Sorrowed Requests
A/N: I am really glad that people are enjoying my story so far, so I can safely continue with my writing. Originally, this chapter was pretty short, so I’ve decided to expand on the encounter Vash and Trean have. I really like a part from later in the conversation, so I kept that as close to the original as possible. So read, review, and, as always: enjoy.
Chapter 2- Sorrowed Requests
Vash sat in alleyway not to far from the square contemplating the possibilities of his fast approaching encounter. He let the cold night air wash over him as he tried to sort this out. He had heard a story once, about a criminal that could walk through solid objects and even disappear; but it was more of an urban legend then anything. But seeing the woman in the bar vanish into thin air had him thinking that this myth may be real.
”Still,” he told himself. “I’ve been in this kind of situation before. For all I know, this could be some elaborate hoax in order to get my bounty.” He sighed and checked his gun for the hundredth time, making sure it was in working condition: a man like him couldn’t afford for his gun to malfunction.
The clock tower nearby began to toll after what seemed an eternity. Midnight, it was time to move. Quietly he got up, putting his beloved gun in its holster. He slowly walked into the square, eyeing every corner and nook. There was no sign of a trap, no ambush. But there was the black haired-haired beauty, sitting next to the fountain and gazing into the water illuminated by the moon. He got even closer, only to notice the woman was crying. His first instinct was to run over and wipe away her tears, but he knew better of it.
”I’m here as you asked; what is it you want from me?” Vash asked, trying to remain calm and serious. But she didn’t answer, and instead, just kept crying. Concerned, he stepped closer, perhaps she didn’t hear him?
”Hello, miss?”
This time, she mouthed something, but Vash could never get the hang of lip reading. Ever more concerned he finished walking over to her, putting his hand gently on her shoulder. “Are you alright?”
”Vash the Stampede, the Humanoid Typhoon, you are a legend.” She began, her head still hung. Vash was already becoming uneasy about this whole situation.
”I have heard stories of your acts and deeds, of your skill.” She paused for a moment. “I need your skill, tonight. I will pay you handsomely in exchange for you to kill me.” She slowly looked up to him. Just looking into her eyes, he could feel her sorrow. But why would such a beautiful woman wish to end her life? She could see the hesitation in his eyes.
”Please, she begged, you’re the only one that can get past my…” She hesitated for a moment. ”Gift.”
”Wait.” He said, trying to calm her down. “Who are you, and why do you want to die so badly?” His heart was softened by her tears, and his voice sounding a bit more shocked and concerned then he desired. But her response was only further hesitation.
”It would help me do my job better?” It was hard to lie to such a sorrowful woman, but he needed to know why she wanted to die so much. After a minute, she finally spoke.
”I am called Trean the Ghost.” She said between sobs. “I have a forty billion double dollar bounty on my head. And the reason I want to die is…because my life has been in vain.” She looked down again and sobbed. That was it; Vash couldn’t take seeing her cry anymore. He sat down next to her, and gently wrapped his arms around her, trying to calm her down.
So she is Trean the Ghost! The legend said that there was a woman that went by that name. Legend had it, that she was an unstoppable criminal that could walk through walls, and even turn invisible in the blink of an eye. To this day, the authorities would always blame unexplainable robberies on her, and they even put a bounty on her head. Vash always thought that the bounty was just a joke amongst the law; but, as he could now plainly tell, this legend was very real.
For quite a while she cried into his shoulder, but he wouldn’t let her go. Instead, he whispered soft words of encouragement to sooth her; and eventually, she stopped crying long enough to finish explaining herself.
“I have tried to do some good on this planet, to protect the innocent when they couldn’t protect themselves. But every time I try to help, I end up getting blamed as the source of the crime. For the longest time now, I have been running from the law. But now, I’ve gotten sick of it. I’m finally ready to go on to whatever fate lies before me in death.”
Her story fell too close to his own heart. In all his years, he had never heard a story that was so similar to his own. Deep inside him, he was smiling; because finally he truly wasn’t alone. Resolve settled in his very soul, and his actions were already decided.
He let her go from his arms, his hands settling on her shoulders. He waited until she looked at him, and he smiled. ”I’m afraid I cannot kill you, Miss Trean.”
”And why not?!” She yelled, pushing his hands away, her sadness beginning to return. “You’re Vash the Stampede, the bloodthirsty Humanoid Typhoon!”
“That may be so,” He answered her, still looking into her eyes. “But we both share the same misfortune of word-by-mouth. I’m not the blood-craving killer that the stories tell you.”
“How do I know that you aren’t lying to me?” Trean asked.
“If I was the Humanoid Typhoon the stories tell you, I would have killed you as soon as I saw you, then take the money with me when I leave the scene of the crime.” He was being brutally honest about all this, and she knew it.
”Still,” she sighed. “Why run? Why even try? Everything seems to bite me in the ass at the end.”
“That may be true,” he gently replied. “But good comes out of good. As long as you fight for love and peace, good comes from it; and if not for you, then for all the other innocent people on this planet. We must fight for the sake of the hope that with what we do, some good comes out of it in the end for those victims of injustice. ” He looked warmly at her, and he could clearly see the hope and understand in her eyes. The next thing he knew, he was being hugged by her, making his face turn a little red.
”Thank you, Vash,” she told him, hugging him tightly. “You’ve given me the will to live again.”
“Any time.” He moved to smile at her again, before they both looked up to the starry sky. In a matter of minutes, he could feel her against him, asleep. Grinning, he stood and scooped her up, carrying her in his arms back to the inn. In his heart, he secretly thanked Rem for all that she had done for him; especially, perhaps, for bringing this woman in crisis to him so he could save her from a foolish death. And on the way back to the inn, he almost tripped on a little black cat in his way.
A/N: I hope you guys enjoyed Chapter 2 of Nothing but Trouble. I am incredibly happy with how this chapter came out; though, I found the end to be a tad awkward. Please read and review! This helps me know if I should continue on with this story.
