Chapter Ten

Disclaimer–I do not own Death note. If I did, the stories would be way more suggestive, if you know what I mean. ;)

Warnings– Starting to use a lot of the scenes from the Movies and some of the Anime now. If you haven’t watched the Death Note Movies, then be warned–-there’s some spoilers here even though I’ve tweaked the scenes some to fit the plot bunny I have in my head right now.

Oh. And there might be some cursing in this chapter now.

I also changed some small details, regarding the death notes.

I also may have to repeat that I don’t have a beta-reader… so some parts may be not as refined as I’d like it to be. Some parts might get a little erratic as I’m kind of fast-forwarding some parts of the storylines from The Movie, Anime and Manga. That aside, I hope that you will continue to enjoy the plot that I’m weaving now!
================================================

From the moment Light touched his death notebook, It all came rushing back to him in an jumbled mess.

Soon as he got his thoughts in order, everything suddenly seemed to make so much sense to him. The reason why he had felt slightly obsessed with L…and all those memory gaps which troubled him so… all his questions had been answered just simply by touching the Death note.

From what he could remember, he wasn’t Kira….but he was a death note user, that was for sure. He remembered the uncomfortable moment when he realized that the death note book was for real all too clearly. It had been some weeks after Kira had started killing, so Light couldn’t had been Kira. However… He admittedly had struggled over whenever Kira was honestly doing the right thing or not, but that had ended when Shiori got killed.

It was clear to him then that if Kira could kill innocents who had done no wrong, he then didn’t want to do anything with Kira. Even if those innocents had been standing in Kira’s way somehow, there was still no excuse for killing them! He had sworn right there and then that he’d do anything to find out who Kira was, and kill him. After all, such a dangerous maniac couldn’t be allowed with such a powerful tool of destruction.

And It would truly be poetic justice for a mass murderer like Kira to be killed off by a Death note, wouldn’t it?

And it was also the reason why he had been slightly obsessed with L for a while…It was because Light had seen him as not only an powerful ally, but also as a important tool to find out who Kira was. That’s why he had felt that almost everything L had ever said or done was so important. Even when he wasn’t a death note owner at the moment, on some subconscious level, he had been watching L for any clues on who the real Kira might had been.

Everything had been going so well too… but then Misa had to come along and screw things up!

Light mentally scowled at the memory. He had remembered feeling so ill as that horrible woman had practically bragged about killing all those cops and other people who had the courage to stand up for what they believed in. This seemingly cute girl was a fucking cop-killer!
All for what? Just so that she could meet somebody who she THOUGHT was Kira. Of course, it didn’t occur to the dumb whore that if a Death note could be dropped for her, that there could be other Shinigami dropping death notes out there for random people.

After all, not all death note users would be stupid enough to publicize everything they had done like she did. He had such a strong urge to just kill the disgusting little cunt right there and then, and even had hinted at that. Unfortunately, Rem had stopped any ideas short right there and then by threatening to kill Light should he mistreat or murder Misa in any way.

So there he was. Yagami Light, Japan’s #1 student and prodigy, forced to play the part of Misa’s boyfriend just because the disgusting little thing wanted to be Kira’s bride.
And the worse thing, he would probably be killed off by her if it was ever discovered that he had purposefully deceived her about being Kira just to keep her from meeting the real one.

Now that he had his memories back, he would have to focus on a way to get rid of both Rem and Misa for once. They were hindering his quest to find the real Kira, after all.

But for now… he would have to get rid of the disgusting scum called Higuchi. He distracted L by saying that they should check all the names of the victims to see if they matched up with Kira’s victims… and while L was flipping though the pages, Light did his wristwatch trick.

The longest 40 seconds of his life passed, and finally Higuchi was dead. All was well with the world…. Or at least it would be once he thought of a way to get rid of Misa (and Rem, of course).
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The thirteen day rule cleared both Light and Misa’ names, which disturbed him for some reason.
He knew that rule had to be fake… but for some reason he couldn’t remember making such a rule, or even asking Ryku to forge them for him. And if that was true… why didn’t he die? That was so weird. But then again, even though he remembered most of the important bits, some parts were still strange somehow. And then there was the fact that he also mysteriously knew a lot of new things about the Death note, such as the death eraser without Ryku even telling him. He guessed that it was because he probably didn’t get full ownership of the Death note and thus couldn’t access all of his memories regarding the death note.
Well, he would have to do something about that soon.

But for now, he was simply sitting there listening to L question Rem. In typical fashion, L had readied a whole barrage of questions for the Shinigami the moment they were back at headquarters.
Light would be lying if he said he didn’t feel any malicious pleasure in watching Rem squirm figuratively every time L asked all the right questions. Now she would understand everything he had to go though just to carry out Rem’s demands to save Misa back then.

Rem was obviously uncomfortable and unused to being interrogated in such an manner, but somehow she kept her cool simply just by replying to most questions with “I don’t know.” or something to that effect.

This in turn frustrated L. He was also annoyed that Light seemed to be doing nothing expect sit next to him listening to the situation at hand.

“Why are you just sitting around listening? It seems that you could do something more productive… ” L commented.

“Ryuuzaki, do I bother you? I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware.” Light had an mock hurt expression as he said that, and then he smiled, his eyes narrowing. “Besides… I was under the assumption that you needed me… ”

L chewed on his fingernail, as he gazed into Light’s eyes which he noticed had seemed to change back again to the way they were when they first met.

“No, you don’t bother me… and I suppose I do need you, as you said… ” With that, he averted his gaze.

Light’s father came into the room, with a troubled expression on his face. “I don’t get it… all the criminals started dying again after Higuchi died, according to all this new data! And I finally thought we had gotten somewhere…”

L in his typical fashion, pointed out that the killings started after Misa had been released.

Light nodded. “I can see why you would think so. However, she’s clear thanks to that 13-day rule, if you recall. The only way she could be guilty was if that 13-day rule was fake.”

Light then innocently looked up at Rem, and then asked mainly because he genuinely wanted to know: “Is there a possibility that the Death Note would allow for fake rules to be added by shinigami or a human?”

Rem stiffened. What the hell was Light doing?? At this rate Misa would be suspected… She managed to keep her voice steady as she replied: “I don’t know. I’ve never heard of anybody doing such things.”

L chewed on his thumb, staring down at the black notebook. Light smirked, guessing easily what he was thinking about. L was thinking that If it were possible to kill using a piece of the notebook, then it would be the missing piece, but the 13 day rule is the only one throwing off his theory against Light and Misa.

Light then choose to bring up something that he had thought about the past. “You know… I was just thinking. This whole thing with the Death Note, it would seem very farfetched to the average citizen and even the police! Even if Higuchi hadn’t died, how would we convict him? We would become the laughingstock of the world while he walked away free! ”

L answered this rather simply: “if we capture the killer, he would still be on the death penalty anyway, thanks to all the videotapes and the information we have collected so far. so it doesn’t really matter at this moment. ”

With that, he gazed down at his tray of panda cookies, and picked up one to bite into it.

Rem blinked, wondering what the hell was happening here. And then she realized… Light, that bastard! He wanted her to kill L and give up her own life to extend Misa’s life!
–––––––
Light had went to eat some lunch for everyone, and when he got back everyone was still working save for L, who appeared to be missing.

Upon asking the team where he went, he was told that L had gone up to the roof even though it appeared to be raining.

Light wondered what the hell L was doing. His curiosity got the best of him, and so he went up the steps that led to the roof.

“Ryuuzaki, what are you… ” Light’s question trailed off as he took in the scene before him.

L was simply looking upwards, rain pouring down his face, down his body. His cotton shirt had became transport and sticky against his body, although that wasn’t what caused Light to gape. It was the expression on L’s face.

He looked so peaceful, and yet at the same time so… sad.

Light mentally shook himself out of his stupor, and then called again. “Ryuuzaki, what the heck are you doing out here? You’ll catch a cold!”

L looked towards him, and then simply gestured like he couldn’t hear Light in the rain. He smiled, giving his face an almost goofy expression.

Light sighed, annoyed. He stomped out there into the rain, and got close enough so that L could hear him very clearly.

“Ryuuzaki, What are you doing out here? You’re going to catch a cold that way if you stay out here too long!” Light asked, rather irritably.

Without even giving L time to respond, He grabbed L’s arm and dragged him back into the building. Along the way, L muttered something about bells…

Light didn’t really listen, and went to get some towels out of the nearby storage closet by the steps.

“You know…I’ve never been close with anybody. I’ve been distant almost all of my life, and I’ve never really trusted anybody…” L said.

Light came back with the towels, and looked at L with an mildly curious expression. “Why the talk about relationships all of a sudden?”

L didn’t answer.

Light reached out to touch L’s hair with an towel, and started massaging his head dry. L’s eyes looked up with surprise at this unexpected contact.

“You know something? I think I’m the same way now. Some people have gotten hurt already, despite my efforts to protect them… In this situation, it just seems to be for the best if I become more like you. Sometimes I envy you, you seem to be able to control your feelings so well.” Light spoke casually, as he ran the towel though L’s hair.

L smiled bitterly. “One would think so… but right now, I’m sad… ”

“Huh?” Light shot him an questioning look, pulling the towel off L’s head.

L just simply nodded. “You’ll understand soon.”

With that, he went back to the headquarters.

Light just shook his head in confusion and followed him.

Back at headquarters, it appeared as if the guys were about ready to leave for elsewhere. They were packing up some documents, stuffing them into briefcases, etc…

Even Mr. Yagami had a silver briefcase which seemed to be chained to his wrist.

“ What’s going on? ” Light wondered aloud, looking around at this unexpected activity.

“ Light-kun…I apologize for not telling you earlier, but plans were made while you were out to lunch. ” L answered.

Mr. Yagami turned to face his son, an serious look on his face. “I’m taking the death note to Washington. ”

“W..what? ” Light blinked, not sure if he heard that right.

“You see… I made plans for that 13-day rule to be tested using two criminals. The Americans has allowed for us to use two of their criminals who is currently serving on death row. So Yagami-san here is going to take the death note there. Mogi and Ukita is going to escort him there. ” L explained.

Matsuda then spoke. “And I’m going out to the police station to give them the data we gathered on the Youtsa group. Even though the worst criminal out of the lot was caught, I think the police should keep a eye on that group…don’t you think so?”

With that Matsuda left.

Light felt uneasy about his death note going so far away to America. What would happen if he wasn’t able to access his own death note?

“I see. Father, can’t I go with you?” Light asked almost all too hopefully.

Mr. Yagami smiled sadly. “I’m sorry. But at least you get to stay here with L and continue to work on the case.”

So much for that…

“I see. I understand. Well, good luck… ” Light gave him one of his pseudo-smiles.

With that, the trio left… leaving Light alone with L.

“I have something important to tell you. ” L said as soon as he was certain that the two was completely alone.

Light looked at him curiously. “What is it?”

“Watari is bringing Misa over here for me, ” L told Light, ”I’ll prove that she’s the second Kira. I will sacrifice myself, and if I die that will prove that the 13-day rule is false. They’re on their way here as we speak.”

With that, He indicated the TV screens which showed Misa and Watari already on their way up.

Light shook his head. “What? Don’t tell me we have to go though this all over again… didn’t you say once that if you die, I die too? What good will it do if you’re right? Nobody’s here to see this at all! ”

L smiled. “ Ah, but you forget… Misa loves you. So I’m 99% sure that she will not kill you. So you have nothing to worry about. ”

Light scoffed, and muttered under his breath: “ Yeah, right. ”

Rem stared at one of the TV screens in horror. Misa’s life was halved again. Meaning that Misa had yet again made the eye deal. Light had tricked her!

“BASTARD!!” She hissed loudly in anger, as she walked though the wall into the room where they had held misa once. She took out her death note, and started writing.

There. She was already starting to crumble. She hoped this would restore Misa’s lifespan back to the way it had originally been… She also hoped that Misa would lead a good life now.

In the headquarters, L started to fall the floor in a rather dramatic fashion and were surprised as Light caught him.

But he was even more surprised when he looked up to see the expression on Light’s face. He had expected there to be some sort of victorious or smug expression… but instead, Light looked pale and worried.

Light was whispering something, as he held L tightly against his own chest. L only managed to catch the last part–-“ You can’t go yet…I need you right now… ”

L had honestly never been held like this before in his whole life. This was actually nice… And the way Light seemed so upset over his death, did that mean…?

L closed his eyes, his body slumping as life left his body.

Light was slightly trembling now, but it wasn’t from sadness. He laid L on the floor rather carefully, and got up.

It was then Misa choose that moment to come in.

“Oh my god, did you see? Watari just collapsed in the elevator! What happened??” Misa shrieked.

A slow grin grew it way across Light’s face. “Your Shinigami killed both L and Watari for you… that’s what happened. ”

Misa blinked. She mulled this information over, and then exicedtly asked: “ Does that mean that we win? We get to be together like a normal couple at last? ”

Light’s grin faded, and instead was replaced with a rather evil glare. “Oh, Misa… Is that honestly all you can think about? You make me sick. ”

Misa gave him a wounded expression. “ Huh? But you said that… ”

Light cut in, yelling: ” I know what I said! Give me your death note. ”

Misa whimpered, but came over to him to give him the note regardless.

Light started grinning again soon as he got the death note in his possession. He quickly opened the death note, and pulled out an pen at the same time.

With that, he writes down: “Amane Misa blurts out everything she knows of Kira, and then dies a painful death.”
Misa peeked over Light’s shoulder and gasped when she saw her own name there. “ Light!! What are you doing?! ”

Light turned around to look at Misa with the most evil smile that she had ever seen. In fact it made Light’s face look nearly demonic…

“I guess at this point, it’s only fair to tell you the truth. You see…I was never Kira. I only led you to believe this, because I was hoping to use you to find the real Kira… ”

“What…? ” Misa stared at Light in shock. “…B-but.. That can’t be?! Your lifespan couldn’t be shown to me when I saw you that day at Sakura TV… you had to be a death note user then… that means you’re Kira!! ”

Light started chuckling. “ Ah, it never occurred to you that if a death note was dropped for you… that could also mean that other Shinigami could drop death notes for others like me..? ”

“ I…No, I didn’t.. ” Misa stammered.

“Yet you were so blind in your worship of kira, that you were willing to kill innocent people and cops in a poor attempt to meet somebody who MIGHT be kira. And to make it worse, you had the nerve to have Rem threaten to kill me if I didn’t keep you at my side like you wanted! To be honest, That is Why I can never love scum Like you… ”

“ I… all I knew… ” Misa started quivering, tears running down her face. “ Was that Kira saved me that one time… and also avenged my family. I would had done anything to meet him… I thought I was the only other one with a death note… I really thought it was you who was Kira… I wanted to be at your side so badly.”

With that, she started clutching her chest, falling to the ground.

Light bent over to look at Misa’s tortured expression, and got in one final verbal jab: “I’ll be sure to give the real kira your regards once I find him…and kill him.”

Misa let out a small whimper, before finally dying.

Light started laughing manically. Finally he was free of that bitch!

Ryku appeared at his side, chortling. “Oh boy… that was cruel of you…”

“It’s what she deserves for thinking she could blackmail me into becoming her boyfriend.” Light said, once he calmed down.

He then turned around to face Ryku, and smiled. “But at any rate, it’s good to see you again, Ryku. I have something to ask you.”

“What is it?” Ryku simply asked.

“Do you have a death eraser with you? I need it right now to save L’s life.” Light asked.
Ryku let out a yelp of surprise. “whuh? How do you know about the Death Eraser?”

Light couldn’t help but smirk at Ryku’s reaction. “So, it really did exist… I wasn’t sure. Anyway, you have it?”

Ryku nodded, and reached into the pouch which held his book and pulled out an eraser which seemed like an normal one save for the fact that it had a black band around it, and had an image of a skull on it.

As Light took it, Ryku asked: “You know, you still haven’t answered my question.”

Light looked up at the Shinigami, and shook his head. “ I don’t know. For some reason, I knew things I never knew before when my memories returned to me… But enough of this, I got to go pick up Rem’s Death note! ”

Ryku pondered over this new interesting information. He wondered if he had accidentally transferred some of his knowledge over to Light when he altered his memory just as Kiraomi had asked him to…

“NO!! This can’t be… ” Light cried out from the other room, and Ryku went to see what was the matter.

Light looked up at Ryku in dismay. “Rem…she burned her own death note when she died… ”

Ryku chuckled. “Well, what did you expect? A death note is a shinigami’s life, so to speak. So if something was to happen to it, A shinigami would eventually die. In the same vein, an death note cannot exist without a Shinigami… ”

Light sighed, and then sat down on the floor. He covered his face with his hands as he muttered: “Oh, that’s just fucking great. Shit… L was so useful to me. My search for kira is going to slow down again. And on top of it, with everyone in the whole building dead, I’m going to have a difficult time explaining this to the others when they get back… I’ll probably be suspected as Kira again, and he’ll just keep on killing.”

Ryku nodded. “Yes, you’re probably right.”

Light looked up, as sudden inspiration hit him. “ Wait. Maybe I can still talk my way of this… ”

With that, he got up and rushed back into the main headquarter office.

Curious, Ryku just simply followed him.

Light quickly picked up his cellphone, took a deep breath, and then started doing his best hysterical act as he called his father.

“D-dad!! You’ve got to come back quickly, please! Misa…she…killed L! She killed Watari too… L was right, She was really the second kira! She tried to make me join her, but I…. ” Light took in a deep breath after all that fast talking. He then finished his sentence. “ killed her. Just come quickly please…”

He then shut off his cellphone, and was instantly calm again.

Ryku laughed. “Aw Light. I almost believed you were distraught for a second there… ”

Light didn’t smile at the comment. He walked over to the corpse that was once L, and then bent down to touch the silky black hair. He started stroking it as he thought aloud, “I wonder if maybe I should had came clean about being an death note owner. I’m nothing like Kira, even if I’ve killed. Maybe they would understand my reasons…”

Ryku didn’t say anything at this, and just watched as Light did his best to pick up L’s body.

Light carried the body over to the sofa in the room, and dropped it there. Light was struck by how unnatural L looked when his body was stretched out like that instead of in his usual slouching position.

“What am I going to do without him now that he’s dead? ” Light asked, sighing.

Ryku glanced at the body, and then started laughing again.

“ What’s so funny? ” Light snapped.

“ Oh, I suppose you’ll find out yourself soon anyway… ” Ryku chortled.
––––––––––––
A while later, Mr. Yagami arrived at the building to a very distraught-looking Light.

They were on the first floor, in what one might call an reception room.

“I know this is going to be hard to believe… but just let me explain. Like I told you on the phone, Misa and her Shinigami killed everyone but me… ” Light started his carefully crafted lie, but his father stopped him.

“I know, because I saw everything. ” Mr. Yagami said, as he stared at his son who he wasn’t sure he knew anymore.

“Huh?” Light looked at his father questioningly, and to his surprise Matsuda and everyone else stepped into the lobby room…

Last of all was L, who was alive somehow.

ALIVE…even though he had been killed by Rem.
=====================================
If you’re confused about Light’s memory of events, go back to reread the parts where Light had let himself be imprisoned by L, and where The white Death note book has a little chat with Ryku about how to alter Light’s memories.

And if you’re wondering about that whole “ Death eraser ” thing… I did not make that up! Death Note Pilot (CHAPTER 00), which was actually a one-shot story created by the same creators of death note, had those two kids who gained death notes somehow, and in it they were able to use something called the Death Eraser to bring back the people they had killed, provided that the body wasn’t destroyed in some way.
