Chances

Heartbreaker

Summary: Apparently, Kaidoh has a habit of turning people down. He does it politely and as gently as he can, but what happens when someone won’t take no for an answer?
Disclaimer: I don’t own all these wonderful…underage…pretty boys. I just don’t. The guy who made Prince of tennis does…lucky bastard.
Warning: None for now
Author’s Note: I like Kaidoh. I like Inui. But I’m not going to write them as one just yet…

Chances

Yanagi sat in the café, staring off out of the window, the book in front of him unread. It was rare to be called out like this, but he enjoyed it none the less, even though he was nervous. He was early, but that still didn’t stop him front looking at his watch every five seconds.

However, just as he was about to glance again, the person he was waiting for showed up, looking slightly out of breath.

“Konnichiwa…”

Yanagi nodded, standing a bit when his friend took his seat. “Inui.”

A waitress came by and they ordered, Yanagi closing his book and tilting his head to the side a bit. “You wanted to see me, Doctor?”

Inui smiled and shook his head. “Please…I’m not much in the mood.”

“Hm.”

“My data was very wrong for once. He turned me down.”

“When?” Yanagi folded his hands.

“Three days, two hours, fifty-five minutes and seven seconds ago.”

The brunette didn’t know what to say. To be sure they were rivals as far as going to the nationals went, but when it came to matters like this, he had no idea what to say to his friend.

“You told me there was a chance he would turn you down.”

“Fifteen percent. Yes.” Inui stared at Yanagi from behind his glasses. “He doesn’t feel the same. I’ve spent some time with him for the past few days, trying to see if I calculated something wrong, or perhaps if I’d missed something like he has another acquaintance…but no.”

The drinks came and Yanagi took a sip of his. “You don’t just like him do you?”

“You just don’t like Sanada either.”

“Touché…”

They drank in silence until Inui spoke again. “He has other boys interested in him as well. From what I can tell there are lots of people interested in Kaidoh. He doesn’t seem to care though.”

“Maybe he just hasn’t met someone he likes.” Yanagi gave a small smile. “Why not try the persistent approach?”

Inui chuckled. “I’m not brave enough for that…I wish it were easier. I’m ready to give up. I thought about kissing him yesterday…but I didn’t.”

“Hm…I thought about kissing Sanada…but I didn’t want to be smacked.”

They both shared a laugh and Yanagi reached across the table and patted Inui’s hand. “Sadahara, there’s a large chance that there’s someone else out there for you. The data is just so large, I have narrowed down the numbers yet.”

Inui nodded. “A long time ago I thought you were going to be my boyfriend.”

Yanagi turned red. “ah…”

Inui chuckled and withdrew his hand. “Gotcha.”

Yanagi paused and then laughed with his friend. “The drinks are on you, just for that…”

Eiji blew hair out of his eyes and put his head on his fist. “Come to thin of it…Inui never said he was upset…do you really think we should try and force him and Kaidoh together/ Or maybe we could set Inui up with someone else?”

The boy snapped. “I know! What about sending him on a date with –Ow, nya!”

Eiji rubbed his cheek even though it had only been a tap. “What?”

“Pay attention…” the boy said, shifting in the bed under him. “Eiji-senpai…”

The boy gave a small chuckle and leaned down to place a chaste kiss on Echizen’s lips. “Don’t worry I’m still with you, nya. I was just wondering about Inui senpai…maybe we could all go to the movies and I can make Fuji come on to him…”

The green haired boy rolled his eyes and sat up. “I’m going home…” He got up and reached for his shirt.

“Nyaa!” Eiji panicked and rolled off the bed. “Ryoma-kun!” He hugged the boy’s legs, smiling. “If you help me come up with a plan for Inui we can have all the time we want?”

Echizen looked away, blushing. “Hn…”

“O chibiii!” he whined, standing up on his knees. “Kisu kisu nya?”

Echizen kissed him and Eiji laughed. “Hee, now let’s plan!”

Meanwhile across town, Tezuka, despite his conscience’s best tries, was thinking about Inui’s situation and if it could really affect the team. The glasses were taken off his face and he was brought out of his thoughts.

“Are you alright?” a soft voice asked.

“Yes…hai, Seiichi…”

“You don’t look alright…” the voice whispered in his ear. “I’m sorry I’m a burden…”

Tezuka shook his head. “You’re not a burden. I shouldn’t be thinking when I’m here with you.”

The delicate Rikkaidai captain came around to sit next to Tezuka, caressing his face and turning it to look at him. “You can tell me.”

“…apparently…one of the players on my team is a ‘heartbreaker’ and recently rejected another member of my team for a date. Now I’m worried about the welfare of both players, one more than the other and if this will affect us at nationals.”

Yukimura cupped Tezuka’s face and kissed him. “I wouldn’t worry. I’m sure you can leave something like this to your vice-captain.”

“hn.”

Oishi sneezed and walked along with Momo and Fuji. “Do you think we should get involved? It’s been three days. They look like they’re getting along.”

Fuji smiled. “Inui isn’t one to let his feelings be known. I’m sure he’s dealing with it –”

“No he isn’t!” Momo urged. “He’s probably crying himself to sleep at night! I’m tellin’ ya being rejected is harsh! I know! There was this girl in my class and –”

“Why don’t we just ask Inui what’s wrong?” Oishi interrupted.

Fuji shook his head. “That’s not how it’s done. Besides, maybe this is giving Inui good data about himself…”

The sun was going down and Inui paid for the drinks, still smiling after spending a good time with his friend. He bid farewell to Yanagi at the entrance to the café and headed off on his own, beginning to write more notes down.

“I didn’t know Yanagi liked Sanada so much…” he scribbled down some facts and made a note to go and observe the stoic boy more when he had time.

In the meantime he turned to a page and smiled. It appeared that Oshitari would be acting on some information he’d given him around this time.

Kaidoh swung the racket again, deciding that wrapping a thick towel around his racket was a good training method after all. The towel, though already soaked seemed to be getting heavier and Kaidoh took a breath and rested.

He waded back to shore, stopping when he realized someone was watching.

“You’ll never catch any fish like that.” The boy said, adjusting his glasses.

Kaidoh hissed. “No one asked your opinion Hyotei! Now get out of here.”

Oshitari just smirked and let the wind toss his hair. While he wasn’t a complete jackass like his captain, his particular charm was grating to other people’s nerves.

He came down the back, careful not to get any grass stains on his shoes or get his pants cuffs muddy. “I heard from someone that you like to train down here.”

“It’s none of your business.” Kaidoh gruffed, deciding that he wouldn’t just rest, he’d give it up for the day. He didn’t feel like putting up with this crap. Yesterday and the day before, he’d had to deal with Wakato coming by with his fangirls.

Wakato didn’t annoy him, but the fangirls did with their “It’s so muddy!” “Wakato let’s go!” “Wakato look at me!” “Hold my hand!” “Sign this!” “Who’s that?!” “why is he here?” and so on.

Maybe it would be a better idea to train someplace else for a little while.

“Hey! I’m talking to you!”

Kaidoh paid attention again, realizing Oshitari was trying to speak directly to him as opposed to at him.

“I asked if you wanted the privilege of going out with me?”

“Fwsssh…” he responded, putting his things away.

Oshitari stood there, watching him the entire time, trying to figure out what was up. Had Inui lied to him?

Kaidoh was almost finished packing his things when Oshitari spoke again.

“I get it, you think you’re better since your little team beat us back there, don’t you?”

Kaidoh ignored him and zipped his bag and put on his extra t-shirt. He shouldered the bag and walked off, leaving Oshitari by the bank.

“Hn…”

A few moments later, Wakato strolled down to the banks, puzzled when he didn’t see Kaidoh, just Oshitari, who was still staring after Kaidoh.

“Where’s Kaidoh?”

“He’s not going to talk to you anyway.”

“Huh?” the pretty boy held on to his hat bill. “He turn you down or something?”

Oshitari made fists and began climbing the bank. “He’s a snobbish ass. Just because he beat Hyotei he thinks that he can treat me like this?”

Oshitari’s vision started to blur and his eyes burned. “He’s worse than Atobe…” he whispered.

Wakato watched the other boy leave and scratched his head. “Snobbish?”

Kaidoh walked into class on Monday wondering why everyone was whispering and pointing in his general direction. He kept hearing words like “Heartbreaker” and “hurt Inui-senpai” and “Snobbish”.

He sat down at his desk and got his things out, deciding it would be better to ignore them. He didn’t have time for it.

A girl came up to him and smacked her hand down on his desk, catching his attention.

“Kaidoh-kun! I can’t believe how awful you are! I thought you were an okay guy until I heard you were stringing people along and breaking their hearts! I heard you even turned someone down just because they went to a school you’d beaten in the tournament!”

The mamushi blinked. “What? I don’t know what you’re –”

“I hate you!” the girl shrieked, leaving the room.

Several girls followed suit, the ones who were in his homeroom turned away from him with a huff and even some boys began giving him dirty looks. Kaidoh sat there wondering what the hell had happened over the weekend.

When practice came later that afternoon, even people on the tennis team were whispering. When he went into the club room, Eiji was there.

“I can’t believe you Kaidoh! I heard you made Oshitari cry!”

Kaidoh blinked. Oshitari? He stared at Eiji blankly.

“He goes to Hyotei and plays doubles, nya!” Eiji made a swinging motion and Kaidoh blinked again.

Oh…that guy by the river.

“That guy was talking smack Senpai. No one messes with Kaidoh Kaoru.”

Inui came in and Eiji gasped, looking between the two for signs of drama. Kaidoh gave Inui a bow and the Senpai waved, beginning to change. Kaidoh followed suit and Eiji rushed out, alerting those who mattered.

Kaidoh finished dressing. “Senpai…Oshitari came to the river. I made him cry?”

“That’s…what I heard. When he asked me for data, I told him he had a very low chance of getting you to say yes because you didn’t know him. I re-calculated the data based on our encounter and he had an even lower chance. I added in the fact that apparently, you turn down lots of people, a good ninety-nine point nine percent to be exact and well…no one really has a chance with you.”

The mamushi blushed a bit. “Are you angry with me Inui-senpai?”

“No. You have the right to say no.”

“Hn.”

They stared at each other.

“Senpai, how many people are outside of the door?”

Inui smiled, pushing up his glasses. “I’m not sure, but if they don’t leave they can all have my new concoction. I call it, Inui Grand Slam. Want to try?”

Kaidoh shivered and the sound of several feet running away was heard.

“I still like you Kaidoh.”

The boy nodded.

“Wakato should be making a move today. Are you going to the river?”

“I was…but…”

Inui nodded. “I’d go. When Wakato asked me about his chances, he dismissed me. He says, ‘Kaidoh is easy. Boy’s like that always want someone to take care of them’.”

Kaidoh scowled and Inui took out his notebook, writing something down. “His chances are…hm…”

“What?”

“I’ve never seen so many zeros after the decimal before…”
