Chapter Sixteen
Sorry for the late chapter, etc.
I may have to repeat that I don't have a beta-reader so some parts may be not as refined as Id like it to be. Some parts might get a little erratic as I'm kind of fast-forwarding some parts of the story lines from The Movie, Anime and Manga. That aside, I hope that you will continue to enjoy the plot that I'm weaving now.

“ Thank you… ” A confused Mr. Yagami replied before hanging up.
“What’s going on?” Yagami Light asked.
L looked at Mr. Yagami as he was licking off the remnants of a strawberry cake off his plate.
“ My wife just told me that there was some lawyer at our house who wanted to talk to me about some case, but left. She gave me his phone number at the office, but the office said that he wasn’t on duty and had the day off.” Mr. Yagami answered.
“Yeah, that’s strange. Who would actually work when the office gave them the day off?” Matsuda wondered.
“ I would. ” Mogi answered. Matsuda gave Mogi an look of disbelief as to say “You’re kidding me? For real?”
“ Well, I’ll just call back later. ” Mr. Yagami shrugged.
The men got back to work, reviewing the past days and into Demegawa’s new TV show.
“ According to my information network, Demegawa apparently got inspired to do this TV show after he opened what appeared to be an suspicious package on his desk. Do you think that maybe Kira’s persuading him to do this? ” Shuichi Aizawa asked everyone.
L nodded. “Yes, that’s a very excellent lead. Please do find a way to revive the package that he got. We need to find out what was in that package, and if it confirms our suspicions…then hopefully we’ll be able to recover fingerprints and traces that could lead us to Kira. ”
“ Please leave that up to me. ” Ukita replied, “ I’ve got some friends who works in the business who could help me with that. ”
“ You have to be careful though… ” Light replied thoughtfully. “ After all, like L pointed out before, Demegawa tried to drag us out of our headquarters so that Kira could see our faces. Even if Demegawa has no idea who Kira is, he could still find a way to send security videos or photos of us directly to Kira.”
It was then they started forming several plans and assigned everyone their roles in order to lay the bait for Hitoshi Demegawa should they discover that he had connections with Kira. The whole team even went as far to attempt to think of any ways that it could backfire on them. After all if there was even the slightest possibility that it would put the whole team at risk, it would had been scrapped. after that stunt Demegawa had pulled the team didn’t really know what he was capable of.
All that talking and planning took up quite an fair amount of time, and it was late at night when everyone realized how much time had passed.
Everyone then agreed that it was time to rest up so that they could put the plan into action the next morning. With that, the team scattered away for the night.
As Light was following L into their bedroom, he couldn’t help but comment on the mental state of the task force. “ It’s amazing. ”
“ hmm? What is? ”
Light smiled as L turned to look at him. “You’d think that with what happened, and with the whole change in location everyone would be more prone to make mistakes due to anxiety. Yet the events themselves have only caused them to work harder than ever. Everyone, even Matsuda, seems to be performing nearly perfectly. To be honest, it’s inspiring me to do my best too.”
L then chewed the edge of his thumbnail in an thoughtful fashion. “So you’re saying that there was more to Demegawa’s stunt than finding out our names and faces? Yes, it does make sense that Kira would also attempt to scare us into doing something stupid. There’s an 50% chance of that being his primary goal.”
As L pondered over this possibility, Light went ahead and got changed for bed.
––––––––––-
The next day, Mikami was completely preoccupied with summoning up different various scenarios which all involved using Mr. Yagami or Light somehow to get at L’s real name.
He barely paid attention to his work, much to the annoyance of his superior.
He didn’t want to have to kill his trump cards now that he had them. He would only do so as his last resort. Besides, if he was to kill Light, he might lose an potential ally. The same outcome if he also killed Light’s father. After all, He couldn’t imagine Light being friendly with him if his father was killed by him. so that option was a last resort only if needed.
From what he remembered, Light had nearly the same viewpoint as Mikami did. Light really did believe that all criminals should be severely punished, or given the death penalty if they did an crime so horrendous that there could be no forgiveness or mercy.
So it stood to reason that Light would at least support Kira, even if he was too prideful for his own good. He might not make such a good body host, but he might just make an perfect loyal follower.
So there was that chance, that Light might kill L all on his own for him.
Mikami smiled at that thought.
Well, it was really a nice thought… but he couldn’t depend on Light. Even though Mikami felt slightly close to Light thanks to those borrowed memories, he still didn’t know Light intimately enough to know every move that he might do, much less every thought he had.
He sighed. He honestly thought he’d have it easy once he discovered Light’s face along with his father’s name and face. But he was still at square one.
‘You know…genius cannot be rushed. Just do what you normally do for now, and I’m sure an chance will present itself. ‘ Kira spoke.
Mikami relaxed at those words, and nodded. With that, he became more like his normal hardworking self, much to the relief of his superiors.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––-
The team didn’t really waste any time in discovering what was in the package sent to Demegawa.
“Just as we thought, Kira really did tell Demegawa to pull that stunt on live TV. Do you think this means that Kira’s getting desperate or impatient? ” Matsuda asked, just having to state the obvious for everyone else.
“Perhaps. And maybe not. ” L answered, chewing on his thumb as he became lost in thought.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get some fingerprints off it or even any fabrics. Kira really knew how to cover his tracks unlike what misa did. ” Ukita replied, and then added, “And the package was sent to the TV station from a delivery company by the name of FedEx, and there’s no return address or record of the person who hired them to deliver the package. Just the payment record of all the customers who sent in their packages on that day.”
“ Did you ask for a copy? That record may not be much to go on but maybe it contains an clue… ” Light asked.
“ Here it is. ” Mogi answered, handing it over.
L looked over Light’s shoulder as the pair started reading though the list. The package which had started so much trouble, was highlighted in yellow along with the customer number which they assigned every customer.
The customer number next to the offending package was listed as ‘F890’. Next to it was another separate series of numbers.
There was extra information, such as the fact that it had been but one of a series of package that the said person had them deliver. However those other packages were apparently sent to police stations and law companies for some reason.
Nothing seemed to be out of place… but then Light noticed something. “Hmm. This one customer seems to be the only one who has an F next to his number while the others don’t. Does the F mean something, or is those numbers simply computer–made?”
Mogi then looked into the rest of his files that he had. It was then he noticed something. “Ah, yes. It seems that they have an spefic way of listing every customer… the F means Frequent Customer, apparently. While the customers aren’t required to give their names, or ID they do have an card for those who uses the company more frequently than any other people might, Especially for those who run businesses. They also have an list of card numbers. I have this list here too as well.”
He handed that over to L, and this time it was Light who had to read over a shoulder to take a better look at the list. He also held out the customer list next to the card number list, for better comparison.
L nodded. “Yes, he’s definely on this card list. See the series of numbers next to ‘F890’, light? That’s his card number. ”
Mogi looked regretful. “ Unfortunately they didn’t give us the names of all the customers who owns those cards. Said that while they’d help aid in an police insvegestation, they wanted to protect their customers’ privacy. ”
Light then smirked. “ Fortunately for somebody like me, that’s not a problem… ”
The whole team then stared at him.
–––
Moments later, Light had already hacked his way into the Fedex company computers and pulled up all of the personal information of all the card members.
Mr. Yagami was still recovering from the slight shock that he got when Light had explained how he had hacked into the police files on a regular basis when he was following the Kira case, and so thus hacking into a simple company such as FedEx was a simple matter.
L had kept quiet that whole time, listening to Light. L could had as easily hacked his way into the computers too if he wanted, but he choose to let Light take the spot so that he could continue to observe Light’s growing boldness and odd behavior.
“ I got it! Apparently this card belongs to an law company by the name of anneichitsujo. So Kira works in the law business… or at least just works there in that company. ”
Matsuda raised one eyebrow. “ An lawyer killing off criminals? Isn’t he basically putting himself out of work then? ”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Mikami Teru took off his glasses, and then rubbed the bridge of his nose. Eyes closed, he just sighed.
It had been a very long day sorting though the files. With all the criminals dying, there wasn’t really much for him to do as an prosecutor. But to him it was all worth it.
It was then he realized something right out of the blue.
He hadn’t really though every action he had done in the past. He just now realized the consequence of using the same delivery company as his own company and using his company card to do so. He had been there under the pretense of delivering only his company packages, and had slipped in his own package alongside them.
He had been so careful not to leave any fingerprints, any hair fabrics or anything in or on his package that could lead to him that it didn’t occur to him that the package could be tracked back to the delivery company, and umliately back to him.
For all his planning, for all that plotting… he had over-thought to the point where he made such an obvious mistake! That was just so like of him though… he tended to do things without ayalnizing every action made and their possible consequences…. In fact he usually didn’t think of the consequences, all that seemed to matter to him was the results.
He then mentally cursed himself for that character defect.
Kira chuckled. “luckily for you, I know how to turn this little mistake into a blessing. In fact I knew of that oversight long before you did it, but allowed it to happen anyway…in the hopes that it would eventually lead our enemies right to our doorstep.”
Mikami almost became upset at this, but then claimed down. If his god choose not to tell Mikami, he must had an reason to do so. He would trust completely in his god… and plus, he now had no fear of death at all now that he was bonded with his god.
So it didn’t even matter if they found him and gave him the death penalty, did it? He would then just kill them afterwards in the afterlife. Really, it was a win-win situation no matter how he looked at it.
He then paused that train of logic to wonder whenever dying was going to be painful or not. That was the only part he wasn’t really looking forward to.
Hey, sorry for the super short chapter. ^^;; at least it feels short to me….
Been busy lately, etc… you get the picture.
I basically just made up the name of Mikami’s law firm… since I couldn’t find any information on where he worked. I just took the Japanese word out of my English to Japanese book. “ anneichitsujo ” literally means Law and order. Not very creative I know.. ^^;;
