Summary: Grief, its ramifications, and a new beginning. When Tamahome's grief begins to overwhelm
him, help comes from an unlikely source.
Takes place during the series on the ship during the voyage to find the
first Shinzaho. Yaoi, Tama/Tas, dubious

This story started off as a one-shot deal, and ended up
being the beginning of a series that I’ve dubbed Changing Fate. I’ve revised it to reflect that, hopefully
giving it a little more depth. I think
it’s better, and I hope you do as well…
-_-;;
To Yahnkehy: Thanks for the poke. ^_~

As Tasuki descended the steps to Tamahome’s quarters on the
ship, he thought back to his conversation with Chichiri. The mage had told him about the slaughter of
Tamahome’s family at the hands of one of the Seiryuu seishi.
He had just stood there, mouth hanging open in shock. How much pain was the man in? How could anyone possibly survive that kind
of trauma?
Chichiri had told him that Tamahome needed his good humor to
cheer him up, so he took it to heart.
He’d bait Tamahome like he usually did, trying to draw him out. Usually those encounters ended with Tamahome
dangling him overboard. He absolutely
hated being held out over the water like that, but it was worth it to see that
brief but real smile the action drew from the other man. But as soon as it was over, the fake smiles
he gave everyone else would return. His
friend was going downhill fast.
Tamahome had been withdrawing into himself lately. He froze out anyone who expressed concern
with a halfhearted smile and a flippant assurance that he was all right. Now he just stayed in the room he had chosen
for himself, farthest away from all the other seishi, insisting that he was
just tired and needed to rest.
But Tasuki wasn’t buying it. Everyone seemed willing to just let him be, trusting that he’d
just get over it. Well, some things you
can’t just get over. And if no one else
could see that, it was up to him to force the issue.
He reached the door and knocked, and then went in without
waiting for an answer; he didn’t want to take the chance that Tama would try
and send him away. What he saw broke
his heart. Tamahome was curled up in
bed, staring blankly ahead. He shut the
door behind him and ran to his friend’s side.
“Tama? Snap out of it!” When he shook the warrior’s shoulder gently,
those gray eyes slowly focused on him.
“Tasuki?” He asked brokenly.
“Shit, Tama! Why’re
ya in here by yerself? Want me to go
get Miaka?”
“No!” Tamahome
exclaimed. “I can’t talk to her, she
doesn’t understand…”
“All right, but ya shouldn’t be alone right now. What about Chichiri or Nuriko?”
“No! Don’t go
anywhere, you stay, just stay with me,” Tamahome said as he grabbed
Tasuki by the arm, pulling him closer.
“No problem Tama, I just thought you’d want somebody around
who was better at this whole comfortin’ thing.” Tasuki lay down next to him, holding his friend, lending what
strength he could.
“You’re warm,” Tamahome said quietly, moving as close as he
could to his friend without actually laying on top of him.
“Yeah, yeah. Most
hotheads are. Just try an’ get some
rest.” As he watched Tamahome drift
off, he wondered whether or not he should leave, but then realized he didn’t
have much of a choice as Tamahome still had a death grip on his arm. Besides, despite the circumstances, it felt
really good to be able to hold Tamahome like this, to be able to actually do
something. He got as comfortable as he
could and settled in to watch over the man lying next to him.
Even in his sleep, a pinched expression marred Tamahome’s
features. Tasuki raised a hand to his
face, wondering if he could smooth those lines away, but stopped himself from
trying it. He sighed. Things were hard enough without him making
them more complicated. Eventually his
eyelids got too heavy to fight with anymore, and he succumbed to sleep as well.
