“Your nephew?” Kitsune asked.
Haruka said nothing at first, too distracted by Kitsune sitting on one side of her nephew and Naru on the other, with both so close that they were practically in his lap.
“Yes,” she said eventually. “I’d like you to meet my nephew Keitaro Urashima. Keitaro, this is Mitsune Konno, Naru Narusegawa, and that one hanging from the chandelier is Kaolla Su.”
Keitaro, now fully dressed, cast nervous eyes around the room from the blonde monkey girl goggling at him to the girls pinning him to the couch.
“I’m sorry for the trouble I’ve caused,” he began. “I was asked to come here by Granny Hina, though I have no idea why. Especially if she’s travelling as you say.”
Kitsune gave him a pat on the knee while Haruka reached into her back pocket.
“Hina told me you might be coming,” she said. “Told me to give you this letter.”
Keitaro stood up to take the envelope from Haruka, missing Kitsune’s pout. He opened the envelope and removed a paper and a set of keys. He stared down in confusion at the keys before turning his attention to the letter. Kitsune and Naru leaned forward in expectation as he read to himself. After a few minutes he froze, stared at the page, and then held it out for Haruka.
“I can’t be reading this right,” he said. “There must be some mistake.
Haruka took the letter and read aloud, “Dear Keitaro, I am sorry-”
“Skip to the bottom,” Keitaro told her. “The last paragraph.”
“Since I have at last managed to achieve my dream,” Haruka read, “I have decided to help you achieve yours. So, I am appointing you…” Haruka squinted. “I am appointing you manager of the dorm in my absence.”
“Manager?” Kitsune and Naru cried together.
“What’s a manager?” Su asked, jumping to the ground.
“It means he’ll look after the building,” Naru replied. “Is this for real?”
“It’s her handwriting and stamp,” Haruka answered. “And those are definitely her keys. Well at least this will make your commute to school a little easier, Keitaro.”
“School?” Naru blinked. “You’re a student?”
“Well-”
:”That’s right. You must be in second year at Tokyo U by now,” Haruka said.
“Act-”
Kitsune and Naru sprang from the couch. “Tokyo U!”
Keitaro recoiled. “What? No, I-”
“What faculty are you in?” Kitsune asked.
“How hard are the classes?” Naru asked. “How did you do on the entrance exam?”
“I…I…” Keitaro looked at Haruka with pleading eyes.
Haruka stepped between Keitaro and the girls. “Okay, okay, let him breath.”
Naru and Kitsune took their seats with reluctance.
Naru said, “So you’ll want to know where the manager’s room is, then.”
Haruka and Keitaro both looked at Naru in surprise.
“You’ve no objections?” Haruka asked.
Naru shrugged. “If Granny says he’s good enough, then that’s enough for me.”
“Yeah,” Kitsune added. “Especially if he’s from Tokyo U.”
“Um, well about that…” Keitaro tried to say.
“What about Motoko?” Haruka asked, taking a hard look at the stars in Naru’s eyes and the dollar signs in Kitsune’s.
Kitsune and Naru’s faces fell. They looked at each other, but found no answer.
After a while, Naru said, “I guess we’ll just have to deal with her when she gets back. In the mean time I vote that he stays.”
Kitsune raised her hand. “Me too.”
“Me three!” Su shouted.
Haruka searched the girls with her eyes. Something was up. There was no way they should all have agreed that fast. But she shrugged, knowing it was up to Keitaro not her.
“It seems you have the confidence of the house,” she said.
Keitaro looked at his aunt and each girl in turn. He knew he needed to tell the truth, and this moment might be the only chance he’d get. It was on the tip of his tongue to say it, but as he saw the eagerness in everyone’s eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to ruin everything after all he’d been through to get so far.
“Well, if you’ll have me.”
Kitsune and Naru were arm in arm with Keitaro so fast that he wasn’t sure he’d seen them move.
“Great. Let’s show you the manager’s room,” Kitsune said with a wide grin. “Su can you carry his bags?”
“I don’t have any.”
“Oh? Well, then Su you lead the way.”
Su snapped off a salute and bounded towards the stairs. Kitsune and Naru led Keitaro after her.
“Thanks for everything, Haruka,” Naru sang over her shoulder, leaving the confused woman in their wake.
After leaving Keitaro to get settled, Naru and Kitsune held conference in Kitsune’s room. Kitsune handed Naru a sake and turned up her boom box so that they wouldn’t be overheard, before kneeling with her friend.
“Let’s review the situation,” Naru said with solemn expression.
“Agreed,” Kitsune replied, equally serious.
“We have a cute, brilliant, possibly single guy living with us, and there’s nothing Motoko can do about it.” Naru summed up.
Kitsune nodded. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
The pair exchanged grins and a high five that echoed across the hallway.
Kitsune got to her feet and headed for the door declaring, “The game’s afoot.”
“Not so fast.” Naru looked thoughtful. “What say we make it interesting?”
“Meaning?”
“I was thinking we could compete to see which of us can seduce him first before Motoko gets back.”
Kitsune smiled. “Interesting. What qualifies as seduced?”
“Same thing it’s always meant. First one to get him to spend the night with her wins.”
“Wins what?”
Naru rubbed her chin. “I hadn’t thought that far. How about the loser has to do whatever the winner says?”
Kitsune nodded her approval. “Not bad. We need some ground rules though.”
“Such as?”
“This is a friendly wager, right?”
“So?”
“So we treat this like golf. Nobody interferes with the other’s shots.”
“Okay. Anything else?”
Kitsune thought for a moment. “No, I think that covers it.” She stuck out her hand. “We have a wager.”
Naru sealed the handshake as the pair shared a predatory smile. The hunt was on.
