Chillies and Chocolates
Like The Corners Of My Mind
Miaka
smiled a smile of pure joy and undiluted sadness. Her bottom lip began to
quiver and her smile disappeared, her eyes beginning to water as she rushed
from the doorway and flung herself at Tasuki, wrapping her arms around him and
gripping his shirt. “Tasuki.” She gasped out, “Tasuki, you…Baka.” She laughed
into his chest and held onto him.
Completely
stunned and bewildered that there was a girl he once knew, in front of him,
hugging him, he looked to Kouji in loss and confusion. The violet eyed boy just
smirked and gave him a nod of the head before walking out to the hallway.
“Miaka…you’re
here.” The ginger haired boy managed out, before he melted and let out a shaky
breath, wrapping his own strong arms around her, and resting his chin on her
hair and closed his eyes. It seemed so long ago to him…so foreign and strange.
Here, in this room, in his arms at the moment, was the girl who he’d sworn to
protect all those years ago and when she left, he really didn’t know what to
do. To return to the bandits or keep on helping people? Of course he chose the
latter, occasionally meeting up with his old friends. But other than that,
there was not much he had to do.
But
now that she was back, he’d keep his oath, the one he swore to, he’d keep Miaka
safe. And just like that, much of his old swirl came back to life and he pulled
away from her, looked into her questioning brown eyes and winked, smirking all
the while. “Missed me?” She laughed and nodded, sincerely. He grinned and
nodded, “It’s great to see you, come on, lets get you a cuppa coffee.”
The
three sat in the University’s café, near the canteen. Tasuki told her his story
of how he ended up here and about the bright Suzaku constellation he saw
earlier. They all knew that their meetings were not just coincidence. It was
fate, destiny if you will. It was the bond that all of them shared that linked
them over time, space and everything in between.
It
was their feelings for each other. Well…that was what Miaka thought. But she
wasn’t about to get too emotional and spiritual around them just yet, they’d
only just met…well, since those many years ago. So she set her mug down and
looked at them straight.
Clearing
her throat, she told them, “So, one thing’s for sure; this is not just
coincidence that we’re meeting is it? I mean, if what you said about Suzaku is
true, then…then he must want something. We’re not in the Universe of the Four
Gods anymore so I can’t be a Miko anymore. But you two seem to have kept your
abilities, especially you, Tasuki, still with the mark.”
The
two frowned and nodded, agreeing. “But after all this time…what does he want?”
Tasuki asked, taking an appreciative sip from his mug.
“Hmgh,
if you ask me that God is too high for his own good.” Kouji snorted, downing
his mug and ordering another. It was strange why cafes stayed open so late. The
Insomnia itself stayed open for twenty one hours
She
shook her head and took a drink from her cup, smiling all the while. Tasuki
almost had her spitting her drink out when he asked ever so suddenly, “How did
Kouji come across you anyway Miaka?”
A
slightly uncomfortable look appeared on the blue haired boy’s features as he
shared a worried glance with the brown eyed girl. “W-w-well, ahem you see…I was
walking home and…he was there and…we recognized each other and all. Yes.”
Tasuki
just stared at her, unbelieving. He raised a brow and said bluntly, “He was
mugging you wasn’t he?”
“Eh?
I thought he was going to…” she immediately stopped and covered her mouth,
seeing the amused looks on their faces. She blushed furiously and shook her
head. The other two didn’t really make her feel any more comfortable when they
started trying to hold in laughs, their eyes watering and their lips clamped
tightly. “I-I didn’t mean…”
But
she never got very far when the room was suddenly bombarded with hysterical
laughter, the two bandits clutching their stomachs and banging their feet on
the floor. “You pant thought that pant I…” Kouji managed out before he
burst out again. Miaka sat there with an embarrassed look, biting her tongue
and completely avoiding their eyes. Of course! How could she even think that he
wanted to rape her! Baka Miaka! He was
probably checking your clothes for a wallet or something! She thought
furiously, burying her face in her hands.
“He
may be a bandit, but he wouldn’t do that!”
Tasuki said slyly after he settled down.
Still
defiant, the girl looked up and told him sternly, “Well, I didn’t know that did
I?” Slumping back down, she sulked and pouted. Then, getting annoyed that Kouji
still hadn’t stopped laughing, she smacked him on the head shouting, “BAKA!
You’ll wet your pants if you keep laughing!” That got him quiet, although he
did let out a few snorts here and there. “It’s late,” she remarked, looking at
her watch, quite surprised.
“Mmmmmm
and you’re not going home this late. Come one, you can have my bed. I’ll take
the couch.” Tasuki said, leaving no room for an argument, but that didn’t stop
this stubborn girl.
“Huh?
But, I have to get home, I need to feed the cat, take the rubbish out and get
to stud-“
“Ah,
put a cork in it, you’re staying here, period.” Kouji said irately, pulling her
up. She glared at them both and then told them pointedly, “But you guys don’t
like women…and besides, I don’t have anything to sleep in, no toothbrush, no
hairbrush and WHOA HEY!” she screeched, as she was swung over forwards, finding
herself hanging over Tasuki’s shoulder.
“PUT
ME DOWN! HELP!! HELP!! I’M BEING KIDNAPPED!!!” she shouted all the way to the
room before being dumped onto a bouncy bed with an “oomph.” Glaring daggers up
at the snarky, annoying boys above her, she made a bolt for the door only to
have Kouji flip her back. “I will not be kept here out of my own free will!”
“Feh!
Like we care, here, you can wear this.” The violet eyed bandit threw her an
oversized shirt which she looked at doubtfully. “It’s Tasuki’s anyway. The
bathrooms’ that door over there.” He said, pointing over his shoulder. He
watched, satisfied as she sighed in defeat and trudged over to the bathroom,
slamming it behind her. A few minutes later and she was out, looking just as
tired as ever, eyes half closed, legs wobbly as if she was going to fall on
every step. The bandits watched in amusement as she muttered ‘goodnight’ before
falling under the covers and falling asleep.
“Hmm,
its going to be different having her back.” Kouji drawled with a grin.
The
ginger haired boy snorted and rolled his eyes. “Women always make things
complicated…” but casting another glance at her calm face, he smiled and
nodded, “Yup, it’ll be like old times again…if
we find the rest of the Suzaku Seishi.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The
next morning, Miaka woke and blinking her eyes to adjust to the darkness of the
room, she found herself still at the dorms, Tasuki curled up on a couch near
the balcony and Kouji in his own bed; both fast asleep. She smiled in
remembrance of their little meeting last night. Even though not all of the
usual seven were there, it was still a reunion and she had fun.
Looking
at the clock, she thanked the Gods that it was the weekend. And thinking back
again to what Tasuki said about finding the rest of the Suzaku Seven brought
another smile to her lips. It was like finding them all over again, and this
time, she’d enjoy every minute of it. She wasn’t about to take it for granted
this time and lose them. No, this time she’d
be the one to take care of them…she didn’t want anymore of them dying…not
like last time.
“Oi…what
are you doing up so early?”
“Eh?
Ah, Tasuki, you’re awake. I’ll go make breakfast.” She hopped off the bed and
headed to the little counter, sink and oven that served as a kitchen. It wasn’t
much but it took care of cooking. The amber eyed boy was still stretching on
the couch when Miaka handed him a plate of French toast and a serving of honey
and sugar, which he took thankfully. The other bandit however was still asleep,
huddled under the sheets.
Miaka
took one look at her own food and downed it all at sonic speed, smiling in
satisfaction when she was finished. Tasuki secretly grinned and thought to
himself, Same old Miaka…
“Mm,
what are you doing today?”
“How
should I know? Probably help Kouji with his students. I’ll have to drop by the
grocery store anyway and it’s near the place he trains. What about you?”
The
brown eyed girl thought for a moment before saying, “I want to find the rest of
them.”
A
sudden silence befell the two of them. Tasuki sighed and looked at the girl
with challenging eyes. “I know you do, Miaka. And we will…just not today.” The
girl nodded silently in sadness and turned to look at Kouji when he began to
stir. She smiled and called, “Good morning.” She was greeted back by a grunt
before he walked past and patted her on the head, heading for the third plate
of French toast.
“Well…I
should be going. The cat still needs to be fed. You should drop by for dinner
tonight if you can. I’ll just be ordering pizza anyway.” She got up and headed
to the bathroom to change.
The
other two bandits watched her and when the bathroom door had closed, they
looked at each other and sighed. “Hey…I’m all up for dinner at her place. But
do you think she’ll be alright by herself? I mean I think we kinda brought her
hopes up a little too high.”
Tasuki
looked at the violet eyed bandit and nodded with a scowl. “Of course she’d want
to find them. I should’ve- shit. I hate seeing her so down.”
“Hey,
no worries buddy. We’ll help her find ‘em. Like before remember? It’ll work.
Trust me.” The red head only snorted and said, “Keh! I trust too many people
already!”
“Exactly,
and have I ever let ya down?” the blue haired boy asked with a raised brow and
a quirk of a smile.
“Ara,
must I really answer that?” Tasuki asked bluntly.
Their
argument was stopped when Miaka came out, fully dressed and shaking her head
with amusement at the two. “You two will never change will you? Hmm, don’t.”
she said before grabbing her things. “So I’ll see you tonight?”
Tasuki
hesitated only a little before saying, “Mm, yeah. Tonight at around eight. Take
care.”
“That’s
fine. See you, bye Kouji.” And with that, she was gone again. The amber eyed
Seishi didn’t know what felt worse; the feeling that she was gone again, after
such a brief reunion, or the feeling that she was feeling bad inside for not
being able to find her friends as soon as possible. But he swore he’d help her
find them, and he would. They were his friends as well and he wasn’t about to
abandon them.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Meanwhile,
Miaka was headed back home. She had remembered to put her address on the
kitchen counter so that they knew where to find her. She too thought that it
was a rather awkward and short reunion, finding that things were uncomfortable
between the three. But she missed them already. Now, all she needed was to try
and pass the time until tonight. The morning was sunny, most of the frost from
last night melted away. She thought about what Tasuki and Kouji had promised
her; that they’d find her friends. She managed to find a little comfort in that
fact alone, but she only wished they could start sooner.
She
sighed and kept on walking, passing a bakery on the way. The smell was enough
to make her nose tingle and her mouth water. She remembered the only other
place that really made her mouth drip with flavour; Hotohori’s Palace. That
brought back rather depressing memories too…he had given her his heart. All the
love in the world was for her. But she couldn’t return in. But maybe, maybe if
Tamahome wasn’t the one she loved…Hotohori would most definitely have been…no.
She couldn’t think of such things. He died protecting her and he’d find some
way to repay him. Because deep down, she knew, even though he married, had a
son, and loved his wife, he loved Miaka in a different way…a deeper, pure,
untouched way. And it brought tears to her eyes and made her heart clench in
her chest.
She
pulled her collar higher and took a deep breath…a breath that hitched in her
throat. She smelled…not bad, but of someone. It was Tasuki’s shirt…Ohh smells just like him…so good. I just want to…
A sudden blush reddened pale cheeks as Miaka’s eyes widened. Ah-wh-
what am I thinking? No! Mentally, the embarrassed
girl slapped herself and stormed back to her apartment. It was a three storied
duplex, meaning she had two floors which were…basically falling apart. An old
woman lived in the duplex above her, ironically enough with twenty seven cats,
and the old man below who kept an old, loving greyhound who was clever enough
to turn on a record player.
In
the corner of her mind, she always had a feeling that the old man and woman
were once married…they always glared at each other and started fighting about
something or another when they bumped into each other. Shaking her head with a
laugh, she walked into the apartment and up the stairs. It was old, built when
there was a lot of Victorian influence, but it still had Japanese detail here
and there, all her furniture was Japanese, bought in garage sales and found in
the dumpsters, cleaned and painted over to look new.
Stepping
into the apartment brought the smell of paint and turpentine to her nose. She
liked art so much that she had began trying to paint
things herself and she found the scent rather comforting. Exhaling with a
smile, she called, “Boujo? Boujo!
Here cat!” A small meow came from the kitchen and a small bell tinkled as the
little white and ginger kitten came padding its feet on the ground towards her.
“Hello
dear… you ready for some breakfast?” she smiled and nipped into the kitchen to
prepare the kitten’s meal, humming to herself the whole time. When she was
done, the brown haired girl just sat in her favourite, old and shabby chair,
sinking into the soft material. “Sigh….Tasuki. It’s good to see you again…” She
smiled, thinking about him but blushed slightly when her earlier thoughts about
his smell made her feel. Hiding her Mona Lisa smile with her nimble fingers,
she giggled a little and hugged her pillow tighter.
She
then thought about taking a shower to clean herself of his scent but her mind
decided otherwise. She liked the smell; beer, some clean, fresh yet musky
cologne and mint…it was enough to make her nose tingle and her heart beat
faster…it was just one of those smells that you never got tired of. Her eyes
twinkled with laughter as she got up and walked up the stairs. However, she
barely got three steps before she stumbled over a few boxes, clothes and a
spoon and was sent tumbling down the stairs, landing…no to gracefully. “Ouch!
Ara, Miaka! You need to clean this dumpster!” she moaned dizzily to herself.
Getting
up on wobbly legs, she made a vow; “I shall clean this house until it
sparkles.” Or else I’ll totally embarrass
myself in front of Kouji and Tasuki… she thought despairingly, rubbing her
elbow which she hit on the way down.
So,
she set about to the hard task of clearing everything away, putting away every
paint tube she had, filing every single file she had, vacuuming everywhere she
could reach and scrubbing every single wooden step, asking the old lady above
for a good bottle full of detergent. She made sure that every book she had was
shelved away properly on the old wooden bookshelf which was coming apart due to
the huge weight over the many years of its life.
The
worst part though, was cleaning the bathroom. She had slipped in a pool or
water and fallen in the bucket of soap…not very appealing. By the time she was
done, her hands were all wrinkled and sore from scrubbing and wiping. A shower
was definitely good about now, and so, forgetting her earlier girly phase, she
hopped in the shower for a clean, not forgetting to place everything neatly
away afterwards.
A
few hours later, she had finished her grocery shopping, gotten ready for the
dinner (wearing only a pair of jeans and a long-sleeved red shirt, and bought
the pizzas. The usually gluttonous girl had refrained from taking a single
slice, let along finishing the two boxes, and all in all, she was quite proud
of herself. Smiling in satisfaction, she fell onto the couch for a rest which
was not too long after, disrupted by the ringing of the bell.
Gasping,
Miaka hopped up and looked at the time, “Wh-they’re early…pfft, that’s most
definitely not like them.” Rolling her eyes, she grinned at Boujo
and pressed the button near the door that opened the front door downstairs for
them. Letting out a cry of panic, she rushed to the kitchen, hoping she
remembered the coke. And when her front door bell rang, she let out another cry
and rushed to open it, panting by the time she managed to say,
“H-
hi, sorry I’m- Tas!” brown
eyes widened and the former Miko gasped in shock when all of a sudden, she was
pulled up against the man at the door in a kiss.
