A/N: So, little one-shots inspired by Flyleaf’s “All Around Me.” Multiple chapters expected, but not necessarily interconnected. Translation: I’ll probably skip around a bit. Enjoy!
Chapter 1: Baratie
Nami sat on the deck of Going Merry in her lounge chair reading the newspaper in the early afternoon sun. Across the deck from her, Zoro sat in the shade dozing on and off while Johnny and Yosaku lazily attempted conversation in order to stave off an afternoon nap. Ussop was nowhere to be seen, but every now and then a small explosion could be heard from the aft of the ship.
All in all, it was a peaceful afternoon. An unusual change from the chaos Nami had gotten used to when being around and sailing with Luffy. The change was due to the goofy captain being indentured to the former Captain Zeff, owner of the Baratie.
‘A change that I shouldn’t even worry about getting used to,’ Nami thought to herself as she turned the page in the newspaper. As with the months before, there was nothing but bad news.
‘It just shows that I’ve been here too long,’ she noted with some guilt and much disappointment. ‘I don’t know why I’ve stayed so long.’
“Oi, Nami!”
Nami looked up and realized exactly why she had stayed so long. Luffy jumped up on deck and strolled over to her. She smiled at him in greeting, setting down the newspaper.
“Luffy, aren’t you supposed to be working?” she chided. He grinned wide and sat down on the end of her lounge chair with a plop.
“I’m taking a break,” he shrugged, then his eyes turned serious. “Nami, I need you to do something really important.”
The way he said it gave her goose bumps.
“What?” she asked, awed at how serious he seemed.
“Would you make me a sandwich?” he begged. “I’m starving and that smoking chef Sanji says I can’t have anymore food today because I broke too many dishes.”
Half way through his request, Nami had hung her head in exasperation. Partly at him for the dumb request, but mostly at herself for thinking he might actually say something serious. With a heavy sigh, she got up from her chair and beckoned him to follow her to the galley.
Another sign that she had been there too long was that she knew just a sandwich wouldn’t be enough for him. Luffy could eat the ship’s entire food supply in one meal if left unsupervised. So, in light of the fact that he’d be whining for more food before he finished what he had, Nami prepared everything quick and easy that was stocked in the galley for him.
“I’m still hungry,” was his inevitable response after inhaling everything she’d made twenty minutes later. He was sitting at the table rubbing his stomach and looking glum.
“You need to go back to work,” Nami instructed him. He grinned at her again with crumbs stuck to his chin, making her crack a smile in return.
Without warning, he stood and encompassed her in a quick hug. He let go and was out the door of the galley before she could even react.
“Be back later!” she heard him yell back to her. “Thanks for the food!”
Nami closed the door of the galley and leaned against it, her hands and chest pressed up against it as she rested her forehead on it. She inhaled deeply and exhaled even deeper, trying to convince herself that she could do it.
“Tomorrow,” she told herself. “I’m leaving tomorrow.”
She wasn’t at all convinced.
My hands are searching for you
My arms are outstretched towards you
I feel you on my fingertips
My tongue dances behind my lips for you
Luffy returned long after dark, dragging his tired body back onto the ship and sprawled out on the deck, too exhausted to go down to the bunks.
“You look hungry,” Nami commented, walking down the stairs to the main deck. Luffy raised his head to look at her, then plunked it back down.
“I got in trouble for taking a long break,” he explained. “They made me stay until all the work was done. They even made me mop the sleeping quarters of the guys. And I didn’t get dinner.”
“No wonder your tired,” Nami said. She stood over him and offered a hand. “Come on. I made you something to eat.”
Luffy gave her a look as if she’d just told him he’d just been unanimously voted Pirate King by every pirate in the world.
“You’re the best!” he cried and jumped up with newfound energy. He bounded up the stairs two at a time and was half way through the food she made him by the time she got into the galley.
“I know it’s not much, but I’m also not a very good cook,” she shrugged, watching him stuff food in his mouth at an alarming rate.
“Dis is gweat,” he spouted, spitting crumbs of food all over.
She smiled in spite of herself and unconsciously rubbed her left arm. “Well, it’s late, so I’m going to turn in for the night.”
Luffy made a sound that resembled a goodnight as he finished up the last of the food. Nami wandered down to her room and changed for bed, but sat at her map desk instead. Out of the drawer she pulled the map of the Grand Line she’d stolen from Buggy and studied it.
It was old and had a few blood stains and tears in it, but it still looked like it would fetch a good price. Out of a different drawer she pulled a small notebook that had pages and pages of numbers, each bigger than the last. On one of the pages close to the end of the notebook was a number she was starting to get excited about.
89,927,463
It was how much she’d stolen so far since the beginning.
‘With this map and all of the things I can hock from the ship,’ she thought, ‘I should be very close to ninety three million.’
That was a very exciting thought: only seven million left.
‘I bet that if I sold this ship…’
Nami didn’t even finish that thought. It felt wrong. She didn’t know why, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she sold the ship. Yes, it was for a very good cause, but with only seven million left, she could get that much just one more trip off the island.
In truth, she could have brought that much in this time around, but she had been…distracted during this outing. She rested her chin on her folded hands, which were flat on the desk. She still had to come up with some way to get everyone off the ship tomorrow long enough for her to set sail.
The next thing she knew she was being lifted from her chair and carried to the bed. She started at first, not realizing where she was or who was carrying her. She blinked away her sleepy eyes and began to make out Luffy in her vision.
This fire rising through my being
Burning I'm not used to seeing you
I'm alive, I'm alive
“Luffy, what are you doing?” she slurred, still not fully awake.
“Putting you to bed,” he answered, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. He gently lowered her to the bed and for no reason she could fathom, he lay down next to her.
“You have your own bed,” she reminded him, hoping her cheeks weren’t as red as they felt.
“I know, but yours is better,” he shrugged.
She rolled her eyes at his response and climbed under the covers. He remained above them but threw an arm over her waist and attempted to hog the bed. She tolerated it for a few minutes before she gave him a good shove and told him to go find his own bed.
He retaliated by encompassing her and the covers in his arms and tickling her through them. She squealed loudly at first before clamping a hand over her mouth, realizing that the other boys were sleeping and just on the other side of the wall. Using her free hand she shoved him hard enough to make him fall out of the bed. He landed on the floor laughing, but did not attempt to get back in.
Instead, he sat on the floor next to the bed and rested his chin on it. She attempted to swat him away with a pillow, but he caught it and hid it behind him. She frowned at him and rolled over so her back was to him.
“I miss this,” he said quietly. She rolled over to look at him. “It’s so boring over there with those chefs. I don’t get to spend any time with my namaka anymore. I much rather spend my days just hanging out with you.”
Nami just stared at him with her mouth slightly agape. He threw her a wide grin before getting up and leaving the room. He waved the stolen pillow at her as a goodbye and disappeared out the door. For a minute, Nami couldn’t think. All that filled her head was the feeling of his arms wrapped around her. With a heavy sigh, she plopped onto her back and scrunched her eyes closed.
I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing
“I never said I was your namaka,” she whispered, her voice quivering as she rolled onto her side and hugged herself.
Try as she might, she couldn’t keep the tears from escaping, which inevitably led to quiet sobs that she tried to muffle with her quilt. She didn’t get any sleep that night and the next day, she took the ship and was gone.
A/N: This chapter’s really PG-ish, but the next one’s not. I’ll be posting as soon as it’s finished. Tomorrow or, heaven forbid, as late as the weekend. Feedback is loved so lemme know what you think.
