Life is magic within itself. Each life-changing event that takes place in our lives is a surprise. Our best friends, colleagues, and even lovers were once complete strangers to us. These surprises are what make life what it is. For that very reason, one mustn’t try to hasten life, for many more surprises await, good and bad, every second that goes by. Live every moment as it is, for the next, you may fall in love, and everything will change.
On a quiet July evening, high in the hills of Kanto, a trainer and her Pokémon settled down for their evening meal. Kite, a young but experienced trainer, had traveled the entire Kanto region with only a single Pokémon: an oddly coloured white Eevee, named Chu’nyan. Surprisingly enough, the two had earned five gym badges together, despite Chu’nyan’s size and power- or lack thereof. They were close, for they’d known each other since the small Eevee was born, hatched from an egg, carefully looked after by Kite.
After having set down their camp for the night, Kite tied her light carmine hair back and began preparing their dinner over the fire for which Chu’nyan had gathered wood. No one was quite sure why Kite refused to keep any of her caught Pokémon, but at least she and her Eevee could work well together.
The sun soon disappeared behind the distant mountains, and by then, the two had just started eating. Starly could be heard settling into their nests in the surrounding trees, and numerous bug Pokémon could be heard emerging at the same time.
“So,” Kite sighed after a while. “We’re not far from Lavender town, according to this.” She said, glancing down at the map she had laying across her lap. When Chu’nyan didn’t respond, she smiled. “How’s the soup? I put some extra potatoes in there for you.”
The Eevee gave a loud squeal of approval and went right back to eating. “You and your potatoes.” Kite said. A few seconds later, Chu’nyan paused, looking carefully at a tree that seemed to emit a quiet shuddering noise. A blue ball of light moved out from behind the tree, hearing Chu’nyan’s growling. Looking up at it with her curious pale blue eyes, Kite froze.
“A… Duskull…?” She reached for her Pokédex. “I thought they had red eyes… Is that one shiny?” The ghost Pokémon merely floated there in silence, staring at the two without any kind of fathomable expression.
“Nope.” Kite said a minute later. “Just… different.” When she noticed the Duskull still there, she smiled. “Would… you like to eat?” She asked. Suddenly, it seemed to explode with excitement at the invitation and hurried over to the trainer’s side. Chu’nyan growled again, but Kite ignored her.
“Here you go,” She said, offering the Pokémon a bowl of soup. Gratefully, it took the bowl in its rag-like hands and plopped itself down on the ground right next to Kite and began to eat.
“It’s… so cute!” Kite squealed, but Chu’nyan didn’t like the idea of a ghost Pokémon so close to her trainer The Eevee knew her attacks would have no effect on it, should it try to harm her trainer. “Don’t worry, Chu’nyan, it seems friendly.” Kite said, going back to her own food.
It took a few more minutes of her quiet growling being ignored, but Chu’nyan finally began to relax and finish her dinner. After everything was packed up again, Kite crawled into her sleeping bag and sighed, looking up at the sky. “Nice stars.” She yawned, turning on her side. Chu’nyan hurried over and curled up on the foot of the sleeping bag, while the Duskull watched curiously.
He’d seen trainers sleeping in bags like that before, but he never understood why. Not wanting to leave this trainer yet, he floated over and laid himself down next to her, refusing to let the Eevee’s growling bother him. Though it was still nighttime, he lay contentedly with her, thinking about many things.
Hours passed, and the sunlight gently broke the darkness on the horizon. Duskull shifted at the light, floating over to Kite’s bag and digging through it, becoming increasingly desperate as the sun rose further. Finally, he found what he was looking for: a Pokéball.
In just a few hours, he’d become so attached to Kite, he didn’t want to go back to Lavender Tower to his friends… He wanted to stay with her. Carefully placing the ball next to her in the sleeping bag, he poked the button on the center and was pulled inside.
Kite groaned as the sun rose over the mountains and shot its beams into her face. “Ugh, Chu’nyan…?” She yawned and reached over to pat her friend’s head, who growled a little before opening her eyes and yawning too. Chu’nyan looked around, apparently relieved. “Oh?” Kite sat up, rubbing her eyes. “Where’s Duskull…?” After a minute, she sighed, climbing out of her sleeping bag. “I guess it had to go.” She glanced at her bag and sighed at the mess. “Looks like he took some stuff with him.” She said, moving to get herself ready for another long day.
“Where to?” Kite asked Chu’nyan as she rolled her sleeping bag back up. “Lavender Town?” Chu’nyan shook her head violently, and Kite smiled. “Right… Fuchsia then.” She said, strapping her rolled up bedding to her pack. “Come on.”
Most of the day, they spent walking, discussing strategies for defeating the gym leader in Fuchsia city. Kite had been told by a passing hiker that the leader was a poison-type trainer, named Janine.
“I’ve got Pecha berries,” Kite told Chu’nyan. “And I’ll be sure to buy some antidotes when we get there.” Chu’nyan nodded, looking out to the ocean. Route 15 stood right next to the sea, providing the travelers with a nice view as they walked along. Kite sighed, following her gaze. “After this gym, we’ll have enough money to go to a different region… How does that sound?” Chu’nyan nodded again, apparently off in a daydream.
“Those hotels in the Orre region looked nice…” She said a moment later, and Chu’nyan looked up at her with a wide grin. “But for now,” She said, looking at the approaching gate. “Lunch sounds nice.”
Upon entering the city, the two were greeted by a young male trainer, who looked about Kite’s age.
“Hey there, ladies.” He said as his Growlithe greeted Chu’nyan with a confident grin. “Are you here for the Safari Zone?” He asked. “Oh, I’m Andrew, by the way.” He said, reaching out to shake Kite’s hand. “Hello,” She said sweetly. “No, we’re here to battle the gym leader. Is she around?” Andrew smiled. “Yeah, she is. Growlithe and I just beat her.” He said, showing his badge off to her. “I’d recommend some fire Pokémon on your end, though. I don’t think you’re Eevee would be up to it.”
Chu’nyan growled at that. “I think we’ll be okay.” Kite said with a smile. The other trainer nodded. “Right. Would you mind if I treated you to lunch…?” He asked. Kite gave a huge sigh. “That would be great…” She said wistfully. Andrew laughed and turned. “Okay, this way then.” He said. Kite lifted Chu’nyan into her arms and followed him into the city.
“What kind of Pokémon do you have, anyway?” Andrew asked, taking a bite of his sandwich. Kite smiled at Chu’nyan, who was glancing around the restaurant curiously. Andrew stared at her in silence. “…Just that Eevee?” Kite nodded, reaching into her bag. “Yup. But look,” She said, holding her badge case out for him to see. “Five badges. And you still think my Eevee isn’t up to a challenge?” He scratched his head, obviously impressed. “Well… I guess not, but…”
He grinned suddenly. “Hey, would you guys mind battling Growlithe and I?” Chu’nyan smiled back at the dog Pokémon evilly. “We can take you.” Kite replied, taking a drink of her water. “Later, though. I need to buy a few things while we’re here.” Andrew nodded, and all of them quickly finished their food.
Later, Kite walked out from a Pokémart, putting her purchases into her bag. “That should be it.” She said, looking up at her new friend. By then, the sun had begun to set. “Let’s get going.” She said to Chu’nyan. “Wait, where are you going?” Andrew asked, trailing behind them. “Out to the hills.” She replied. “Chu’nyan and I like to rough it. We can have our battle there, too.” He smiled. “Perfect. C’mon, Growlithe.” He said, speeding up to walk beside them.
Minutes later, they found a nice spot on top of a hill, overlooking the city. “Here’s a good spot.” Kite said, laying her sleeping bag out. “Let’s make this quick.” She and Andrew stepped back a few paces and sent their Pokémon out to stand facing each other. “Ready?” Kite asked. Andrew grinned. “Ladies first.” Kite inwardly rolled her eyes and called out, “Chu’nyan, use Return!”
Immediately, the Pokémon were flying at each other. Growlithe grabbed Chu’nyan’s scruff in his teeth and threw her to the side, using Bite repeatedly as she squirmed and growled. Kite winced. This looked a little too violent… While she was distracted, the other trainer ran to her, knocking her down onto her sleeping bag. “Ouch, hey!” She yelled, not noticing the Pokéball fly out of the bag and land a few feet away. “What’s your problem?” She growled as he gripped her wrists and pinned them down. “Nice idea to want to come out here.” Andrew replied calmly. “No one can hear us.” She squealed as he playfully bit her neck, sucking here and there.
She squirmed under him, wishing now that she’d taken time to train herself as well as Chu’nyan. “Get off of me, damn it!” She spat. Meanwhile, Chu’nyan was kept busy by Growlithe, kicking and scratching at him to get away and help her trainer. He hit her hard with an ember attack and she flew back, landing on something hard and crying out in pain. The Pokéball rolled out from under her trembling body and from it, appeared Duskull, who gave a delighted wail, before realizing that something wasn’t right. “…!” He gave an angry snarl at the sight of someone hurting his new trainer.
The tiny ghost Pokémon flew at the boy, spitting a Shadow Ball at his head. “Oh- What the-?!” He sat up and released Kite’s hands to rub his head. Seizing the opportunity, Kite pushed Andrew away from her as Duskull spat another attack at him. Chu’nyan watched the attacks and turned to her own opponent, attacking in the same manner, having picked up the technique from watching Duskull. Growlithe backed away as she fired her newly learned Shadow Ball attack at him. Soon enough, the dog Pokémon retreated to its Pokéball, leaving his trainer unaided. Panting and terrified, Kite stumbled back into a tree and sat there as Chu’nyan ran to defend her. Backing away, Andrew held his hands up nervously as Duskull used his Glare move on him, intending to scare him away. Soon enough, the trainer retreated, running down the side of the hill.
Hurrying back to Kite, Duskull nestled himself close to her chest, cuddling her happily, knowing that he’d protected her. She held on to him as Chu’nyan rubbed against her side, also happy to see her trainer safe. “Duskull… you followed us?” Kite asked a moment later. Pulling himself away from her, he floated over to the Pokéball and carried it back, happily presenting it to her. She stared at it in silence. That must have been why her bag had looked rummaged through. Duskull had been looking for a Pokéball. It just so happened that the one he held now was the only one she carried with her, since Chu’nyan didn’t have a Pokéball…
“Oh,” She said, taking it from the eager Pokémon. “Okay… I guess you’re coming with us then, if you want to...” She looked at her Eevee, who didn’t seem to mind, after what had just happened. Gratefully, Chu’nyan rubbed against Duskull, who smiled and gave a sort of laugh. Kite got up and walked over to her things.
“I think… I’d feel better if we stayed in the city tonight. Her two Pokémon seemed to agree as she re-gathered what she’d put out. “Okay then, Chu’nyan… Duskull.” She said, lifting her bag to her shoulder. As they made their way down to the city, Duskull floated by Kite’s head, his disappointed expression seeming to be asking her for something. “What’s the matter, Duskull?” She asked. He pouted at the mention of his name. “… Oh, you want a nickname, too?” She asked with a smile, and he nodded. “Okay… You’ll have to let me think about it.” She said, smiling.
As the three moved through the city, Kite sighed, picking Chu’nyan up and cuddling her. “Kind of a small town, isn’t it..?” Soon, they arrived at the Pokémon center and quickly found a room in which to stay the night. Closing and locking the door, Kite dropped her things on a chair and walked to the bed to remove her shoes.
“So, Duskull…” She said. “Chu’nyan and I were going to take the Fuchsia gym challenge tomorrow… Do you want to help out?” Duskull bounced happily in the air, making quiet noises to show his excitement. Kite walked into the bathroom with her bag a minute later. “Be right back.” She said, closing the door. Chu’nyan curled up on the bed to wait, but instantly fell asleep, exhausted from her battle with Growlithe. Curious as to what his trainer was doing, Duskull phased through the bathroom door to find out. Kite glanced at him in surprise.
“Oh, hello there…” She said, turning her bare back to him. “I’m trying to change… um…” Duskull pouted, his stomach growling. “…Oh?” She looked back at him. “I guess you must be hungry…” She smiled and reached for her bra. “We’ll have to go get you something then.” She said. Duskull waited in patient silence as she pulled her clothes back on. “Let’s go then.” She opened the door and looked over at Chu’nyan. “Hey, Chu, Are you hungry?” She asked quietly, leaning down next to her. The Eevee groaned and shook her head. “Okay then,” Kite sighed. “We’ll be back in a while.”
By then, the counter in front was closed down for the night. “Looks like we’ll have to go out to eat.” Kite said, hurrying to the door. “Come on,” She called back to Duskull, who seemed to be distracted, scowling at something down the hall. “Hey, are you coming…?” She asked, and he snapped out of it, hurrying to her side.
Just down the street was a small café, about to close its doors. “Excuse me,” Kite said to the old man at the door. “I hate to bother you, but-” She stopped, seeing his expression directed at Duskull. “A Duskull, I’ve never seen one before…” He said dazedly. “Are you hungry, little fella?” He asked, patting the Pokémon’s head. Duskull nodded, and the old man lifted him from the air and carried him inside, Kite following behind them. The old man placed Duskull in a high chair and locked the front door before walking back into the kitchen. “I’ll bring you something good!” He said in a jolly voice.
Kite sat at the table next to the window with Duskull. “Good thing he likes you, huh?” Duskull shifted in the high chair, looking at her with an unsure expression. She giggled, looking out the window with a smile as Duskull watched her in careful silence.
About an hour later, after Duskull had finished his food, Kite carried him down the street and back to the Pokémon center. “Oh, the door’s locked…” She said one they arrived. Floating out of her arms, Duskull phased through the door and unlocked it for her. She smiled, taking him in her arms again. “Good work.” She said with a grin as she stepped inside. As they made their way back to the room, Duskull floated from her arms, scowling again as someone rounded the corner. It was Andrew, holding his sleeping Growlithe. Without sparing them a glance, he walked out of the building in silence.
Kite put Duskull down on the bed once they got back to their room, but he followed her into the bathroom again. “Hey,” She said, looking at him. “I can take care of myself in here, don’t worry…” She said, but he refused to leave. She sighed and turned around, undressing and then donning her pajamas. “Come on then.” She said, carrying him back to the bed and laying down, Chu’nyan curled up at her feet. “Goodnight,” She whispered, turning the lamp off and pulling the covers over them both. She dozed for a while, relaxed by the blue glow of Duskull’s eye.
An hour later, she woke up from a shallow sleep, to find him watching her still. “Broadcast sounds nice…” She said quietly. “I like that name for you.” He moved closer to her, cuddling into her body. “That’s it then…” She yawned. “Broadcast.”
