Chapter 9: Reverie

Darkness, it seemed to be devouring her. The darkness of her past in league with the darkness of space. She stared blankly out into the empiness of space as she stood in the navigation deck.

\"It\'s cold in here, you\'re going to get sick if you stay in here dressed like that,\" Faye\'s voice said as she walked over to Rain\'s side.

\"Cold doesn\'t bother me,\" Rain said softly.

\"Obviously,\" Faye joked.

Rain raised an eyebrow. \"I\'d say it goes the same for you, with that horrid yellow get up of yours.\"

\"At least I have my red shirt, your standing here in shorts and a tank top. Plus, you\'re not wearing shoes. Are you trying to look like Ed?\" Faye shot back.

\"At least she\'s happy...\" Rain sighed.

\"She\'s a kid, she doesn\'t know any better.\"

\"She\'s not a normal kid.\"

\"Obviously,\" Faye snorted as she exhaled a plume of smoke. \"She wouldn\'t be Ed if she was normal.\"

Rain smirked. \"Why are you here, Faye?\"

\"I\'m worried about you. This is the most I\'ve heard you talk in a week. Ever since we got you out of that hospital.\"

Rain\'s grey eyes darkened.

\"Don\'t close up on me, Rain!\" Faye snapped.

Rain looked at the floor and then started for the door.

Faye snatched Rain\'s hand and stopped her. \"Rain... don\'t run away. I\'m not mad at you, not anymore.\"

Rain locked her eyes with Faye. \"I watched him kill Raven, and then he killed Grin...\"

\"Grin told me about how you were friends when you were called Eve. Who\'s Raven?\"

Rain took a seat on a chair and sighed heavily. \"Raven was... a cowboy that I met on Callisto. It was after my bounty first came out. He was playing sax at the Blue Crow, it was Grin\'s night off. He took me to his apartment and we... well, we slept together and he asked me to give up being a syndicate girl for him.\"

Faye was leaning on a rail her face showing her eaess ess to listen to Rain\'s story. \"So, you left him I guess?\"

Rain nodded. \"Yeah, sure, he was hot, but I was dedicated to the syndicate. That night that I talked to Grin about you, Vicious caught up with me and he sliced my gut open, Raven must have been coming home from a gig or going to one, I don\'t know, but he walked by and recognized me and tried to defend me. Whoever was with Vicous that night, killed him. I can\'t really rememeber, I was losing blood and my mind was getting fuzzy.\"

Fyae nodded and sighed. 'm s'm sorry, Rain. He sounded like a nice guy.\"

Rain smiled slightly and nodded. \"Yeah, he was sweet... for a cowboy, that is.\"

Faye raised an eyebrow. \"So, he\'s not the guy you\'re hung up over?\"

Rain snorted. \"No, he was a one-night stand. Anyways, who said I was hung up over anybody?\"

Faye rolled ehr eyes. \"Oh, come on! I am a woman, Rain, I can tell when another woman is in love!\"

\"Like you are with Spike?\" Rain asked.

\"I don\'t know what you\'re talking about,\" Faye huffed.

\"Oh, please! You two are so in love, it\'s almost sickening!\"

\"Fine, so I love him. It\'s not like he feels the same, he\'s too hung up over Julia!\"

Rain shook her head. \"He\'s an idiot, and a guy.\"

\"True...\" Faye agreed.

\"Faye-Faye! Faye-Faye! Jet person is looking for Rainy-Rain! Have you... Oh, Rain! Ed has found you!\" Ed declared as she danced onto the deck.

Rain waved her hands in front of her face as she shook her head. \"Shush, Ed! I\'m trying to avoid Jet!\"

Faye raised an eyeborw. \"Why?\"

\"He want\'s cooking lessons.\"

Faye snickered.

\"Rain also has a thing for Jet-person!\" Ed sang.

Faye coughed as Rain turned red. \"How-?\"

\"Ed can hear Rain moan Jet person\'s name in her sleep!\" Ed stated as she stood on her head.

\"I knew you were hung up on someone! But Jet?\" Faye inquired.

Rain rolled her eyes and stood. \"I\'d rather teach him to cook than have you two tease me.\"

Ed giggled as Faye sang \'Rain and Jet sitting in a tree...\'. Rain shook her head as she walked out off the deck and headed for the kitchen.
