Chapter 2
Ami Mizuno stretched her arms out over her head and sighed with relief. She had just finished her final project in advanced biology with only three weeks to go before the due date. She had cut that one close; she still had to study for the calculus test next week and read a few books for English before the end of the semester. Some called her an overachiever, but hey, Toudai didn’t take just anyone. And if she let herself slip there were a thousand other people waiting to take her place. The genius high school student saved the file, made sure to back it up, and then turned the monitor off on her computer. She brushed a strand of blue hair from her face and stood up. “Time for a sandwich, I’ve earned it.” She thought to herself.
Her dreams of bread and filling would have to wait however, as her sailor communicator chimed from the other side of the room. She turned to grab it with mild concern and hoped it wasn’t anything serious; life had been pretty quiet since the incident with Pharoh 90.
“Ami-chan?” Sailor Mars’s face appeared on the small digital screen.
“Whats wrong?” Ami asked wondering why her friend was transformed.
“Get the others and meet me at the temple.” She said quickly and then clicked off.
Ami was a little surprised at how brief the message was but quickly began to contact the other Sailor Senshi fearing that Mars was in trouble. She ran out of the house quickly making up an excuse for her mom.

“Where is she?” Sailor Moon asked for the tenth time.
“Hold on.” Mercury said behind an azure visor as she absorbed herself in her analysis, typing furiously on her computer. They had all gathered at the Hikawa Shrine but found it deserted. Rei’s grandfather and Yuichirou were out of town so they hadn’t expected to see them but Sailor Mars should have been here. Trusting her initial reservation, Sailor Mercury had been analyzing the message she had received.
Sailor Venus stood shivering, the cold December air blew her short skirt as she looked back and forth hoping to catch sight of their absent member, “She wouldn’t have just gone off on her own would she?”
Sailor Jupiter came back from her rounds and announced, “She’s not anywhere near by.”
“Guys, this is bad.” Mercury said with alarm. The group crowded in around her wanting an explanation. “I cross referenced Sailor Mars’s speech patterns and facial expressions with previous communications that were backed up on my computer and correlated them with the message I got earlier. I found a consistency ratio of less then .6”
Sailor Moon stared blankly at her friend as she tried to process what she had just said. “What does her tone of voice have to do with anything?” She moaned, visibly frustrated, “Where is Sailor Mars?”
“Well this high of a discrepancy made me dig deeper so I analyzed the code of the message and it turns out the programming is out of date. Luna and I updated the language about a year ago to 2.0 and a few months ago I patched it to take care of some bugs I had left in. This message seemed to follow 1.0 protocol.”
“Meaning?” Interrupted an impatient Sailor Jupiter.
“Meaning Sailor Mars’s communicator couldn’t have sent this. I personally updated all of our equipment and there is no reason why the programming would have rolled back to a previous version of the software.” Continued the Senshi of Water.
“So you’re saying it was a forgery?” Inquired Sailor Venus anxiously.
“Quite possibly. I can’t imagine how someone could have hacked our equipment though, the programming is totally unique. I didn’t base it on any previous OS.”
Sailor Moon didn’t even try to process that last statement as she became fearful for her friend. “So then where is Sailor Mars? Did someone steal her communicator?”
Mercury tried to explain, “I don’t think so. If they did the message would have had up to date protocol. It seems that someone was able to crack a previous version and sent out a fake message.”
“But why?” Inquired the blonde senshi whose long hair wasn’t rolled up into little balls.
“It must have been a diversion.” Sailor Mercury said slowly, but her mind was racing. “Give me one more minute.” She shifted her attention back to her computer and proceeded down a line of reasoning she strongly hoped was erroneous.
Sailor Moon began pacing across the stone groundwork of the shrine’s main entrance waiting for an explanation. She wanted her friend and she wanted her now. Jupiter walked over to a nearby torii gate and leaned against it. She hated this kind of down time and preferred a stand up fight. Sailor Venus resumed her silent vigil hoping that the situation would right itself before Ami could finish her analysis.
“I triangulated the original location of the message with my house and this shrine. The message came from a park about two kilometers from here.” Sailor Mercury stated as she finished typing.
“Then what are we waiting for?” cried an impatient Sailor Moon. The rest of the squad echoed her eager sentiment and the four of them took off in a flutter of short skirts and sailor collars.

Rounding the corner, the quartet arrived at their location a short time later. “That’s the place.” The Senshi of Water stated as they stopped just in front of the small urban playground. There was no sign of Sailor Mars or anything else for that matter. The park, like the Hikawa Shrine, was deserted. The sun was on its way down but it was still early enough in the day, it shouldn’t be empty. The Inner Senshi, minus one, proceeded forward slowly. Mercury pressed her right earring causing her transparent blue visor to appear over her face. The highly advanced processor quickly saw through the false image that obscured the park; however there was no change in its occupancy. There was, however, something hidden by the energy field, a school bag. “Quick!” she cried before she took off running. The others caught up quickly and they all crossed into the park.
The wind was still and none of the ambient noises from the surrounding streets seemed to penetrate into the park. But there was the acrid reek of burnt flesh filling the air. They all ran over to the school bag that lay on the ground. “That’s Rei’s!” Sailor Moon whimpered.
Mercury continued her analysis of the situation, plugging away at her minicomputer. “Guys, you’re not going to believe this. These energy signatures are from the Dark Kingdom.” The group let out a collective exclamation of shock.
The interrogation began, “How is that possible?” Demanded Jupiter.
“We beat them years ago!” Venus interjected.
Sailor Moon started shaking in aggravation, “I killed Beryl and Metallia!”
“I don’t know.” Responded the blue haired senshi, trying to stay calm. “I keep the energy signatures of all the enemies we’ve faced on file and each time a new one has appeared I’ve studied them hoping to find a weakness. The readings I’m getting from this force field and stray readings around the park definitely match those of the Dark Kingdom, specifically,” she paused unable to believe it herself, “Jaedite’s aura.”
Sailor Moon was nearly hysterical at this point, “We defeated Jaedite! You, me and Mars!” Tears of frustration began to well up in the blonde sailor’s eyes. Venus tried to comfort her but she tore away and clutched her missing friend’s bag and began to wail inconsolably.
