Rain
Chapter 18: Truth

Rain sighed as she strolled down the sidewalk. Ein following on his leash. Spike and the others were hunting some guy named Victor that had caused the tanker truck explosion and had used that bio weapon to kill all those people. She smiled as she looked out over the multitudes of Halloween decorations. It’d been a while since she’d been able to actually spend the time to look at what was going on in the world. Children laughed as they ran around in costume, their parents watching with smiling faces.

“It’s pretty, in a commercial way,” she said.

Ein looked up at the pregnant woman, his eyes conveying that he understood what she had said, but was not agreeing.

Rain rolled her eyes and scoffed. “Don’t give me that look. If you could see color, you’d agree with me.”

Ein yawned and gave her a look that said ‘yeah right.

“Hey! I acknowledge that you’re intelligent, and I feed you. Don’t knock my opinion down, you arrogant mutt.”

“You do realize that you’re talking with a dog?” a deep voice asked.

Rain turned, her blood frozen in her veins. “Holy fuck!”

“Been a while.”

Rain nodded as Ein barked and growled menacingly at the pale eyed man. His body poised to protect Rain at all costs. “I thought you agreed to leave me alone.”

“I have.”

“What do you want?” she asked.

“Many things, my dear.”

Rain raised an eyebrow and pulled a handgun from a bag in her hands, pointing it at the shadowed alley. “You seem to have a shadow,” she said.

Sith stepped forewords, her dark eyes fixed on the handgun in her face. “I could never surprise you.”

“Sith,” Rain gasped.

“Rain.”

Rain smiled softly. “You haven’t changed.”

Sith looked her old friend over. “You have.”

Rain nodded. “Extenuating circumstances. Why are you with him?”

“The Than,” Sith stated, her tone never changing.

Rain nodded. She understood. The Than had found out about Callisto. Vicious wasn’t being trusted any more. “So, you’re his babysitter?”

Sith’s lips twitched slightly.

Rain turned to Vicious. “What do you want from me?”

“I\'m sorry,” he said.

Rain laughed. “For what, be specific. You’ve done a lot of shit to me.”

“For everything,” he stated.

Rain eyed him for a moment. “What did you expect? For me to forgive you for all you did? To leap into your arms and say that I’m sorry for being a bitch and I love you?”

“No,” he said, his voice slightly pained.

Rain snorted. “It’s not Spike’s, by the way.”

His eyebrow’s jumped. “What?”

Rain seemed a bit dejected. “Spike’s not the father. Neither is Jet.”

Sith stiffened. Her body tensed. Rain looked to her old friend and nodded. Vicious paled. “You’re kidding me,” he gasped.

Rain’s eyes blazed silver as she glared at him. “You think I’m doing this to torture you? You’d think that. I didn’t plan this, hell I didn’t plan getting so fucking drunk that night that it happened! I can handle things myself. They’ll never know.”

“But I’ll know,” he said.

“Well, whoopty fucking doo! It doesn’t change anything.”

“You’re joking,” he said.

Rain’s eyes narrowed. “Do I look like I’m joking? Pregnant or not, I’ll kill you if I have to.”

Vicious nodded. “Fine.”

Rain took a deep breath. Her eyes shining with what could be tears. “Good,” she said. She then turned to Sith. “I’m sorry,” she apologized to the red haired woman.

Sith nodded in understanding. “I know why.”

Rain stiffened. “You know?”

Sith nodded.

“I’m surprised he’s still alive. Here, my mail address,” Rain said as she pressed a piece of paper into the assassin’s hand. “Good luck.”

Sith nodded curtly and watched as the stormy eyed woman cast a final, almost saddened, glance towards Vicious and then walked away, pulling the small Corgy behind her.

“I fucked up,” Vicious gasped as he leaned against the cool brick of a wall, his body sliding down as he stared out into space.

Sith’s lips tightened into a thin line, her eyes shimmering with untold emotion before returning to her usual deadpan look. “Yes, you did.”

Rain grumbled to herself as she stormed inside the ship. Ed was typing away on the computer. Spike seemed to be asleep on the couch. Jet was looking something over in the scanner.

“Hey guys,” she greeted, her voice a bit solemn as she watched Ein creep next to Ed.

Jet looked up a grin on his face. “Hey,” he greeted back as he stood to meet her. He then went serious. “What’s wrong?”

“Can Spike hear me?” she asked.

Jet looked to the sleeping brunette and then back to Rain. “I don’t think so.”

Rain sighed in relief. “I had a run in with Vicious.”

Spike was on his feet in seconds, his eyes and hands on her, examining her.

Rain raised an eyebrow. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Did he touch you? I swear if that bastard-“

Rain shoved Spike away, not really wanting to have any contact. “No, he didn’t touch me. He wanted to see if the rumors of my pregnancy were true.”

Spike looked tense, his eyes hardened. “What aren’t you saying?”

Rain wanted to disappear right then. She knew she would have to tell them eventually. She knew that it would blow up in her face. She also knew that they’d probably throw her out for it. But it had to be done. Lying was getting to her, it was making things harder than they needed to be. Not to mention that she hated lying, tried to avoid it at all costs. Even as Eve she had been honest. Rain sighed.

“You guys may want to sit,” she said. Jet’s eyebrows furrowed in concern while Spike’s gaze was filled with questions. She needed to tell them, she had to tell them. It was pertinent that she tell them. God she didn’t want to tell them.

“Hey guys, what’s up?” Faye’s voice broke into the room as she tossed an ugly hat onto the table and took a seat. “What’s wrong?” she asked as she noted the looks on everyone’s faces.

Rain shook her head and sat down on the couch. “I seriously think you guys should sit,” she said.

“Why?” Jet asked.

“Because neither of you are gonna like this news,” Rain said.

Both of them took a seat. Jet on a chair and Spike next to Rain and Faye on the couch.

“Niether of you are the father of my child,” Rain stated.

“What?” Jet gasped.

“What do you mean neither? You mean that Spike slept with you again?” Faye asked, her voice a little harsh.

“It was in the heat of the moment, I was upset and he comforted me. It led to sex,” Rain explained. “But that’s not why I needed you both to sit. Although, I’m sure I’m going to regret this, I need to tell you two guys the truth.”

“Wait, if Spike isn’t the father and I’m not… then who?” Jet asked.

“Vicious is.”
