Chapter 1: Kana the Charmander

The road was long and arduous, from Pyrite to Phenac seemed like forever. It was nearly 6 days walk from where he started, and still there was nothing but desert before him. The heat and sun beat down on him, and the draining journey was beginning to take it’s toll. Hariel looked around at the scenery, and sighed a bit. There was nothing to shade him for miles in any direction. Maybe this was a bad idea, setting out on a journey with no supplies or anyone to accompany him. He trekked onward through the desert, only his thoughts to keep him company. Was his suicide really worth all this? Was this just some kind of trick from Jet’s conniving mind? Could this Kana really be worth the journey? Surely Jet wasn’t foolish enough to think anyone could replace his beloved Kana. That girl was his world, and she tore his heart apart. If she was so intent on dying, then how could you explain the night before? Was she so sadistic that she knew she was going to do it before they were joined as one? He sighed as he continued on, letting his mind dwell on the what-ifs and why-fors that haunted his memories. As day faded to night, Hariel seemed to see a light on the horizon. His journey was over, or maybe it was just beginning. He snuck past the guard at the gate of Phenac City, and gazed around at the beauty of the town. He smiled a bit as he walked beside the large fountain near the entrance, and made his way towards his goal. One of Cipher’s head scientists was here with their latest experiment. The newest of Cipher’s prized “shadow Pokemon”, Kana the Charmander. He grumbled a bit, as the town was huge and he had no idea where to start. That was, until he heard the screams.

“You stupid, worthless Pokemon! Nothing but a failure! How can you be called a shadow Pokemon? Where’s your grand power and ultimate destructive capabilities that I was promised by Greevil? I still do not see it. How could a failure like you ever show potential? Success is rewarded by food and love, but failure gets nothing but pain!” The man was screaming as he kicked her into a corner, bouncing her off the wall. He picked her up and choked her, fear in her eyes. He tossed her down and turned his back to her. “Fend for yourself, like you could catch any food... Weakling...” With that, he walked through the door, locking it behind him. Hariel looked at her battered body with tears in his eyes, watching as she pulled herself against a wall.

“T-Thank you master... I.... Love you too...” Hariel stared at her through the window and a rush of anger ran through his soul. Why did she put up with this? She deserved a better existence than this, but she clung to her master’s abusive hand. When he was sure the human was gone, he opened the window up a bit and slipped into the room silently. He slowly walked over to a cabinet in the room and rummaged through it to try and find something to clean up Kana, finally finding a bit of cloth that looked like it had rotted away from a towel into a rag. He walked over to a small, leaky pipe in the old, musty storeroom and dampened it before walking over to her. She looked like she was about to scream when she was quieted by a soft touch to her lips.

“Shh... It’s okay little one. Please, just let me tend to your wounds.” The Charmander nodded a bit and looked up into his eyes, shocked by the kindness. Hariel took the damp rag and wiped it over her, cleaning off the blood from her soft orange skin. He didn’t understand what he was doing, but he seemed drawn to her as he cleaned her wounds. There was something familiar about it, but he couldn’t quite place it. He sat down next to her, helping her sit up more.

“He’s so cruel to you Kana, why do you put up with it? You’d be better off without a master, than having to deal with his fists everyday. Don’t you think?” She glanced over at him weakly, her eyes struggling to stay open.

“He’s my master, and he loves me. He only does it because I’m weak and he needs to strengthen me... He loves me, that’s why he hurts me... I deserve it all... I...” Her response was cut off by a rush of fear going through her when she glanced at Hariel again. The aura around him glowed with such darkness and hatred that it was like a dark star, shining through the air. Hariel turned toward her and growled a bit as he spoke to her.

“You deserve so much better! Don’t be a fool, you don’t deserve any of it! You try your best, that’s all you can do! Kana, your strength is just hidden away, like mine. One day you’ll see that...” He stood and leaned down, gazing into her bright, innocent eyes and kissed her softly on the forehead. He smiled a bit to her as he slipped through the window again and disappeared. Kana sighed softly and laid down in the musty, cold room. Her head was full of thoughts now that frightened her. Who was that Machop, and why did he seem so interested in her? She felt it best not to dwell on it much, and closed her eyes to rest.

Meanwhile, Hariel was hard at work coming up with a plan. He searched around the town, trying to find out of some trainer even that he might be able to steal her away from her cruel master. It was as he snuck around that someone took notice of him. Hariel felt the eyes on him and stopped suddenly, turning quickly and throwing a punch forward. The man stumbled back a bit and looked down at the Machop.

“Calm down, little one. I mean you no harm. I know you don’t seem to trust me, but know that I am not your enemy Hariel... I know why you’re here, and who you are. I just want to help.” Hariel looked up at the man in shock. He knew his name, how was that possible? Hariel looked closer at the face and was shocked when it dawned on him who it was. This was Justy, the Pre-Gym leader! He looked around and Justy kneeled down, offering a hand.

“Come with me and I’ll get you all set up. We’re entering a tournament next week. The Realgam Coliseum Championships are next Friday, and anyone who’s a decent trainer is going to want show off their power. You know how vain the man is who trains Kana... Power is everything to Cipher. He will definitely be there, and so will Kana. That’s when you can grab her... Jet and I have it all worked out, you see?” Justy smilied down to Hariel and Hariel gave a smirk back as he shook the trainer’s hand. This was his chance to save her from a fate with her abusive trainer. Hariel followed Justy back to the gym and he sat, staring out the window. He knew what he had to do, but now the will to die was the last thing on his mind. He couldn’t help his Kana, and he lost her forever. He couldn’t let that happen to this one too... Not again.

“I failed one girl in my lifetime... I can’t fail this one. I swear by all that drives my soul that I’ll free you, Kana... You’ll see the life outside of pain soon enough.” Hariel sighed and laid back on the sill. His eyes closed and he slept.

***

Hariel thought the week was never going to end. Justy kept him busy all day, training or keeping taps on Cipher. He had very little free time, and what he did have was spent sleeping or outside Kana’s window. Truthfully, he seemed to spend more time watching Kana than sleeping. Before he took the mission, all that was on his mind was how his Kana had cheated him out of a life with her in it. Now, his every waking thought was his new charge. Her beauty was so familiar and comforting to him, and all he wanted was to be near her. Soon, Hariel would have his chance. The time for the tournament had finally come...
