Chapter Fifteen

Warning for this chapter There may be some offensive things for religious people in this chapter. So I’d like to offer an disclaimer that Kira or Mikami’s viewpoints on Gods does not reflect my beliefs at all. There’s mentions of blood too here.

I may have to repeat that I don't have a beta-reader so some parts may be not as refined as Id like it to be. Some parts might get a little erratic as I'm kind of fast-forwarding some parts of the story lines from The Movie, Anime and Manga. That aside, I hope that you will continue to enjoy the plot that I'm weaving now.
_____________________________________________________

Today was an day off for Mikami Teru, which was perfect. He didn't have to think up an excuse for his office today for taking off time away from his work to go visit an certain house.

More spefically, Light Yagami's house. He couldn't 'remember' Light's address from looking though the borrowed memories, but looking up his name in the address books had done the trick.

And there, he'd get to see Light's face, hopefully.

He once went over the carefully crafted lie he had came up with for entering the home in his head as he walked up to the Yagami household. He just hoped that only the women were home today, but knowing the busy lives the males of the household had, it was unlikely that Mr. Yagami was home today.

He knocked on the door and rang the doorbell. He waited for a few seconds, and then an middle-aged woman who looked like she must had been once a very attractive young lady appeared. "Yes? Can I help you?"

Mikami gave her his best charming smile. "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Yagami, to bother you. But I was wondering if I could come in for a few minutes. Here's my card."

With that, he gave her his business card.

She took the card though the open crack in the door, and looked at it. She looked up with an slightly puzzled expression. "What does an lawyer want with us?"

Mikami gave an slight bow. "I was wondering if you would kindly answer my questions about Mr. Yagami regarding some previous cases that he was involved with. It would help me greatly with an current case that I'm working on."

Mrs. Yagami seemed to tense up slightly. "So, are you involving my husband in some kind of legal dispute?"

Mikami just shook his head, still smiling at the woman. "Madam, I don't intend to do that at all. I'm actually creating an case against an criminal that your husband had arrested before in the past. But I don't wish to explain to you out here, it would likely take too long..."

Mrs. Yagami thought this piece of information over, and then nodded. "Very well. Why don't you come in then?" with that, she opened the door.

Mikami couldn't help but think: 'Score!!' as he walked into the home.

He was hardly in the home for scarcely a minute and already he found what he was looking for. In the main hallway, one side of the wall was covered with family photos. There was an wedding photo, and then of course the picture of the children as they were growing up.

There was an slightly younger Yagami Light, but Mikami regonized him right off the bat.

He noticed that the woman was looking at him, and he turned to smile at her. "You have a very lovely family."

She smiled slightly. "Please wait in the living room, and I'll make us Tea."

He walked into the living room and then sat down. He thought a little bit. Would an younger picture of Yagami Light do in order to visualize him and write down his name? Or did the image have to be current...?

He looked around, and then spotted some more pictures of the family. He saw one of Light again, one that looked more current from what his borrowed memories were telling him.

He couldn't help himself as he impulsively reached out to take an framed picture that was sitting on a small table. He studied the picture, which depicted Light smiling as he held his tennis championship trophy.

"that's Light Yagami, my son."

He looked up to see Mrs. Yagami smiling, as she came in with an tray of tea and some crackers.

"He looks like a very good young man. I bet he does well in his studies." Mikami replied, making polite conversation.

"Well... I don't want to brag, but did you know that he's ranked #1 in the student list at Taro? He's not just hardworking and studious, but very brilliant as well." She boasted slightly, swelling with motherly pride.

Mikami nodded. "And with his father as a policeman, he must have a very strong sense of justice too. Truly seems to be an exceptional young man."

Mrs. Yagami's eyes seemed to have a hint of sadness, but then she smiled. "Yes. I'm very proud of him."

Mikami then thought, "I don't get it... He appears to be perfect. He's everything an god could want to be... and is. So why did my god reject him as his body host? I guess even such a perfect guy could have a serious flaw."

"So you were going to tell me about that case you were working on, which somehow involves my husband...?" Mrs. Yagami politely but impatiently prodded the young lawyer.

He then proceeded to tell her about a fake case that he had fabricated, using the name of an actual criminal that was known to be roaming about freely right now thanks to an lack of evidence. One that had records of being arrested by Mr. Yagami.

He then proceeded to ask her some pretty easy questions that any wife could easily answer provided that his husband actually told her about his work. Which he apparently had done.

He then quickly made an smooth exit, telling her to have his husband call him so that Mikami could get some answers directly from the source.

She nodded, saying that she'll get her husband to call as soon as he was able to.

He thanked her for answering his questions, and then he left the house. He walked down the street with an smile on his face.

'That was easier than your first attempts to see everyone's faces. I wonder why you didn't do this in the first place...' Kira's voice commented.

'Forgive me for not taking this easier route first before using that extreme tactic. I suppose I get so overzealous for your sake that I might go for the most dramatic route instead of the easiest method.' Mikami mentally replied back, feeling a little bit uneasy.

'Are you afraid that I'll leave you, like I did Yagami Light?' Kira asked, sounding as if he was smirking.

The uneasy feeling in Mikami Teru started to grow even more.

Kira laughed. 'Don't worry. Don't you remember the reason I told you about why I left that boy? He was too prideful for his own good, and did not listen to his god as he should have. You are the opposite, and that was why I have chosen you. That is why I will not leave you.’

Mikami felt better now that he recalled Kira saying something like that in the past.

‘I’d like to tell you about an binding ritual, one that will bond us together forever. It also will instantly cause you to be reborn into a new body together with me, should something happen to you in this life. If you do this, then you’ll never have to fear death again, and you can carry on judgments alongside me for all eternity.’

That stopped Mikami in his tracks. He couldn’t had imagined anything better than his current state of life right now. But What Kira described… it sounded way too good to be true. Not having to fear death, to be completely protected by his god and carrying on divine punishment from above even after his mortal life was over…

“ YES! I’ll do it!! Just tell me what to do! ” Mikami let out an joyous cry, drawing weird looks from the people walking by.

“ Mommy, what’s that weird man doing? He looks like he’s talking to himself… ” A young girl pointed at him. Her mother shot him strange and embrassed looks and just whispered to the girl, “ Don’t make eye contact, honey. Just let’s just leave quickly… ”

Mikami ignored them, and then quickly walked towards the subway that was headed for his home. He got on the train, intently listening to what Kira had to tell him about the ritual.

When he arrived at his place, he practically ran for his desk and fumbled around as he attempted to quickly open his briefcase which had his death note inside.

He knew that he had all the time in the world to do it, but he couldn’t help himself. He hadn’t felt this excited and anxious ever since he first got his death note. In fact… he almost felt like an eager and anxious bride who couldn’t wait to marry the man of her dreams.

He paused to chuckle over that mental image, which apparently amused Kira too.

He managed to get the briefcase open, and pulled out the white death note. He opened it to the blank pages. He quickly went to get an knife, a bowl and an feather he had happened to pick up. He’d use the feather as an old-fashioned quill pen, since the current pens he had wasn’t really good for writing in blood.

He sat down in his desk chair, an maniac grin spreading across his face as he plunged the knife into his hand. It hurt like hell when he did it, but he didn’t mind the pain at all. For his God, he’d do anything. He let the blood flow freely into the small bowl. He didn’t even bother to stop the bleeding as he picked up the feather and dipped the bottom of it into the bowl.

He then started writing the ‘will’ that kira had dictated three times.

Soon, his blank page looked something like this:

“ I, Mikami Teru, willingly become an conveyor of death.
I willingly become the true will of Death, To become an true death god. I bind myself to the current death god haunting me, all of my current lifespan shall become the death god’s own when I die. But my new life shall begin anew. I willingly give myself up.”

It was an literal pain to have to write all that three time and keeping his bloody hand from messing up what he had written at the same time, but he managed.

Now all he had to do was rip out the bloody page and shallow it. He did so, chewing on the page little by little.

Mikami teru’s eyes almost watered at the foul taste. The texture of the notebook might had felt and seemed like normal paper, but the horrible taste was nothing like he’d tasted before.
In fact the only thing that kept him from spitting out the foul paper was the sweet, coppery taste of his own blood. He chewed it until the whole paper was nothing but pulp, and he managed to slowly shallow it. He then ran into the kitchen to get himself a drink, wanting to get rid of that taste in his mouth.

As he gulped down a bottle of water he had stored in his fridge, Kira spoke to him.

“We are now bonded as one, and now we have nothing to worry about, save for how to kill L. ”

That was when Mikami started to feel strange, like he was lightheaded. He wondered if it was from losing blood.

Now that the excitement was over, the pain suddenly hit him and his rational side told him that he probably should go to an hospital now. he had stabbed his hand to the point where the wound was too deep to close on his own.

He quickly grabbed an towel and then applied pressure to the wound.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He got back from the hospital, fatigued from his walk considering that he didn’t have a car.
He had made up some excuse about being an shoddy cook even though he was actually quite an exceptional one. he had accidentally cut himself while cooking, he claimed. The doctor on duty at the ER didn’t think anything of it, and just stitched him up. He did tell Mikami to be more careful next time though.
He smiled to himself despite the pain. It had been worth it in the end.
He now knew Mr. Yagami and his son’s faces, along with their names. Which meant that he now had the security of writing down their names in the death note and controlling their actions in their final moments if he wanted. And now he was fully bonded with his god. Truly the best day ever.
Not even caring that there still was blood splatters trailing from the desk to the kitchen, he went to bed and promptly fell asleep with a smile on his face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kiraomi roared in rage at the Shinigami King. “ Your ideals and ways are foul! Just look at those citizens of this realm! They do nothing but laze about and not even properly use the powers that they were given with. And YOU do nothing about it just because you think there is balance! Let me ask you…how can there even be balance when nobody fulfills their true duty here?”

The Shinigami King was literally big as an mountain. He seemed even more huge than that when he was actually extending his milky white wings to their fullest, like he was doing right now. He had an humanoid, skeleton-like build, but his build seemed to be made out of unnaturally beautiful materials that seemed almost like the white opal found on earth, yet it was clearly something you couldn’t find on earth. Being so old and rarely moving from place to place…he even had an moss-like substance growing on him. The way he was postured and the way he seemed sullen… you wouldn’t had thought he was an king of anything save for his giant size.

Kiraomi was almost an mirror double, save that he had no moss growing on him and he was standing upright, proudly displaying all the finest giant jewels that he had decorated his body with. Whereas the King was quiet and withdrawn, Kiraomi tended to be more vocal and liked to socialize with the other Shinigami.

For Twins, the two was truly different as day and night.

“Brothers should not yell at each other in such a manner, Kiraomi. ” The King remarked calmly. “ Besides, what would you do to make them do their…..’true duty’? ”

“ Isn’t that obvious? ” Kiraomi smirked, striking an unneeded grandiose pose. “ For one thing, I’d stop those creatures who dares call themselves Gods or even claiming to be the one ‘true god’. We Death gods were here in the very start of the universe before them, when we two were the first life forms to die and the very first to become reborn into this form. So why should they dare to assume that they can create their own afterlife and control where all the life forms go to? We should be the only ones to have the rights and the claim to all life in this universe! The God who created Heaven and hell has a lot to answer for…claiming credit for everything, even the acts that he didn’t even personally commit! He even had the gall to tell his own worshipers, ‘you shall have no other gods before me.’ as if he was the only one who existed.“

He then sneered. “ I’d like to see proof backing up half the things that he claims he did! Or is he an she? Hmm….he refuses to show himself to anybody, even his own angels so everything about him is an compete mystery. I wonder what is it about himself that he’s so scared to show? Ha, maybe he’s a fraud!”

The Shinigami King got tired listening to this. “So in other words, you want to start a war between the death gods and the other gods? That would create too much unneeded conflict, and that’d tear apart the balance of the universe. So many unnecessary deaths on all sides would occur, even in the worlds of the living. The balance of the universe is already fragile enough as it is… ”

“ But, Daikijira!! ” Kiraomi continued to yell, dismayed that his own twin didn’t seem to understand at all. “ We were born with this ability, with this burden long before any other gods came along… Why can’t you realize that it’s rude of them to butt in and take that power as their own? We alone should be able to rule the cosmos, to dictate the lives of humans and other living beings on their worlds. We alone should be able to decide who lives and who dies. ”

The king just chuckled. “ I’m happy that you feel so strongly about being an death god. But… as long as I’m king, I don’t think I’ll ever do such a thing. I feel that the current arrangement suits us just fine. Besides, what would we do with all those souls floating about here if that came true? It’s just too much trouble to form a new theology based on us.”

Kiraomi got fed up at this point. “ I don’t get why you get to be the ‘king’ just because you happened to die a few seconds before me in our last life!” He growled and flew off.
+++++++

An long time span passed, and there was an battle going on in the Shinigami Realm.

There was the opposing sides– The King‘s side and… Kiraomi’s side.

The death gods who were friends and fully agreed with Kiraomi’s ideals clawed and fought their ways in the battlefield with great zeal. They were Death Gods who wanted an greater rank for themselves, and to have real power.

The other side had Death gods who were simply happy and content with the way things were, even if it got a little bit boring at times. They didn’t want to deal with all of the hassle of setting up a whole new system dealing with the souls of the living outside their realm. They didn’t have as much as passion as the other side did, so in the end there was more wounded parties on this side.

In the end, it was ultimately up to Kiraomi and his brother, the king.

“ Kiraomi… you don’t have to do this. I would rather not fight you. ” The King said, sounding like a tired old man as usual.

“ you sound like such a coward, as usual. ” Kiraomi sneered, and the death gods on his side laughed.

“ After I kill you, my dear brother, I’ll become King and God of everything. and I’ll put Death Gods at the very top like we are supposed to be! The righteous shall live, while the corrupt will die. ” He publicly declared for everyone to hear… and those on his side cheered at this.

However, He was caught off guard as The King suddenly let out a great energy blast, engulfing Kiraomi completely.

“ As seeing you were my dear brother in both our past life and this one, I don’t really want to kill you. So I’ll simply offer you an alterative… ” The king calmly spoke, as he watched his twin’s body slowly distort into an small package… until he was nothing but a white death note. “ Remain in that new body forever, until you truly repent and realize the errors of your ways. ”
With that, the battle was over in the blink of an eye.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Mikami Teru woke up, as it was morning. He rubbed his eyes and thought about the strange dream he had.
‘That was not a dream, Mikami.’
“ Hmm? ” He just mumbled, wondering what his god meant.
‘Now that we are bonded, the gates of our memories are now open and linked. Our memories are becoming interlinked… ’
That woke him up. “ So, that battle really did happen? And your brother is the King of the death gods? ”
‘Yes.’ Kira answered, suddenly sounding tired. ‘It’s such a shame when brothers don’t see eye to eye, don’t you think?‘
Mikami just simply nodded. ‘For what its’ worth… I think you did the right thing even if you ended up like this… I’ll do my best to help you, my god. I’d do anything to make it so that the corrupt are punished and that the good are rewarded forever. What good are the other theologies if they can’t even do that unless it’s in the afterlife?’
Kira mentally smiled. ‘I’m happy… just knowing I made the right choice bonding with you. So, my darling, what do you have planned for today?‘
Mikami Teru got out of bed. He then spoke. “ First Breakfast… and then it’s finding a way to take down L. ”
I must say, this is one of my favorite chapters. It was buzzing around in my head for a while, but I finally got it out. :)
