The bright red light shot out of the ball, reviling a small orange colored Pokémon, with a little fire at the end of its tail. The Pokémon opened its blue eyes and looked up at her. “Charmander!” the little Pokémon quipped cheerfully. “Ah! So Charmander is your choice. You should raise it patiently.” Professor Oak said with a smile. The little guy certainly was energetic. He ran around Tammy excitedly, repeating the word Char over and over again.
“So, do you want to give a nickname to the little Charmander?” Oak asked. Tammy thought about it for a moment. “Sure! Um...is Charmander a boy or a girl?” Oak gave a little chuckle before replying “Boy.”
Tammy looked down at her Charmander, picking him up and holding him high. “Hm...I’ll call you…Champ, because you’re going to be a champion!”
“Oh that’s so lame.” Gary said, walking up to the remaining two balls. “I’ll take this one then!” Gary took the Squirtle and Tammy gave him a look. “Really? So you’re going to pick the water Pokémon?”
Gary smirked. “Yeah, so? Water is better than fire. No way am I picking a weak Pokémon.” Tammy only rolled her eyes. “Well now that you have your own Pokémon you should be able to reach the next town easily.”
“Thanks Professor.” Tammy said with a smile. She turned to leave as she heard Gary shout “Wait, Tammy! Let’s check out our Pokémon! Come on, I’ll take you on!” He opened his own Poké Ball, a little blue water turtle popping out. Tammy smirked and looked down at Champ. “What do you say pal? Feel up to your first battle?” The little fire Pokémon nodded, leaping out of her arms to face his opponent. “Char, Char!”
Oak sighed and said “Oh, for Pete’s sake…So pushy, as always. Tammy, you’ve never had a Pokémon battle before, have you?” Tammy looked over at him and said “Well considering this is my first Pokémon that would be a no.”
Oak ignored her sarcasm and continued. “Well a Pokémon battle is when Trainers pit their Pokémon against each other.”
“I said I have never had a Pokémon, not that I knew nothing about them.”
“The trainer that makes the other Trainer’s Pokémon faint wins.”
“I would have never guessed.”
“But rather than talking about it, you’ll learn more from experience. Try battling and see for yourself.”
“Well thank you.” Tammy said a little irritated that he had felt this needed explaining. Gary looked just as irritated. “Gramps, we know what we’re doing.” He growled. Tammy decided to start out. As both their Pokémon were low level they wouldn’t know many attacks and she had studied enough books to know what her Pokémon would know. “Ok Champ, use Scratch!” Champ charged with a determined look on his face. With his little claws he lashed out, striking Squirtle. But before either of them could celebrate Professor Oak started speaking once more.
“Inflicting damage on the foe is the key to any battle.”
“Thank you, I think I’ve got it!” Tammy snapped. She liked the Professor and all but did he feel like he needed to walk her through this step by step? This wasn’t that hard to figure out. She heard a yelp of pain from her own Pokémon. Squirtle had used Tackle on champ. Damn, she had to pay attention! “Come on Champ, another Scratch!” Again the blow landed. This was starting to feel repetitive. His only offensive attack was Scratch. He knew Growl as well but she felt it was kind of silly to use it. “Squirtle use Tail Whip!”
The little water Pokémon turned around and waved his tail at Champ. Both Pokémon and trainer looked confused. “Um…lame. Champ just keep on attacking him.” It went back and forth like this for a bit. The two Pokémon charging at each other recklessly until finally a Scratch from Champ caused the Squirtle to fall to the floor. He did not get back up. “Yes!” Tammy shouted, picking up Champ and hugging him tightly.
“What? Unbelievable!” Gary shouted in frustration. “I picked the wrong Pokémon.”
“Hm…Excellent.” Oak said with a little nod after observing them. “If you win, you earn prize money, and you Pokémon will grow! Battle other Trainers and your Pokémon strong!”
Garry sighed and handed over eighty dollars. “Okay, I’ll make my Pokémon battle to toughen it up! Tammy, Gramps, smell you later!” With that Gary returned Squirtle to his Poké Ball and walked out.
Tammy only shrugged. “Eh, sore loser. Well, thanks Professor for the Pokémon. I think I’m going to get started on my own adventure now.” She said with a grin. She ran out of there, Champ following close behind. Finally! Everything was perfect. She had her own Pokémon, was about to start on her adventure, what could go wrong!
And for the first time she was able to walk on Route 1 without any supervision. It felt great. Her first steps in a new world, new friends and new Pokémon!
Thirty minutes later…
“This is so boring!” Tammy shouted. “Where are the Pokémon? I thought tall grass was supposed to be crawling with these things!” Champ looked like he as having fun, investigating a fallen log. “Well at least someone is enjoying himself.” She mumbled. Suddenly a patch of grass rustled and a little purple rat walked out casually. Tammy immediately brightened up. “A Rattata…” she whispered. But she didn’t have anything to capture it with. Oh well, it would be good experience for Champ to battle with it.
“Ok Champ, let’s go!” Tammy said, pointing at the Rattata. There was only silence though. “Um…Champ?” She turned around and sighed. There he was, playing with three other Rattata’s. “I thought these Pokémon are supposed to be vicious and dangerous?” she mumbled to herself. That’s what everyone had always told her. Well now they were outnumbered. No way could Champ win against four Pokémon, and she doubted the other three would just sit around if they attacked one of their friends. But she couldn’t help but smile. Champ sure looked like he was having fun. Oh well, there would be more battles in the future she was sure.
She quickly learned that there was little else in this grass besides Rattata’s and Pidgey’s. By the time the two emerged at the end of Route 1 they were both tuckered out. She had been right. There had been quite a few Pokémon to battle there. Poor Champ was looking rather tired. Luckily Viridian City was right up ahead.
