Angela strode proudly along the mock docks within cerulean gym, confident she would wipe the floor up with this gym leader. She was, of course, as usual, followed closely by Moonlight. He really didn\'t like water, and this gym was no different. Even if Gary had spent the time to give him a new move, that didn\'t matter. These pokemon were under water most of the time, and Moonlight certainly didn\'t like swimming, not to mention the moment he dove in to go after the leader\'s pokemon, he would be seriously at a disadvantage. He wasn\'t meant to be free-moving in the water; he was a land-based quadruped, and as such, the water was not his element. But fight he would; Angela\'s beck and call was his life, now. Not that he was going to complain; he loved her to bits, and he\'d chosen this life after watching them grow up from kits to almost-adults.
"Well well. Looks like I have another trainer to wallop!" Misty commented, glancing from her diving podium to the would-be rookie trainer and her strange looking Pokemon. "What on earth is that?" she muttered, eying over the black-and-blue cat-like pokemon.
"That is an Umbreon. You\'re a gym leader, haven\'t you ever been to-" Angel begun, but Gary quickly clamped his hands over her mouth.
"What she means to say, is this Pokemon is one we haven\'t seen in this region before. Professor Oak named it Umbreon." Gary lied. Misty glanced suspiciously at Gary then at the Pokemon, then stepped off her podium.
"Well, I suppose a new pokemon isn\'t exactly breaking the rules."
"Just shut up and go with it, I\'ll tell you why later." he whispered to Angel, as he let her go once again. She nodded softly, then took a few steps towards the red headded bikini wearing gym leader.
"Now that\'s all settled, I challenge you Misty. Might wanna get that Gym Badge out, you\'ll be surrendering it to me!"
"I accept your challenge, trainer. We\'ll do this one on one. Your Umbreon against my Pokemon. And don\'t bother trying to use your boyfriend\'s little necklace there, I count it as an illegal battle aid." Angel\'s lips fell open into a silent gasp. How did she know about the scanner?
"According to League Rules, a battle aid is a device that divines the stats and most likely attack impending. This doesn\'t do that, it tells Angel exactly what she is entitled to know; the level, gender, and moves of the opposing pokemon!" Gary barked, taking a step towards Misty.
"Just as big as a jerk as last time, huh Gary?" Misty replied, rolling her eyes. "You tried that argument LAST time."
"And as I recall, the final call was it was legal, so don\'t try that shit again!" Angel flicked a rather surprised glance at Gary. He used to talk like that all the time before he was champion, but recently, he\'d seemed a lot more mild-mannered. What brought this twinge of his old self out?
"Gary, it\'s fine. It\'s only a one-on-one. It\'s not like she has some secret legendary pokemon or something. I\'m sure I can do just fine without the scanner..." Gary frowned.
"Well, she only ever uses a Staryu and Starmie. Sometimes her stupid Psyduck."
"Let\'s get this battle over with, then." Misty barked, as the two lone swimmers in the gym took spectator seats nearby. "And I wouldn\'t count on any of those three pokemon....Let\'s just say I have a new trick up my sleeve. Your little black cat there against my..." Misty paused for flair as she reached for the blue-colored Dive Ball, Moonlight taking a battle position in front of his trainer. "GO, SHIMMER!" she exclaimed, tossing the ball with the use of her pokemon\'s nickname. Such a girly name, she noted, as the rather large looking four foot glowing mass appeared from within the pokeball.
"Poliwraaaa!" came the voice. Angel\'s left eyebrow rose. What was that?
"Ohhhhhhhhh shit..." muttered Gary. "That has to be at least level 25...Its not good, Angel..."
"That\'s right! So much for my stupid little pokemon, huh? That little cat looks like a Dark Type, and don\'t think I don\'t know he\'s illegal for use in this region. I look forward to teaching you two a lesson! And I\'ll be so kind as to even let you use that little scanner of yours just to show you how screwed you are..."
Angel frowned as the somewhat smaller Moonlight eyed the pokemon before him. She pushed the white button once again, unleashing her scanner.
"SCANNNING. Pokemon present: Umbreon. Shiny male. This pokemon is of level thirty one and a Brave nature with the following moves: Bite, Quick Attack, Confuse Ray, and Sand Attack. Poliwrath. Male. This pokemon is of level twenty eight with a Hasty nature and the following moves: Hypnosis, Brick Break, Surf, and Focus Punch. The opponent has three other concealed pokemon. Would you like a list?"
"No..." Angel replied, frowning as she closed the necklace again. That sounded like a tough pokemon; did poor Umbreon stand a chance? "Well, Moonlight, do you want to go on and try, or shall we find another pokemon to challenge her with?"
"BREON!" Moonlight replied, stepping forward. His nature would likely cost him a lot one day, Angel noted, as she accepted the battle.
"Okay. Moonlight, let\'s get on the defensive! Confuse Ray!"
"Shimmer, use Brick Break! Let\'s get that pokemon out in one try!" Gary winced as Umbreon launched the confusing beam of ghostly energy. The Poliwrath began to teeter here and there in mid stride as his hand came down. Moonlight braced himself for the hit, but much to his surprise, the large mass of water ended up striking himself in the shin and falling on his face with a muffled "Poliiii."
"Good! There\'s no sand in here, so let\'s go straight in with a Quick Attack!" Moonlight obeyed, and quickly rammed himself into the Poliwrath\'s flopped over mass, returning back to his original position in a matter of seconds.
"Shimmer, shake off that confusion and use Hypnosis!"
"Use Quick Attack again, Moonlight!" As the large teetering Pokemon began to unleash his hypnosis, Moonlight slammed once again into the Poliwrath\'s mass. As he returned to the spot he was in before, the lumbering Poliwrath fell to it\'s side, the hypnosis attack promptly reflecting off the water and striking the confused water fighter in the face. The blue toad had fallen asleep.
"Breon?" Moonlight murred, tilting it\'s head as the Poliwrath begun to snore.
"Okay Moonlight, keep using Quick Attack! Bite will do half damage on that thing!" Pathetically, the sleeping toad didn\'t move as Moonlight laid in one, then two, then three, four, and a fifth Quick Attack before it finally staggered up to a stance.
"Shimmer, Hypnosis!"
"Moonlight, Confuse Ray!"
Finally, staggering out of it\'s confusion, the Poliwrath, with it\'s higher speed, managed to fire a hypnosis just before Moonlight fired his confuse ray, but only by a second. The two attacks collided with each other, dead center of the battlefield. The two powers began to charge and conflict, and grew. As the orb of charging power kept growing, neither pokemon could stop - if they did, they\'d be struck by the orb.
"This doesn\'t look good. Everyone out!" Gary shouted, grabbing Angel by the hand as he dashed out of the Gym. Misty wasted no time following suit, as well as the swimmers, who were last out. Angel tried to fight to get back to Moonlight, but Gary held her back. As they cleared the gym past the Poke Mart, the curious town members peeked out of their homes. Within the windows of the gym, a large black orb could be seen growing slowly in size.
"What\'s happening?"
"What is that?"
"What\'s that black ball?"
"Who\'s in there?"
Were some of the murmurring comments. But, as Gary opened his mouth to explain, a loud explosion rocked the town windows and doors. Smoke could be seen fuming from the water-type gym. Angel finally broke free of Gary\'s grasp, and started running for the Gym, followed shortly by the Gym Leader herself. As she burst into the smoke-filled gym, the rest of the town followed into the door. A few people released some flying pokemon, who set to clearing the smoke. As he billowing blackness plume was rushed away, Angel\'s eyes first noticed that the pool water had all but been blown away.
"Moonlight? MOONLIGHT?!" she called out, looking frantically for the pokemon.
"Shimmer?" Misty spoke, climbing down the ladder into the pool. After a long moment, Misty collapsed. Angel gasped, and quickly made her way to the girl. As she rounded the corner within the pool, around the dry dock leggings and cement, her eyes fell on a horrible sight.
"Oh my God...GET A PARAMEDIC!" she called, kneeling beside the rather gruesome mess of intestines and bloodied blue flesh. Moonlight\'s tail lay buried halfly under the pile of Poliwrath\'s flesh, being frantically dug out by Angel, whom kept finding, at least so far, that Moonlight was in one piece.
"What happened?!" Gary exclaimed, as he followed her into the base of the pool. Once he too beheld the sight, his lips fell open. "Oh my god..."
"Well? What is it?!"
"Yeah, tell us!"
"Is the Gym Leader Okay?!"
"GET A PARAMEDIC, AND NURSE JOY!" he barked at them, who merely stood at the door and gawked at the situation with their questions. "THE DAMN POLIWRATH EXPLODED."
