Chapter 13: Anniversary
~!~!~!~!~!~
Normal couldn't possibly describe the life that Light and Ryuzaki led after that day. There were panic attacks, there were occasional fits of rage, there were long talks about what had happened, about the emotions going through Light.
There were no more severe injuries, though the walls did occasionally develop holes. The food was usually quite bad, but the experience of making it was enough for them to forget about the flavor. Light would go to the roof on occasion, but it was a rare event, and one that was usually accompanied by a severe mood swing. The roof became the place where Light would go when he needed a good cry. When it was raining, he would sit in the stairwell.
None of the doors were locked anymore. There was still a surveillance system, but it wasn't used nearly so often as before, it had become little more than a formality. They lived together in relative peace, and Light progressed steadily towards healthy, with the support of both Ryuzaki and Watari.
For the first time in his life, Yagami Light finally felt the group cohesion his country was so famous for. He smiled, laughed, cried, grieved and lived with them. He was truly happy and, because he helped L with cases, he was rarely bored anymore.
Three hundred sixty-five days had passed since Yagami Light had confessed to being Kira. Networks across the planet were preparing one-year updates to celebrate the execution of the most notorious murderer since Cain murdered Abel. Light was, needless to say, feeling a bit more anxious and frustrated than usual.
It was on this day that Ryuzaki asked Light to follow him. He and Watari walked down to what had been the base for the Kira investigation a year before. Ryuzaki led him to a secured room that he had not previously gone to. Ryuzaki and Watari both had to give palm and retinal scans for the room to open, then again to open the box that sat in the center of the room.
"Yagami-kun, please touch the Death Note," Ryuzaki said as he lifted the lid.
Light's eyebrows shot up when he saw it. The memories of his reign as Kira flooded through his mind and he froze in the spot for a long moment, before he finally reached out with a single hand, let his fingertips touch the cover, slide along it slowly. "To retain my memories."
"Yes, Yagami-kun," Ryuzaki agreed, closing the box as soon as Light's hand was clear once more.
Light looked at his fingertips, then wiped them on his pants, as if he'd touched something dirty, shaking his head a little. "You sure picked a day to do that on, Ryuzaki," he muttered, leaving the room without so much as a glance backwards. He went back up to the apartment and dove back into their current case, sighing to himself.
It was only three hours later that Light noticed something was off. Ever since the execution, Rem had silently trailed him wherever he went, whatever he did, but right then... she wasn't there. He frowned, glancing over at Ryuzaki. "When was the last time you saw Rem?"
"Three months ago, when she turned to a pile of ash on the roof," Ryuzaki replied mildly. "Her Death Note has been destroyed."
Well that made Light feel unobservant.
"Don't feel bad, Yagami-kun. You have been quite distracted the past few months. We had a very difficult case and the media has been building up to the anniversary of your death quite aggressively," Ryuzaki said as he looked up some information in his database.
Light only grunted in reply, returning his attention to the case. Somewhere in the back of his mind, however, he wondered just why Rem had let herself die like that. The only thing he could come up with was that Misa had been in trouble somehow and Rem had saved her. It hadn't been uncommon for Rem to disappear for a day or two to check up on Misa, after all.
The month between Light's moment with the Death Note and the anniversary of his execution dragged on as if it never intended to end. He had two fits of rage throughout the week, and refused to go near a computer or the television, for fear of setting off another one. The panic attacks were back full force and only sharing the sofa with Ryuzaki was able to ease them.
Finally, the day came. Light went to the roof, spent the entire day up there, listening to the mournful bells ringing across the city. When the day was over... he felt better. He spent the next day talking with Ryuzaki about his days as Kira.
The first year, it turned out, was the hardest. Four years later, Light was able to watch the documentaries about Kira's reign without much grumpiness. His panic attacks were few and far between and the fits of rage would rarely occur more than once a year.
The world was a peaceful place, and so was Yagami Light's mind.
Six years to the day from his execution, it was as if the world fell apart.

A/N: And now, we shall arrive at the real meat of the plot. Fwahaha! =3 Short, sweet, and the skipper of time, however, was required for the segue.
