Chapter 19: L & N

~!~!~!~!~!~

Two days had passed since Near was asked to move into Ryuzaki's headquarters in Japan. When he walked through the main doors that morning, Light raised an eyebrow. He'd expected someone young, perhaps someone similar to L.

But he hadn't expected the pajamas. That, he supposed, was one of the quirks that came with being so intelligent. Some were socially inept like Ryuzaki, some wore pajamas like Near, and some were just sociopaths waiting to happen, like Light.

"So this is N?" Light asked, glancing over at Ryuzaki.

"Yes. N, Near. Those are his codenames," Ryuzaki replied, pressing his thumb to his lips. "He is not expecting to stay long, it seems."

"Not his real name, of course," Light replied, watching Near go through the security regimen. "Not planning to stay long because he brought nothing with him?"

"Yes. Unless he wishes to attain clearance first," Ryuzaki stood slowly, walking over towards the elevator that Near was traveling up in.

When the doors slid open, Near was twirling a bit of hair on his finger. He stepped into the room slowly, his gaze traveling over the occupants, then zeroing in on Ryuzaki. "L. I assume you have viewed the recent test score data."

"That is why you are here, Near-kun," Ryuzaki replied easily. "We will all be using aliases here."

"Of course," Near replied dismissively. "You must decide if I am Kira. Until that point and afterward, I intend to pursue Kira and bring him to Justice."

Light gave a soft snort, smirking faintly when Near's eyes settled upon him.

"This," Ryuzaki gestured to Light. "Is J. His alias is Toshio."

Then Ruzaki introduced the taskforce one by one. Soichiro was Kenshin, Matsuda was Daisuke, Aizawa was Isamu, and Mogi was Hayate.

Near shook hands all around with his limp grip and mild gaze. His attention then returned to Ryuzaki and Light, head tilted slightly. "There was a J at the orphanage. Has he been replaced?"

"No. Toshio-kun will not be replacing me as L, nor is he in any competition to do so," Ryuzaki replied.

Near's gaze shifted to Light. "Then it is still between Mello and I. And what will happen to you, Toshio-kun, when L dies?"

Light shrugged. "That, I suppose, will depend upon when, how, and why." The mild glare Ryuzaki leveled on him was not lost on him. Nor was it lost on Near.

Once again, Near's gaze slid over the entirety of the taskforce, his finger slipping to his hair, curling it again. "May I assume this is the same Kira taskforce as the previous?"

"Would you answer that question?" Ryuzaki asked dryly. "I suggest you arrange for your handler to send your things to Watari, who will then ensure they are integrated."

"After a thorough security check, of course," Near replied. "I would like to see the layout."

So, Ryuzaki took him to a console, brought up the floor plan of the main floors. The taskforce floor, the infirmary floor, the floor with the 'studio' apartments, the floor that Ryuzaki and Light lived on, and the roof's plan. He pointed out that Near would be using what was once Light's bedroom in the main apartment.

Now Light understood why all his things had been slowly disappearing.

"Toshio-kun and I share this bedroom," Ryuzaki pointed to the one that he did, indeed, sleep in.

Matsuda all but shrieked. "You're sleeping together?!" he managed to fall over a sofa and onto a table.

Light, Near and Ryuzaki all gazed blankly over at Matsuda.

"Is there a problem with that, Daisuke-san?" Ryuzaki asked mildly.

Soichiro cleared his throat softly. "I was not... aware of that particular development," he looked pointedly at his son.

"It was recent. On all counts, Kenshin-san," Light replied quietly, ducking his head slightly in a bow.

There was a long, tense silence.

"Well. It can't be helped," Soichiro replied gruffly.

Light sighed deeply, looking at Ryuzaki. "Could I speak with you privately for a moment?"

A moment of consideration and Ryuzaki nodded softly, guiding Light to the elevator and stepping in. He scanned his palm on the sensor and pressed the button for floor 13. The elevator rose and when they stepped out onto the floor, the elevator retreated. "There is no serveilance on this floor. Watari and I are the only ones with approved access. What is it, Yagami-kun?"

Light rubbed his face, sighed. "Ryuzaki, I did not imagine that my father would find out I am homosexual like that. I would have preferred a bit of warning so I could have told him myself."

"I considered that," Ryuzaki replied evenly, "but we did not say you were homosexual."

"It was strongly implied," Light closed his eyes tightly, took a deep breath. "My father is not stupid."

"I did not mean to imply such," Ryuzaki pressed his thumb to his mouth. "You are angry with me, Yagami-kun."

"Yes, but more frustrated than angry. I understand why you didn't think of it, but at the same time, I thought you might perhaps realize that as accepted as homosexuality is here in Japan, it's still not normal or desirable," Light said firmly, rubbing his forehead. "That wasn't the best way to break it to my father."

"I apologize, Yagami-kun. When this case is over, I will appraise you of all changes," Ryuzaki said softly.

"You," Light jerked as if he'd been hit. "I'm a suspect again?"

Ryuzaki sighed softly, looking away for a moment, then back into his eyes. "I know you are not able to be the current Kira, however... I cannot prove that you are not."

"Haven't I been under constant surveillance for the past six years?" Light shot back.

"There have been times when the monitors have not been watched," Ryuzaki replied softly. "I do not suspect you, but I cannot rule you out at this time."

Light sighed deeply. "I understand. I don't like it, but I understand," he said softly, reaching out to take Ryuzaki's hand, pressing a soft kiss to it. "Do things as you like, I will be with you, against the new Kira."

"You have already earned my trust, Yagami-kun, and against my better judgement." He leaned in close then, so that his lips were almost on Light's ear. "So I will tell you this. You know my given name. You have always known it."

"A letter," Light deadpanned, confused.

"It was the only sound my mother got out before she died, so I was given that letter as a name," Ryuzaki replied quietly.

Light's gaze rested on Ryuzaki's, remained steady. "I appreciate that," he replied softly, kissed his hand again. "Shall we go downstairs again?"

"Yes," Ryuzaki agreed, leading the way back to the elevator, his hand still curled around Light's.

They both felt a little foolish from the gesture, but neither was willing to let go, even though they were on camera once again.

There was rain. Bells were ringing, it was all he could hear as he stood up on the roof. Ryuzaki was there, looking... different. A bit younger, perhaps. The bells were so loud, he couldn't hear anything.

The taskforce headquarters. The massive bank of screens, Watari's letter in that bold, gothic print on the screen. Talk of testing the Death Note, the thirteen day rule.

Then he was dying. Light was holding him and Ryuzaki was dying, right there in his arms. The horror that swamped him drew a scream from his throat and he jerked upright with a gasp.

His gaze shifted, took in the darkness, his breath heaved in and out. The bed moved beside him and he sighed in relief as he found himself looking down into Ryuzaki's pale, living face.

"A nightmare, Toshio-kun?" he whispered.

"Yeah," Light agreed, reaching out to slide his hand into Ryuzaki's hair. It was surprisingly soft despite the snarls. "I'm all right. Go back to sleep."

"Only if you do," he yawned.

"I will," and Light was already laying down again, letting out another sigh. When he drew even with Ryuzaki, he leaned in to steal a soft kiss that left the detective blinking.

Ryuzaki smiled and lay down again. "Sleep well, Toshio-kun. I will be here."

In the small room Near was permitted to use, he gazed at his monitor with a soft frown. He had not expected that overly excitable man to be correct. This was going to be a problem.
