Chapter Two
“You might well be a monster, but
you’re my friend as well. I don’t want you to go.” - Walter
“I HATE rain,” Alucard
grumbled as Seres moved about the kitchen helping Walter put plates away and
finish taking down the remaining decorations from the birthday party.
The party had gone
down well save from two things in Walters opinion. The first wasn’t as bad as
the second but still caused him discomfort, due to the party everyone now knew
just how old he really was. The second of the two occurrences was worse Alucard
hadn’t shown up. Instead the vampire had remained in his room, Walter mused
that was probably his fault. After the mission he had been immensely awkward
around his old friend and had even gone so far as to ignore the vampire
completely. So Alucard had sulked and hadn’t gone to the party. However a few days
had passed and things had calmed down and were beginning to return to normal,
Alucard returned from his very short lived sulk, Walter started relaxing around
his friend and was able to control bodily reactions to the memory of the
previous mission and Pip stopped teasing him about being old, mainly because
Alucard had threatened to accidentally eat him. Walter briefly wondered how you
could accidentally eat someone but shook the thoughts from his mind.
Then just as things
were starting to pick up the rain came, the rain had started sometime in the
early hours of the afternoon and Walter had waited for the coming of his
friend, no doubt the rain would put Alucard in a wonderful mood and the vampire
would want to tell him all about it. Walter sighed, mental sarcasm wasn’t quiet
as effective as verbal mainly because it was aimed at himself; grumbling to
himself he had hoped he would be wrong and the rain would go unnoticed by the
vampire or at least Alucard would hold onto a good mood. Unfortunately he was
right and the rain had completely destroyed any positive mood that might have
dwelt inside the vampire and had made him foul. After the sun had fallen from
the sky in a blaze of orange and red the vampire had crawled from his pit and
had proceeded to complain for the last twenty minuets.
“Stupid bloody . . .
we should construct a HUGE umbrella over London,”
the vampire mused suddenly
“It would block out
sunlight as well Alucard,” Walter nudged the vampire in the back as he walked
past
“Well then it really
would be perfect do you not think so?” Alucard grinned looking up at the
butler.
“Walter?” the voice of
Seres drew Walters attention “um . . . where do you want these?” she held up a
set of glasses, wobbled and fell. Walter closed his eyes waiting for the
unbelievably loud crash that was no doubt about to follow but he was proven
wrong. Cracking his eyes open a slit he discovered Alucard he rescued his
fledgling, Seres was currently mumbling thanks and blushing.
“Remind me to never
forget just how fast you can move,” Walter mumbled remembering just when the
vampire had shown speed in a slightly less constructive sort, he swallowed
uncomfortably just when he thought he’d gotten his mind of ‘that’ it came back
and hit him in the groin.
Alucard
blinked at him for a moment then yawning widely, giving the aged butler a
perfect view of in human dentistry, before practically falling back onto the
table. The scarlet clad vampire slumped forwards cushioning his head on his
arms. Walter smiled and shook his head slightly ignoring the pull in his chest.
Seres laughed quietly a sound like tiny bells and sat next to her master;
Alucard opened an eye and made a quiet sound like a growl. Walter blinked but
Seres just laughed. Walter continued to watch as Seres ignored the sound and
reached over separating Alucard’s hair into two sections. A gloved hand lazily
tried to shoo her away along with a whine, Seres smiled wider. Walter rolled
his eyes and watched as Seres contented herself by putting her masters hair into
bunches. She was a lot more comfortable around him now, Walter remembered a
time when just the sight of him would send her running for cover but at the
same time it was clear that she wanted to be near him. At first the butler
thought maybe the fledgling had a ‘thing’ for her master but Alucard tiredly
explained that it was just the master/fledgling bond. Alucard made one more feeble attempt to shoo his fledgling away before giving
up completely and instead stood.
“I’m
helping Walter,” he snapped at her, Seres sat and smiled up at him earning her
a loud growl which was cut short as Walter pushed plates into the vampire’s
arms
“These
live in the top furthest left hand cupboard,” he instructed, and then on
impulse reached over and tugged the one surviving bunch free, hand brushing the
vampire’s cheek. He suddenly blinked drawing back, he could have sworn for a
second Alucard had leaned into the touch, judging from Seres’ expression he
wasn’t the only surprised one. Swallowing again he turned back to the pot he’d
placed on the cooker a few minuets ago, the stew was starting to bubble nicely,
he concentrated hard on the brown mess wondering in a very focused way if he
should add more onions.
“What’s that?” Alucard
suddenly appeared over his shoulder and Walter jumped, acting on instinct this
time he whacked the vampire hard on the head with the wooden spoon he was using
to stir the stew. Alucard yelped and skidded backwards.
Walter sighed watching
the vampire rub his head in pretend pain mumbling about the abuse he was often
put through, and he smiled. He was relieved that Alucard hadn’t decided to sulk
after the other night’s mission. He hated it when the vampire just disappeared,
the first time when he’d disappeared willingly after Walter had turned down his
offer of immortality, refusing to share anything of himself with the mortal on
the grounds that Walter was a mortal and would not last forever. The second
time he’d disappeared had been a lot worse . . . Walter shivered remembering
when Helsing had locked Alucard away.
He understood why they
had done it. He knew Alucard had been slowly becoming a threat and thus
something had to be done, the fact he was being used in missions less and less
gave him much less of an opportunity to let of steam as it were and due to this
tension was building in the vampire. It didn’t take much to set him off when he
was like that. So yes Walter did understand but he still hadn’t liked it, he
didn’t like it even now; the idea of such a creature simply being abandoned in
a cell was worse then if they had killed him; a purgatory over death. No doubt
eventually the lack of sustenance would have killed Alucard but it would have
taken a lot longer than twenty years and would have been an awful wretched way
to die. He remembered how sad he had been losing what he considered his only
friend in this world; he remembered laughing at that thought how sad that a
man’s only friend was a blood sucking monster but the laughter had been forced.
“How . . . How long have you known?”
Walter asked, fear and grief welling up inside of him, he could feel heat
behind his eyes and knew he would cry. He swallowed loudly trying in vain to
stop the tears; tears would not impress his friend; Alucard would scoff at his
grief.
“Long enough Shinigami,” Alucard
breathed, and then to Walter’s surprise an ungloved thumb brushed a stray tear
that had escaped him away. Molten Ruby eyes did not rise to meet his as Walter
spoke.
“Do you,” he swallowed the lump in
his throat “do you know how long for?” Alucard shook his head eyes finally
rising to meet his and the vampire frowned.
“Don’t waste your tears on a
monster Shinigami,” the vampire opened his mouth to continue but was
interrupted by the young human male who practically threw himself at the
vampire. Arms wrapped around him and Walter hid his face against his friend’s
chest.
“You might well be a monster,”
Walter mumbled against his friend’s coat “but you’re my friend, I don’t want
you to go.” An arm wrapped around Walter’s shoulders, hand gripping him tightly
and the other hand slowly stroked down black hair.
“Well I hardly volunteered for
this,” Alucard smiled; amazed that Walter had given such a strong reaction. The
vampire had expected the boy to be somewhat sad, after all the vampire was the
only friend the boy had here, but he had not expected Walter to throw himself
at him and he had most defiantly not expected tears. Little perfect diamond
tears.
“Don’t go,” Walter drew back
“you’ve fought with Sir Hellsing on other things fight him on this!” Alucard
shook his head slowly; he knew he could not fight this. Walter glared angrily
at his friend “you fucking coward!” he yelled drawing back far enough to strike
at the vampire “you bloody useless coward!”
“Shinigami,” the word was spoken
firmly and Walter swallowed, fear overturning his grief at losing his best
friend.
He looked at the vampire fear
welling up inside of him: his friend looked angry. Then without warning lips
brushed against his, effectively banishing Walter’s fear; after a second’s hesitation
he moved his hands to tightly clasp at Alucard’s arms
holding on as if his life was in danger. Alucard’s mouth moved over his
own so very lightly, far lighter than Walter would have expected the vampire to
be capable of. It ignited fire inside of him, and he quivered as heat coursed through his veins, pumping hotly in his
blood. Then he felt the tip of a tongue, shockingly warm –at least
Hellsing had let him eat before his banishment-, tracing over the valley
between his lips. He gasped opening his mouth as goosebumps rose all over him
and his skin tingled.
Alucard slowed his ministrations as
if in question and Walter uncertain how to react, moved his lips curiously under his friend’s mouth.
The vampire purred at the willing action, making Walter freeze in surprise as a
clawed hand moved to cradle the back of his head holding them together, fingers
becoming buried in his hair. Another arm slid down and wrapped around his lower
back, hand settling on his hip. Walter felt himself smile, breathing deeply
through his nose he pressed firmer against the vampire.
A quiet moan escaped Alucard and he
tensed, his grip tightening, crushed their bodies together hard. Walter jerked
in surprise and clutched at his friend. Thrusting his tongue
against his with growing urgency. He explored, moving over teeth,
finding fangs safely held up but still razor sharp, he teased at them for a
moment making the vampire shiver pleasantly, before a sharp pain in his tongue
made him realise he’d cut himself. He’d never realised just how sharp those
things were. The blood caused a startling reaction, Alucard groaned loudly, a
sharp desperate sound and Walter found himself pushed back up against the wall;
held there under the weight of the vampire that was now grinding against him.
Alucard’s mouth moved from Walter’s and down over his throat, tracing the veins
that lay just under the skin, throbbing temptingly.
Walter arched when he felt fangs
scrape over his skin, fear and desire mingling dangerously inside of him making his blood burn. It shocked him when he realised
he, sort of, wanted the vampire to bite down, he wanted to see what Alucard
would do if he offered his blood to the immortal. If such a tiny cut on his
tongue could create such a powerful reaction he wondered what offering his
veins would cause the vampire to do. The mental image of Alucard biting down
and what that implied caused a lightening bolt to shoot straight to his groin
and he felt himself go rock hard. The heat inside him was intensifying
devouring him inside. He closed his eyes and felt his breath hitch, stuck in
his chest. His hands were clawing at Alucard’s back; he could almost smell the
blood and lust from the both of them. He could feel the vampire’s hands running
up and down his chest and over his waist. Light touches driving him mad, he
couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe. His chest felt like it was closing, the heat
intensifying, his skin was so tight.
Then it was stopping.
Alucard drew back a faint smudge of
blood on his lips; he smiled widely at Walter who leaned heavily against him
breathing hard.
“I’ve always wanted to do that,”
Alucard breathed against Walter’s ear making him shiver “don’t die before I get
out,” the vampire pulled back and turned to leave “don’t forget me.”
The
next time they saw each other Walter was an old man, but he had not died nor
had he forgotten.
“God
above this weather is boring,” Seres’ words drew him from the memory, Walter shook himself suddenly noting the expression
which were aimed at him from the vampires and bolted from the room.
This
was getting silly he thought as he leaned against the cool wall, letting the
cold sooth him bring his burning down a few degrees to a level he could
function at. As he cooled his mind kicked back in to gear, there was no way Alucard
could be serious now, no way, he was an old man now! Ancient tired and
unwanted, how could the vampire claim to want him? How could he even still look
at him after witnessing his youth? Walter wished he still had the confidence
from his youth; he could understand why the vampire had wanted him then he’d
been young, beautiful, powerful and on the edge of giving the vampire
everything, his blood, his body, his soul. He’d spent years drawing back from
that edge when Alucard had been imprisoned but now . . . since that kiss Walter
was teetering right on that edge again. It wouldn’t be so bad he thought if he
wasn’t withered and old; it didn’t matter that Alucard had claimed not to care,
it mattered to him, he couldn’t spend eternity this
old. He shook his head hard, it wasn’t even as if the
vampire was serious WHY WAS HE STILL THINKING ABOUT THIS!!
Pulling
away from the wall using his anger to push his confusion and frustration down
he entered the kitchen again. Alucard stood by the stew watching it as it
threatened to boil over, he looked vaguely interested and let out a
disappointed whine when Walter nudged him out of the way and took the stew off
the heat. Walter frowned at the vampire who from a few inches away pouted back
at him and it was only Seres’ cry of “I did it!” that stopped Walter suddenly
leaning forwards to close the distance.
“I
told you master I’ve really got the hang of moving through walls now,” Seres
sighed Alucard smirked and pulled back from Walter and moved to his fledgling,
for one instant Walter hated Seres.
“Yes
but can you do it with something?” Alucard asked, Seres frowned and Alucard
looked to Walter “do you have something frail?” he asked
Walter
blinked for a moment before he realised Alucard didn’t mean him and reached
into the fridge pulling out a single egg.
“Perfect
Shinigami!” Alucard purred giving the egg to Seres “now police girl watch,” he
took the egg back and walked through the door and back, the egg remained whole
and intact, “you have to extend your . . . aura to cover and protect the egg
while at the same time push it through the doorway. Hold it close to you it
will make it easier.” The vampire gave his fledgling back the egg and pushed
her at a wall. Seres went through leaving a smashed egg running down the
paintwork.
Half
an hour and six dozen eggs later Alucard was becoming bored, Seres was covered
in raw egg and Walter was highly amused. He sat with tea and a small plate of
biscuits watching as time and time again seres went through the wall but the egg
did not.
“At
least she’s trying,” Walter mused at the muffled cursing coming from the other
side of the door as Seres ran to get changed for the second time. Alucard
hummed, Walter flicked crumbs at him for a moment before Alucard lifted the
plate and dropped it in a little black portal, biscuits and all.
“Ha!”
the Vampire beamed then paused at Walters’s expression
“I
was thinking earlier vampire,” Walter sighed “of when you were locked away, I .
. .,” he was interrupted as his phone rang. After a few moments he hung up and
walked over lifting the tea he’d made a moment ago
“Well
Walter,” Alucard pressed
“Integra
wants her dinner,” Walter explained Alucard nodded and silently followed the
butler up stairs a look of confusion on his face.
“What
are you doing here?” Integra snapped as Alucard followed Walter into the
office, “you look like a lost puppy vampire,” Alucard shrugged and turned as
Seres ran in holding a new egg
“I
DID IT MASTER!” she yelled, Integra looked perplexed
“Alucard
is teaching her to take things with her when she sifts through solid objects,”
Walter explained and the three watched as Seres attempted to walk through
another wall.
The
egg exploded.
“Police
girl,” Alucard sighed as she came back “what will you ever do if something you
hold precious is in danger, something you care most about is about to be
destroyed and you can do nothing because your help will kill them!”
“Master,”
Seres started “what do you mean?” Alucard groaned aloud
“A
thousand million vampires suddenly run into this room with guns and grenades
and . . . . And pointy sticks,” he snapped. Then walked over and lifted Walter
who yelped and wrapped arms around the vampires neck
as they disappeared through the floor. Walter clung to the vampire as the world
span sickeningly and the vampire was the only solid thing left, absently he
felt Alucard’s hands tighten on him. Then they were back in Integra’s office
gently dropping down from the ceiling. Integra had a small smile on her face,
Alucard frowned at her
“You
hold Walter most precious,” she actually teased, Alucard blinked whether he was
more off footed by the remark or the fact it was Integra who was teasing him we
shall never know “well I was closer and probably lighter no offence Walter and
I am your master, yet you walked clear across the room filled with vampires
with pointy sticks to save Walter.” Alucard seemed to go very, very still
“I,”
he began then stopped “I . . . I am . . . I am going back to bed,” he snapped
before disappearing through the floor, Walter smiled to himself as the vampire
left in a flurry of embarrassment and blush.
Maybe
Alucard was serious after all.
