A/N: On to chapter two! Some back story in this one for our main character.
Italics means a character is thinking to his/her self.
[Text in box] is when a Pokemon is speaking to their trainer.
The egg shook violently, it was about to hatch! Auren could barely contain his excitement; he was about to meet his first Pokemon. He still had no idea what it was, his father refused to even give him a hint. It didn’t matter now though, he’d know very soon. Auren grinned from ear to ear. His long, gray hair kept falling into his eyes, forcing him to push it aside so he wouldn't miss the appearance of the first cracks. Finally, the shell began to crack, and small chips began to fall off. Then, suddenly, it stopped. Auren’s heart stopped for a moment, the world seemed to freeze. Just as suddenly, the egg disintegrate in a brilliant flash of light.
“Elekid!” the Pokemon proudly proclaimed as it came into the world. Auren’s heart jumped into his throat, and he smiled so hard that it was almost painful. Before the newly hatched electric Pokemon could even get its bearings, Auren had rushed in to pull it into a hug. Suddenly, Auren’s body went stiff and he fell flat on his back. His body tensed as he fell, and he pulled his Elekid to the floor with him. His father, who had been watching as the egg hatched, couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Lesson one. Elekid have an ability know as static. It can cause paralysis on contact. It wouldn’t have triggered, but it seems you surprised our new friend a bit.” With that he walked over and dislodged the new born Pokemon. “See, it saw me coming and knew I wasn’t a threat. It subconsciously disabled the static ability. Give it a couple of minutes and the paralysis will wear off. Then, you can properly introduce yourself to your new friend. And I’m sure that,” at this, he eyed the Elekid up and down for a moment, “she will be much more friendly towards you. I’ll go ahead and warn you, if you stick your hand between her horns, you’ll receive a shock. That tip is free. Anything else, you’ll have to find out on your own.” Auren’s paralysis slowly faded, and as he regained control over his body he laughed.
“So, you started me off with an electric type, dad? How SHOCKING!” Auren laughed at his own corny joke, and his dad groaned. How many times had someone made that joke with him? Far too many, in his opinion. “You’re saying it’s a girl? Well, I’ll have to come up with a good name for her. She’ll evolve some day, and I don’t feel like calling her by her species name and then having to change what I call her along the way. I’ll think about it for a while, it has to be perfect!” At this he reached over and gave his new friend a hug, which the newborn cheerfully returned. “Elekid!” she said happily, reflecting the joy that Auren showed her.
Auren’s father walked away, content with his son’s reaction. He didn’t know how, but somehow an electric Pokemon was the perfect fit for his son. It might have had something to do with how energetic and unpredictable the boy was, much like the lightning his new friend would be able to create. Auren’s father looked up and closed his eyes, letting his thoughts wander. Well, my love, our son is ready to start his journey. He’s an amazing boy, and I wish you could have been around to watch him grow. He will be a trainer unlike almost any other. He’s compassionate, yet driven. Focused, yet carefree. Thank you so much for gifting me with son a wonderful son. As he opened his eyes, he realized tears had formed in them. He smiled and shook them off as he headed to his office. A breeder’s work was never done.
“What do you think of Zappy?” Auren asked his new Pokemon. So far, any name he had thought up had caused his Elekid to stare at him with lazy, narrowed eyes. “Ok, ok! I get it, you think it’s awful. Well, why don’t you tell me what you’d like to be named?” The Elekid continued to stare at him before quickly retorting with, “Ele, Elekid. Elekid, Ele, kid.” Auren didn’t understand anything she was trying to say, but he could somehow feel that she was telling him that he wouldn’t be able to understand any names she suggested. He sighed, and suddenly a name he actually liked popped into his mind. “How about Tonitrus?” At this, Elekid’s eyes opened wider, and she actually seemed to be considering what he’d said. “I can’t remember where I learned it, but it’s a word from an ancient language. It means thunder.” Elekid smiled at him, then nodded. The name was perfect, and both of them knew it. “That reminds me, I haven’t formally introduced myself. My name is Auren Cole, and I’m going to be your trainer. We’re going to travel the region, no, the world! And one day, we’re going to be the champions! We will also defeat evil wherever it may lurk! We’ll be like super heroes, Tonitrus!”
-----------------------
In a hotel in Veilstone, Auren slowly woke from his dream. He groaned and rubbed his temples to try to relieve the strange headache he had woken up with. As the fog of sleep cleared he took in his surroundings and remembered where he was. Yesterday’s events came rushing back, including the job and the meeting with his employer. Auren stood and walked over to a window, pushing the curtains aside to have sunlight come flooding into his room. The sun was already on it‘s decline, it was at least two o‘clock, possibly later. He turned and noticed his Pokemon wasn’t around, which wasn’t abnormal. She didn’t sleep as much as he did, and it wasn’t odd for her to get some distance from a town and train when they weren't on a schedule. He looked around for his Pokegear, hoping the information on his next mark had arrived. Auren thought back to the previous night, and remember his meeting with the man in an Arcean church.
Ugh, that must have been what brought those dreams about. That church really stirred up some old feelings. I wonder if Tonitrus felt the same way. She sure didn’t show it. Auren walked back over to the end table beside the bed and checked his Pokegear. No new messages. Great. That bastard always tells me I’ll receive information ‘within twenty-four hours’ just to send it twenty-three hours later. I’d really like to get going, the less time we spend here, the better. As he was brooding, Auren’s stomach rumbled, forcing him to forget his annoyance to think about food. I’d like to wait for her to get back, but if she doesn’t hurry it up I’m going to starve. A small smile played across his lips at the absurd thought of starving after less than a day without eating. The smile quickly disappeared as the thought brought up less pleasant memories from the past. Before Auren could begin to recollect thoughts of days passed, he heard someone quietly open the door to his room, then close it back.
“You don’t have attempt to be a ninja, I’m awake.” His earlier smile returned at the thought of his Pokemon attempting to be a ninja. While she was shorter than him at 5’11”, she weighed almost twice as much as him, nearly three hundred and thirty pounds. Add that to the fact that most of her body was bright yellow, and it was humorous to picture her trying to hide from an enemy in the dark. There was also the fact that she was almost always discharging electricity. That definitely wouldn’t help the sneakiness any. She could control it, of course, and when he thought about it Auren could remember a few times where she had snuck up on him. “Have a good workout?” As Auren spoke, the Electivire walked across the room nodding. As she neared the bed she had occupied, she fell face first into it in an exaggerated fashion. Auren laughed at her, knowing she was acting goofy. He waited for her to sit back up before he continued. “You know, you should have woken me up. I could use some training time myself.” The electric Pokemon stared at him, then rolled her eyes. Auren began laughing again, her red eyes looked ridiculous when she rolled them.
“Well I’m gonna go get clean, then we’ll go get something to eat if you want.” She nodded as Auren stood up and tried to stretch the last bit of sleep out of his body. He grabbed some clothes out of his travel pack before walking into the bathroom. As the door closed behind him, Tonitrus flipped on the room’s television. There were already reports of the house fire that she had caused the night before, and of two confirmed deaths. Investigators said they were trying to figure out what was going on, and that they had a few leads. She knew that was bullshit. They had no idea what had happened. They never did. As they news talked about the owner of the house, Ted Billings, and his one Pokemon, a Sceptile, Tonitrus closed her eyes and let a tear fall free.
In the bathroom, Auren had gotten the water to his preferred temperature - hot. He undressed and stepped inside, letting the water wash away all his thoughts, as well as a lot of sweat and dirt. He still felt kind of tired, so he rested his head on the shower wall for a moment…
-------------------------------
A bright light in the night sky…
Over the tree line…
He could make out the smoke even in the dark…
He ran as hard as he could, a second set of footsteps right behind him…
He came to a stop as he burst onto the clearing of his father’s breeder ranch to see it burning. Auren had been in the woods, training with his Elekid. It had been over a month since she had hatched, and the two had quickly become inseparable. It was routine for them to go out and spar a bit - provided she didn’t use her electricity on him - then return home a bit later to eat and such. It was most certainly not routine for them to return to find everything they knew burning. Auren took off running again, even though his lungs were burning from the sparring and the run back to the house.
“Dad! Dad, are you here?” Auren saw something to his right, and took off towards it. As he neared it, he realized it was his father’s Claydol. When he took note of the condition it was in, the contents in his stomach - mostly bile and acid - came to the surface. He turned and puked, disgusted by the mangled form of one of his father’s strongest Pokemon. It looked as though it had been brutally beaten, and there was a large puncture wound in it’s midsection. Another part of it seemed…melted. The carcass smelled horrendous, and Auren ran away from it before it made him sick once more. Auren ran to the front of the building, and then his whole world seemed to freeze, his heart ceased to beat.
Ampharos. Heracross. Crawdaunt. Abomasnow. And even…Gallade. They were all in very similar shape to Claydol. His father’s whole team, annihilated. Auren couldn’t believe it, refused to. That’s when he saw them. A man and a woman, standing side by side. In front of them, two Pokemon. A Nidoqueen and a Nidoking. Auren would later link the decay on his father’s Pokemon to the Poison attacks of those Pokemon, and the large holes in them…well he figured that out much more quickly. Then the man turned and saw him. They locked eyes for a minute before the Nidoking turned as well, and that’s when Auren noticed that it was holding something, no, someone lifeless in it’s grasp. Auren couldn’t move, didn’t even notice it as the man quickly made his was over. His system was in shock, he didn’t even realize the man was pinning him down, speaking to him. All he could think about was the Nidoking.
And what it held.
His father.
-------------------------------
“NO!!!” Auren jerked awake in the shower, losing his balance as he did so. He toppled backwards out and onto the floor, screaming the whole time, fighting the man that was holding him. As he came to his senses he realized that it was the shower curtain that was holding him - it had been yanked off as he fell.
In the seconds that had passed since Auren had jerked awake and yelled, his Pokemon had flown into action. Tonitrus came flying into the bathroom to find Auren lying on the floor, wide eyed and breathing heavily. She quickly surveyed the room and found nothing amiss. She had been plagued by an odd feeling since leaving the Chruch the night before, but she reasoned that the feeling spawned from being in the church itself and the memories that had been brought to the surface. What could have caused her trainer to react like this? The worry must have been apparent on her face, because before she could think of anything Auren spoke.
“I dozed off in the shower. I had a dream, no, a nightmare. It was…that day.” Auren took a deep breath to calm himself, he knew that now he was back in reality and that everything was fine. Nothing was going to hurt him while Tonitrus was near, he knew. She instilled a great sense of safety within him. He looked up and noticed she looked intense, ready for battle. He had to diffuse her or she’d be on edge all day, and he knew just how to do it. “Anyway, everything’s fine. By the way, I’m totally naked down here, can a guy get a bit of privacy?” He watched as she looked at him, and instantly saw the tension leave her to quickly be replaced by embarrassment…and was that a blush? He couldn’t be sure, as she left the room as quickly as she had entered, closing the door behind her. Auren almost smiled, but the foul feeling from his nightmare lingered. He didn’t even remember falling asleep. One minute he was standing in the hot shower, the next he was on the floor. Once again he had a headache, but he attributed it to the fall. Auren sighed before picking himself up and finishing his shower, leaving the curtain on the floor. He’d have to pay for a new one later. Once he finished, he bundled it up and tossed it into the shower, then used his towel to soak up the water on the floor.
Moments later, he stepped out of the bathroom to find his Electivire sitting in front of the television watching the news. “Ready to get something to eat?” She quickly stood and turned off the T.V, walking towards the door. “I’ll take that as a yes.” Auren collected a few of his things including his wallet and Pokegear, put on his shoes, then left the room, locking the door behind him.
A few moments after the lock clicked into place, a shadow moved through Auren’s room. One bright blue eye light up in the shadow, then closed again. The shadow quickly dropped through the floor, finally leaving the room empty.
-----------------------------
A few hours later Auren was absent mindedly walking down the streets of Veilstone. After eating, he had taken some time to visit the Game Corner. He had played a few rounds on the slots, but ultimately found them boring. He had never been very lucky, instead relying on skill and planning to get things done. Slot machines didn’t take either of those things into account. Put money in, pull lever, hope for the best, repeat. He didn’t understand how people could sit around and play for hours at a time.
“Well, what should we do now?” Auren asked absently. He hadn’t even been paying attention to where he was going, his mind unfocused. Dreaming was very uncommon for him these days, and to have two so quickly, both which dealt with his childhood…he didn’t like it. When he finally thought about where he was, he realized he was within sight of the Veilstone gym. Momentarily forgetting the dreams that had been plaguing him, his mind went back to when he had been a legitimate trainer, taking the league challenge. Each battle was stuck in his mind. Most of the gym leaders had heard of him before he even arrived. “Watch out for the trainer who uses only an Electabuzz.” It was something he heard often.
Auren remember the first time he had walked into the Veilstone Gym to ask for a match with Maylene, the leader at the time. It was a little over ten years ago, Auren had been thirteen at the time. He was surprised to find that Maylene was even younger than he was - twelve, if he remembered correctly. He had beaten her three Pokemon, Meditite, Machoke, and Lucario, with just his Electabuzz. Same as every gym battle before. The Lucario had given Tonitrus problems, but in the end she came out ahead. She was probably around level thirty five then. Auren couldn’t help but wonder if Maylene still led the fighting type gym, or if she would remember him after all these years. Surely not, with as many trainers as she probably battled since then.
“What do you say we stop by the gym? Just to see who leads it now?” Auren asked. The Electric Pokemon shrugged her indifference. They were just killing time anyway, he figured, so they might as well check it out. It was in the evening now, and since most gyms closed at night he knew it wouldn’t be long before Veilstone’s shut down for the day. Auren checked his Pokegear - 6:43 p.m. The gym would be open for another hour, at least. He continued his walk, now with purpose, towards the gym that looked exactly the same as it had ten years prior.
Veilstone City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Maylene
The Barefoot, Fighting Genius!
Auren smiled as he read the plaque on the front of the dojo turned gym. He remember the first time he had read it, trying to figure out if Maylene was a genius who fought, or a genius when it came to fighting. Lost in his thoughts of the past, Auren didn’t even notice it when someone walked up beside him.
“How do ya do, Mr. Cole?” A female voice jerked him from thoughts, making him jump slightly at being addressed unexpectedly, and by his last name no less. He turned to find a pink haired woman giggling at the fact that she had surprised him and caused him to jump. “Been a long time! I see ya’ve grown, but ya still look almost exactly the same. Ya even stand the same, with that hand in your pocket and your body relaxed, like you don’t have a care in the world.” The woman was smiling at him, then she stuck her hand out, wanting him to shake it.
“I didn’t expect to see you, and I really didn’t expect you to remember me, Maylene,” Auren said, extending his hand to shake hers. “I see you’ve grown, but you still look exactly the same, with your tight fitting fighter’s top and your baggy sweat pants,” Auren started mimicking her with a smirk on his face, “but now you’re not all covered in bandages like you were when I last saw you. So, that means you’ve ever relaxed in your training, or you’ve gotten good enough to escape those cuts and bruises you used to sport around.” When he finished, he knew it was the latter. Her body was still well honed, and she stood around 5‘6“. She had filled out a bit in the chest, requiring her breasts to be wrapped so she could wear that same blue fighter top. The form fitting top showed off her well toned stomach and abs, and Auren found that quite appealing. He couldn’t tell about anything below the waste, she still wore those gray sweat pants and they did a good job of masking her legs. He looked further down to find she was, of course, barefoot. “And I see you still never figured out what shoes were.”
“Oh, I figured out what they were,” she started, “they’re things made for sissies with soft feet!” Maylene’s smile remained as she let go of Auren’s hand while noting his strong, but not crushing, handshake. “Watch out for the boy with the Electabuzz,” she said, repeating his earlier thoughts, “well, looks like that saying needs to be changed. I see she has evolved into an Electivire, and that ya still refuse to keep her in a ball. She looks really strong, now! I’d love to see what she could do. Hey, if you’re done checking me out, why not come in and tell me about your journey! I have some free time, and I always like to hear about trainer’s travels.” She finished. Auren’s eyes widened a bit, and he felt his face heat up a bit while he picked a very interesting place on the wall to stare at for a moment. She had noticed when he had quickly scoped out her body.
How did she catch that, I thought I had been rather discreet. I definitely made it look like I was simply looking down to look at her feet. Maybe she is just a genius who fights. When he was done being embarrassed, he looked back at her face to see her still smiling widely, enjoying making him squirm a bit. “Well, I have time to waste, I guess,” he shrugged before continuing, “but are you sure you have time?”
“Yeah, I don’t have any more battles scheduled for today, so come on, I insist!” She reached over and grabbed him by the arm, and practically jerked him inside. He had almost forgotten how strong she was, being a Fighting type trainer. Well, at least he had found something to take up time. Tonitrus followed them inside, interested in the discussion the two would have.
-------------------------------
“So, you managed to collect all eight Sinnoh badges using just an Electabuzz? I bet you walked in and out of Crasher Wake’s gym, but what about Byron, or even Volkner? Those two had to offer some challenge!” Maylene was recounting his tale of conquest, how he had earned enough badges to challenge the Elite Four.
“Well, by the time I got to Byron, Electabuzz knew Fire Punch, so we kind of coasted through that one. Volkner was a different story. We simply had to overpower him, which wasn’t as difficult as it sounds. Since I had only really been using one Pokemon for my entire journey, she was already close to level 70. Because of how quickly it could move, his Luxray was a bit of an annoying fight, but other than that is wasn’t too bad. Did you know he had an Octillery? That particular part of the battle was pretty much handed to me.” Auren laughed a bit at the thought of the Electric gym leader tossing out a water Pokemon.
“Oh yeah, I’ve heard he uses that from time to time,” Maylene said, again with a huge smile on her face, “though I’m not sure why he would have tried it against ya. By then all of the gym leaders knew about ya. You’re the only person I’ve ever known who beat everyone you battled using only a single teammate. So, what happened after that? I know I never heard of ya becoming the Champion. In fact, ya just sort of vanished if I remember correctly. Ya went from being feared by Gym leaders and trainers alike to invisible in no time flat.”
“Yeah, I guess I did. Well, I went and challenged the Elite four. After a pretty intense battle, I came out victorious over Aaron. Well, I wasn’t so fortunate when it came to Bertha. I was totally taken by surprise at her ferocity, she seemed like a very nice, harmless little old lady. Either way, her type advantage proved to be too much. Electabuzz managed to take down her Quagsire and even Sudowoodo, but then her Whiscash managed to hit us with a mean fissure, right girl?” Auren looked over to his Electivire, who was listening intently. She nodded in agreement, that attack had hurt! “Anyway, after that I just sort of lost interest in fighting in the league, so I just wondered around for a few years, doing this and that and exploring most of the region.”
“Have ya ever thought about trying again, maybe going up against them now that…” Maylene began, but Auren was already shaking his head.
“Nah, it’s really not important. I know that Tonitrus could beat them all now, and I wouldn’t even have to give her orders to do it.” Auren said, in a matter-of-fact tone of voice.
“Tonitrus?” Maylene asked. “Wait, your Electivire has a name?”
Shit. Did I let that slip? “Umm, yes, she does. Usually I don’t tell people that, though. It’s sort of something only I call her. A lot of people in the world ask too many questions when you treat your Pokemon like people instead of tools or slaves.” Auren answered, nervous about letting it slide.
“They shouldn’t feel that way.” Maylene responded, for the first time her face was very serious, no trace of the smile she had worn for most of their conversation. “Pokemon aren’t tools, they all have personalities and feelings, just like you or me. All of my team members have names, and they’re all very special to me. Tonitrus is a beautiful name,” she said, before looking at the Electivire, “and it fits such a beautiful Pokemon.” At this the Electivire’s eyes widened, and she looked at the floor shyly. Maylene looked back at Auren and smiled again, diffusing any tension. “So, ya really think she could beat all of them?” She said, changing the subject back to the lighter conversation. “That’s a bold claim to make. Now you got me itching to see her in action for myself. I know! How about a rematch? I still have the same team, although a couple of them have changed from when you fought them. I can’t use them in gym battles anymore, as I have to keep lower level Pokemon to fit my gym’s station.”
“I dunno, do you really want to?” He asked, skeptically. “Well, ask Electivire, it’s up to her really. I’m not the one being asked to fight, after all.” Maylene looked over at the Pokemon sitting idly by, who seemed to be thinking the idea over. After a couple of moments she shrugged and stood up, accepting the challenge. “Well, there’s your answer.”
“Awesome! Oh, and Auren? Please, call her by her name. I can tell she likes it way more. I promise, your secret is safe with me.” She said, before standing herself. “This is gonna be so fun!” Auren stood as well, and at that moment his Pokegear began to vibrate. He pulled it out to find the number was unknown, and he knew what that meant.
“One moment, Maylene, I need to take this.” He walked away a bit and answered the phone. A male voice spoke to him quickly and clearly.
“All available information concerning your next job will be sent to you shortly. The document it is sent in has a self consuming worm attached that will activate one hour after being sent. Please read the information, make mental notes, then plan accordingly. Good day.” At this, the man hung up. Auren looked back at the still excited Maylene, who was now sizing up Tonitrus, admiring her fine form. He was actually disappointed knowing he’d have to leave and let her down, for the first time in while he was actually looking forward to a battle with her. He didn’t battle for competition much anymore, it was almost always a life or death matter.
“Maylene, I’m sorry but that was work. I have to go.” Her face dropped for just a second, before she quickly put on a smile, and for the first time Auren knew that it was a fake one. Tonitrus even seemed a bit let down. Auren cursed inwardly, wishing he had never taken this job. “How about a rain check? I’ll see to this job, and I’ll be back within a few weeks. Then I promise to battle you again.” Maylene’s smile became a bit more genuine then, he noted.
“Alright, I’ll let you off this once.” She said. “By the way, what do ya do?”
“Contracting.” He answered. It was a practiced lie. “I work with different companies setting up building sites for companies and residencies alike. It can take any amount of time, but usually a job only takes a couple of weeks.” The last part was true, at least. It usually didn’t take him very long.
“Oh. Well, ok. Do ya need to leave right now? Are you sure ya don’t have time for a battle?” She said, half serious.
“No, we need to get going. I need to get to bed shortly so I can head out in the morning.” He looked back at his Pokegear and realized it was nearly 11 p.m. Time had really flown while he was sitting in the Veilstone gym. He briefly tried to remember the last time he had such a prolonged conversation with another person. He truly couldn’t remember. “It was great catching up, thanks for forcing me into it.” He said jokingly, smiling.
He has a cute smile. Maylene felt her face twinge red a bit at the thought, but quickly caught herself. “Yep, anytime! And ya better come back for a battle, or next time I see ya I’ll kick your ass!” Auren walked over and shook her hand, and this time he noticed that she had a strong grip as well. Not surprising, but still it felt nice to shake someone’s hand as a gesture of friendliness instead of a form of agreement or as a formality.
“Well, I’ll be going then. Come on Elec…Tonitrus.” Maylene smiled when he stopped himself from calling his Pokemon by it’s species. She could tell he wasn’t used to opening up to people, so she thought it was nice that he had trusted her enough to chat with her openly.
“Oh, before you go,“ She called to him before he could get out the door, “swap numbers with me. That way I can contact you anytime, and vice versa.“ Auren didn’t like giving out his personal contact information, but he decided this time it would be fine. After programming her into his Pokegear, they again said their goodbyes. As he walked out the front doors, she found herself hoping that he would make good on his promise and come back to visit.
[I hope you enjoyed your chat, Maylene.] A voice inside her head said genuinely. [You could really use some friends. Oh, and you should have asked before you jumped into challenging him to a battle. She’s holding it back, but I can tell that Electivire is incredibly powerful. After all, I am Aura Pokemon, I can sense things like that.] As he finished this thought, Maylene’s Lucario walked out from around a corner.
“Are you saying ya think we’d lose?” She asked, not used to hearing such an announcement from her strongest team mate.
[I am saying there is no way we could win. I do not know how his Pokemon became so strong. Humans like to categorize their Pokemon by levels, from 1-100. By these standards, however…she is well above that limit. I couldn’t tell you exactly where she would be, but it’s high. Her strength at least doubles my own, and by human classification I’d be level 82.] Maylene’s eyes visibly widened at this.
“So, when he said he knew he could be the Elite Four now…”
[He was being serious. I have no doubt that he could easily beat the Pokemon that they use for League battles. In fact, that may be a reason he doesn’t try again. He may be legally unable to enter her into league approved battles.]
“But then how has she continued to grow stronger?”
[That I do not know. I can sense Auras, I can’t read thoughts. Speaking of Auras, yours seemed to become excited when he smiled at you. Attraction, perhaps?]
“I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t easy on the eyes.” She looked at her Lucario and smiled. “But, there is only one person for me, and ya know I love him dearly.” Her smile grew as his appeared on his face.
[Indeed. He is a very lucky individual.]
“I’m the lucky one, Alistair.”
-------------------------------------
“Target is leaving the Veilstone Gym. He has been there for over four hours, meeting with the leader, Maylene. We may need to run an investigation on her, see if she’s affiliated with him. He doesn’t know it, but we’ve tapped his Pokegear. We can listen in on any of his calls, and see anything he looks at now. We’re ready and waiting for him to make his move.”
“Good. Continue monitoring him. Do not act until you’re sure no one can come to his aid.”
“Yes sir. Luminous Flame, out.”
[Is it almost time to act?]
“If he works the way he normally does, then we’ll act no later than two days from now.”
[Good. My skin is crawling with anticipation.]
“I could help you with that, you know.”
[When the mission is over, you’d better be ready to do just that.]
“Oh I will be, Mercury.”

A/N: Well, that’s it for Chapter 2. I hope the back story I’ve provided at least makes Auren a bit more likeable. I’m obviously not done with his past yet, but I don’t want to rush it all. I enjoyed adding in Maylene, that was sort of last minute thinking. She’s going to be a frequent character later, but I won’t say why! It’s a secret.
Anyway, if you enjoyed it, leave me a review! If you hated it…leave me a review! I can always use criticism.
