He sucked in a breath of air and wailed, screaming out his misery and fury all in one soul-sucking noise. Another dragging breath, and he did it again, projecting his anguish into the room around him.
He was preparing his unused lungs for another round when he was suddenly silenced by another despondent wail. Blinking his eyes in the harsh light, he could make out the form of another like him, and then they were being held together, and he could touch this other him, and Mother, too, and there was food, and warmth, and suddenly he wasn't so wretched. Drinking hungrily, he eyed the other Him, and felt content.

The new mother smiled down at her twins with love shining in her eyes. They were everything she'd ever asked for in life; beautiful tufts of red hair adorned their heads, and when they blinked wide eyes at her, they reflected golden in the sun. "Oh, my babies," she whispered, crooning them a tune. "My beautiful boys."
"What are their names?" The doctor asked, clipboard in hand.
"I think... Kaworu, and Hikari." Mother said, pulling the names out of the air.
"Kaworu and Hikari Hitachiin, then?" She smiled.
"Yes. A family legend, you know. Better make it Kaoru and Hikaru."
Almost a hundred years ago, a pair of twins in the Hitachiin family had died together, forming a bond of love between them and spawning a family tradition. Every set of twins born to the family after them had born the names Hikaru and Kaoru in their honor.
