Rolling Donuts and Mystery Women

A/N: This is a remake of a piece of fanfiction I did a long time ago. I’ve been considering redoing this work for quite some time, until now. This piece takes place before he runs into the Gun-Ho Guns, but after Meryl realizes that he is Vash the Stampede. I know this throws things off a little but I did that to make this story work. I may have a few of the Gun-Ho Guns show up if I continue from where I left off the first time. That is, if any reviewers want me to. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did writing it.

Chapter 1- Rolling Donuts and Mystery Women

A blonde spikey-haired man in a red trench coat sat on a bench one morning in the quiet town of April. His aquamarine eyes looked through yellow lenses at the morning sky. For the first time in a while, he was allotted some peace. Few knew who this man was, and even fewer knew of the past that haunted him. But right now, all the Humanoid Typhoon was doing was waiting. A quick stomach growl brought him back down to earth. What was taking that priest so long to buy some donuts? He was starving, and watching the children play in the town square was not helping his appetite any. His head rolled over to see the insurance girls arguing about something or other. But once again his stomach distracted him.

All of a sudden, a metallic gleam caught his eye; and when he got a better look, he found it was the gleam of a woman’s gun. She was tall and thin; long black hair framed grey eyes. Her eyes were sad, but he could tell the sadness was in remembrance of something. Tight black pants clung to sexy legs, disappearing into heavy leather boots. She wore a grey button-up shirt, the sleeves gone. Her arms were covered by long, black, fingerless gloves. Her leather belt holstered two guns securely on her hips. And, just like almost any other woman, she was truly beautiful in his eyes.

Cocking a goofy grin, Vash stood up and walked over to her. “Excuse me, miss?” He said, nearly striking a pose before closing his eyes and blushing to be nonchalant with his delivery. “I just happened to noticed you carry two guns and-”

”Who the hell are you talking to, Vash, an imaginary girlfriend?” He spun around to see Wolfwood standing there with the donuts Vash had so desired.

”I was speaking to this lady when- hey!” The woman was gone. “Where’d she go?” He looked around; surely she hadn’t gotten that far. But to his surprise, she was no where in sight.

”Dreaming of women again I see,” his friend joked as he handed him a donut. “Maybe I should cut you off.”

”I swear she was right here!” Vash exclaimed, but hunger soon took over his mind and he settled for eating his delicious breakfast. “She was real,” he thought to himself. “Women just don’t vanish into thin air like that.” Nevertheless, he ended up spending the rest of the morning eating donuts.

However, throughout the rest of that day, he kept having the feeling of being watched. He did his best to catch at least a peek of who might have been stalking him, but to no avail. It certainly didn’t help that he couldn’t get his mind off of that morning’s incident; it seemed too familiar to him. He didn’t wish to worry his friends, so he kept his usual smile and goofy routine going, but the fear that something was wrong would not go away.

That night, at a local bar, Vash decided to explain to them the entire incident that occurred that morning, and how he felt like he was being watched. Wolfwood, of course, only blew it off as his imagination playing tricks on him, and ordered him a drink to calm his nerves. But Vash continued to insist on what he saw was true.

”I know I wasn’t imagining it!”

”I think you’ve lost it, Mr. Vash.” Milly stated kindly between sips of her drink.

”No kidding,” Meryl spat as she looked at him. “Maybe he’s got desert sickness?”

”That’d be a first,” Wolfwood retorted. “But on the other hand…”

”GUYS! I know I saw her, at least I think I did…” Vash went silent.

”Excuse me, sir?” A young waitress had come over. “A lady has ordered this drink for you, and asks that I give you this note.” Smiling, she hands him both the note and the short class that contained the drink. Vash could smell the strong liquid as she sat it down, most likely vodka.

Vash looks up at the kind waitress and noded. “And who is this lovely lady that has ordered me a drink?” Already he was sounding a bit more like his macho and goofy old self.

”Why she did, sir!” The waitress motioned over to a corner table before walking off, only for Vash to nearly fall out his chair when he recognized who it was.

”It’s the woman from earlier!” He whispered to the others. “I knew I wasn’t seeing things!” The other three looked over only to see her for what seemed barely a moment before she seemed to vanish into nothing, like a dream.

Wolfwood nearly choked on his drink. “What in God’s name just happened?” He hissed, trying to get his voice back. Certainly something very weird was going on here.

”I knew I wasn’t crazy,” Vash boasted. “I-“

”Vash, look at this note!” Milly exclaimed, handing it to him. Quietly, he recited it to the others.

”Dear Vash the Stampede,

I have a service I request of you, you will be paid handsomely for your trouble. Come to the fountain in the square at midnight if you are interested, bring your gun, and come alone.”

Vash’s face suddenly became very grave, what did this woman want of him? And how did she know who he was? Vash sat, thinking. Hew knew very well all of the possibilities that could happen if he agreed to meet the woman that night. His gut told him not to go, but his heart said yes. After all, he couldn’t pass up the chance to get a better look at that beauty.

”I’m going,” Vash finally announced. Deep resolve could be seen in his eyes as he swigged down the drink and stood up from his seat.

”It may be a trap!” Meryl spat, blocking his way to the door.

”I need to, Meryl. Go with Milly and Wolfwood and find somewhere to stay the night,” He took out his shades and put them on. He smiled at her warmly, seeing worry grow on her face. “I’ll be back, I promise.” And without another word, he went to prepare for his midnight encounter.
