Chapter 12: Thank You
~!~!~!~!~!~
For the first time since Light had been raped, he slept without sedatives and managed to wake up without a panic attack. He was... warm, comfortable. Safe. It was the first time he'd felt that way since discovering the true power of the Death Note. Slowly, sleep faded from his mind like fog being subdued by sunlight. He rubbed his eyes, groaned softly as he blinked them open.
He didn't recognize the room right away, but it didn't alarm him, and soon he was slowly pushing himself into a sitting position. When his gaze fell onto the still sleeping Ryuzaki, he felt a sad smile rise on his lips. Slowly, trying not to disturb the other, he rose from the couch.
"Nnnh," Ryuzaki shifted, but didn't wake.
Light left his blanket on the couch and went to the kitchen.
Ryuzaki sniffed softly, pressing his face into the sofa. Something smelled wonderful. Sweet, tasty... He opened his eyes slowly, sitting up and looking around with a wide yawn.
"Breakfast isn't quite ready. If you want to freshen up, first..." Light said from the kitchen.
Ryuzaki blinked at Light, raising an eyebrow. He said nothing, going into his room and brushing his teeth, changing again. When he returned, Light was putting food out on the table. Bacon and waffles, with syrup and butter on the side. Things that could be made in a microwave or toaster oven.
Light sat down in front of his own plate, poured a bit of syrup on the waffle and started to eat.
"Yagami-kun..." Ryuzaki said softly, frowning a little. Light was acting far too normal, for what had happened the night before.
"I know, but can't we have a quiet breakfast first?" he sighed. "I didn't have any nightmares last night."
"That's good, Yagami-kun. I suppose it can wait until after breakfast," he agreed, a bit relieved. He was quite pleased to see that his waffle had been sprinkled with powdered sugar. He drowned it in syrup, anyway.
"Thank you," Light sighed softly, eating his breakfast in silence. When they were done, he took the dishes back to the kitchen and reluctantly returned to face Ryuzaki. He was on the sofa again, so Light joined him there with a weak sigh, closing his eyes.
Ryuzaki was silent, deciding that it was, perhaps, simply better to let Light speak when he was ready, about whatever he needed to speak of.
The silence stood for nearly a half hour, before the first words spilled from Light's lips. First, a description of the rape, of how he had been pulled aside by his shirt, thrown into the side of a dumpster, fell to the ground. How he had been hit, time and time again, until he was too weak to struggle free. How he was held down, his pants ripped straight off, button torn away, zipper busted.
He spoke about the pain, the burning, the aching. He told Ryuzaki how he threw up, how he got to his feet, tried to make himself look presentable. Walked back without allowing himself to limp. Then, finally, Light told him how he felt. How the whole thing had seemed to shred his soul, leaving him an empty husk. How he feared living on with that kind of pain inside him and why he had confessed.
Then he went into the execution, and, ever so quietly, he told L exactly how he had felt, when he had thought the drugs were killing him. The intense grief, the remorse that had consumed him in those last seconds before everything faded to black. Only then did he meet Ryuzaki's eyes.
"Thank you," he whispered intensely. He looked away as the tears rose, wiped them away quietly. "You showed me... exactly why what I was doing was wrong. I felt as if I finally understood you. When I woke up, I was furious and happy and sad, all at the same time," and he told Ryuzaki how the nightmares and panic attacks felt.
Finally, he looked at the scar on his arm, and spoke slowly about the 'temper tantrum' that had ended with the injury.
"And... what of last night, Yagami-kun?" Ryuzaki ventured tentatively.
Light's gaze lifted to Ryuzaki's once more, a crooked smile on his lips. "Last night... I realized what a good friend you are, and how grateful I am that you are the one who is helping me through this. I've never had that before. Not with anyone that I felt any sort of connection with, anyway," he admitted.
A strange heat rose in Ryuzaki's face. "That makes me happy, Yagami-kun."
"Me, too," Light agreed, then got up and made some tea. He felt a whole lot better, even if he was worn out again.

A/N: And so, we have the spillage of emotionalness in word form.
FrozenWishes: Ahah! I've heard of BAWLS, though I haven't tried it. I don't much fancy those Energy drinks. I do live Stateside, though. For now. I want to get into the JET program after I get out of college. And I look forward to reviews as much as you look forward to my replies. XD I've got myself some good old Mt. Dew, myself. Code Red at the moment. (Baja is really good, but only available at Taco Bell. Talk about weird.) I am, however, stuck in the South right now. I miss Iowa so much! I can't wait for University to start up again, even if it sucks up all my time.
