Chapter Seventeen

I’m SO sorry about the late chapter! For some reason the Characters weren’t obeying me and such… and plus my plot bunny could only lead up me to this point before stopping… ^^;;

But now I’ve managed to feed my plot bunny and motivated it to go on… so everything‘s good now… or at least it should be.

I even tried to write an sex scene here, but I had to delete it since it was basically shitty writing about poor sex. I didn’t want to have to subject my readers to that.

Just imagine the hottest sex scene ever between the two of them, and this next scene just simply follows up after that. =P
=======================================================

A pair of lips gently nibbled at the nape of L’s neck.

“ Mmmmm… ” Light made an noise that sounded like what a human might sound if they actually purred.

Light’s arms were wrapped around L rather tightly, as if he was afraid that L might vanish into thin air.

L was feeling the afterglow of sex. A part of him felt satisfied and content even if at the same time he was uneasy still. He couldn’t help feeling uneasy, this was Light he was with after all. His prime suspect… who he was now having an relationship of sorts with.

It felt so unreal to him at the time when it started, and it still did. He would had never thought that he of all people would willingly get into an relationship like this, no matter how much he had certain thoughts about it. It was true that he was completely attracted to Light. But, why did Light have to be so damn perceptive about that? And what’s more, why couldn’t Light had been repulsed by the idea?

That would had made things easier, that was for sure. But most of all, he was upset at himself for not resisting it. He had meant to, but for some reason he couldn’t help but let it happen when Light wanted them to start having sex.

He knew that Light was only using the sex as an attempt to get him “ wrapped ” around Light’s finger as it was. But the way Light had looked at him… it left him voiceless, unable to say no to the young prodigy.

He shook his head in an vain attempt to shake free from the images of the events that had transpired just hours ago. He also tried to fight off the sleepy feeling that one gets after a long session of lovemaking, so that he could focus on his laptop. He felt slightly annoyed too, considering that Light’s lips were distracting him from his work too as well.

“ You know you’re not in the right state of mind now to even work… so why bother? ” Light asked, his breath feeling hot on L’s neck. “ Come sleep with me. ”

“ 60 percent chance that Light is attempting to slow down my hunt for Kira, which continues to make Light my prime suspect… ” L remarked out loud, knowing well enough that it would annoy Light.

Light knew what L was up to. “Tsk. Trying to bait me, Lawliet? You know well enough now that I’m not Kira. Considering that I just confessed to being an death note owner and that I plan on killing the real kira with my death note. ”

L Nodded. “ Even so, your actions are still suspect. Even if you’re not the first kira, you certainly seem to act like one of the Kiras. Tell me, how is killing all the other Kiras out there any different than killing the criminals on a regular basis like the first Kira? ”

Light scoffed. “ Of course it’s obvious. Once I’m done killing the other Kiras out there, there won’t any more threats to humanity. I’m going to burn all the death notes afterwards… to prevent any of this from happening again. That’s the big difference between me and them! ”

Lawliet’s eyes widened slightly. This was something Light had never told him, in terms of his plans. “ You would actually give up the power of the death note afterwards? You don’t feel even tempted to keep it for other purposes? ”

Light sighed, letting go of L much to his relief. He then laid on the bed, as L turned to look at him.

“Of course, I felt tempted to keep them for myself at first. After all, there’s so much power in those death notes. There’s always the chance that another bored shinigami out there could drop different death notes into the world again. Then I’d need those death notes that we have currently on hand to defeat other death note owners. ”

“ but….? ” L prodded the young man to go on.

“But no matter how I look at it… those notebooks, they’re basically the worst and most dangerous weapon that a human can wield right next to the atom bomb. I’m only human…I’ve got to die too one day in the future. When that happens, what happens to the other death notes? Other humans would get to them and this whole thing would just happen again. No… I’ve got to the other Kiras and make a example out of them. So that any future death note owners won’t get any ideas about becoming the next new god or whatever.”

L nodded. That did make some sense. However there was just one glaring detail that he didn’t agree with. “ But, I don’t agree with killing them. We have to imprison them first, present all the evidence against them. I’m sure nobody would then argue about giving them the death penalty afterwards. If you kill with the death note, you’re no better than they are. ”

Light gave an wry laugh. “Come on. What sane being would believe that an notebook did all this? Hell, there’s even times when I don’t even believe it myself the more I think about it. What if I’m just really psycho and this is just some delusional dream I’m having? That’s what I sometimes think. ”

Before L could comment, Light continued on with his train of thought.

“What if they declare us insane and let the Kiras out there go free based on how absurd it sounds? What if we don’t have enough solid evidence to keep them imprisoned forever?
There’s also the issue of what if they were unable to be caught and detained despite all the evidence? Face it, they need to be killed fast before they can do any more damage. I know that sounds like the same sort of logic that they use for killing criminals, but that’s just how it is. ”
L was quiet for a moment. L then laid down next to Light and wrapped his left hand with Light’s own right hand much to Light’s surprise. “ I promise you. I won’t let Kira get away, no matter what the cost. And I will do it my way, by doing it the right way… using the justice and judicial system that currently exists in the world. I have the most impost faith in it… even if it can be flawed at times. There won’t be a need for you to keep on using the death note at all. ”

Light almost looked like his old wide-eyed innocent self for a spilt second, as surprise was etched into his face at L’s promise. Then he just smiled. “ Will you also promise me, that in the case should the judicial system fail us, that you’ll let me use the death note to stop them? ”

“ ……. ” L chose not to answer, as he turned around so that his back was facing Light.

He felt the arms wrap around him again, as the blankets were pulled over him at the same time.

“ It’s okay if you don’t feel comfortable promising me that. I know you’ll realize that it’s the right thing to do, once the time comes. ” Light murmured in his ear, as he closed the laptop, which had been the only source of light in the dark bedroom.

With that, Light slept. L just laid there, staring into the darkness and lost in his own thoughts. Against his own will, he found himself drifting off to sleep…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
The days passed so fast, it was almost like a blur for the whole team, yet, everyone was able to remember those days with great detail. The days had been spent in an productive manner, as they gathered evidence and the likes of which led them to an specific person.
An lawyer by the name of Teru Mikami. A quiet, unassuming guy who always worked hard, and lived his life like clockwork. A supposedly predictable guy who would never hurt anybody.
But then again, that was always the profile of most serial killers–they were always the last person you’d expect to kill anybody. They were always the kind of guy or woman who you’d trust with your life, until you dug deeper into their lives and realized that there was more to them than what meets the eye.
And that was what everyone in the team did…they dug deep, and with enough time they were able to find out that Teru Mikami’s ideals matched exactly with that of Kira’s. They also discovered that he sometimes went on the air with the rest of the Kira followers to endorse the killing of criminals, and that they were going to pray for a better world.
That part almost didn’t make sense to L at all. After all, if he was the first Kira, then why the need to go on public TV to expose himself as an follower of Kira? Knowing well that L was after him, it would make sense to lay low, right?
Light then pointed out the obvious– that Kira supposedly had an God complex. So most likely he could be going on there as an attempt to get more followers, and possibly to preen himself at listening to the words of his followers in person. There was also the possibility that he might had gotten a little bit of a big head after Demegawa’s attack on the old headquarters.
Maybe this Kira thought that we were now stressed and unable to go on with this “battle ”, and now gained the confidence to go on TV personally.
Even if that counter point was a little bit of a stretch, it did make sense.
There was also the issue of the fact that this lawyer wasn’t stupid… he didn’t make any other moves publicly that could implicate him further of having any more connections to Kira.
So at this point the whole team was torn between wanting to overlook this lawyer just as an crazy follower, or investigating him further.
L then made the final decision one day. It didn’t matter if Teru Mikami was Kira or just his follower. However what was important here was the fact that he had ties to Kira one way or the other…and the team had to find out what his role in this whole thing was.
That meant….putting cameras in Mikami Teru’s house, of course.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Matsuda was the one who started to have second thoughts about the whole thing. He looked up at the new TVs which depicted all the rooms in Mikami’s house with an nervous expression.

“ I don’t now about this. It was one thing to put cameras into Chief’s home…at least one person of the whole family knew about it and consented to it. And Light here were able to forgive us for it! But this is a person who happens to be an LAWYER!! He didn’t consent to this at all, and I’m pretty sure he could definitely sue us for a lot of money if he found out about this. Plus, if he turns out to be innocent that could give him even more ammo to make us look bad publicly! ”

L dismissed his concerns with a wave of his hand. “ Its fine… if it comes to this, I’ll just pay him off. I do have a lot of money after all… ”

Light pointed to one of the TV screens. “ He’s coming in! ”

With that, everyone just ignored Matsuda as they watched the TV screens.
~~

Unlike what happened with Light, Mikami didn’t notice that anything was amiss when he went into his home.

He just whispered “ I’m home ” to nobody in particular, and took off his shoes at the front door. He went to the kitchen to get an drink, and then walked into his home office. He set down his soda can before opening his brief case.

Interestingly enough, the first thing he took out of his briefcase was an death note.
~~

“ I don’t believe it! It’s been only the first day and we already found something out! ” Matsuda gasped.

“ Shhhh!! ” an annoyed Ukita hushed the man, even though Mikami couldn’t hear them to start with.
~~

Mikami took off his jacket, and sat down to open his soda can. He drank a few sips from it, and then set it down. He sat back in his chair as relaxing for a few seconds.
“ Okay, time to get to work. ” He murmured to himself as he reached for an pen and a remote. Once the News were on, he set down the remote.

He took a few deep breaths as he opened his death note, and then he suddenly got up. He started writing wildly, impulsively screaming “ Delete. Delete! Delete! ” with every name he completed.

He kept on going for over 10 minutes straight like that, and he didn’t let up even when he felt his arms and hands start to get sore from all the movement. He then paused to catch his breath, and then continued again.

In fact his hidden audience was subjected to viewing this for an hour, and at the end of the hour Mikami finally took an break.

He walked into his bathroom to turn on the faucets, and stripped himself of his now sweaty clothes. He let out an contented sigh as he sat down into the tub and let the hot water soothe his sore muscles.
––––––––––––––––––––––

“Jeez… look at him! He’s looking like it’s nothing but exercise to him! Keeping on doing that much for so long…. He’s not human! ” Matsuda commented, with an look of disbelief.

“And he actually wrote down 150 names, all from different news from all over the world… for him to be able to write down that many without no problem, this certainly explains the sudden increase of deaths in the past months, doesn’t it? ” Light said as he looked at his charts, “In fact, it seems that ever since this whole thing started, the killing rate of Kira started at 10 criminals a day and then steadily climbed up to 20. Then it was 30, 40…until we finally arrive at 150 deaths a day. That is, if you don’t count the deaths by yotsuba. It’s almost as if he’s slowly increasing his stamina and patience for this sort of thing.”

“ So you’re saying that the fact that Kira’s kill rate at the start matched an university student’s schedule was simply just a coincidence? And this man might be actually the first Kira? ” Lawliet asked, his voice brimming with disbelief.

“ Well, maybe. It’s just a possibility. But If you will recall the facts, Mikami’s still a very new lawyer in this firm… it seems that nearly half an year ago when this first started, he was still just a law student. And then afterwards he quickly became an intern of this law firm. Thanks to his strong work ethics and strong drive, he was able to impress the higher ups enough to get a job as an prosecuting lawyer. He even has his own office, albeit very tiny and cramped. So if you look at the patterns and his schedule, it seems to all fit… ”

L then mentally ran though those facts about Mikami’s life, and then also ran the facts of Light’s life. He chewed on his thumb quietly, as he processed the two timelines and lives. Now that he thought of it, Mikami’s life in terms of patterns seemed to run nearly parallel to Light’s life, almost mirroring each other perfectly.

That just seemed too much of an coincidence above anything else. And L certainly did not believe in coincidences. Did Light choose Mikami in some way, knowing that Mikami would look like he was the first kira in so many ways? Or did Mikami actually choose Light, knowing that Light would make the perfect decoy to distract L thanks to the fact that Light fit the profile perfectly just like him?

It was certainly the truth that Mikami did match the profile of the original kira perfectly. At first, L simply thought Mikami was just nothing but a petty attempt at distraction by Kira or Light. Maybe that wasn’t the case at all. And if he really was the first kira, that meant that he was way more dangerous than L had originally thought.

Maybe there wasn’t some hidden plot here, and maybe L was just looking too deeply into it. but he doubted that could ever happen. L felt that he had never been wrong about anything, period. So if he was sure that there was some insidious plot here, there was.

He would just have to be wary, and discover who was the mastermind here. Kira would surely rear his ugly little head soon.
==============================================================

Well, back to feeding and pampering that plot bunny so that it becomes a little more cooperative with me.
