Chapter thirteen

Warning for this chapter– There may be some angst in this chapter. A lot of it.

I may have to repeat that I don’t have a beta-reader… so some parts may be not as refined as I’d like it to be. Some parts might get a little erratic as I’m kind of fast-forwarding some parts of the storylines from The Movie, Anime and Manga. That aside, I hope that you will continue to enjoy the plot that I’m weaving now

==============================================================

L found himself on top of the headquarter’s building, enjoying the feel of the wind on his skin. Light was there too, apparently doing the same thing as him. He couldn’t remember why they were doing this, and this bothered him.

Why couldn’t he remember the events that led up to them being on the roof? Did Kira, or Light have something to do with this?

“ What kind of game are you playing with me? I must say I don’t enjoy it at all…to be quite frank, it’s starting to tire me out. ” L spoke.

It was then Light turned to him with the same innocent, doe-eyes that he had when he gave up his death note. He appeared to be wounded by L’s words. Light walked towards him, and L couldn’t help but stiffen slightly.

Much to L’s surprise, Light simply threw his arms around L, hugging him tightly. Light nuzzled his face into L’s neck. L found himself hugging the boy in return against his own will.

He found himself enjoying the comforting heat of the younger boy….and the way Light was nuzzling his neck seemed to arouse him in a strange way. Yes, this situation was way too unsettling for him.

Light finally spoke, his voice sounding broken from grief. “ Why? Why do you hate me so? I’ve done everything in my power to prove myself to you… to become close to you. Yet you spurn me at every turn. You suspect me, and treat me like I’m worse than scum. Tell me what you find so horrible about me… please.”

L was surprised by those words. He was surprised at how emitonally exposed Light was, and it was so unlike Light to let himself be vurerable like this. In fact there was something weird about this situation now that he thought of it…

“I…. ” L tried to think of the best thing to say in this situation.

Light then looked into L’s eyes. He spoke in an almost sensual manner. “ I’ve come to love you, Lawliet. In fact, I’d do anything for you. Anything at all…”

L felt an warm flush go throughout his body as his imagination ran wild at those words.

That was when he felt another pair of arms wrap around him from behind. Startled, L did his best to look behind him.

“ No matter what you say, just remember this… you are always mine. And nothing anybody can say or do can change that. That means you too. ” The second person spoke, as he whispered into L’s ear.

It was then Light gave him some leeway, giving L the chance to turn partway so that he could see who was speaking.

To his surprise, it was…Light. There was two of them?! L was truly speechless now, and he was too baffled with the whole situation to even form any rational thoughts.

The second Light’s eyes seemed reflect an almost cruel amusement at L’s surprise and discomfort. “ Oh, Lawliet. What’s the matter, hmm? ”

The first Light pouted at this, as he hugged L tightly, pressing himself against L again. The first one spoke to the second: “ Stop this! You know that L don’t like it when you mess around with him. If you would just leave him alone, then he wouldn’t hate me so much. It’s all your fault that he doesn’t completely trust me. ”

With that, he nuzzled L’s neck again.

The second Light scoffed. “Don’t tell me what to do! Just as I said before, L is mine to do as I please. After all, nobody goes against me and gets away with it….” With that he grabbed L in an almost domating manner and pulled his face closer to the second Light’s. With that, Second Light gave him an rough kiss, with his tongue forcing it’s way into L’s mouth.

That was when L realized…This was a dream.

Suddenly, he woke up.

He was back in his bedroom, and it turned out that Light had cuddled up against him in his sleep.

Oh, boy.

He couldn’t believe that he had blacked out like that at all… and found himself in such a situation like this.

He tried to move away, but this only caused the cuddling boy to grip him tighter. Light’s face then nuzzled against L’s neck, before stopping again.

Oh, that explained some parts of the dream…

He sighed, and then studied Light’s face for a moment. It was strange, was a murderer supposed to look so innocent and angelic in his sleep?

In fact Light seemed to be having a pleasant dream, as he was smiling angelically in his sleep. L couldn’t help but wonder what he was dreaming about.

He recalled the dream he had, and then shifted uncomfortably. The fact that there had been two Lights which seemed to be the literal symbolism of the Yin and Yang…. was interesting. In fact now that he thought of it, that pretty much reflected Light accurately. But the other parts of the dream…. It was simply too uncomfortable for him to think about. He was just glad he had woken up when he had. Otherwise the dream might had taken an erotic turn… and well, he would had certainly woken up in a rather embrassing way…

He decided to just push that out of his mind, annoyed by it. He then promptly shoved Light away, not caring if that would wake the sleeping boy.

Light shifted, murmuring in his sleep. “ Mmm…Lawliet… ”

L jerked slightly, surprised. Were Light dreaming about him? Or was that just something else entirely?

Light’s eyes opened slowly, blinking sleepily. Once he came to, his seeming innocent eyes suddenly returned to their usual hard state.

He got up, and found L watching him as usual. Light muttered. “Honestly, am I really that interesting to watch all night? Sometimes I wonder if you even sleep… ”

Lawliet didn’t answer that question, as he casually remarked: “It’s 6 am, time to return to work. ”

Once Light was dressed properly, the two of them went up to the headquarters, where they found a very tired Mr. Yagami.

Mr. Yagami truly looked like hell. There was heavy bags under his eyes, and he looked like he had aged several years overnight. He slowly turned to them, his eyes becoming slightly pained when he laid eyes on his son.

L felt an wave of sadness at watching this scene. He had the innermost respect for Mr. Yagami, and felt that he didn’t deserve to go though this ordeal.

The others came filing into the room, save for Matsuda who apparently was still asleep. The men present so far looked as if they hadn’t gotten much sleep neither.

––––

The rest of the day wasn’t any better, in L’s opinion.

Matsuda had came in at 9 am, and apparently became embrassed that he had overslept compared to the rest. He profusely apologized for such an trivial matter, and then sobered up when he realized that he had to help dealing with yesterday’s aftermath.

There wasn’t much ingvestating as seeing the team had to deal with the castilites from yesterday.

L felt a sharp pain in his chest as he oversaw Watari’s corpse being moved for funeral preparations.

Yesterday his death had seemed so surreal to L, and it hadn’t felt real at all. So as an result, L had really thought about Watari beyond feeling anger at the fact that he was killed. He also had felt numb about all the deaths in his building, feeling nothing.

And now the funeral arrangement made reality crash into him like a ton of bricks. Watari… his most trusted friend and assistant, was truly gone.

He couldn’t really say that Watari was like a father to him, exactly. Even if the elderly man acted like it sometimes. but he had been like family in a lot of ways. In fact to be more accurate…Watari had been like a mixture of a uncle and an grandfather. Not that he knew what having those were like.

He bit his thumb hard, recalling the very time they had met.

~~~~~~~
17 years ago:
Watari’s hair hadn’t been white back then. His hair had been a very dark gray, with large strips of black throughout his hair and also his facial hair. Otherwise, he was completely the same back then.
He walked into the room, and then nervously stood there while waiting to meet the one that he would be working with as an assistant. He was also appalled at the state of the messy room, which was filled with piles of books, files and such. Apparently, L wasn’t a very tidy man…. Which only increased his unease. He so despised messy rooms.
Watari had heard of L’s work and had admired him greatly, all without even having met him yet. To be honest, Watari wasn’t exactly an moral person….He had gotten his huge fortune from not only being an inventor, but from his knowledge on how to legally scam certain rotten people out of their money. He had also dabbled in some marksman practice as an hired gunman who killed some notorious criminals. He had fancied himself a sort of robin hood, which was why he was able to deal with the fact that he had done some legally dubious things.
L had been the only one to realize this and caught him using this little secret. L then talked Watari out of that whole business… and Watari had been amazed at how L had been able to discover what he did when not even the FBI wasn’t able to uncover his secret.
And the more Watari learned about L’s exploits, his admiration had increased.
He had then wanted to work for L, as a sort of redemption for what he had done. And L had accepted.
He heard footsteps, and his excitement increased. He would finally get to meet L in person, when nobody else had been unable to.
To his surprise, a young boy with messy black hair had approached him.
The boy appeared to be 9 years old, and were dressed in loose clothing that appeared to be two times too big for him, which made him seem even more younger than he really was. He stared up at Watari with wide, unblinking eyes.
There was dark circles around the youth’s eyes, and the way his eyes seemed…. They appeared to be wide and innocent, yet there was darkness in them which hinted at the fact that those child-like eyes had seen far too much for any normal child. The way he was pale and thin also hinted at the fact that he wasn’t exactly leading a normal, healthy life as a young boy should.
That was when Watari knew that this little boy, no matter how improbable it might had seemed, was truly L. Oddly enough, he didn’t feel let down by the fact that the “man ” he had admired turned out to be a very young boy. In fact, this only increased his admiration of the young prodigy.
“ I’m L. ” The boy stated simply and casually, as if that fact was nothing special.
Watari bowed respectfully out of sheer habit. Even though he was born as an Englishman, his mother had been of Japanese descent and thus he was well-versed and raised with the Japanese custom. “ My name is Quillish Wammy, although I prefer to be called Watari. ”
L simply nodded. “ Alright. For your first job, Watari: Throw out all the papers and books in this room. ”
Watari looked at the mountains of files and books in the room. He then gazed at the young boy. “ Are you sure? There appears to be some very important information here… ”
L nodded again, answering rather simply: “ Yes. I’ve already memorized all of them… there is no need to keep all of them. ”
The elder man was surprised, but promptly got to work regardlessly.
Hours had passed as he was steadily and quickly clearing the huge room of all the stuff, while L worked tirelessly at an computer. Watari kept on stealing glances at the young boy, but said nothing.
Finally L spoke again. “ You also worked with the FBI for a while, correct? ”
Watari looked at the prodigy. “ No. I only gave an lecture for the freshmen; I wasn’t really paid for the job. Nobody knows I’m here. ”
“ I’m sure they were very interesting lectures. ” L spoke, “ It seems that companies who used checks designed by you have reduced their fraud losses by 90%. You also taught serval people on how to prevent fraud and scams, and also taught them on how to con the various systems in the world. ”
Watari smiled at that. “ True. That system of mine was such that nobody dared to speak of how easy it was to get away with fraud. ”
“ You mean to tell me that the world is consisted of morons? ”: L looked dubious at this.
“ No… ” Watari shook his head. “ I’m just saying that anybody, if they felt like it, could generate as much cash as they wanted. ”
L’s eyes widened. “ Hmm-mm. Sounds like it’d be an handy skill to have in tough times. So, what made you come work for me then? ”
“ Because I have great respect for L ” was Watari’s simple and honest answer.
L then looked solemn. “ I’m getting old…I intend to teach all the young ones I choose about my skills and technology. This is to ensure that all of the world’s criminals won’t get away with their crimes. And to prevent regrets when I die, I want to do everything I can possibly do. You, Watari, are going to help me with that. ”
Watari thought it odd that a 9-year-old would think of himself as old, and to think so solemnly about the future like that. However, he said nothing and simply nodded.
–––-
Months passed, and Watari begin to have an fatherly fondness for the young prodigy.
In fact the other day, he had discovered an picture that L had done, which apparently depicted Watari. It wasn’t the greatest picture in the world. In fact it was just an childish scribble on the back of an paper which had some criminals’ information on it. But it was good enough that one could tell that it was of Watari.
That picture, for some reason, warmed Watari’s heart so much that he found himself unable to throw it away. So he discreetly pocketed it For all of L’s genius, he was still just an 9-year-old and had the drawing skills typical of that age. It was still good in his eyes anyway.
Well, make that Ten-year-old, if Watari guessed correctly judging from that red circle on the calendar. Today was October 31….Halloween, and also L’s birthday.
He then went out to get a cake for L, along with various candies.
When he came back, L was hard at work on an difficult case as usual.
Watari cleared his throat, and then said in a loud voice as he held up the strawberry-topped cake: “ Happy birthday! ”
L turned around, surprise etched into his young face. When he saw the cake, delight spread all over his face. “ CAAAAAAKKEEE!! ” He couldn’t help but squeal.
The young boy scrambled to his feet and then bounced around Watari, attempting to grab at the cake in an demanding manner.
Watari held the cake out of his reach and then spoke sternly: “ No cake until you get out of those clothes. You’ve been wearing those for days, and I think you need a bath too. ”
L pouted slightly, but complied anyway for the cake. He came out of the bathroom half an hour later, wearing an oversized bathrobe which hung off his small frame and gathered around his feet. “ Say, how did you know it was my birthday? ” He asked, wondering.
“ I saw the red circle on the calendar. Suffice to say, I took a guess and figured that it was your birthday. ”
L seemed greatly impressed by this. “ Wow! You’ve got a great talent for inference. But what were you going to do if it wasn’t my birthday? ”
Watari chuckled as he cut up the cake into slices. “ Well in many ways, I made sure this cake wasn’t going to waste. Today’s Halloween, isn’t it? So I figured that we could hold a small party here, just the two of us. That’s why I also purchased the candy. ”
L smiled, as he devoted the cake happily. “ I’m happy… this is the very first time anybody’s actually gave me cake and candy for my birthday. In fact… now that I think of it, nobody’s really celebrated my birthday with me neither…Not even my parents when they were around, cared about that at all.”
Watari then wrapped one arm around L, into an half hug. “ Well… situations permitting, I’m going to celebrate it with you every year from now on, forever. You’ll never be alone on this day again.”
L’s eyes widened at this display of affection, and for the first time in his life, the young prodigy couldn’t think of any words to express himself. So instead, he just leaned against Watari’s warm embrace and smiled.
“ So what’s the date of your birth? That is… your birthday? ”
“ Hmm? Oh, I was born on 5/1/ 1933. ”
~~~~~~~~~~

Watari would never again celebrate with him together. In fact… after all this was over, he was going to be alone again.

And Watari would never again invent anything brilliant and great, nor anything else that would benefit the world greatly.

It wasn’t not only him who had suffered an loss; it was an loss for the world too.

L Lawliet pushed the negative emotions back as he recalled all of that.

Light appeared at his side, and spoke. “ It’s an pity about Watari. I would had brought him back too if I could had. He was so useful in his own way. ”

L felt his emotions brewing within him rather strongly at that statement, and he suddenly felt an bout of irrational anger. He growled, “I swear upon my own life…Kira will pay for the murder of Watari. And If you’re Kira, then it doesn’t matter how much I feel for you. I’ll kill you with my own bare hands.”

Light’s eyes widened in surprise at this. This was the first time that L had been so open about anything, and seemed to mean it too. “L….? ”

L mentally blushed with shame at his own outburst. Even if he truly meant every word, showing any kind of emotion so openly could mean that his enemy would use that and turn his emotions against him. And that would mean that Kira would win, and everything he–and Watari– had worked for, was for naught. He couldn’t simply let that happen.

He become his normal stoic self on the outside and continued to go over the funeral preparations. He then sent all the Data he had back to the house he had grown up in, and also the very place which Watari had owned. Right now Wammy’s house was being managed by another elderly man whom he also trusted very much. A man by the name of Roger.

Roger would be very upset to hear about Watari’s death–They had been very close friends…

====

I kind of wanted to do something special about Watari while expanding my own ideas on L’s past. That old man doesn’t get enough credit for everything he does by the fans, in my opinion.

And In a way, I unintentionally hinted at an Roger/Watari pairing at the end here…I just realized it when I was going though my own story for errors. (laugh).

For those who are wondering…. No, the bit where Watari’s “ criminal ” background wasn’t canon. It’s true that he was an inventor and ran an orphanage home for gifted children in order to train them as L’s successors, though.

His birthday is also accurate, according to “Death Note 13: How to read”.

I also totally made up the bit about how they met.

Also, according to it L was 25 years old when he died in 11/5/2004. So I guess that would make him 29 in 2008 today since he didn’t die on that day in this AU. =) (he was born in 1979, in case you were wondering and were too lazy to add up all the info).
