Wolf at the Door
Well, I promised a quick update, didn't I? So here's the next chapter.
Title: A Second Bite
Chapter: Chapter two: Wolf at the Door
Author: Lithium Delusions
Rating: Mature (though this chapter is mostly worksafe-some bad language)
Characters: Ted, Drake & JJ (other characters in passing, Chief, Rose, Marty, Ryo & Dee)
Warnings and Disclaimers: Though this chapter is mostly safe for all concerned it does involve blood, shapeshifting, and rude language. Later chapters will also involve more of the same, plus explicit M/M/M sex scenes. Not for those with heart conditions, pregnant or nursing mothers or anyone under the age of 18. The surgeon general warns that this may be hazardous to your mental health. We do not own Fake or any of the characters, we just borrow them, run them through the wringer, and put them away damp. (not that anyone actually reads these things anyway)
JJ shoved Drake behind him as the transformation took Ted over. He collapsed and curled into a fetal ball as bones shifted and muscles popped. Thick red fur spread over his body like a wave and in seconds, there was a rangy russet wolf sprawled on the floor in the midst of Ted’s ruined clothing.
“Shit…” Drake breathed quietly.
The wolf that had moments ago been Ted whined softly and worried at the tatters of clothing that still clung in places. Then it caught sight of them and the change was instant. Ears went back, head lowered and the tail was firmly between his legs as Ted-wolf backed away with a sound that was half whimper, half snarl.
JJ kept his grip on Drake’s arm. “Don’t. He has to calm down on he’ll feel backed into a corner and attack.”
Ted-wolf was watching them warily; lips curled back from sharp teeth. Drake held out empty hands and spoke softly. “C’mon, Ted, relax. It’s me, Drake. You know me. We were rookies together, remember? I’m not going to hurt you.”
The wolf cocked his head, ears tipping forward to catch the sound of Drake’s voice. A confused whine came from his throat. Drake shook off JJ’s hand and knelt, offering a hand toward Ted. “See, you remember. You’re just confused and upset. It’s okay, really. You know us. You’ve worked with us every day for close to seven years now. We’re still the same people.”
Ted nervously ventured a step closer, whining softly. JJ froze, though he never took his eyes off him. Drake continued to croon reassurances to Ted, who inched closer, his posture somewhere between scared silly and poised for attack.
At last, Ted was close enough that Drake could feel the warmth of his breath on his skin. The wolf sniffed Drake’s outstretched hand and then butted his head against it. Drake grinned in relief and scratched behind his ears. Ted whined and shifted closer to Drake when JJ knelt, but didn’t snarl or try to run.
JJ shook his head in amazement at his partner. “I’m impressed, Drake. How did you know he wouldn’t attack you?”
Drake scratched Ted’s ruff, garnering a look of bliss from the wolf that had been their friend, and chuckled softly. “He’s still Ted. Still the same guy who upchucked the first time he saw a real body in the line of duty and still hates the sight of blood.”
JJ laughed softly. “Ted…” He caught the wolf’s eyes, but came no closer. “Listen to me. Take control of the wolf instincts and rein them in. Focus on changing back. Think of something human.”
Ted shivered all over, but obediently closed his eyes. Drake felt the fur ripple under his hands and recede like water, leaving bare skin in its wake. Hands that were still half-claw curled around Ted’s shoulders, leaving red welts as he shook and shuddered and his body shifted. A few moments later, Drake was cradling a shaking, swearing, naked and sweaty, but all too human form. Ted swore violently as he clung to Drake’s sleeves. “Shit! Fuck, that hurt!!”
JJ spoke softly. “It won’t the next time. Not if you don’t fight the change. You have control of the wolf now.”
Ted managed a glance at JJ, still clinging to Drake’s sleeves. “I-I do…?”
“You’re not growling anymore, are you?
Ted looked surprised. “I’m not!” He straightened up. “Hey, how come you don’t smell so creepy anymore?”
JJ gave him a sort of half-smile and tossed him a pair of sweats that had been draped over the back of the couch. Both he and Drake turned their backs as he shakily dragged them on to cover his nakedness. “Your nose is less sensitive in this form, but now you know I’m no threat, so I don’t set off your instincts anymore.”
“Huh.” Ted looked bemused, sinking back down to sit on the floor. He wasn’t sure his legs could hold him up. Drake caught him and eased him back down when his legs really did give out about halfway down. “How do you know all this?”
“I’ve hung out with a number of wolves over the years. I learned a few things.”
Ted really should have learned to keep his mouth shut, but that had never been one of his strong points. “Huh? Like what?”
JJ’s eyes darkened and he glanced sideways at Drake. “Like when it’s time to make a graceful exit… Drake, keep an eye on him, okay? I’ll be back in an hour, tops.”
Drake let go of Ted and rose to his feet. “JJ, dammit, I told you…”
JJ stepped closer and brushed Drake’s cheek with his fingers. “No. You’re still recovering. When you get your strength back, then… but not before.”
“What the hell?”
“You really should have Drake bandage those scratches you gave yourself.”
Ted craned his neck to see the sluggishly bleeding welts he had gouged in his shoulders. “Huh?” The blood clued him in to JJ’s sudden discomfort. “Oh, I get it… You’re hungry!”
JJ laughed softly. “You win, Ted-sempai. I’m hungry and right now you smell like a delicacy.”
Drake glanced between them, clearly not understanding everything. “What do you mean by delicacy, JJ?”
JJ chuffed another soft laugh, glancing up at Drake. “A bit like the difference between drinking apple juice and a fine wine. Both taste good, but the wine is intoxicating and full of delicate flavors the apple juice can never compare to.”
Ted was watching JJ with a wary, appraising look. “So you’re saying that I look like dinner?”
JJ stepped closer and Ted’s hackles rose, but he held his ground. “Less like dinner and more like a mouth-watering treat. It’s the wildness in the wolf, the taste of danger and untamed forests. The savor of something more than human.”
Ted stared in horrified fascination as JJ’s blue eyes deepened and darkened until it seemed like he was staring into the blue depths of the ocean. He was frozen and couldn’t even flinch as JJ trailed a fingertip over one of the scratches Ted had given himself. Blood tipped his slender finger, and eyes never leaving Ted’s, JJ lapped the blood off his finger like it was melted chocolate. Something rich and worth savoring every second of.
