Law and Right

Chapter 18: Clueless

~!~!~!~!~!~

That evening, Light was once again up on the roof, laying on his back and gazing blankly up at the sky, as if it held the answers. Clouds were gathering, like a rain about to fall.

Ryuzaki came up, ten minutes into the storm, crouched next to Light for nearly ten minutes before he spoke. "I don't hear the bells."

"Neither do I," Light agreed, "but the rain... is peaceful."

Slowly, Ryuzaki stood, holding his hand out to Light.

Light accepted it, slowly rose to his feet and, before Ryuzaki could start walking, pulled him close. "Stay a little longer."

There was a pause. "All right."

Arms slid around, holding Ryuzaki close and the gesture was returned a moment later. "Your support, today, was just what I needed."

Ryuzaki's mind flashed back to the hand he'd laid on Light's shoulder as Kira confessed to his sister. "I wasn't certain it would be."

"You don't need to be," Light replied, pressing his forehead to Ryuzaki's. "You just need to try," he smiled, closed the distance between them.

The kiss was sweet, slow, and entirely chaste. In that moment, lightning struck the rod just across the roof.

Several meters away, shutters clicked, film captured the striking beauty of the moment, in all its glory.

They parted with shy smiles and Light retreated to the safety of the building, his arm hung over Ryuzaki's shoulder. He felt... a lot better, and it seemed Ryuzaki did, too, if the arm that held snuggly around Light's waist was anything to go by.

The days were filled with shuffling data, looking over the camera footage from the letter delivery yet again. Strange looks were occasionally shot at Light and Ryuzaki when they seemed to be a little closer than they should have been.

There were no comments, however, because Soichiro's glares were stronger yet.

They looked at the times of death, found nothing. They looked at the few that had left messages, decoded the exact message Light had sent at the beginning of his reign. Then they found another, more subtle message.

Decide

It was all in a single message, the first letter of each line. It made them both frown deeply, start shuffling theories, and come up empty again.

"We just need one more clue," Ryuzaki muttered softly. The next morning, they got it. Test results from the latest practice test for college entrance exams.

Ryuzaki went over them carefully and when he was done, he called up Watari. "When was the last time you visited the orphanage?"

There was a pause. "A month ago, to the day."

"Check on the whereabouts of all potential successors. Specifically, N and M," Ryuzaki ordered, then turned his gaze back to the list, narrowing his eyes. It just didn't add up.

"What's going on?" Light asked with a soft frown.

"A name that shouldn't exist any longer has been used," Ryuzaki replied with a frown. "This is most distressing. Whoever it is, seems to be targeting me specifically, and yet, the name appearing doesn't fit with that idea. It seems that perhaps whoever is doing this may be connected with the potential heirs to the L names."

Light took a look at the lists, cocking an eyebrow. "The European name on the Japanese lists, isn't it?" He considered for a moment. "Is it possible that this has... nothing to do with the case and is perhaps just the potential heirs trying to force you to choose?"

"To decide, Yagami-kun?" Ryuzaki asked, his gaze turning to the message that had been left for them. "I think not."

A moment later, Watari called back. "Both M and N have left the orphanage. M and the third candidate left first, and N did so a few days later. They all left within the last two weeks. We have been left a line of contact for N."

"Use it, and ask that he come to the headquarters here in Japan, please. Add his identification to the security system," Ryuzaki ordered smoothly.

"Of course," Watari replied and cut the connection.

"There is a high probability," Ryuzaki said softly, "that one of my heirs has become Kira."

A/N: Yes, a short chapter, and with lots of foreshadowing! =3 I just didn't want to get into the next plot-bit quite yet. This chapter is all about little pieces and clues falling onto the puzzle board. I don't want to solve any of them in the same chapter.

Tenshi Haku: Thank you, thank you! I'm glad Sayu came off the way I wanted her to. I'm really not quite sure how involved she's going to be in the plot, but I will drag her into it again at some point, for sure. In fact, part of her role has to do with this chapter!
