Prelude: The Beginning of the
End
Sighing for the umpteenth time that
day, Hitomi glanced out the classroom window to overlook the glassy blue sea
reflected in her deep green eyes and shining in the midday sun; her mind wandering, as it had been for the
past few weeks. What it had been wandering to though was what disturbed her
most, for she had not thought of them for almost four months… she had not
thought of Him for almost four
months. And what was even more disturbing was what made her think of them
again: the dreams…. Dreams and nightmares that she had not experienced since
the day she returned to Earth; and as of late, she had been suffering from
these confusing nightmares relentlessly for almost two weeks.
And they frightened her. She had
not been witness to a dream as brutal as these since she first arrived on Gaea.
The pain and suffering, sadness and despair… hate and death. She did not understand them—they were confusing and
jumbled—a myriad of terrifying images and emotions. And they left her restless
and exhausted, making her daily routine fall to pieces. Her friends where
beginning to notice as well; Yukari and Amano relentlessly nagging her about
her ailments… but she refused to tell the two of them—she refused to voice what
she really thought—refused to make it real.
Real… nothing was real anymore; it
all seemed like some twisted, unnatural excuse for what people called life.
Nothing made sense anymore, nobody seemed to understand and Hitomi felt so
completely alone because of it. After she left Gaea she just
grew more withdrawn and depressed, more empty inside with each passing day. She
didn’t understand why she had left in the first place… When she arrived back on
Earth, she couldn’t believe what she had done! Why, why did she leave Gaea;
why did she leave Allen and Merle and Millerna
and all of her other friends behind… why did she leave Van…?
Hitomi had beaten herself up over
this constantly. She was such an idiot! She loved Van—she had even admitted it
to herself… but she still left him and his world behind. She thought she would
go back and visit—visit anytime she wanted, now that Earth and Gaea
were connected… but maybe that was the reason she didn’t go back…. You know how
there’s something always there at your fingertips, always there but always
ignored and then the day you finally realize you want it, you can’t have it?
That was this moment, or at least that’s how it felt to Hitomi. She took that
gift for granted and now she was regretting it.
Maybe
I wasn’t supposed to go there…? Or maybe none of it ever really happened and
it’s all a very detailed dream I had…? Yeah, right… now I’m just deluding
myself, next they’ll—”
“Kanzaki-san? Kanzaki-san! Are you
listening?!” Rather abruptly pulled from her thoughts by her teacher, Hitomi
just sat there, staring up at the man dumbly for few agonizing moments before
the bell rang and he sighed irritably.
“You’re off the hook this time
Kanzaki-san… but don’t let it happen again. Class dismissed!” Blushing in
embarrassment, Hitomi gathered up her belongings as quickly as she could and
hurried out of the classroom, wanting to leave and get home as quickly as
possible without anymore hassle. This
week… just keeps getting worse and worse. And these dreams aren’t helping
either…. Sighing and rubbing her head where a headache was starting to
form, Hitomi just shuffled her way down the crowded halls, not paying attention
to anyone or anything around her. When she finally made it out of the chaos,
she nearly tripped down the steps—or would have if it hadn’t been for a pair of
strong arms catching her.
“Whoa! Easy there Hitomi… are you
even paying attention to where you’re going…?” The laughter-filled voice
startled Hitomi for a moment—reminding her of an all-too-familiar blonde back
on Gaea.
“Allen…?”
Looking up at her savior, she realized it definitely wasn’t the knight, nor was
she back on Gaea. The worried frown on Amano’s face was enough
to banish that thought quickly enough. Hitomi blushed and looked down in
embarrassment, muttering a shy thanks as Amano helped her onto her feet; Yukari
picked up Hitomi’s bag and handed it back to her, the same frown gracing her
features as Amano’s.
“Hey, Hitomi, you’ve been pretty
out of it this week… are you okay?” Yukari didn’t need to ask, she already knew
what it was that was bothering her closest friend, but maybe if Hitomi talked
about it and got it off her chest, it would make the short-haired girl feel
better. Said girl looked up at her two closest friends and just shook her head,
sighing in a way that clearly showed her exhaustion—both mentally and
physically—as she turned and began to walk away from the two confused teenagers
and their school.
Amano and Yukari shared a look and
quickly followed after Hitomi, worried for the sensitive girl and not wanting
her to walk home alone in her current condition.
“Hey, Hitomi… how about we stop and
get some ice cream on the way to your house…? My treat.” Amano beamed down at
the shorter girl and winked at Yukari, hoping it would work, but Hitomi just
shrugged and sighed once again, obviously off in her own world now. Amano and
Yukari frowned and the brown-haired girl tried another approach.
“Hitomi… you know… the track meet
is in a week, how about you and I go out and practice some tomorrow after school?
Huh?” Yukari then placed her hand on Hitomi’s shoulder in a gesture of comfort,
but it turned out to be the biggest mistake she could have ever made.
~Screams.
Suffering.
Blood—rivers
of the crimson elixir.
Excruciating
pain and agony.
‘NOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Save us! Hitomi, why, why did you do this to us!?! Hitomi, end it, end it now!!
Make our suffering end Hitomi!’ More screams, more anguish and suffering.
Fire,
unbearable heat, all around, destroying everything. Buildings crumbling,
explosions all around, causing even more chaos in its wake.
‘Hitomi,
please… save us…’ The faces of her loved ones—here, on Earth, all pleading and
crying for her to help them; all bleeding and suffering—because of a death she
signed them for… because she left Gaea.~
With a startled jerk and harsh
scream, Hitomi tore herself free of Yukari’s touch, stumbling away from her two
friends in a frenzied panic. Yukari and Amano just stared at the sandy-haired
girl as she doubled over, looking as though she was going to be sick—her chest
heaving in uncontrolled patterns and her dark green eyes dancing around wildly.
“H-Hitomi…? Hitomi?” Yukari was
about to move closer to Hitomi when Amano stopped her; she looked to the blonde
questioningly, but Amano just shook his head in a negative and continued to
stare at Hitomi with such a lost and sadly resigned look in his eyes. Something
was wrong with Hitomi, Hitomi was sick… she couldn’t stay here any longer….
Hitomi couldn’t stay on Earth anymore.
Suddenly they felt it: the
unexplainable feeling of everything around them coming to life, the static in
the air rising in magnitude and the subtle shaking of the ground beneath them
unable to contain the energy from within. It was coming for her once again—the
light that took Hitomi twice before—it was coming to take her away… for good.
~ * * ~
That vision—that nightmare… what was that she just saw?
It wasn’t like the visions she has experienced before. Those were no where near
as horrifying as this one was…. What did this mean…? What were her visions
trying to tell her this time? The Earth couldn’t be in trouble from some
strange invading force—could it? There was no way this could just be
coincidence though….
Suddenly she felt it, the
all-too-familiar feeling of being surrounded and filled with warmth and light,
protection and happiness: a feeling she had not felt in over four months,
something she had so desperately wished for in her secret of secrets: the
Pillar of Light that had once created such chaos and unhappiness in her life
was again enveloping her in it’s warm, magical light, creating it’s path for
Hitomi once more.
Happiness welled up inside of her,
but she was filled with shame almost as quickly when she saw the twin
expressions of horror cross Amano and Yukari’s faces as they ran to try and
pull her back from the light, even though all of them knew they wouldn’t be
able to. Hitomi started to reach out for them, but hesitated and in the brief
moment of selfishness, she disappeared, leaving Amano and Yukari screaming
after her, begging for her to be brought back. All they were left with was
Hitomi’s whispered apologies…. Forgive
me…
