The sun had already set by
the time Ritsuka had a chance to look out the window. He could feel
Yuiko's curious eyes on his back but said nothing to her. They had
finished eating dinner, and even had a cake that Yuiko's mother had
helped her bake. Yayoi was there as well, chatting happily to Yuiko
even though she was distracted. They were at Yuiko's house, with
actual permission from her parents this time.
It was his fourteenth
birthday.
It had been fun. Really,
truly, been fun. Spending the day with his closest friends, getting
presents he didn't feel he deserved... He hadn't had an enjoyable
birthday since Seimei died. Before that.... he couldn't remember. His
thirteenth had gone buy unnoticed, because he hadn't told anyone the
date; much to Yuiko's horror. He had been so stressed at the time
that he hadn't wanted any attention drawn to him, so he'd managed to
avoid telling her the date as long as possible. Probably, this was
his favorite one so far. He couldn't imagine anything that could've
made it better.
Well, that was partially a
lie. Seimei could've been there; but that was impossible. And
Soubi...
“So
you'll be at Yuiko-chan's house tomorrow? Do you want to be alone
with them?”
"Well...Do you
want to come tomorrow?" Ritsuka tried not to sound too hopeful.
"If you want me
to, of course." Soubi had answered.
"That's not what I
asked... Do you want to come?"
"I want what you
want."
"Soubi! Fine...
don't come tomorrow unless YOU want to come, and not because I want
you to!"
"....Is that an
order?"
"SHUT UP! Yes! Go
away!"
"Goodnight,
Ritsuka..."
Always, always it was like
that.... He hadn't seen Soubi yet today, either. On his birthday!
Ritsuka had meant what he said though. He didn't want Soubi to come
unless Soubi actually wanted to himself. What was wrong with that
guy? He said he loved him, didn't he? Who wouldn't want to see their
loved one on their birthday...? But Soubi's love for him was an
order. Or it had started out that way, rather; Soubi had told him
once. And this was his newest order... Why did it all have to be
about orders? Maybe this day was meant to prove something then....
That Soubi really didn't....
Ritsuka rubbed at his
temples irritably. His head hurt. His chest hurt too. He shouldn't
care. Yuiko and Yayoi were here with him, being his friends, and
appreciating his existence. Nothing else should matter.
But it did....
"Ritsuka-kun! Are you
okay? Do you have a headache?" Yuiko's worried voice cut into
his thoughts, her hand already resting over his.
"Yeah... Just a
headache, but I'm okay." He managed to smile almost free of
strain. He was good at smiling.
"Maybe we shouldn't
have played music..." Yayoi added hesitantly, also looking
worried. Ritsuka felt his smile turn a bit more sincere.
"No, it was fun.
Everything was fun, thank you both. I guess it was so much fun that
my head couldn't handle it!" And that was very possible.
"You don't have to
thank us, Ritsuka-kun! It's your birthday!" Yuiko chirped, and
Ritsuka felt his smile disappear.
"My favorite
birthday... so really, thank you." He was serious. Yuiko hugged
him then. She made Yayoi, who made an amusing face, hug him also.
Both were comforting.
'I love my friends...'
Ritsuka was sure of that now, he never had to wonder anymore.
'But.... isn't Soubi also my friend? Why isn't he here?'
The sunset was amazing.
But it was somehow empty without....
'I wish I could show
him this....'

Presents tucked away in
the desk and lights left off, Ritsuka locked his bedroom door and
slid to the floor against it. He was exhausted, emotionally and
physically. The day had been wonderful and awful. Ritsuka would have
preferred having an entirely horrible day to such a combination of
two completely opposite feelings. Now he wanted to do nothing but
sleep, but...
It was raining outside;
and the precipitation had caused his balcony doors to fog up. Staring
out between the gap in the curtains, at the empty street and yard,
Ritsuka felt his stomach twist with longing. Sparing a glance at the
photographs arranged on his wall, Ritsuka tiredly crawled across the
distance of the room until he was close enough to touch the glass.
Then, he curled up around his knees and leaned against the doors;
chilled glass stinging his cheek and causing him to shiver.
He wanted Soubi. A part of
him sincerely believed Soubi would show up. He wanted to believe that
part, but the flashing numbers on his alarm clock and the gloomy
night sky beyond the glass were making his trusting half shrink with
each passing moment.
“Soubi...” Two
years. Two years had passed and still Soubi made him such a mess.
Ritsuka had long since stopped denying that Soubi was a part of his
life that he couldn't live without. Love was still something too
complex for him to grasp the dynamics of. But they had grown closer,
they were some sort of couple aside from their Fighter and
Sacrifice bonds, more so than when they first met; Ritsuka knew that
much. Ritsuka believed that much.
“Soubi...”
Soubi loved him. Even if Ritsuka didn't agree with all of the ways
Soubi loved him, he had stopped doubting it's sincerity. Obviously,
something was wrong with him. Otherwise he wouldn't feel a growing
pain in his chest that was whispering doubts and making his trust
seem fragile as the glass he was leaning against.
“Soubi, it's my
birthday...”
Was he being selfish?
Birthdays weren't something he found particularly special. But at the
moment, pins and needles against his cheek, alone, the day seemed
painfully profound. Fortunately, or unfortunately, no one was around
to hear his pathetic whispers and pleads for Soubi's company.
Shivering once more from
the icy chill against his skin, Ritsuka's last thought before he
drifted into a fitful slumber was,
'All I want for my
birthday, is for Soubi to come... and prove something is real...'
