Chapter 16: Morning Coffee
~!~!~!~!~!~
Evening closed over the city of Tokyo, and pieces were carefully put into place on both sides of the board. The game was about to begin, and as darkness covered the city like a blanket, preparations were laid aside in favor of rest, the last opportunity for real relaxation on either side.
The members of the task force had already gone home for the evening by the time Light and Ryuzaki had settled into the living room of the apartment they shared. They were settled in to watch a movie that had been recently released. Light had cooked popcorn and already set out a soda for Ryuzaki and a beer for himself.
They sat together, almost shyly linking their hands as they watched. As the film progressed, they shifted closer, until they were all but cuddled up together -- thought Light would hardly have chosen that word to describe their situation. It was strangely comforting for him as he felt that warm body against his own and when the film was over, it was with great reluctance that they separated, prepared for bed, and went to their separate rooms.
It took over an hour for Light to fall asleep, his mind chasing after that warmth he'd lost when he'd gotten up. When he finally did fall asleep, it was to dreams of closeness with his once enemy. He slept with a smile on his face.
It was wiped away with a few short words the next morning.
"You're going outside today. A short walk, for you to begin adjusting. There are sandals near the main door for you -- it's quite warm out," Ryuzaki announced over breakfast. He was picking at his crepes, full of whipped cream and fruits.
Light frowned deeply, mulling over the information as he ate another spoonful of oatmeal before he replied. "And you're ordering me to do so, I suppose?"
Never before had Ryuzaki had to consider the emotional response to his orders, to his decisions. It took him a moment to compose a reasonable answer. "I am strongly suggesting it because it may become necessary for you to go outside during the course of this investigation. We need to move quickly and aggressively to corner the current Kira and put a stop to his murdering spree."
Sighing deeply, Light took another bite before he replied. "And what if I can't handle it?"
"I have confidence in you, Yagami-kun," Ryuzaki said softly. "It will not be easy, but I believe you will conquer this fear like all the others related to the onigiri."
That was enough to give Light a weak smile. He said nothing through the rest of breakfast, and they arrived on the main floor just a few moments before Soichiro. Mogi and Aizawa were a moment behind him, and Matsuda took another ten minutes.
Ryuzaki had finished preparing his broadcast, he packaged it up and asked Mogi to deliver it. Once Mogi was gone, his gaze shifted to Light, his eyebrow rising slightly.
A heavy sigh left Light's lips. "Fine."
"Perhaps you would like Watari to accompany you," Ryuzaki suggested.
Instead, Light turned his gaze to his father. "You want to go for a walk?"
Soichiro looked at his son for a long moment, then nodded his agreement. "Just a short one."
Ryuzaki watched the two head for the elevator, gnawing on his thumb as he considered the situation.
"What was that about?" Matsuda all but exploded once the elevator doors had closed.
"It is Toshio-kun's decision to share that information," Ryuzaki replied absently, then went back to his computer, considering each possible Kira on their lists of students.
The walk was a short, around the block affair that was supposed to be done as quickly and painlessly as possible. Light had slipped on a pair of fashionable men's sandals beneath his simple black outfit. He took a moment to make sure he was presentable before he reluctantly went for the door, his father just a step or two behind.
He closed his eyes tightly when he hit the pavement. He took a deep breath, felt the wind brushing against him gently. It was warmer here than on the top of the building, the wind was softer, the sun felt a little more... real. He let out the breath after a count of four and opened his eyes. It was early, but late enough that the rush of bodies in the streets was all but gone.
Slowly, Light turned the opposite direction from the one he had taken before the rape, before everything had come crashing down around him. He carefully kept track of every breath.
In, two, three, four.
Out, two, three, four.
He focused on breathing, on the steps he took, on the number of cement squares they'd traveled. He concentrated on his father's presence, telling himself that he was safe, that his father made it so.
In, two, three, four.
Out, two, three four.
Around a corner, down another block and to the second corner. He wasn't paying attention to the people they passed as they walked, but to the geography. The narrow passages between buildings that only bikes and pedestrians could get through. The small dumpster in a larger alleyway across the street. The little coffee shop on the corner.
He nearly ran right into the poor woman as she turned to gape.
"Father! What are you doing out here?"
Light looked up and froze.
"Sayu, I should ask the same thing," Soichiro replied, but he let a soft smile rise on his features. "I'm on an errand for work."
She gave a soft laugh. "I'm applying for internships, father. I just thought I'd grab a coffee before my next stop," and then her gaze fell onto Light. There was a long pause, then the recognition slid into her eyes. "Father, what is this? What's going on?"
Light looked at her, shifted his gaze to his father, then sighed. "I'll call Ryuzaki," he said softly, reaching into his pocket for the cell phone he'd found with the sandals.
"Yes, Toshio-kun?" Ryuzaki asked as he picked up.
"We've run into Yagami Sayu," Light said softly, glancing at his sister. She'd grown up into a beautiful woman, and a part of him was fiercely proud that she had turned out so well. She still had that girlish innocence, and he was glad that he had not managed to tarnish it. Yet.
"Let me speak with Yagami-san," Ryuzaki said with a frown.
Light handed over the telephone, giving Sayu a weak smile while his father gave a few curt 'yes' answers into the phone and hung up. Light took the phone back, looked at his father.
"Sayu, do you have a few moments? There's someone who would like to meet you," Soichiro said softly.
"Well, I guess so," she replied curiously, then looked at Light again. "I'm right, aren't I?"
"You'll know soon enough," Light sighed, turning and heading back the way they came, his father and sister at his side. He'd never felt quite so awkward with his own family before.

Spoon: Thank you so much! And I won't say either way about who the new Kira is.
Yuneek: Thank you! Though really, the rape recovery was never meant to be the meat of the story. It's just the plot device I was using to put L and Light on the same team against a new Kira. I just didn't see the point in using rape as a plot device without giving it the weight it deserved. I wanted to explore the emotional and mental changes in Light that justified what happens when the new Kira enters the scene. ^^ Back story is probably my favorite thing to find in a story. If I don't know the how and why of the transition, it just isn't real for me. I really probably could have made this into two separate fics, but then I'd have to come up with a new title. XD Law and Right, as a title, is significant to the Neo Kira arc that I've just started into.
