L didn't flinch as the remote came flying, craching against the wall behind him, scattering plastic and batteries everywhere. Neither did he react as his sweets was wrecked out of his hands, tea cup spilling over on the coffee table and soaking his papers in dark liquid. He didn't even bother to look up as the USB in his laptop was pulled out, followed by the computer itself being thrown on the floor, obviously breaking. The USB went flying out the window, L simply thought he could get Watari to collect it later.
"You may dispose of my belongings, I can simply buy new ones." He said calmly, finally looking at his unusuall guest. "Although, I have to admit that I expected far better behavour on your part. Perhaps spending all that time with Mello rubbed off on you."
"Shut up! You know nothing about Mello or me! You never cared!" A chair was thrown to the side, almost flying into the wall from the strength behind the blow. "You just sit on your ass, content as shit, never giving a single fuck about others! It's your fault Mello ran off! It's. All.Your.Fault!"
L's unblinking eyes was trained on the person infront of him, noting how his shoulders shook, his breath hitching to hold back angry tears. He knew Matt would never react like this if it wasn't for Mello, it was always about the blond.
"Matt, surely you do know that I could have done nothing to prevend Mello from leaving. You are simply here because you need someone to take out your anger on." The red head twitched, his head snapping up to glare at the detective.
"Don't you even dare to pretend you didn't have anything to do with this." His voice dripped with acid and poison. "If it weren't for your stupid rank system he would still be here, you know as well as I that Mello could've been an exillent detective, maybe even surpass you if you gave him the chance." L shook his head, dropping his gaze to the soaked papers, seeing how the text spread out and formed into blurry spots on the pages.
"Perhaps, but he could just as easily abuse his position. I have yet to pick the one to become my successor Matt, have it ever occured to you that I might not go after the rank at all?" He reached over to pick up the tea cup, placing it gently on the saucer. "To be honest, I am surprised that you of all people react like this. I've never seen you.. what's the word Mello used to say.. ah yes, lash out."
His right cheek hurt from the blow Matt delivered, sending the older man to the floor. For a breef second he wondered if he should simply stay down, but his body was already moving on its own. L sat up awkwardly, rubbing the tender spot while staring up into emeral green eyes.
"Mello's worth millions of millons of you." Matt sneered, and for a moment L thought he would be hit, or maybe kicked, again. When the gamer didn't do anything he slowly stood up, towering over the red head. For being fourteen he sure had strength. Must be from playing around with Mello all the time.
There was no point in trying to reason with the redhead right now, anger and hurt being the only thing that kept him going.
"I don't know what to say Matt. I'm sorry that he left? I'm sorry the system broke him down?" L moved over to his chair and sat down again, his knees pulled up against his chest. Matt didn't move from where he stood, his hair covering his eyes but not the wet trail of tears running down his cheeks.
"You don't know.." L simply looked at him, waiting for Matt to continue. "You'll never know how much you ment to him.. You were everything he ever talked about, I'm gonna be the next L, I'm gonna be number One and fight along side L, the best detective ever." Something similar to a laugh emitted from the boy, making L focus completely on him. "Everything he did, he did for you, so you would see him and not just his scores, but you never cared about him, only Near and his fucking puzzles."
"Are you sure you're not here because you are jealous?"
"Jealous? Of what?" He snapped, face turned to the detective.
"Yes, It appears that you quite dislike that he was so fond of me."
"..Fuck off." Matt made a poor attempt to secretly wipe away his tears, but L didn't comment on it and was even kind enough to pretend he was busy looking at his ruined paperwork.
He was interrupted, however, as Matt walked over and slowly pulled the files from his hands. He didn't seem to be angry anymore, just drained, so L let him wrap his arms around his neck, knees hitting the floor infront of him as Matt leaned his upperbody against his.
"You bloody wanker.." was heard somewhere in L's shirt, and he couldn't help but smile at the gamer's poor attempt to sound angry. "I really hate you."
L simply let the comment slide.
In the back of his mind he knew Matt would react like this if something were to threatend his and Mello's friendship, and like always, he was right. Matt wouldn't run off terrorising Near, obviously the younger boy would have nothing to do with Mello's departure, it would be himself, L, that would be the target of the gamers wrath. He didn't mind though, the boy was confused and scarred, having suffered from neglect as a child. Of course he would use that brains of his to figure out the person who was most likely the reason for his best friends sudden disappearance.
L felt Matt exhale against his shoulder, finally calming down, body relaxing. The ebony haired man jerked slightly as he felt the gamers fingers trace patterns at the back of his neck. It was soothing, and he couldn't help but mimic the movement against Matt's back, earning another relaxed sigh from the boy. The redhead had never been a big fan of physical contact, but he didn't seemed to mind being touched (or rather pulled) by Mello. Neither did he seem to mind L, never flitching away if the elder man approched or reached out to tap him on the shoulder or hand him his test paper personaly. Perhaps he just knew neither Mello or L would ever really hurt him, atleast not L.
Matt needed the contact now though, always clinging to Mello if he was sad or nervous. Mello hadn't allowed it at first, many of the other children laughing and making fun of how Matt acted, but as the blond realised that his friend really suffered if he couldn't hold onto him he allowed it. He always threw his arm around the redhead's shoulders, holding him close to his side untill he calmed down, sensing immidiatly if Matt needed the comfort. Anyone who dared to question or make fun of the act got serverly punished, and in the end no one gave a second glance whenever they walked into a room hand-in-hand. It was just a natural process for Matt, something to make him feel safe, and since Mello wasn't there to hold him now, L would have to do.
Although, the act was something the detective thought Matt had grown out of. The gamer didn't spend nearly as much time clinging or running after the blond as he had done in the beginning, finally learning to stand up for himself and talk back if another child would taunt him. That he would suddenly revert back into his clingy personality surprised L, but he should've forseen it. Of course he would take several steps back into himself if his comfort zone disappeared, so L allowed Matt to hug himself closer, gripping the white fabric of the older mans shirt in his hands to make sure L wouldn't push him away.
He knew the moment would pass soon enough though, and this episode would not be spoken of again, but it was right now that mattered..
L was just happy he was the one Matt chose to cling on to.
