearable cold. Her feet led her in a desperate, unstoppable run at last.
He followed the girl in a lost, languid wandering, asking himself if she still remembered, if she still loved him.
Love decay, love cast away
Words crumble into dust
"Naru-chan, what happened?" Usagi jumped when seeing her pale complexion while bursting into the classroom, then throwing her body over the chair and splay her sweaty fingers on the wooden table.
"There was someone following me in the way to school, I'm certain of it!" Troubled, Naru couldn't focus her widened gaze anywhere, as if she was locked inside that instant of tension.
"It could be a ghost." Umino came to the girls, speaking mysteriously. "Don't you know the legend about Halloween?" He arranged the thick glasses and a dreadful grin expanded on his lips, the two rounded lens got foggy as his complexion grew dark. So usual of his, the art of dramatize. "They say that, on Halloween, the souls of those who died walk freely among the living!" Umino went on telling his little scare tale, ending with a faked evil laughter.
Usagi shrunk on the chair and almost cried her fears out, Naru folded her arms and stared the boy with a bored face.
"Oh please, Umino!" The ginger girl rolled her eyes, putting her notebook and pencil case on the table. Although their romantic relationshi hasn't worked, both remained friends and he usually pranked and joked that way. Naru obviously didn't take his words seriously, at least not at that moment.
However, as the morning turned into afternoon, the feeling of someone watching her returned. She could have sworn that a large smile has shone in a window of the classroom. The teacher needed to call her more then three times to make himself listened.
Look at me... The strange presence turned into a whisper that blended with the ringing sound of the bell announcing the end of the classes for that day. Going down the stairs, Naru ceased her pace between two steps, her ankle almost twisted, if there wasn't the handrail to get support, it would have been a dangerous fall. Her flaming hair fell over her shoulders, disarrayed. One lock went up mysteriously, Naru felt it being pulled and thought she would collapse in dread. I can smell you... An icy blow of air caressed her neck.
Skin to skin
You're innocent
But who am I to trust?
I feel a blow to turn around...
She screamed. By her side, there was Usagi holding her arm and asking what was wrong.
"Haven't you heard it?!" Terrified, Naru inquired.
"Heard what?" The girl of golden hair widened her eyes, quite confused.
"Nothing..." Naru breathed in deeply, relaxing her tensed shoulders, passing one hand over her neck, the skin still shivered and cold. "Nothing at all!" She repeated, wanting so hard to believe in her own words, giggling nervously. "I must've gotten impressed by Umino's silly tale, that's all!" Naru couldn't restrain the laughing, yet her laughter was anything but funny and was scaring Usagi to the bones.
"Naru, do you want me to accompany you home?" Blue eyes narrowed as her lips curled down.
"There's no need." She waved her hands clumsily. "I'm fine, can take care of myself!"
Usagi insisted to go, but Naru was resolute. She considered herself too old to fear ghost stories. In the end, despite still feeling frightened, she walked alone. The begining of her journey has been tranquil, there were a lot of people around, their voices and giggles distracted her. In the middle of the crowd she couldn't hear his steps, and the heavy breath blended to the others nearby, albeit a dead's breathing sounded far different from the living ones'. It was noisy, cracked, mournful.
Her fleeting relief vanished when Naru got closer to the park. There's been a while since the last time she stepped a foot in there, she pretended not remembering why. Like a sleepwalker, she stopped in front of a tree. Looking at it's long trunk, that fear revolving inside strangely dissipated, giving turn to an old sorrow to emerge.
Coppery eyelashes sealed and on their curving tips little drops formed. Two sighs were released, hers and his, intertwined. The same wandering hands from earlier touched her shoulders, this time they didn't faded in the way.
As afternoon was almost turning into night, he was changing from plasm to matter.
"My sweet Naru..."
Her eyes opened wide. In a lapse, Naru interpreted Umino's horror story and reached a conclusion:
"If souls can walk among the living today, so... Nephrite!" Vapor went out her mouth while speaking, the weather felt even colder. Naru spun around and saw leaves falling from the tree where one day she has sat under, in his company. But he, where would he be?
She looked at the brown earth underneath her feet, and between fallen leaves Naru saw footsteps. They were guiding her, she concluded and anxiously followed them. She bumped with kids dressed as monsters in the way and barely noticed it, her legs stumbled once and a while but never stop marching to the unknown.
The marks of boots sole took her to a forgotten church not so near, not so far, somewhere, nowhere...
Rays of the descending sun were making the hues of the stained-glass windows reflect on the high grass, on her, and on him, standing still at the door.
In shock, she stopped, her joints as hard as stones. His sapphire eyes, once shiny as the stars, now opaque were stuck on her figure. Slowly, the highschool girl came near. The closest she got, better she could study his features; pale like alabaster, dark circles under his eyelids, lips were dry and hair looked brittle. Lifeless. Naru, on her turn, emanated vitality in her colors and nuances, also in the warmth he could feel when having his mortified face caressed by her soft palms and gentle fingers.
"I must be going crazy..." She confessed. Her lips curved in a smile, her eyes overflowed with missing. Her tremulous hands went down from his frigid cheeks to his neck, they stroked brownish locks, before curly, now almost straight and dim. She touched his large shoulders. The humid lavender shirt was sticking to his body, it still had greenish stains and tears. Realizing his condition, Naru's lips shivered and an intense cry cascaded from her eyes while her face sunk onto the chest of the materialized phantom right ahead.
Inside his chest, silence. And still she could feel him somehow. Cold, but soft. If his heart wasn't beating, how was he breathing? Into their cores laid the same wish:
Make love revive just one more time
Can we be creatures of the night?
"I longed for this moment as if I were still alive..." Hoarsely, he confessed, then courage emerged so Nephrite overcame his own death and took Naru into a funereal embrace. She trembled, each touch of his felt like a sharpen wind. It didn't matter though, for she would never turn him down.
"How can't you be alive if we're holding each other right now?" Naru squeezed him into her arms, drowning in the crystal ice of death, finding comfort into it's darkness. "How can I feel you like this?"
"Only today," Nephrite rested his chin over her head, dipping his frosty fingers under ginger locks, bringing flaming strands of hair to his nose, so he could lose himself into the soft fragrance, so sweet as her whole being always have been. "Today I can have a bit of your air, your pulsation, your life..."
"I would give everything I have so we could share all of this and more everyday!" Naru sealed warm palms with cold ones, the living fingers entwined with the dead. She stared at him deeply, in anticipation. "Why death must take us apart, Nephrite?"
"One day it will bind us." And there was the first smile he has shown after crossing to the afterlife. Shadowy, yet sincere. And soon they shared their first, icy kiss. Lips slowly touched. Nephrite sucked a bit of warmness of life, Naru tasted a bit of the squalor of death.
I am bound to live forever
I'm alive enough to sense you
Why am I hiding?
Are we only dying?

So, that's chapter one. The next one will have adult content, right? So, get the children out of the room and enjoy ;)
PS: I don't know if in Japan people "celebrate" (not sure if that's the correct word) Halloween, I think it's unlikely in truth. Not like in USA at least. Here in my country there are some parties but you hardly see decorated houses or children asking for candies (unfortunately T_T), still I wanted to use the elements of the date on my story, so please I hope you'll receive my poetic license with open arms and have fun reading these lines.
See ya in the next chapter then, I'll publish it right away.
Kissuuuuus!!!!!
