Chapter 17: Atlas

The greetings were warm all around when Sayu, Soichiro and Light entered the first floor of the building. When they ascended to the floor the taskforce headquarters was stationed on, Sayu was introduced to Ryuzaki.

"As much as I am honored to meet you, Ryuzaki," Sayu said carefully, "I'd really like an explanation."

Ryuzaki turned his gaze to Light. "You may tell her as much or as little as you like, Yagami-kun."

As long as I tell her my name, Light thought, but nodded in agreement. He sighed deeply, lowering into a chair and rubbing his hands over his face, gathering his composure. This was, he mused, even harder than facing execution. "Sayu," he began, looking up to meet her eyes. "I was Kira."

There was a long silence while Sayu blinked in surprise, looked to her father and paled when he nodded. She swallowed heavily, looking at her brother once again and stiffening slightly. "Go on," she nearly squeaked, but her shoulders squared in determination.

"I was the Kira father and I were supposedly chasing down with the taskforce for so long. I had reached the point that I was on the verge of murdering Ryuzaki. I had just been cleared of suspicion. I stepped out," he couldn't help the soft, bitter laugh that left him, "I stepped out to buy an onigiri, at the Seven Eleven just a few blocks from here," he gestured in the general direction, dropping his gaze to his knees. "I never got there.

"When I was on my way, I was..." he grimaced a little. "I was caught by surprise, overpowered, and raped in an alley," his voice crackled and broke at the end of the sentence and he had to swallow heavily, his head lowered as he gathered his composure.

The rest of the task force was watching, grim faced and wide eyed.

The familiar hand that touched Light's shoulder gave him enough strength to keep going. "I came back here and tried to wash away the filth the man had left on me," in me. He shuddered softly. "The water was too hot, I spent too long in there and wound up passing out, hitting my head on the gods only know what," he sighed weakly, rubbing his hands over his face, wiping away the tears that were trying to gather.

"Ryuzaki found me. I was taken to the infirmary floor in this building, treated and given a full physical. When I woke up, I confessed to being Kira. I couldn't handle it anymore, I couldn't keep up the idea that I was a god, that I was fit to pass judgment on others, so I confessed, surrendered.

"Three weeks later, after I had been questioned to Ryuzaki's satisfaction, I was moved to America for execution. When I went into the execution room, I still thought I was going to die. I didn't know that Ryuzaki had doctored my death certificate so you and Mother wouldn't have to know. I didn't know he'd paid off the Americans to fake the execution.

"But he did," Light paused then, lifting his gaze to meet Sayu's again. "He's kept me with him ever since, overseeing my mental recovery from the rape and more importantly, making sure that I realized my mistakes as Kira. Making sure I understood that it was never right, never acceptable. That I was a murderer, nothing more and nothing less. Now, I do what little I can to atone for my crimes, to make the world a better place in the wake of the panic and fear I spread through it."

The silence seemed to last forever when Light was finally finished. Sayu looked at him, into his eyes, for a short eternity before she rose, walked to him, slapped him as hard as she could.

"How could you?!" she screamed at him. "You were supposed to be my big brother! The hero! The genius! How could you be the opposite of everything I ever knew about you?" but she was pulling him to her, hugging him, crying into his shoulder even as she was raging at him.

Carefully, Light curled his arms around her, held her. "I'm sorry, Sayu," he whispered, closing his eyes and letting her cry it out. There was nothing he could say, nothing he could do to make it better. It wasn't long before his own tears joined hers.

It was one thing to take responsibility and face the business end of a lethal injection. It was quite another to explain to your family, the people who'd been with you all your life, and to accept the reaction.

When Sayu pulled away, she wiped at Light's tears, sniffling down the rest of hers. "Light," she said softly, gave him a gentle squeeze, "as angry as I am, I've missed you horribly."

He managed a weak smile for her. "I couldn't exactly stop by for tea."

She laughed then, pulling a tissue from her purse and wiping away her tears, sniffling and smiling. "No, I suppose not. I could, once in a while, if you wanted."

"That's up to Ryuzaki, but I wouldn't mind," he replied with a soft smile, giving a deep sigh. He was hungry, exhausted, but felt quite a bit better, as if he'd dumped a pile of stones off his shoulders.

"What happened to him?" Sayu asked softly. "The man who..." she made a face.

"He was convicted over five years ago," Light replied softly. "I never cared to see how harsh his sentence was."

Sayu nodded softly, giving a quiet sigh and tucking her tissue back into her purse. She turned her attention to Ryuzaki. "Well, what do you think? Should I come by for tea once in a while?"

"Perhaps, but only after the current investigation has been concluded. A new Kira has appeared," Ryuzaki replied with a small shrug. "Until that has been finished, it would be too dangerous for you to be associated with this location any more than you already have been."

"Very well," she bowed deeply, then gave her brother a peck on the cheek. "I think that's my cue to leave," she went to Soichiro, gave him a quick hug before she turned and made her way to the stairs.

"Yagami Sayu-san," Ryuzaki called after her. "Obvious as it may be, I must ask that you speak to no one about this."

She paused at the top of the stairs, looking over her shoulder with a soft smile. "Of course," she smiled softly. "I wouldn't dream of putting my family in danger."

It was the carelessness with which she said it that sliced through Light's heart like nothing else. He sighed weakly, heading for the stairs that would take him up to the living quarters, muttering about taking a nap.

Spoon: Thanks again! I've slowed down pretty bad on this. The first thirteen chapters or so were all out within four days. I'm slowing down now, so I can pay more attention to the intricacies of the plot, because I really want to keep true to Death Note tradition and make it a real mind-screw. =3
