If he had any energy to waste, it would have been used in rage, anger, towards the mocking teasing men below him.
Not that he was pissed from their constant prodding, or even the small stones that bounced off him at times. It was nothing like that. He cared less what they did to him, or what they had done. All that mattered was how the bastards were using him.
Zenigata sighed, wincing in pain a jagged rock glanced off his face. He hated heights. The world swung dizzily under him, the branch supporting his weight creaked in a distressed tone as he was used like a child’s birthday party Piñata again.
Henry had warned his guards against such mistreatment. He didn't want the cop dying or something before Lupin arrived. But the gag muffled his low cries of pain, and the cult leader was elsewhere.
It seemed as though his waking world had become nothing but an ever-present throb of pain the last days. How many, he wasn't sure. They bled together, nothing separating one from the next.
Only today stood out. As they waited. For Lupin. And that was what made the cop angry. He was bait to destroy the thief. Strung up like a Christmas ham, harsh ropes tearing at his skin, snagging on stitches that had appeared after one the blank spots in his memories.
“He coming!” the call rang out, in time to the loud clear clanging of the bell hanging from the watchtowers peaked roof. Instantly, the blows stopped, as all eyes turned to the path into the clearing.
“Stupid asses! Didn't I tell you not to mess with the bait?!” It wasn't without some satisfaction Zenigata watched as Henry appeared from the brush, causing his guard to drop their weapons. But it was too late. The cult leader tore stick from the one of his guards’ hands and set upon them with a rage.
If he hadn't been in such pain, Zenigata would of laughed as they cowered and pleaded under the blows. Bastards deserved it.
“Attacking your own men? Not much of a leader.” Lupin commented in a level tone as he stepped out of the foliage opposite of the path. He grinned as the entire lot of them turned to face him. Did they really think he was going to just waltz down the path?
Like ghosts, Goemon and Jigen slipped from the trees, on either side of their friend, deadly eyes watching the armed masses.
He didn't see them, but felt as they moved closer, ready to do what would be needed to protect him and the old man. True friends indeed.
Revenge… that was the only word that moved to the front of his mind at the sight of his favorite foe.
Even in the canopy-filtered light, the dark bruises that painted his skin stood out like a weed among roses. Blood streaked the exposed flesh; a crimson soaked rag knotted tightly over one foot. He would of appeared dead, swinging from his oak tree perch, if not for the fact he turned his battered face to the sound of Lupin’s voice.
“I’ve come for the cop.“ Lupin stepped forward, towards the leader. “I assume you want back your fake idol.” He shrugged, catching the small golden statue that Jigen threw towards him.
Henry felt the words as if a blow. “Fake? FAKE?! Where the hell is the real one, you bastard?!” He bellowed, slamming the stick he still held hard against his prisoners’ bandaged foot.
Even through the gag, the scream of pain was loud. Hate burned like a fire behind the thief’s continually smiling eyes. “I could kill you right now… I may die, but so would you. Now, I'm sorry to say, but that is a fake. But, it did have a map in it. So, question is, my friend, how bad do you want me to find the real one?”
Without the idol, they were nothing. All his power would be gone; his follows disappear like leaves on a windy fall day. “What do you propose?” He growled, through gritted teeth. Once they had what they wanted, he would kill them all. Slowly.
“Turn the old cop over to me. He knows the ancient text the map is written in. Without him, we can’t do this.”
Easy enough to do. He nodded to the men behind him. Lupin would get the cop. But he still had the upper hand. Even if the smiling monkey before him didn't know it yet.
The rope whizzed loudly against the branch as the far end was severed, dropping the captive to the ground with no ceremony. Henry smiled as Lupin face, for only a second, contorted in anger at the hard landing that caused the cop to ball up in pain.
Not a sound was made that didn't belong to the woodland; Goemon and Jigen came forward, gathering up Zenigata.
Something was wrong… the man was too trusting that he would come back. Would bring him the true gold statue. It didn't add. “Lupin, lets go. The old guy needs some help.” Concern was heavy in the gunman’s voice. And confusion. “Holy shit Lupin-”
Even though his heart skipped a beat at those hushed words, the thief never took his eyes off the man in front of him. And the look of glory on his face. “What's the Matter Jigen?”
“It’s the stitches, isn't it?” Mocking laughter curdled in Lupin’s stomach. Stitches? What the hell did they do? Stitches?!
“You see, the reason I trust you will return, Statue in hand, in three days, is because you don't, the bomb in his chest will go off. Killing him. And anyone near him. “
That broke his tightly held false front. Shattered it.
“You god damn son of a bitc-!” Henry grinned broadly, slipping a small control out of his pocket even as Lupin stepped forward in anger. Without hiding his motions, he pressed on of the buttons decorating its front.
“LUPIN! We got problems!” Jigen bellowed.
Henry yawned and pocketed the remote again. “You see, I am in control here. Right now, you friend does need some help. There is more then just the bomb in him. And anytime I want I can send the dumb pig into the most painful of convulsions. So….. see you in three days?”
The mocking laugher echoed about him as he ran to help calm Zenigata, whom was twitching like a man possessed.
It took almost two minutes till the shudders ceased racking him body, pain constant through out the span. Sweating and weak, he couldn’t but allow the thief look him over.
“Lupin… why didn't you just leave me?”
Lupin patted the face, the stubble poking at his palm. “Because I care too much Pops.” He smiled wanly, wishing he had the power to erase the pain behind those heavily lashed eyes looking into his.
“Lupin, the scum has vanished.” Distaste hung heavy in Goemon voice. “Justice will be served… they cant escape that.”
Three days. “Looks like we fix you on the run old man.” Lupin helped the cop to his feet, Jigen offer a shoulder as well.
And they too faded into the forest.
