Meeting Fluke

“H-help me!”

Jackie instantly ran in the direction of the voice and found a man with brown hair in a white lab coat being chased around by a wild and angry looking Zigzagoon. The man saw her and waved to get her attention. Suddenly he found himself cornered at a tree, the Pokémon growling angrily at him.

He looked at her and shouted “Hello! You over there, please help me! In my bag there are some pokeballs! Please, you have to help me!” He was pointing to a large brown bag lying not too far from her, the top open slightly. Pokeballs? Did he want her to throw him one? Well she had to do something. Anxiously she looked inside the bag and saw three pokeballs. “Which one?” she asked, confused.

“Any one! Just grab one and use the Pokémon to fight!” he shouted.

Use one of the Pokémon! Her mom would kill her…but…this man might get hurt. Although it was odd that he couldn’t fight off this tiny Pokémon. Smirking slightly to herself she grabbed a poke ball.

“Ok then…here it goes.” She said, opening the ball like she had seen her father do. The ball grew in size and opened, a red beam of light shooting out. From the light a short green Pokémon stood there on two feet. It looked a lot like a lizard with a red belly and a large dark green tail. The two stared at each other for a moment, observing each other.

“What the heck is this thing?” She asked the man. By now the Zigzagoon was biting and tearing at his pants.

“A Treecko! Now use it to attack!” He shouted. “Please!”

“Oh, right.” She looked at the Treecko. “Well…you heard him. Feel like doing some fighting?” she asked, not really sure how to do this. The Treecko only rolled his eyes and silently waited for her command, though he was hardly happy about it. Jackie thought for a moment and yelled out “Hey mister! What kind of attacks does he know?”

“Pond and Leer!” He shouted, shaking his leg with the Zigzagoon attached to it. “Now will you please hurry up!”

“whatever.” She mumbled. “Ok, Pound sounds good….oh um, Treecko use Pound!”

Glad to finally be given a command the Treecko ran up at the Zigzagoon and hit it on its head with is tail, resulting in a very angry Zigzagoon. Furious the wild Pokémon charged at Treecko and ran into him, causing Treecko to stumble back. “Wow…this is so cool.” Jackie said with a grin. As the wild Pokémon once again ran at Treecko she snapped back to the fight. “Um, use one more pound?” What kind of Pokémon only knew two moves anyways? It seemed rather silly. That last attack seemed to do it though as the Zigzagoon fall to the ground, unconscious. She could help but grin. “My first Pokémon fight and I won!” The Treecko glared at her and she quickly corrected herself. “Oh, we won.”

Breathing heavily the man walked over to her. “Whew…Thank you so much. I was in the tall grass studying wild Pokémon when I was attacked. You saved me, thanks a lot.”

Jackie only shrugged and blushed. “Well it was nothing. I was glad to help.” She felt reluctant to return the Treecko in his ball. She really liked him even if he didn’t seem to.

“Oh, your Jackie!” the man said suddenly. “I’m professor Birch. Nice to meet you.’ He shook her hand as she asked. “And how did you know I was Jackie?”

“Well there are only two houses in our town and me and my family were living in one…”

“Ah…then it would be easy to know your neighbors.”

“Indeed…you can’t even really call it a town…why don’t we go back to my Lab? It’s more comfortable and safer than out here.”
She nodded and handed him back the pokeball. “Um…sure. Might as well.” That had been the most exciting thing she had ever done! No wonder people loved to battle Pokémon! Although she thought the Treecko would have a few more moves…but oh well. She followed professor Birch back to his lab, looking around the odd building. It was fairly large with several bookcases; some desks rather messily covered in papers and more books, several computers, more books…everywhere…and a large machine with a red dome top.

“So, Jackie.” Professor Birch started. “I’ve heard so much about you from your father.”

“Really? I’ve heard nothing about you.”

“I’ve heard that you don’t even have your own Pokémon yet.”

“Ok, you know what, it’s not that important. You people don’t have to constantly remind me.”

“But the way you battled earlier, you pulled it off with aplomb!”

“Oh…thanks! By the way, what the hell does aplomb mean?”

“I guess you have your father’s blood in your veins after all!”

“Thanks…so can you answer my question?”

“Oh, yes. As thanks for rescuing me, I’d like you to have the Treecko you used earlier.”

“No? Well the- wait what!” She said, her eyes widening in surprise. “Your just going to hand this Pokémon to me, without asking my parents if it’s ok…not to mention you’ll probably have to go through the trouble of getting another as I have heard these Pokémon are rather rare…”

Birth sighed and said “Well if you don’t want the Pokémon-“

“no, I’ll take it!’ she said eagerly, taking the pokeball. She had her first Pokémon! Forget her over protective mother, this was a dream come true!

Birch nodded. “I thought so. While you’re at it, why not give a nickname to that Treecko?”
She blinked, surprised. Her father had never given his Pokémon nicknames, but to her it sounded fun, a way to give her Pokémon a unique name. She thought for a moment then came up with an obvious question. “So…is my Pokémon a boy or a girl?”
“It’s a boy.” Birch said, sighing slightly. “You’re going to have to learn the differences on your own. In the wild certain Pokémon look different between the males and females. Some Pokémon don’t even have genders.”

“Ok ok, sorry.” She muttered. “I’ll call him…Fluke.” She said happily. “Because it was a Fluke that I got him.”
“Well, if you work hard with your Pokémon and gain more experience, I think you will make an extremely good Trainer. My kid Brendan is also studying Pokémon while helping me out. Jackie, don’t you think it might be a good idea to go see him?”

“No!” she said angrily, still remembering what he had said to her. “I don’t want to go see him…the asshole.” She muttered angrily to herself.

Professor Birch only chuckled. “Oh don’t be that way; you should go meet my kid. He really isn’t that bad.”

She sighed and frowned. “Fine, I’ll go and see him…but only because you gave me Fluke.”

“Great! Brendan should be happy to see you too. You can get him to teach you what it means to be a Trainer.”

She nearly exploded with rage at that point. She stormed out of the lab angrily, kicking a nearby plant. “Get him to teach me! That arrogant, stupid little…I bet I could teach him a thing or two!”

She walked back into the woods where she had saved professor Birch and looked around. “Wait…he didn’t even tell me where the hell his son is.” She sighed and looked around. “Well, he couldn’t have gone too far, maybe he is in the town up ahead.” The path was small and lead into the next town. She could even see it from where she was standing. It looked like the path went around and up this miniature cliff. The first thing she did was try to climb over it. “This will be easy.” She said with a grin as she clung onto a rock.

Thirty minutes later…

“Fuck!” she screamed, falling for the hundredth time. Ok, she wasn’t climbing it. That meant that she would have to go through some tall grass. Ok, that was fine. She defeated that Zigzagoon; she could beat whatever else was in that grass! But first...
“Come on out Fluke!”

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Fluke opened his eyes and looked around him. He was in that forest again. He was hoping to get a nice nap after that little spar. Hearing a female voice shout what he supposed was his new name (really though, Fluke? Made him sound like a mistake) he looked up at her. His Trainer. He had not been as excited as his siblings as they were told of what would happen to them. Being with a trainer sounded more like slavery. Well, he was his own Pokémon! No one, especially not this girl could order him around!

Stubbornly fluke sat on the ground, not bothering to walk with her. The girl blinked in confusion. “Um…come on Fluke. Let’s go to the next town…sometime now.” She said. Fluke only shook his head. “Teecko.” He said, or in a more translated version “Fuck off.”

She sighed and grabbed the pokeball, his prison. “I took you out of here because I thought you might like some air. Don’t make me put you back in.” The two glared at each other, neither one wanting to give in. It was a long staring contest, Pokémon vs. human…and Fluke looked away. But he remained where he was, refusing to move. He yelped in surprise when he was picked up, his Trainer actually having the nerve to hold him under her arm like some stuffed toy!
“Sorry Fluke, but you’re coming with me.”

As she walked through the grass Fluke yelled at her, trying to make her release him. Suddenly the heard a growl, but it had not come from him. A small gray dog-like Pokémon with yellow eyes stood in their way, clearly upset at the noise they were making. “So…Fluke you feel like doing some fighting?” she asked him, slightly nervous.
