AN: I hope no one's put off by the drama in this, lol. It's been ages since I wrote it and it's making me giggle slightly to think how much like a Hollywood movie it is (Without the graphics! Lol) It is pretty heavy going even for me! Ah well, I am fond of it anyway.
Chapter 14: Zaiaku-kan to hakai (Guilt and destruction)
Ryuichi watched the two disappear into the dark before letting himself fall backwards. He sighed, a soft breath leaving his lips as he let his eyes slip closed.
"R-Ryuichi...!" Tohma gasped as he stood and ran to his friend's side, he was obviously unconscious. "I'm sorry!" He muttered, feeling the bitter bite of tears. "I'm...So sorry! Will you forgive me?" He buried his face into that soft brown hair and let himself give in to the tears as he held his friend close. He got no response except the soft breathing and the slow rise and fall of his chest.
Yuki pulled up at the docks and stumbled out of the car, he reached into the glove compartment and withdrew a small hand gun which he stuffed into his belt. The fresh sea air blew golden hair around his face and he scanned the silent area. Hiro climbed out after him. "Stay close, don't wander off." Yuki muttered. "Shuichi would kill me if you got hurt."
Hiro couldn't help the small smile as he followed the author. The place was dark, empty of people and eerie. They flitted through the shadows, always on the alert for some sound that would indicate the whereabouts of Shuichi.
Shuichi slowly opened his eyes, he felt groggy, like he had been hit over the head with something heavy. He groaned and rolled onto his back, he was lying on a hard surface and was cold. He could feel the world churning around him and he could smell salty air. Slowly his eyes widened as it hit him. He was at sea! He struggled to his hands and knees and began crawling through the small space, it was low and the rough wooden boards gave him splinters. He finally made it to a door and pushed on it. It creaked but didn't move. Shuichi stifled the cry of fear by biting his lower lip. He could hear rough voices from somewhere above him, but he had obviously been kidnapped. He curled into a corner and wrapped his arms around his knees. "Yuki." He whispered to the darkness. "I'm...I'm so sorry!" he felt tears sting his eyes and stifled the gut wrenching sobs. His memory was horribly blurry from the night, all he remembered was drowning in that intense blue and then floating away on blissful currents of sweet forgetfulness. He could also remember soft whispers, sweet kisses and gentle, loving touches. He sighed and tipped his head back against the wall, he looked up at the ceiling and heard people walking around above him. He closed his eyes. "Yuki...I love you." He sang softly in the dark, his voice barely rising above a whisper as he staved off the horrible well of dark despair that threatened to break his spirit.
Slowly the sun rose. Hiro sat on a pile of broken boxes, his head hanging and his hair hiding his face. They were too late, the boat had left before sunrise. Yuki had disappeared leaving Hiro alone, he didn't know what to do so he sat there in silence, ignoring the world around him. As the light of day illuminated the world he wanted nothing more than to crawl back into a dark room and sleep, he wanted to forget everything. Yet, he couldn't escape Shuichi's smile, his happy go lucky attitude and the way he would always bounce back no matter what had befallen him. Slowly he lifted his head, the sunlight falling across his face as he came to a realisation; Shuichi would never let him give up. Shuichi would never give up on him. A small smile spread across his face and he slid down from his perch. "Wait for me Shuichi." He said to the horizon. "Wait and I'll come get you, I'll make sure you return."
Yuki walked through dark streets, his head hanging low. Despair seeped into his very soul, leaving nothing but darkness. It engulfed him, suffocating him in a blanket. He stopped, one hand on a filthy wall. He was down some alley way, other than that he had no idea where he was. Slowly he slid to his knees, his legs unable to hold him up anymore. Shuichi, the only thing that had been keeping the darkness at bay was gone, his only attachment to this life had shattered...now he had nothing. He shoved his head into his hands and allowed his world to fall to pieces around him, he didn't care anymore. What did he have to live for now?
Ryuichi slowly opened his eyes, he found himself staring up at his ceiling. He was warm and could feel something beside him. He turned his head and looked to see Tohma, he was curled in a ball and had his eyes closed, but Ryuichi knew better than to think he was asleep. Slowly he rolled over and climbed out of bed, his bare feet touched the cold wood floor and he paused when he heard a soft voice.
"Where are you going?"
Ryuichi didn't look at him. He kept his head low so his face was covered. "Dunno..." he whispered softly. "I guess...I just wanted to..." he sighed. "Never mind."
Tohma sighed and wrapped his arms around his friend's shoulders. "What's done is done, it's over." He said softly.
Ryuichi went stiff, his hands tightening on the bed sheet. "You've condemned Shuichi to a life of pain and pointless suffering...all because you were jealous." He said slowly, not allowing a hint of the roiling fury he felt infect his voice. He knew he had a decision to make, and it would be the hardest thing he had ever had to do...and he knew it would destroy him. But anything was better than this horrible guilt, which was slowly eating away at him.
Tohma sighed. "I know...I know what I did was wrong but...I had to do something! I could not stand by while that brat destroyed everything! He would have been the end of us! The end of our family! Is that what you want?"
Ryuichi shook his head. "No, but Shuichi was going to stay quiet. Shuichi was never going to say a word to anyone...he was...so sweet and innocent. Not like me. Not like this..." he paused and took a breath. "Not like this horrible part of me that wants to make people hurt!"
Tohma pulled away. What could he say to that? "What are you going to do?" he asked.
Ryuichi shivered and finally turned around. "I'm going to hunt him down." He said firmly. "I'm going to finally undo what you have done and hopefully...I can put everything back to normal. Hopefully...I'll be able to earn at least a tiny piece of Shuichi's forgiveness." Tohma sat still. He didn't know what to say. He could see the pain in Ryuichi's eyes, the same pain that had been in Eiri's and felt the guilt overwhelm him. In trying to avoid hurting the two people he cared most about he had ended up causing more damage, once again he was to blame for the suffering and pain of others, all because he had been jealous. Ryuichi slid off the bed, he silently walked across the room and turned once to look back at Tohma. "You can do what you want with me when I return, Tohma. I don't care anymore."
"Yuki-san."
Yuki looked up slowly, he found himself squinting up at Hiro. He shook his head and covered it again.
Hiro sighed heavily and leaned against the wall, he folded his arms across his chest and lit a cigarette. "Should have expected nothing less from a selfish coward." He muttered, loudly enough for the man at his feet to hear. Yuki twitched but didn't look up. "I just thought you should know, I'm leaving. I'm going to get Shuichi, if you want to come, fine. If not...I'll see you around." He turned away and felt something grab him, he paused and smiled to himself.
"Do you know where he is?" Yuki said roughly.
"No, but..."
"I do."
Both men turned at the sound of the almost childish voice behind them. Ryuichi stood, cloaked in shadows, his eyes glittering and rather large in his face. He was dressed entirely in black, his face revealed this time. "Where did you come from?" Yuki croaked.
"Sh!" Ryuichi pressed his finger to his lips and his eyes darted around. He stepped closer. "I'm...I'm not supposed to be doing this." He whispered. "Tohma will be angry with me, and I'll be punished...b-but I want to find him too." His huge eyes filled with tears. "I don't want to see him hurt!"
"You mean Shuichi?"
Ryuichi nodded, his fingers twisting the hem of his top. He chewed his lip before taking a shuddery breath. "Come with me! I can get us a boat...we might be able to catch up with them!" he beckoned them closer and his eyes narrowed, all emotion left his face and Hiro could have sworn he got taller. Ryuichi crept silently to the mouth of alleyway, doing this in broad day light would dangerous but he had little choice. He slipped into the shadow of a large pile of crates and beckoned the other two forward. This was going to be made even more difficult with them two making so much noise! They couldn't even seem to breathe quietly. "Che..." He hissed. "Keep silent! Do everything I say, no matter what it is! We must work together and make no noise!"
Both men nodded and Ryuichi took a breath. He searched the area and found a perfect boat, it was on its own.
Shuichi lay still, his hands covering his head. He was confused. He had no idea why he was at sea, he had no idea what these men were planning on doing to him or where they wanted to take him but he was afraid. He stifled a sob, last time he had made too much noise someone had come down and hit him until he fell silent. He whispered that name into the darkness, the name that was a culmination of his hopes, his dreams and everything! "Yuki!" He had to be saved! He had to see Yuki again, even if it was only from a distance! He had to live on in the hope of seeing those gorgeous eyes again!
Tohma had no idea what to do with himself anymore. He paced Ryuichi's living room, his feet bare and a constant frown on his face. Finally the door opened and he looked up, K stood there with a raised eyebrow. "K, Excellent!" he straightened and looked the American in the eyes. "We need to get a boat, as fast as possible. Bring a few others, there's...a mistake that needs rectifying!"
K grinned. "Yes sir." He said in English. Seguchi smiled, a small curl of his lips that was filled with coldness but K returned it as if it didn't even bother him.
They were out to sea before anyone even noticed them. The boat was a small one, with sails and engine. Ryuichi worked quickly, the sea breeze blowing his hair around his face as he unfurled the sails. Yuki was amazed, as always, by the singer's dexterity and ability to multitask. Hiro stood in the prow looking out over the waves, he had managed to find a hair tie and his hair was in a tail at the back of his head. A cigarette hung from his lips as he squinted at the boats ahead of them. "How will we know which is which?" he asked as Ryuichi finished what he was doing and stood behind him.
"It will be as innocuous as possible, a boat people will ignore." He said in a serious tone. He reached up and pointed. "Something like that."
Up ahead was an old looking fishing boat. Hiro narrowed his eyes and shielded them from the glare of the sun. He could see two men on board but no sign of Shuichi. "How do you know?"
"Because they're the men Tohma got to take Shuichi away." Ryuichi replied softly, the pain and guilt in his voice was more than obvious.
Hiro turned to him and frowned. "Why are you helping us? Seguchi's your boss, he'll punish you...won't he?"
Ryuichi's eyes darkened until they were almost black. He lifted his hand and took hold of a rope to hold himself steady. "He will. He'll have to...even if he doesn't want to. He can't have people just going off and doing whatever they want...I-I'm disobeying a man I swore my loyalty to...even if he didn't specifically order me not to go..." He closed his eyes and the pain on his face was obvious for a split second before it was gone again. Hiro felt a pang of sympathy for him.
"How will he punish you?" He asked out of curiosity.
Slowly Ryuichi opened his eyes and smiled. "Who knows? He's a sadistic bastard at times. I'll do whatever he wants me to...after we get Shuichi back." His smile widened and became slightly childish the wind picked up, whipping his hair around his face and his eyes shone. He jumped nimbly up onto the lip of the boat, one hand gripping a rope as he balanced. "But...I suppose we have to enjoy life when we can!" He tipped his head back, the heat of the sun being cooled by the wind as he stretched his arms out to either side of him. "We'll get him back! I promise!" Hiro couldn't stop the small smile on his lips as he watched the Singer stand on the prow. "Come on! Join me! It feels like your flying...if you close your eyes!"
Hiro did as he was asked, wobbling inelegantly and grabbing a nearby rope for balance. "Woah!" he wobbled again before stretching his arms out in imitation of Ryuichi. He closed his eyes and it really did feel like he was flying! He let out a sudden, bright laugh.
Yuki watched the two musicians he couldn't understand how they could be laughing when Shuichi was in danger, but he didn't dwell on it. He frowned down into the water, sunlight glittered off the white headed waves and he sighed heavily. This had all started because Shuichi had fallen in love with him, this was all his fault and he was going to do everything within his power to bring the singer home. He would find a way to make it all up to him, he had to. He sat, hunched up and put his face in his hands, he could have sworn he felt small arms wrap around him and a soft whisper in his ear;
I love you...
He stifled his sob, hoping no one would hear him. "Shuichi." He whispered into his hands.
Hiro finally opened his eyes and stepped down from the prow as reality crashed into him again. He sighed heavily. "Sakuma-san?" He asked.
"Yes?"
"What...what is going to happen to Shuichi if...if we don't rescue him?" Hiro asked the question that had been plaguing him, he wasn't sure if he wanted an answer but he asked it anyway.
Ryuichi eyed him carefully, as if judging if he wanted to know. "He will be sold." He began slowly. "I've seen it happen..." he looked over the water again. They were drawing nearer to the boat. "He will be forced to sell his body, in exchange for drugs. Men will pay good money for someone like him, someone who is so...innocent. He will be trained, of course...taught to do things..." A dark look came over the singers face and Hiro suddenly knew he had experienced this 'Training'. "His mind will be broken, his body little more than a toy for perverts. He will become addicted to drugs until he cannot live without them and he will do anything to get hold of his next hit." He ran fingers through his hair. "If we can't get to him in time...we won't know him anymore."
Hiro shuddered. The day suddenly seemed cold and he regretted asking the question. Suddenly an idea formed in his head, he knew nothing about Ryuichi's past except that he was part of Nittle Grasper, he had an inkling that Ryuichi's child hood was less than happy. He suspected he had had to do things no child should have to do. The singer looked over at his companion and saw the thoughts flicker across his open face. He smiled to himself remembering his old Master, the man who had taught him how to kill silently, how to murder so there was hardly any blood. He closed his eyes and lowered his head, he could see the man's face. He had exchanged this knowledge for the use of his body, Ryuichi knew what it was like to sell yourself and he would wish it on no one. He had done it all for Tohma, every bruise, every cut, every scar...it was all for the man he was in process of betraying. He took a deep breath and shoved it all away, he had a job to do and now he would see it through to the end, even if it meant he died. Even if Tohma asked him for the ultimate punishment, he would do it without any hesitation because he knew he had done wrong. He smiled slightly bitterly as he wandered if Tohma really would ask him to do that, he laughed softly to himself. "Of course he might...he's a heartless bastard when he wants to be!"
"What was that?" Hiro looked at his companion and Ryuichi simply shook his head, his eyes glittering like the sea beneath them. It occurred to the guitarist suddenly that Ryuichi was acting like a man prepared to die and he felt cold suddenly.
