A/N: At long last, the saga concludes. I hope you've enjoyed the series overall, and I hope the note that I'm ending on works for you readers. I didn't quite want to go full-on "They lived happily ever after," given the overall tone of my stories thus far, so this is the result. Please leave feedback - positive or negative - as a review or PM on the forums.

Epilogue: The Life You Left Behind
Life at Yokai Academy continued after that week, and subtle improvements manifested over the course of the following weeks, months, and years. The weather continued to change with the seasons, but it never again reached the frigidity of those first weeks of December after outer Moka left. Furthermore, the breezes no longer gusted to lift girls’ skirts. Students and teachers alike grew less and less hostile, meaning fewer fights breaking out on campus. Even the buildings seemed less foreboding as time passed.
The Newspaper Club settled into its new circumstances with varying degrees of difficulty. Moka grew to appreciate the other girls and even consider them friends, though that took some time. She participated more in class and contributed regularly to the newspaper. Whenever one of the other girls claimed Tsukune for the week, she spent more time with Kokoa, eating lunch with her and sparring with her to the younger vampire’s content. Moka’s proudest day as older sister came when Kokoa assumed leadership of the Martial Arts Club the next year.
Now that she had her Destined Mate’s love, Kurumu began seriously thinking about their future together. On Ms. Nekonome’s advice, she began building her modeling portfolio through shoots with the Photography Club. Much to their disappointment, she refused to pose nude, but occasional lingerie and swimsuit sets mollified the club members. Any thoughts of abusing photos of Kurumu vanished under the threat of her illusion powers bringing every single one of their worst fears to life.
Yukari watched with envy as the other three took their turns as Tsukune’s girlfriend, though she could never decide whether knowing what she was missing made her situation better or worse. She could at least console herself with the proliferating signs of her body’s blossoming, the myriad harbingers of the bombshell she knew she’d become (again). By the end of third year, she’d regained all but the last bra cup – which, combined with acceptance letters from every university in Japan, she considered a good year’s work. After a great deal of discussion, she and Tsukune agreed to resume their relationship after sophomore year of university, once Yukari turned sixteen.
Mizore worked hard to keep her grades up, not only to avoid expulsion but to actively pass and graduate. Conversations with her mother revealed that few of her race attended high school, and even fewer finished; due to their fertility issues, most were married and pregnant by seventeen. Mizore decided, per Moka’s old advice for her to live her life first, to seize this opportunity that few other snow-women could, especially since finishing high school was, in fact, a Shirayuki family tradition. Nonetheless, she also arranged to start working at her parents’ ski resort after graduation to save money and be close to home once she and Tsukune started trying in earnest to “make babies.”
With vague plans to start a family after high school, Tsukune started working odd jobs over the longer breaks to save money; he also applied to several different universities, with an eye for those with prestigious journalism programs. Working on the school newspaper had grown on Tsukune over the course of his three years at Yokai Academy, so the young man decided to pursue that career, even with newspapers giving way to Internet news sources. He hoped that career might allow him to travel with Kurumu – and Moka, once her father’s expectations for her to help him run his vast business empire became clear.
All too soon, their time at Yokai Academy ran its course. Life beckoned. For these five – Tsukune Aono, Moka Akashiya, Kurumu Kurono, Yukari Sendo, and Mizore Shirayuki – it’d look quite different from the norm, different from any of their expectations. Whether the consequence of their goal as ambassadors for human-monster coexistence or their goal to maintain their complex relationship, they all left the school knowing that, regardless of the challenges ahead, they could face anything – together.
~~~~~
“Graduation Day really snuck up on everyone, didn’t it?” Ruby hummed, seemingly to herself as she swept the Barrier Room.
“It really did!” agreed the chamber’s other occupant, who materialized sitting cross-legged atop the altar in the center of the room. “Third year just flew by!”
Ruby giggled and glanced over at her companion, long used to the pink-haired apparition’s nude manifestation, whose voice and more-formal speech sounded both like outer Moka’s and like an older, wiser version thereof. “Do you regret not being able to join them as they embark on their lives together?”
The softly-glowing, partially-transparent woman shook her head. “I’m needed here. Maybe this was my destiny all along – to bring my daughter and that wonderful young man together, and get out of the way.” She sighed, more forlorn-sounding than probably intended.
“What do you mean?” asked Ruby, brows knitting together.
“I was in the way,” rephrased the apparition. “I’d suffered because of my status as Issa’s mistress, so I didn’t want that for my daughter. I didn’t want to go through it again, either, once Tsukune decided to pursue the others.” Her brow furrowed. “Even now, it’s confusing, having been both Moka Akashiya and Akasha Bloodriver. Separating myself from my daughter has restored my identity and hers, so that’s another reason for me to have stayed out of the way once I came here.”
Ruby offered a comforting smile. “I’m certainly grateful for all the positive changes you’ve made as the school’s guardian angel, as it were.” The witch’s smile took on a wicked edge. “I wonder just how close a watch you kept on Tsukune over the past year.”
The ghostly image tapped her index fingers together, one of outer Moka’s old nervous habits, and replied, “I’m not a pervert, Ruby. I never peeked… on purpose.” Ruby laughed; if the spirit could’ve blushed, she would’ve. “I couldn’t help that my daughter liked to have sex on the school rooftop during lunch!” she added in a tone somehow both scandalized and envious.
The witch laughed even harder. “I think you just wish you’d thought of it,” she teased.
The apparition didn’t deny the charge. More seriously, she answered, “The second half of this year just made me miss the days I used to spend with Tsukune and the others in general.” She let out a self-deprecating laugh. “I guess you could say I enjoyed having the chance to relive my teenage years with wonderful friends and – once we finally came together – a top-notch lover.”
Ruby blushed. “I’m jealous. Tsukune and I never quite… happened.”
“Right… sorry,” apologized the spirit. “It truly is for the best, though, that I’m here. My daughter is free to live her life without sharing a body with her mother. Tsukune can love her, Kurumu, Mizore, and Yukari without my interference. I can continue to make this school a place for all monsters to learn and grow, and maybe appreciate the human world that much more.”
She giggled, almost girlish again. “Who knows? With Tsukune’s success here, the Headmaster might recruit more human students.”
Ruby shook her head and swept a bit more. “I can’t decide if that’s a good idea, or a terrible one.”
The apparition didn’t respond for a long moment. When the witch turned around, she saw the faraway look on the spirit’s face. “He… they… just crossed the Barrier…” With a soft, broken voice, she whispered, “They’re… they’re gone.”
Ruby shut her eyes against the tears that threatened to spring forth with the knowledge that her friends had moved on to new challenges, new adventures. “It took Tsukune a long time to get over you, you know,” she murmured. “Why didn’t you appear to him? Why only appear to me and swear me to secrecy?”
“He needed to move on,” answered the pink-haired specter in a faraway voice. “If he knew I still… exist… he would have moved heaven and earth to get me back… and destroyed this school, and the human world, in the process.” She smiled sadly. “I couldn’t let him endanger both worlds for my sake, especially since they’re all so determined to bring the two worlds together in peace.”
Ruby wiped her eyes. “I’m sure they’ll come back someday – maybe on Parents’ Day for your grandchildren.”
The apparition laughed at the thought, a sound like tinkling bells. “You’re too much, Ruby, planning that far ahead!”
“Perhaps,” the witch conceded. “Until then, I’m glad I have one friend who stayed here. We’ll just have to keep each other company.”
The entity sighed once more. “No offense, Ruby, but it’s still a gilded cage. I’m trapped here, much as my daughter was sealed by the rosary,” she ruminated. A shadow of sorrow darkened her eyes. “I’ll miss out on all the important moments ahead: my daughter’s engagement, her marriage, the births of her children… not to mention the others’.”
Ruby frowned, knowing that she’d miss out on them, too, if in a different way. “I’m sure I’ll receive invitations to parties for all those happy events. I’d be happy to bring back pictures, at least, Lady Bloodriver,” she offered.
“That’s… very kind of you, Ruby,” replied the apparition. “Part of me will always regret that I can’t continue to be involved in Tsukune’s life, or the lives of my most precious friends.”
Ruby regarded the incorporeal woman curiously. “If you knew back then what saving the school would cost you, would you still do it?”
“Tsukune… my daughter Moka… my dear friends Kurumu, Yukari, Mizore, and you… this school… Tsukune’s family in the human world – all of you were counting on me,” she replied. “I had to learn my place: protecting the two worlds, and with them my daughter’s, my dear friends’, and my sweet Tsukune’s chances… to live their lives in peace.”
The bound soul of Akasha Bloodriver, once one of the three Dark Lords, mightiest of monsters, paused, and a soft smile graced her lips. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
