Chapter ten.
By Aurora Moon
This is an Mikami and Light Chapter. J I actually had this very scene plotted out in my head for weeks now, and I’m so glad to get it out into paper finally! ^_^
I hope you’ll enjoy it. I actually planned to have this out much sooner, but I was dragged away rather unexpectedly for three weeks! Ugh, the most worst three-week trip I ever had in my whole life. I won’t go into much detail here, but needless to say by the end of the week, I wound up with sunstroke and arms so sun-damaged that they had blisters all over them.
I was also so burn out mentally. :P so I had to take a LONG break from writing in order to recover from all that crap.
I’m still recovering a little bit, but this won’t stop me from working on this story and releasing those chapters soon as possible. :P
======================================================================
Mikami groaned, as he got up. His head was throbbing badly, and he couldn’t see that well at first.
However his vision managed to clear up as he blinked a few times, and rubbed the mucus out of his eyes. It was then he sat up quickly, suddenly realizing that he was no longer in that torture chamber.
He found himself in a very unfamiliar room. Ryuk was standing by the end of the bed, chuckling softly.
“About time you woke up. I was starting to think that there was something wrong with you.” A male voice said.
Mikami turned his head quickly, and much to his shock he found Light Yagami sitting in the corner, with some sort of chain around his right leg.
“You’re Light…?” Mikami’s eyes widened. “ It can’t be!”
“you know me? Well, you have me at a disadvantage then. Can you tell me your name?” Light Yagami smiled, as he got up.
Mikami calmed down a little bit, as he moved to sit on the end of the bed. “My apologies. I’m not sure if you remember, but I helped you out once with some sort of stalker... that's why I remembered your name. I just don't forget that sort of thing easily. I’m a lawyer and my name is Mikami Teru. But what are you doing here? And where is here?”
Light’s faintly puzzled face cleared up as he started to remember. “Oh yes! You were that nice man who helped me out... I remember now! How strange that we should meet again like this.”
Mikami just nodded.
“ As for what I’m doing here, It turns out that the FBI was working together with the Japanese task force at the request of L. and L actually suspected me of being Kira for a long while. That’s why I’m in here. This is actually some sort of prison designed like an apartment. I suppose because L wanted to hold me here for as long as possible but couldn’t put me into a empty cold cell, due to the fact that my father's a high-ranking policeman himself, and thus had to give me special treatment.” Light answered, as he went to sit down by Mikami.
“So, what’s YOUR story? Why did they put you into here? ” He asked, pretending to be oblivious to the reason why Mikami might be in here.
Mikami took this in, and then sighed. He took in deep shuddering breaths, hiding his face in his hands so that Light wouldn’t see his look of despair.
He had planned in a few things happening if he sent that tape. The first thing was to get the attention of the other Kiras out there, and try to get them stop the killing of innocent people. He hoped that his message would have the Kiras focus on killing criminals only.
The second part was to get L distracted enough so that he wouldn’t start targeting his god. He had hoped that by making himself the decoy, that he would give Light enough time to awaken on his own. He even had gone to the trouble of putting his death note away in a separate private bank registered under a different name, so that the others much less L wouldn’t be able to get to it.
He should have accounted for the fact that L would have already began suspecting Light-sama, if he had that FBI guy following Light around. How could he be so stupid?! He had been so excited at discovering how special his destiny was that he didn’t think things thoroughly as he should have. He would not fail again!
“Hey, are you alright?” Light asked, sounding very worried. “If you’re scared of the fact that I’m a Kira suspect… well, don’t worry. I’m not the sort that would kill anybody at all. I’m not Kira.”
Mikami looked up at the face of his god. Light’s eyes were doe-eyed, practically brimming over with purity and innocence. He couldn’t help but smile at how those innocent eyes were looking at him. Why didn’t he see it the first time he met him? It was clearly obvious that Light wasn’t normal. Most human beings wouldn’t be able to naturally send off such a vibe of purity like Light could.
He couldn’t help but look upwards at Light’s lifespan. It hadn’t changed at all, and still had that Zero number with a slash through it.
“I’m fine… I’m just shocked. I thought I was the only suspect that the Anti-Kira task force had. I was even more shocked to find out that the other suspect they had been some young man who clearly has nothing to do with Kira.” Mikami then laughed. “I guess they must be far more desperate than I thought…. I guess all the rumors about the police being inept was true!”
He then looked around the room, looking up at the walls to see if there were cameras around. Sure enough, there was a rotating camera mounted on the left corner of the room, facing opposite the door. Mikami then smirked at the camera.
‘So, L, you want to see if putting us two together will get a videotaped confession out of us? Well, two can play that game… and I’ll protect my god from being discovered as the true god Kira!’ Mikami thought.
Light then smiled slightly. “huh, you believed me so easily when I said I wasn’t Kira? How can you be so sure?”
Mikami couldn’t help but smile at the young man again. “Well, I was just giving you the benefit of the doubt. After all, I’m not Kira neither! All I did was do somebody a favor by mailing some package for them…. I never thought it would get me arrested as a Kira suspect.”
Light raised his eyebrows. “really? That seems a tad farfetched…. I did so much more than that to get on the list of Kira suspects.”
Mikami blinked, asking: “ what did you do?”
Light then replied with a straight face: “I found out that this Anti-Kira Team within the police organization did something very horribly perverted with my family. Soon as I had a chance to meet with one of the responsible team members, I started punching him in the face repeatedly. Needless to say, that team member didn’t appreciate getting assaulted like that out of the blue. It’s actually one of the reasons why I’m in here.”
That got a laugh out of Mikami. He then got up. “Wait a minute…. You know what L’s team members look like? I didn’t think anybody would be able to find out that easily!”
Light looked up at Mikami. He sighed, pretending to be annoyed. “Eh, I was able to find out due to the fact that my father used to head the team that was working on the Kira case, until the Anti-Kira team took over. I don't know if L is a part of this though.... I hear he always works alone and that nobody's ever seen his face. Unless you know something about L that I don't know, I'm gonna assume that's still the case here.”
“Oh, is that so? But that still doesn’t explain how you were able to meet them. Don’t tell me you were able to meet them though your father just like that? ” Mikami wondered.
Light nodded, looking bored now as he kept up the charade. “Yeah, it was just that easy. When you’re in a family like mine, all you have to ask and you get it. Although I didn’t get to see L himself like I hoped… so I don’t know what he looks like or anything like that. Apparently not even the Anti-Kira team knows what he looks like neither. So I guess the rumors of the team and L working together was false. Too bad though, I would have liked to meet the guy himself. I've always wondered what he was like. ” Light managed to look mildly disappointed as he said this last part.
Mikami was slightly disappointed at this, but in many ways he understood. L wasn’t just any normal detective—this was a person who had actually successfully killed Light when he was Kira in a past life!
Mikami knew that L had to be working with the team... the information he collected so far indicated that had to be the case. It would be too strange if L had chosen to work on his own this time around.
There was the possibility that L remembered bits of that past life…. And were ensuring that Light or Mikami couldn’t get revenge on him for past deeds, by hiding who he was now from everyone, even his own trusted team members.
Or quite possibly, like Mikami he did not remember anything and only knew what he was told, and were actually only restraining them to try to collect evidence? He couldn't help but feel that maybe it was actually a little bit of both. Maybe he didn't speak to Light at all personally like he had done with Mikami, because he was scared of Light. That would certainly make sense...
Mikami broke off his own train of thought to ask Light-sama something he had been wondering.
“What did they do exactly, to get you this angry? After all, you say you’re not Kira but you wanted to inflict harm the Anti-Kira team?” Mikami couldn’t but think out loud, as soon as he first thought of that. He then looked over at Light quickly. “But you don’t have to tell me, of course… if it’s too personal.”
Light sighed. “Well… I suppose there’s no harm in telling you. After all, you’re a prisoner like I am now.” He then paused slightly, before answering. “You see…The Anti-Kira team didn’t just stop at having that FBI guy follow me around. He put cameras and other bugs into the house. At first, I was okay with that part too… Because hey, they were only trying to catch Kira. Sometimes you have to play dirty to catch one of the worst criminals in history. And, I wanted them to see that our family had done nothing wrong, or that we didn't have to do anything to do with Kira.”
He paused again, before continuing. He acted as if it was difficult for him to talk about, his voice trembling with fake anger. “That is, until I found out how many cameras they had actually put into my mother and my sister’s rooms as compared to the rest of the house. You know, they actually put 20 hidden ones in each bedroom belonging to the women of my household? The worse part is that we were told that there would be no cameras in the bedrooms or in the bathroom to give us some privacy when changing our clothes and the like. and that there would be one hidden camera into other rooms. The women of course had no idea that my father had agreed to surveillance until they found those cameras in their bedrooms. My father was shocked, because he certainly hadn't agreed to the part about cameras being put into his daughter's and his bedroom so that the anti-Kira team members could see the women of the household changing clothes. And now my mother thinks that my father took a part of this perverted behavior... so not only did they invade my family's privacy, but they pretty much ruined my parents' relationship. ”
Mikami gasped at this. “What? But putting hidden cameras into people’s bedrooms without people's consent is illegal in Japan! Even if they belong to the police. That’s a large lawsuit waiting to happen. No wonder why you kept on saying they were perverted.”
Light shook his head, looking more angry now. “Yeah. Thanks to them, my relationship with the family besides my father's pretty much on the rocks too... once they found out that I had been aware of the cameras just like my father did and didn't tell them.” He scoffed. “It's funny you know... I put all my trust in the team because I had known a few of them from before, just like my father did. After all, they were good guys.... or at least they were supposed to be. We were so sure that they wouldn't do anything untoward like put cameras into my little sister's bedroom. But they ended up destroying our family.”
Mikami nodded, his eyes narrowing. “Yes. That certainly shows how much corrupt those on L’s side is! I would have defended the honor of any female family member like that too, had that occurred with me as well. Gee… I doubt Kira himself would had done something so perverse and despicable.”
Light sighed again. “Yeah, I’m starting to think that too.”
Silence filled the air for a few minutes.
He then chuckled. He smiled at Mikami, as if he was telling the lawyer something funny. “You know the funny thing? Normally I was on L’s side, thinking that all criminals needed a trial before being murdered outright. I was of the mind that everyone, even those with a record, was to be considered innocent until proven guilty. As such, what Kira was doing was wrong in my eyes. And I actually wanted to be just like L like himself—to have surpassed my father and to become the top detective in the world. I wanted to catch criminals and solve cases everywhere, to help people in need.”
Light’s face then contorted into a bitter, angry expression. “But seeing how The Anti-Kira task force acted towards my family, and how cowardly the police is when they refused to publicly stand up against Kira or L out of the fear for their own lives… I’m not so sure what the whole fucking point to it all is. I’m starting to think that there’s no true justice in the world, that this world is corrupt…”
Mikami stared at Light, unsure of what to say.
Light blinked, and then smiled sheepishly. “Oh… sorry, I didn’t mean to blurt out all of my thoughts like that. I guess I was so angry and just needed to vent to somebody. you were the only person who I could rant to right now… I’m so sorry about that.”
Mikami shook his head. “No need to worry. Thanks to you, I learned a lot more than I thought I would had. And for what it’s worth… I think you’re starting to realize the truth.”
Light raised his eyebrows. “And that is?”
“In this world…” Mikami replied, “Only Kira can be the true justice. He is truly a divine being who sees all. And unlike the corrupt, human so-called justice, he won’t let the worst of criminals walk away free on a mere technicality.”
Light stared at Mikami for a while. He then tilted his head in a quizzical way. “You really believe in Kira, huh? Even if you haven’t met him at all? Unless you did…”
Mikami nodded, glancing at the camera out of the corner of his eyes. He would have to lie a little bit now…. Even if it mean that he would be temporarily deceiving his god for now. This was for his Kami’s own good. He had to create a false lead for Light’s enemies to follow.
“I do believe in Kira, yes. But I haven’t met him yet…. I’m actually only an new recruit.”
“recruit? What do you mean?” Light wondered.
Mikami chuckled. “Of the Kira’s new world order, of course. But I can’t tell you anymore than this otherwise I would be betraying not only the other followers, but Kira.”
Light gasped. “You’re in a cult?? Are you kidding me? You don’t seem like the type to be in a cult at all… don’t they like, tell you to shave your head and things like that?”
Mikami pretended to get very upset at this, creating a very believable performance. “I would prefer that you not use that term! We are not a cult, and they do not require anything of us expect that we believe in Justice and Kira fully, and do anything in our power to make evil itself vanish from earth!”
It was Light’s turn to pretend. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean anything personal by it at all. I was just surprised. You don't even look like you could be part of something like that.” He said rather meekly, acting as if he was properly chastised.
Mikami just nodded, silently accepting the apology. It felt so strange to have his god apologizing to him like that, when he had done nothing wrong at all. And to see Light-sama act so meekly in front of him... he felt a strange thrill of power. He knew this sort of behavior wouldn't last forever though, once Light-sama awakened and regained all of his memories... so he shouldn't really let it get to his head.
Ryuk chuckled. He then leaned over to Mikami. “So, you and the mortal god you worship is now trapped together under the watchful eyes of L. what are you going to do now?”
That was a very good question, actually...
Mikami got up, noting the chain wrapped around his ankle. “How far can we get in those chains?” He asked of his god.
Light got up too as well. “Oh yeah, I forgot for a second there that you still haven't seen the rest of the apartment. I guess I was so absorbed in meeting you and finding out why you were here. *sigh* and I had to go and completely lose it in front of you telling you my life story too. Come on, I'll give you a tour. You'll find how far you can go then.”
Mikami then followed Light out of the apartment. Light was gesturing at doors and random sections of the apartment as he spoke. “And this is the bathroom.... the only one in the whole apartment, I'm afraid. So we'll have to share this one, as well as the bedroom. If you're not comfortable sharing a bed with me, I can take the sofa if you like. And This is obviously the living room.”
They walked into a very large spacious kitchen that also had a dining table to eat at. “This is the kitchen and dining room. The fridge's stocked with many kinds of food, so we won't run low on things to eat.”
Soon as Mikami saw how large the apartment was, it bothered him on some level.
“I don't get it... This apartment looks extremely expensive to own. Hell, it's even big as a house! Most apartments in Japan isn't this large. I can't see the police blowing their budget like this to detain some suspects like this at all.” Mikami wondered, as he looked outside a window and saw that they were inside some tall building. They apparently were very high up, so he was guessing that they were maybe on the top floor and the roof was right over them.
Light nodded. “I know what you mean. That really bugged me too when they first put me into here! But I've come up with some explanations to as how they afforded this, and why they would do this for me. And now you too.”
“Oh? What are those theories of yours?” Mikami decided that he might as well as reach into the fridge and get out some soda while he was here. After all, he had been locked up in some sort of room blindfolded without hardly anything to eat or drink. So he was thirsty as hell.
As Mikami popped open his soda, Light then explained: “Well, you remember how I told you about the cameras in my house? I told my father about the cameras in the bedrooms when my sister first discovered them and ran to me about it. My father had one of our police friends scan the whole house for more cameras, and that's how we found out that there was that many cameras in my little sister's room as well as my parents' bedroom. My father tried to keep a level head, saying that the Anti-Kira task-force is investigating anybody who had been on the Kira case to ensure that there was no sympathizers with the organization who could feed information to Kira himself. And so thus they might had to go to any lengths to ensure that there was no traitors in our family. However, he was unable to explain why there was so many cameras in the rooms of our female family members when there was only one camera in any other rooms. So that's when I lost my temper and decided to confront the team directly. So I imagine that my father must had threatened to make this incident public once he learned that I was being detained as an Kira suspect. After all, as you said, it's illegal in Japan to put hidden cameras into peoples' home without their consent.”
Mikami sipped his soda thoughtfully. He then asked. “So.... you think they're just giving you the VIP treatment just to placate your father and stop him from making it public? Do you honestly think that would keep him quiet, even if he was that sort of person to start with?”
Light sighed. “you're right, that does sound unlikely... but that was the only thing I could think of. Besides the Anti-kira Taskforce having somebody rich back them up.”
Mikami then wondered whenever there wasn't really a third explanation for it-- Maybe L and his team knew that Light-sama was really the one true god out of all those false Kiras, and choose to treat him as such.... even if they intended to kill him once they found any evidence that Light-sama were exactly what they suspected him to be.
He couldn't help but mentally scoff at the thought. It would be just like foes of Kira to take on such hypocritical behavior! 'Sure, we're totally oppose everything your god stands for and we intend to kill him,' Mikami couldn't help but image the faceless anti-Kira team saying, 'But we'll still give him the luxuries that is worthy of an god. That makes everything we do okay in our minds!”
Mikami scowled deeply at this thought, not even realizing that he was doing it.
Light then walked out of the kitchen while calling over his shoulder: “I'm going to show you where the exit is. Not that it does us any good, though.... nothing can get though those chains, and I can't get them off no matter what.”
Mikami followed Light out of the kitchen, where he led him to a hallway with a door on the end of it. They could only get as far as halfway down the hall before the chain pulled back, completely taunt.
“This is far as the chain goes, I'm afraid. I think this door is the exit out of the apartment, but I'm not sure. But I've seen masked men come in and out of that door, when they brought me food and clothes.” Light explained.
------
“Oh man! Why did he have to paint us as compete perverts?? When Light said he came up with an cover story that wasn't what I had in mind...” Mastuda griped, not realizing that he was actually voicing what was going on in the other team members' heads. Ukita just slightly nodded at this, sighing softly.
That had hit home rather hard, considering that they were now in the middle of monitoring Misa's apartment and her parents' house too....some of the members had wondered aloud whenever they were getting too used to violating people's privacy like this.
L stirred his sugar-laden tea, and then remarked, “Well, I think it's a very good cover. If Light had gone with being Kira as his cover, there's the possibility that Mikami would had wanted to kill him. After all as we know the Kiras out there doesn't always get along with each other. By playing an vulnerable young man who were becoming disillusioned by the corrupt justice officers' actions out there, Mikami might think that Light was easy to manipulate, and therefore trust him more easier. Playing the part of an innocent victim also gains him sympathy points.”
L frowned slightly. There was something else about this that was bothering him though. He wished he had coached Light in how to pull this off more believably, because Light had gone too fast in offering his cover story to the suspect. Would anybody in real life honestly want to spill that much information to an compete stranger upon meeting each other? Even if they actually met once before.
Fortunately, Mikami seemed to believe Light. That too, for some reason bothered him as well. He knew that Light was naturally charismatic, and as a result he could gain the trust of people very easily. He had witnessed this firsthand himself. However, something about Mikami's total trust in Light seemed... well, off. A part of him couldn't help but whisper “Because Light might be Kira”, even though he had discounted the possibility of Light being a Kira suspect a long time ago. Plus, like he said, The Kiras out there apparently didn't get along, according to the Kira's homemade tape. Unless that was a ploy to throw L off his game.
Mikami just completely bugged him... in the way he constantly mocked the Kira team, and the way he had smirked up at that visible camera as if he figured out what was going on.
It was entirely possible that Mikami belonged to some sort of Kira Cult, and had acted on Kira's will as a willing puppet... but something about that story also felt off to him.
L mentally sighed. Looks like he would just sit here, watch what was going on, and wait.
-----------------------------
Light couldn't help but feel nervous. He had gone too fast in offering up his cover story, when he hadn't meant to. He had meant to act more scared, vulnerable, and angry about what was happening with him so that he would gain more sympathy. He had meant to have Mikami “work” by questioning Light, so that Mikami would feel like he was in control now. But for some reason being undercover had caused Light's adrenaline to hit the roof as soon as Mikami woke up. After all, Mikami was quite possibly a dangerous criminal, responsible for the death of many. Which was normal, he supposed.... now many could lose their composure while staring death in the face?
Mikami was acting cautiously, as he told Light that he wanted to be alone while he explored the apartment on his own. Light respected his wishes, and had returned to the kitchen to cook a meal for the two of them.
Light figured that Mikami might try to escape. He wasn't certainly going to stop that... because to do so otherwise would blow his cover. Plus, it was pretty difficult to escape anyway... so he figured that he'd cook up something to tempt Mikami into being more cooperative. He couldn't imagine that Mikami had gotten enough food, or anything that even tasted edible, while he had been.... “interrogated”.
~~~~~~~~~
Mikami didn't try to escape. He however, did attempt to test how strong the chains around his ankle was, and whenever it could be slipped off.
It turned out that the chains were amazingly strong for being so thin. And on top if it, the attached shackle around his ankle had no way of being slipped off, even when applied with “lubricant” which was soap and shampoo from the bathroom.
After a long time of trying to tamper with the cursed thing that held him prisoner here, he finally gave up. It didn't help that Ryuk was just standing there, staring at him and grinning like a fool as if he knew something Mikami didn't.
As much as he respected the god of death, that was getting on his nerves in a horrible way. He couldn't even tell Ryuk to cut it out, because there was cameras in the bathroom and they would have seen him talking to the thin air.
He smelled food being cooked in the kitchen, and his stomach growled so loudly that he was sure that Light-sama could have heard it all the way from the kitchen.
He followed the scent, and to his surprise he found his god standing in the kitchen wearing a white apron. His sleeves were rolled up too, as he was stirring something in a bowl.
There also was something frying in a pan.
The scene struck him as being a little surreal, because he couldn't have ever pictured his god being so... well, domestic. He had never really thought that his god would be willing to do something like the menial task of cooking.
“you don't seem like the type to cook.” the words were out of his mouth, and it took him a few seconds before he realized he had said that.
Light turned around, still stirring whatever contents was in the bowl.
“Yeah, I know. People are always surprised when they discover that I can cook.” Light replied, “However I tend to hold this philosophy that every young man should be able to take care of himself if he lives on his own or plans to become independent from his own family. That induces being able to eat properly and not just depend on take out and the few leftovers that his relatives bring by for him. It was for this reason why I choose to learn how to cook before I left for college.”
Mikami simply nodded, as seeing this did make sense. He had been the same way too, after all... he had learned how to cook when he had been in college himself not too long time ago. In fact he still used this skill even after he graduated college a year ago.
Light then sighed. “You know, I wish they would let me attend my college classes. They said they would bring over the exams and the like for me so that I wouldn't have my grades drop but that they couldn't let me go anywhere in public because of how I was a Kira suspect. It's so annoying, really. I wouldn't run away or anything like that.”
He then chuckled nervously. He then started rambling again, “There I go again, rambling about my problems! I don't know what's the matter with me.... it's as almost as if I've been isolated for so long, that I break down at the first sign of human contact! Don't mind me at all.... just sit down and enjoy the food. You can just ignore my rambling, okay? God, you must really find me so pathetic!”
With that, he went back to his cooking with a renewed fevour... as if he wanted to get past what he saw as an embarrassing incident.
Mikami sat down, watching Light's flustered face with curiosity. He then glanced at what Light was making... it turned out that it was stir-fry and rice.
In a few minutes the food was done, and the two sat down to eat.
Mikami had to admit that after so long in confined isolation and dry stale food, that the food tasted heavenly. Or maybe it was because Light-sama was such a excellent cook?
He couldn't help but feel a certain amount of glee at the thought that he was actually eating food that was actually created by his god's own hands. For this reason, he couldn't help but chew each bite slowly, savoring the taste. Who knows how long he would ever get to taste his god's cooking again?
He even closed his eyes, letting his senses be pleased by the taste alone.
When he opened his eyes, he found Light-sama staring at him with a curious expression on his face.
“what? I can't help it, It feels like I haven't had real food in so long!” Mikami said, a little defensively.
Light smiled. “It's nice to know my cooking's not that bad at all. I wasn't sure if it was going to be good. You know, I still can't believe you're here.”
“Eh?”
Light's expression became horribly sad. “I've been in here all alone for so long... I've actually lost track of time, since how they don't allow me to watch TV or read the news. And I have nobody to talk to. The only company I had before was when those guys brought me my food and my school work... and even then they only stayed for a few seconds.”
Light then let out a weak laugh. “I was just considering the possibility that you might be a hallucination that I cooked up when I became so starved for human contact.”
Mikami's insides twisted at hearing those words. He didn't certainly realize how hard it would be on Light, living all alone in a jail cell without human contact, even if the jail in question was a high-end luxury apartment.
Without thinking, he reached out and put his hand over light's hand. “Well, don't worry. I'm very much real. You're not going to be alone in here anymore.”
Light smiled at this. “yeah.”
