Chapter Twelve

Warnings– None for this chapter. It’s basically an straight forward chapter.

I may have to repeat that I don’t have a beta-reader… so some parts may be not as refined as I’d like it to be. Some parts might get a little erratic as I’m kind of fast-forwarding some parts of the storylines from The Movie, Anime and Manga. That aside, I hope that you will continue to enjoy the plot that I’m weaving now!
===================================================

Light tried not to show too much of his emotions to the cameras watching as he was waiting in his bedroom. So many possible outcomes for his fate was going though his head, and most of them weren’t exactly pleasant.

He had to hold himself from jumping out of his skin when the phone rang. He picked it up and spoke into it. “Yes? ”

L’s voice came from the other end. “Come back, we’ve reached an decision.”

So he internally calmed himself, so that he would look cool and collected when he walked back into that room. It wouldn’t do for him to look so pathetic after all… whenever he was meeting a bad end or not.

He tried not to think too hard as he walked the path towards the main headquarters office, where they were waiting for him.

He continued to do his best to keep his mind blank as he sat down in front of the team. He then gave each one of them one of his famous pseudo-smiles as he asked: “ So. What did you guys decide on what to do with me? ”

“ To put it simply… we decided to keep you on the team. We all decided that your experience and your insights were too valuable to waste.” L spoke.

Out of all things, this was not what he expected. He had expected to be cooped up in that little cell and only occasionally helping them out should they need some new information. Or in the worst case, he’d be executed without even being given a chance to see at least Kira’s face and name so that he could kill him.

“ What? Just like that? Even though you know I’ve been an death note owner for a while? Even though I killed? ” Light asked, trying to keep the surprise out of his voice and failing miserably.

“There will be restrictions, of course. ” Mogi spoke. “Any contact with your death note will not be permitted at any point. And there’s also the fact that you will have to be confined to this building once again, so that every one of us can keep an eye on you. You will have to be escorted by one of us when you move around the building at all the times. L will be staying with you when you sleep. I expect that you’re used to that by now so I doubt you’ll object.”
Light processed this in his head.

Well, that wasn’t so bad. It seemed like he wasn’t being trusted completely, but he expected that anyway.

“What? No long-chained handcuffs this time, L?” He slightly joked, while keeping his face impassive.

“I would find them rather pointless now that your true nature has been revealed, Light. ” L replied, “And also you should keep in mind that none of what you have told us has actually been verified yet… there’s a 1.2% chance that you are Kira, and just has simply put on a clever performance for the cameras because killing both me and Misa would had looked suspicious, and even more if they found the tapes in this building to be destroyed. ”

Light tried his best not to show his irritation at that.

“ What’s more, ” L continued, “ You should be aware that if you try to escape or be seen trying to kill any of us… you will be shot upon sight.”

Ryku laughed at this. “Aw, poor Light. You can’t seem to catch a break, can you? Lady luck must really hate you. How are you going to kill Kira like this?”

Everyone turned their heads to stare at the Reaper.

Light got up, and then walked towards L so that he was in front of L.

“I’m fine with that for now. And I suppose you’ll also be wanting my Death Eraser now too? After all, you can’t exactly catch Kira now if you’re going to die in 29 days… can you? ”

L rubbed his lips with his thumb, thinking about whenever he could catch somebody in that time span. He then looked up at Light. “ Yes, you’re right… I don’t know if I can. ”
With that he lifted an outstretched hand as to wait for the death eraser to be put into his hand.

Light placed it there, and then he simply remarked: “Be sure to read the rules of the Death eraser first before you do anything hasty. It’s got some rules that are surprisingly more restrictive than the Death Note itself.”

L then looked at the Death eraser. It looked to be a simple white eraser, save for the black band around it and the fact that it was almost big as a human’s hand. The size almost seemed ridiculous but in context it made sense if it was originally meant for Shinigami, who seemed to be somewhat bigger than a human.
One side had an skull-shaped symbol on it, and the other side was full of tiny, written text on the black band. The text was almost too small to make out if you held it in your hands normally, but it was readable anyway if you looked closely at eyeball level.

The rules read as such:

+ This death eraser can be used to bring humans whose name has been written in the death note. (Trying to use this on names that are written in any notebook other than a death note will not do anything).

+ The death eraser can only work if the body of the human has not been damaged by severe decay or cremation. Using this should be done by at least five months’ time. Any longer than that and this eraser cannot guarantee results. Following this rule, the decreased will seem as if they never died in the first place.

+In an situation where somebody’s name is written in two death notes, this Death Eraser will only work on the Death note which had the name written in first. If the death note which had the person’s name written down first is destroyed before you erased the name, then that person cannot be brought back to life.

+For every life brought back, the human must sacrifice two years of his or her life to the Shinigami whom the death note belongs to. This is to prevent overuse of the Death Eraser.

+To prevent the discovery and abuse of Death Erasers, A human who isn’t a death note owner cannot use this Eraser, even if they have touched the Death Note or have used the Death note. So a Death Note owner may only use this.

“Interesting… so you’re the only one who can erase my name off your death note.” L remarked, finding all the small snippets of information on the death eraser very interesting.

Light nodded. “Yes. That’s right. So that means if you want to live at least a little longer, you’re going to have to allow me to hold the Death Note, so that I can erase your name.”

L’s eyes widened slightly. “You would give up two years of your life for me?”

Light smirked down at the squatting figure on the chair. “You don’t have to make it sound so emotional, L. I could easily give up a couple of measly years… Especially for somebody who has been so useful to me. I told you before… I’d do anything if it meant giving me the chance to capture Kira. And to put it simply… keeping you alive helps me in that goal.”

L nodded. That did make sense in a way. He then called for Matsuda to hand over the death note to Light, and of course both Mogi and Ukita took out their guns should Light do anything improper with it.

Soichiro Yagami almost protested at the idea of his son sacrificing that amount of his life, even if it was for somebody like L. But then the conflicting forces in him silenced the voice in his throat. So instead he just watched with wide eyes as his son took the death note.

Light looked though the pages, until he finally got to the last written page before all the blank ones. And his eyes read: “L LAWLIET”.

He took a second to fully absorb that name into his memory. After all this time… he finally knew this strange man’s name! That name kept on echoing in his head over and over, as if his inner voice was a giddy schoolgirl obsessed with her crush.

On the surface, he didn’t change his expression, though, and started erasing the name as if nothing happened.

Matsuda watched over Light’s shoulder with slight awe as Light erased everything, even the date and time that L had written down.

With that, he handed the death note back over to Matsuda.

Everyone wasn’t sure what to do after all that was said and done, But L seemed to have no problems moving on with the next thing as nothing happened. He started quizzing Ryku like he had done with Rem…

And even though Ryku was actually more talkative than Rem, he still didn’t talk about anything too important. He did tell L something interesting though.

He had said that it was against the laws of the Shinigami world for a reaper such as himself to willingly help out humans. After all, Rem had died because she had written in her own death note to save the life of an human.
So in the same vein, a reaper would also die if he/she/it used the death eraser to bring back the human… if the said reaper had an attachment to the said human. But then on the other hand, A reaper who had no real attraction when it brought back a human would not die, provided that the reaper was truly only acting for it’s own best interests rather than for the sake of a human. However it was very unlikely that such a situation would raise. And on top of that, the line between saving the life of a human and merely acting for one’s own selfish motives were very thin, so it wasn’t generally recommended for a shinigami.

In addition to that, Reapers lived off the remaining lifespans of humans that they had killed. So by using the Death Eraser, Reapers ran the risk of dying if they erased the name of a human who had a long lifespan. To use it, they would have to be extremely careful to keep their lifespans so long that erasing one human’s name wouldn’t really affect them too much.

So as an result, Reapers actually didn’t use the erasers that much at all. It was almost virtually unused in the Shinigami world.

After telling them this information, he of course had demanded for some apples to be given to him in return as an reward.

It was then L decided that they should retire for the night, as it was getting very late… not to mention that he would need some time to process the events that transpired.

So with that, everyone went to their assigned bedrooms for the night. Save for Soichiro Yagami, who offered to monitor everything on the screen for the night as seeing he felt like he couldn’t sleep. He too, had a lot to process.
–––––
Light was getting ready for bed as L simply poured a bag of sugar into his mouth.

He needed the sugar rush to process all this new information, after all.

He was disappointed that Light-kun wasn’t Kira. After all, his instincts had been screaming that he was Kira… and now that Light had confessed to being an Death Note user but NOT to being Kira, his instincts were telling him that was correct. It was just…unsettling. He wondered if that was because his personal feelings were getting in the way, no matter how he did his best to stay neutral in this whole situation.

Ah, yes. His feelings. As much as he liked to think that he was completely unaffected by such unreasonable emotions, he was still human. As such, he wasn’t…perfect. He had been able to keep those feelings under control successfully for a long time, but for some reason they felt stronger than normal. Especially after Light-kun had held him so closely to his chest as if L was something beloved to him, when he thought that L was dying. Also something else that troubled him somewhat.

If Light was really Kira, why would he do something like that? And then there was that moment afterwards when he had seen the video feedback of the room that Rem had died in. Light had seemed so upset that Rem had burned her death note when she died. Talking about how L couldn’t be brought back…

L drifted out of his thoughts as he felt slight movement on the bed. He turned his head to see Light in his pajamas, getting into the bed.
He then took this chance to speak.

“Light-kun, before you go to sleep. There’s some things I wanted to personally ask you about. Things that may or might not be relevant to the case at hand.”

Light couldn’t help but put on one of his pseudo-smiles. “I figured that you wanted to ask me some things that you couldn’t ask in front of the others. So go ahead, ask away.”

“Light-kun… Why were you so upset when you thought I died? I was under the impression that you didn’t like me that much.”

He felt his false smile fade. That wasn’t one of the questions that he had expected at all… He had expected it to be something about Kira, or something close.

“You should realize that you’re a very difficult person to like, after all. Even when I did my best to be your friend, I was treated like a enemy. Anybody wouldn’t want to act the part of a friend after that. At any rate… I was only upset because I thought I had lost something that had been so useful to me. That’s all.” Light replied.

L at this point had turned around completely on his knees to face Light. His dark eyes seemed to be staring deeply into Light’s very soul, as if he didn’t quite believe what he heard.

“But if that was true, why did you act like you lost something close and dear to you rather than losing something useful? You even took the trouble to lay me out on the sofa so that I wouldn’t be left on the floor. That tells me that you do care for me to some degree, at least…”

Light couldn’t help but start to feel a little bit annoyed by this. What the hell was Lawliet trying to get at here with this line of questioning?

“ Just spit it out already! What the hell are you trying to ask me? ” Light snapped.

L then moved even closer to Light, so that he was too close for Light’s tastes. His dark eyes bored right into Light’s, as he asked:

“I guess what I’m trying to ask you. How do you feel about me, Light-kun? Besides the fact that I’m… ’useful’?”

Light’s eyes widened slightly. Was L really asking him if he had feelings for the detective?

Suddenly, everything seemed to make sense, as things clicked into place within his head. The strange things he had said on the roof, all that about how L wasn’t good with relationships, etc. How he said that he was sad, and that Light would understand in time…

Without realizing it, a smile appeared on his face. Not one of his trademark pseudo-smiles, but one of his rare genuine ones.

L Lawliet was openly displaying the fact that he had feelings for Light Yagami. He wasn’t sure what kind of feelings exactly, but it was genuine, human feelings all the same…

Which meant that L was human after all… and that thought strangely thrilled him. Light supposed that it was because this meant that L could be manipulated to a certain degree. He would have to be careful about how he went about it though… L wasn’t stupid.

L watched with interest as the change in Light’s expressions took place. At first, his eyes had widened, and seemed to have some unidentified emotion swimming though them. It almost seemed like Light had somehow reverted to his old self when he was “ innocent ”. Then he smiled, and L could tell this smile was real for once.
He thought it looked so much better on Light’s face than one of his usual fake smiles, as it lit up his face rather well.
But then as suddenly as this side of Light appeared, it quickly disappeared. Light’s eyes returned to their normal, hard stoic state that L was used to seeing. And the smile had disappeared.

Light suddenly embraced L, much to L’s surprise. Light’s breath felt hot on L’s neck, as he spoke. “You should know by now that I’m not the type to display my feelings so openly. You also know that I’m the type to think my answers out very carefully rather than just spewing out what I think and feel in a careless manner. So… I think you’ll understand why I won’t answer that question in the way you want.”

L returned the embrace slowly and hesitant. “ I don’t mind, Light-kun.”
He smiled slightly anyway, because this was the second time that he was embraced like this.“ I suppose that’s your answer, then.”

“Yes. ” Light simply said, as he let go of L. “So… I want to know. What kind of name is L, anyway?”

L stopped smiling, returning to his usual morose neutral expression as he let go of Light.

“Some hospitals have this thing you might call it a tradition. I was supposed to be born as an stillborn according to the doctor on duty. So they simply took one letter of my mother’s first name, and her last name. They do that with all the stillborns for the records. It was to the surprise of everyone there that I was born very much alive.”

Light absorbed this bit of interesting information. “And your mother or father never bothered to change it to something more suitable…? Somehow that doesn’t seem right… ”

It was then he noticed that L had stiffened slightly when he had mentioned his parents.

Interesting… so this detective wasn’t on good terms with his parents? And that thing about him being supposed to be stillborn–-maybe that meant that his mother had been in critical condition, or something that was wrong with the pregnancy…? He would have to ask that for another time, since right now that was trivial even if it was interesting.

L didn’t respond and just sat there hunched over in silence. and so Light replied: “ I’m sorry if I pressed too far. I know I’m not supposed to know anything about your past in the first place. In fact it’s quite amazing that you actually answered that question. ”

L simply nodded as he said: “That’s correct. And the information I just gave you won’t be able to lead you to any more clues about my past, whenever it be online or in the records out there. As seeing my records at the hospital was destroyed a long time ago.”

Light smirked. “ I got my question answered anyway, so that’s enough for me. Good night… Lawliet.”

L looked at Light, and nodded curtly. “Good night…Light.”

With that Light laid down to go to bed, and turned off the lights.

His back was turned towards L, and he could feel the ebony eyes gazing at him in the darkness. There was a faint light that appeared, and there was the sound of a keyboard clacking.

Figures… nothing seemed to change at all… L was on his laptop again, just as he had always done before when they had been chained together.

He couldn’t help but mentally smirk at that, even if it was one of the more annoying habits that he hated.

He wondered if he should answer Lawliet’s earlier question, and try to get closer to him. But then again, he might risk coming across as too corny, and getting Lawliet even more suspicious of him. But then on the other hand, they were already suspicious of him to start with… it couldn’t hurt.

“I’ll say this though. You do keep my life interesting. Before…I was so bored with my life. I wasn’t honestly happy with anything in my life, as seeing there was nothing to challenge me. And I couldn’t imagine going back to the things were before I met you. In fact… I don’t think I could.” Light spoke.

With that, he shut his eyes and slept.

L found himself speechless, As he started at his laptop. The Laptop had video screens running on it, with one of them focused on Light’s now sleeping face.

He knew that Light wouldn’t openly admit such things without a reason. A part of him was suspicious… but… a larger part of him was happy to hear that.
Yes. There was really something wrong with himself, but for some reason he just didn’t care right now.

For the first time in their time together, he actually shifted himself so that he was halfway lying next to Light. He closed his laptop, and then simply let the thousands of thoughts in his head drown out the silence in the room. For some reason he didn’t just feel like staying in his normal posture, even if it meant that his reasoning ability would be lowered.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

––-Around Two days before Misa’s death, and Light’s “confession”.–-

Kiraomi wasn’t pleased with Misa at all.

Misa had shown such supposed devotion to “Kira” from the start so He thought that Misa would become a great host body.
That was why he had gone to the trouble to make Light put his “body”, the white death note, into the container along with Misa’s Death Note. So that Misa would become the owner, while Light would completely forget that there had been a special White death note to start with.

After all, Somebody who would blindly follow his every command, and worshiped him as everyone should. He was after all, an god.

The perfect host… But there was too many flaws with Misa as an host, much to his dispointment. Having Rem on his side would had been useful too, after all.
Misa had a unhealthy obsession with Light, and were so adamant in her notion that Light was in fact, Kira. She could only see Light as perfect, and especially was everything she wanted in “Kira”. which annoyed Kiraomi to no end. Light was not perfect! Yagami was only a mere human, after all. And Light couldn’t be god, only HE could be!

When He had subtly whispered into her innermost being that she should kill light to tie up any loose ends, she had mentally slammed him so hard and actually pushed him out of her head! Misa sure had strong mental strength, it was just too bad that was wasted most of the time. He then had to stay in his “ paper prison ” that was the death note for a while until he recovered.

And while he recovered, He went over “Plan B”. The second plan that he had prepared in the event that Misa wouldn’t work out. He had already a new targeted host, chosen from the time when he had borrowed Light’s body (while he was asleep). He had used Light’s knowledge and his own reserech to create a list of people who could be a great “Kira” before having Light choose to “ give up ” the death note.

And there was only a few that appeared, to be honest He didn’t think the majority of them would make a good host… all with the exception of one.

And his name was Mikami Teru.

Early in the morning, Kiraomi quickly took a hold of Misa’s body before she woke up.

For some reason, it was easier to suppress their conscious thoughts and control the body if the humans in question was asleep. He just wished that it didn’t take so much energy and effort. If he didn’t conserve his energy for when he really needed it, his control would be completely lost on any human he choose to possess. And he needed an human who would be easily controlled… Otherwise he would had never left Light in the first place.

He had Misa dress like normal, and then put his white death note into her purse, and walked out the door. Ryku followed as usual, curious to see what “Kira” was up to.

Misa walked down towards the area where Mikami was said to work in an rather robotic fashion, her eyes completely clouded over. However, nobody seemed to pay her any attention at all.

Nobody gave any thought to Misa asking for Mikami Teru at the law office, as they simply thought that she was there to request him for some case, even if Mikami was still very much new to the “world of lawyers”. The interns gave her the directions up to Mikami’s office, and she thanked them politely.

Mikami gave her an curious glance as she walked into his cramped, small office. Unlike the interns downstairs, he knew there was something strange going on even though he couldn’t figure it out.

Misa closed the door behind her, and then sat down without so much a single word, which made Mikami even more curious as to see why she was here. The vacant expression on her face didn’t seem normal, that was for sure.

“So… How can I help you, Miss?” Mikami asked politely, while staring at the woman before him. She seemed oddly familiar to him for some reason… he knew he had seen her somewhere but he couldn’t remember for some reason.

“I am here on behalf of Kira.” The voice coming out of her mouth sounded faraway, and oddly distorted.

Well, that sure caught Mikami’s full attention. He had been to plenty of events where there was more than a dozen Kira supporters, both on TV and at other places. He had met all kinds, but this was the first time he had heard anybody calming to speak for Kira. He couldn’t help but lean forward in his seat. “Oh?”

“What would you say if I told you that you have been chosen to be the next Kira? Are you willing to become Kira?” Misa asked.

Mikami’s eyebrows practically shot upwards off his forehead at this question. Him, become god? That was so utterly preposterous… yet, a very large part of him couldn’t help but be thrilled at the concept. After all, who wouldn’t want to be a part of something where one could punish all the evils of the world? All the scum of this world truly deserved to die… this was why he supported Kira. To him, Kira was truly god.

Mikami let out a loud laugh. “I see. I think I must have seen you at one of those Kira events. Am I right? Don’t you think you’re going too far? ”

Misa didn’t crack a smile at all. She spoke in that same vacant tone, “I didn’t expect that you would believe me right away. So I brought you a gift, one that would prove that you are chosen by Kira himself.”

With that, she pulled something out of her purse, and then held it out for Mikami to take.

Mikami looked down at the white notebook in her hands, and read the English words “Death Note ”.

A Notebook of Death? Well, this was a well-crafted prank, this was for sure…

He reached out to take it…and that’s when he suddenly saw it!

A gruesome looking monster behind the girl!

He couldn’t help but let out a scream, as he dropped the notebook and took a couple of steps back.

“ Hyuk, Hyuk. ” The monster was laughing.

Misa stood up, and then spoke. “The creature you see behind me, is a shinigami. As you know, they are the bringers of death, and that notebook I gave you… belongs to the world where they come from. With that, You can be Kira.”

As Misa explained everything, Mikami started to feel more calm with every word uttered.

He picked up the death note, holding it dearly as if it was some sacred object. “So with this…I can follow in my god’s footsteps… ”

He couldn’t help but start to grin widely. This was his dream come true!

He sat in his chair, trembling with excitement. “Kira…choose me for this…”

He looked up at the young girl quickly. ”Does this mean you’ve seen Kira personally? What is he like?“

Misa tilted her head. “The Kira you’re referring to… is no longer Kira. You are now the new body for Kira.”

“Wait… what does that mean?” Mikami couldn’t help but widen his eyes slightly at this weird statement.

“You are now the body which will carry out Kira’s will. If you start to hear a voice in your head, that is Kira’s voice and will which will guide you. You should listen to that voice, if you know what’s good for you.“

Mikami gasped at that, as seeing that thought was too much for him… it was just too wonderful to imagine. With that Misa turned to leave.

“ Where are you going? You’re just going to leave like this? I still have so many questions! ” Mikami cried out, reaching out towards Misa.

The Shinigami chucked. “Not to worry, I will come back, and tell you everything. Just wait… I still need to escort this young lady home, and make sure that she does not remember any of this meeting…”

Mikami leaned back in his seat. It suddenly occurred to him this the young woman was being controlled, which would certain explain her… oddness. He then looked at the white death note in his hands, and grinned widely.

Starting today, Mikami Teru would become the new god of the world!
===========================================================

Just so you know, the whole thing about how L’s name came to be isn’t canon. I made that up completely, save for some bits. In some hospitals in reality, they will actually do that thing with the names. But of course not all hospitals practice this.

I also made up the rules for the Death Eraser, as seeing there wasn’t that many rules to start with for it… and I wanted to use it, but I also wanted to use it in a way that would make sense. After all, if it didn’t have some limitations, then I could see a lot of people going nuts with it and completely abusing it. Can you imagine it if all the criminals suddenly came back to life, etc? There would be a total uproar.

Reviews are loved, as usual. ;)
