Chapter 1: A Reflection of the Mind

(Yoko's Thoughts)
He's been so pensive lately. Always in deep thought, I fear it will make him ill. Ever since the day I suggested that I spend some time with Shoryu- I mean the King of En and Rokuta, Keiki has been in distress. I do not know what to do with him. Maybe it is because I asked if he would stay in Kei. He hesitated before agreeing. He only agreed because he has to, not because he wanted to. I have given it some thought. I will place... Who is trust worthy enough to watch over the kingdom? Perhaps Enho? He is trust worthy, even Keiki trusts him. He couldn't disagree.
Yoko went to propose her plan to the disagreeable Kirin.
She walked around the castle, wondering where he might be. After an hour of walking the corridors of the palace, Yoko decided to move her search outside. It was a well-known fact, Kirin love the outdoors, where they can take in sunlight and fresh air. They love clean surroundings and being inside is not the place to acquire the sun. Yoko noticed little things about Keiki; dust seemed to bother him a little. The people seemed to bother him more, but he never complained. Most Kirin seem shy, except Rokuta. Shoryu seemed to have rubbed off onto the little Kirin in ways which Keiki needed vast improvement, like communication for example.
~He's so complicated~
Yoko walked through the doors and to the yard behind the palace. The Kirin sat upon a stone bench near a broken fountain. Because of a large chip missing, the bench Keiki sat upon needed restoration. The fountain in its glory years had probably been magnificent. It consisted of three large tears with ivy growing over the sides. The first outermost pond rose to a second medium pool and the top bowl held three stone birds. The bird tails dangled over the edge, long like peacock feathers. In between the birds were stone lilies which spray water toward the sky, but only a trickle roll over each petal now. It was barely enough water to fill the highest bowl. The amount of water would never fill either of the lower bases.
Keiki is considered to be a perfect creature, yet he chose a place of imperfection. It was not like him to sit and ponder the day away; then again, Yoko knew something was not right with the Kirin.
Yoko approached Keiki, trying to walk with feminine steps, but he heard her move and turned his tanzanite gaze upon her. He rarely smiled for her, yet he softly smiled today.
"What brings you out here, Keiki?" Yoko asked.
He sighed, "I was thinking about this fountain."
"What about it?" Yoko replied.
"Would you mind if I had it fixed?"
Yoko shook her head. "We can't possibly afford it yet." She reached out and touched one of the moss-covered birds. "I would love to see this place sparkle like it once did, but we can't. Not until the people have their needs met."
He looked a little let down, now it was time to spring her good news. "I've decided to take you to En with me."
Keiki looked at her with shock. "Who will..." He found his verbal assault cut off by her index finger pressed to his lips. "I will put Enho in charge until we get back. If anything happens, he will be able to send word." Yoko sat down on the tiny broken bench next to Keiki and placed a hand over his. "I worry about you." The warm contact forced a shudder down his spine. Yoko noticed and removed her hand from his. "I need to go back inside and prepare. I'll talk to you later Keiki."
He watched as she moved toward the palace only to stop and take a glance over her shoulder. A tiny smile graced her lips, she noticed her naive Kirin still watching her with his soft violet gaze.
Keiki wondered why it was she looked at him with such longing; it almost reminded him of the previous Queen of Kei, Yo-Ou. After seeing that look in her eyes, he was now petrified that Yoko might be the same.
*Keiki's Thoughts*
*No, Yoko is different. Yo-Ou was never so caring or devoted. All she cared about was herself. I have chosen wisely this time... I have to be right.* He stood and walked back to the palace. He had enough fresh air for one day.
Keiki rounded a corner only to bump into a servant girl carrying a tray with a bottle of ink. She dropped it and the bottle shattered into shards. He stood slightly stunned but quickly offered an apology. "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention..." He knelt and offered to help because he was at fault.
"Please, Kei-taiho, you should not be doing this." After removing the shards of glass, Keiki took her cleaning rag off the floor and placed it over the large blot of ink. He did not receive so much as a cut, but specks of ink dyed his hands. It would take a week to wear off. *At least it will remind me to pay closer attention to my surroundings. * He stood and moved down the hall, his hands now buried in his pockets.
In the distance, he could hear two voices, Shokei and Yoko. They were talking and laughing. It was something he heard often and before now never paid interest to the girlish fits of glee. This time, his curiosity beckoned him to listen. It might lead him some insight to his Queen's mind.
Shokei sat in a chair while Yoko ran a brush through her hair. Shokei chuckled. "Is it true that babies are born from women in Horai?"
Yoko laughed. "Yes, its very true."
"How is that possible?" Shokei asked. "I've never once seen it done."
Yoko laughed again. "You can't see it when it happens. It takes two people to make a baby in the other world."
"It takes two people here too." Shokei said.
Yoko blushed. "It's hard to explain. I will try, so be patient. It's sort of embarrassing."
"How can making a baby be embarrassing?"
"It's done through the process of copulation. I guess here, making love is nothing more than an act of pleasure."
"Making love?" Shokei found her checks flush. "That is pretty embarrassing."
Keiki found the conversation a little to racy for his taste and decided to move along, but stopped in his tracks when the next sentence rang from Shokei's lips. "You're going to see the King of En...Shoryu. Have you thought of him that way?"
Yoko blushed. "He's a very nice man..."
"That's not what I was asking Yoko. Do you want to do this love making with him?"
At this point Yoko's face was as red as her hair. "Is this a question you ask of your Queen?"
Shokei laughed and mocked bowed. "I'm sorry your majesty."
"Oh stop that," Yoko replied. "Shoryu is Shoryu, even if he is as beautiful as a god."
Keiki felt like he had been stabbed. Having to listen to those words spill from his Queen's lips was like bathing in blood. His whole body seemed weak, right down to the numbness in his toes. Deaf to the world, he moved away from Yoko's bedroom door, afraid that if he listened any longer, he might just go through it and give her a tongue lashing.
"What about Kei-Taiho?" Shokei asked.
Yoko became instantly flustered. "You're kidding...Keiki... Why would you ask something so absurd?"
"Oooooo I see," Shokei retorted. "You love Keiki... I knew it!"
"Are you always so brash?" Yoko chirped.
"Yes," Shokei shot back.
"Truth is neither of us is allowed to love. My role as Queen is to serve and protect the people. I’m even not allowed to have children. I was once told my children are the people of Kei. The gods proclaim it. As for Keiki, being a Kirin sort of puts a damper on things. Besides! He probably doesn‘t even know what it is!"
Shokei gasped. "Who told you that you can not have a child? Look at my father and mother... I was born before his reign, but I was not struck down by the gods. He was chosen by fate to become a king. Secondly, you are of both Horai and this world. How can they stop you?"
"That is true?" Yoko genuinely smiled. "Maybe someday, when the kingdom is stable it might be worth a venture."
"With Keiki or Shoryu?" Shokei laughed.
Yoko picked up a round cushion from a nearby chair and tossed it at the laughing ex-Princess of Hou, who easily caught it. "The Kirin it is." Yoko's jaw dropped. "You don't know when to quit."
"I don't quit easily, not until I get the truth or something that I agree with," She leaned back in the chair cushions.
"Fine I will tell you... I love Keiki and Shoryu as my friends. The same for Rokuta, Rakushun, and even you."
"Liar, but I'll have to accept your answer for now," Shokei replied. She stood up and headed toward the door. “I’m going to bed. I’ll see you after the morning meeting.”
Yoko rolled her eyes. She hated the morning council meeting more than anything in the world. It was something she had in common with Shoryu. They both skipped out time to time. Unlike Shoryu, Yoko regretted it. The main reason was Keiki. He would nag and scold her for her absenteeism. He never let her live down the fact she left him alone in the lions den.
Yes, after two years of ruling a kingdom. There is still more to learn. Maybe Shoryu had a trick or two. It was going to be hard concentrating on business with him at her side. “Keiki…” She pressed a finger to her lips while looking at her reflection.
They were going to travel together…alone. Anything could happen. “We’re talking about Keiki!” She shook the thought from her mind and sat down on her bed. Her precious sword was at her bedside. Suiguu began to glow an odd silvery aura. She wanted to look, her curiosity ate away until she reached for the sheathed blade. Slowly, she withdrew it and looked at the mirrored edge with wide eyes.
In the middle of a forest, upon the ferns, moss, and soft plant-life, she lay on her back. Above her slight frame, Keiki looked at her, pinning her down with one arm. He was so very still, sweating. His pale skin shimmered with each flicker of the campfire. Long blond hair pooled around them, her fingers running through his thick mane, massaging his scalp. She intensely arched against his muscled body. “Keiki…” Her knee skimmed along the outside of his straining thigh. He thrust into her, almost forcefully. Her whole body tensed, tightened with the instant their bodies conjoined.
His other arm curled around her bicep and behind a shoulder, her head cradled in his hand while his mouth ran the length of her neck.
“Tell me...Is this what you want?” He whispered hoarsely against her pulse. "Tell me you want me." His body rolled until she rode him. With eyes rolled closed, Yoko tossed her head back in complete ecstasy. His hands eagerly gripped her hips, allowing him to press into her. "Yes... I want you."
She collapsed against his chest, shuddering with completion. He arched into her several more times, spilling into her while moaning her name.
As she sheathed the sword, Yoko's eyes remained wide as plates. Was this the truth? On the other hand, it could be what she desires...
