Chapter 2: Put on Those Red Shoes
- TF, Angst
The week, as far as Tsukune was concerned, flew past – in spite of Ms. Nekonome’s terribly uninteresting lectures on feline symbolism in Western literature – and Friday was upon him before he knew it. As he walked with Moka towards the dormitories on Friday afternoon after classes, he felt his insides churning. He had absolutely no idea what to expect from inner Moka. The two teens walked in silence until they reached the entrance of the girls’ dorm. Moka smiled nervously at Tsukune. “I just wanted to tell you,” she began, flushing, “that I’m rooting for you, Tsukune.”They locked eyes. Tsukune took a half-step forward. “Thank you… Moka,” he stammered.“Tsukune,” she replied with a small smile. “I need to get ready. Would you take off… my rosary?” The young man swallowed and reached up to clasp the cold metal.Moka stopped him, though, her soft hand taking his. Both of them stared into each other’s eyes for a long moment once more, their cheeks warming as they leaned closer. The young woman darted her head forward to give her would-be boyfriend a peck on the cheek before she helped him remove the piece of jewelry from her neck.Once the rosary seal on her breast was removed, Moka’s inner vampire was awakened. The sky seemed to darken and even thicken, seeming to Tsukune to become oppressive and difficult to breathe. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end; in her presence, the young man always felt an almost overwhelming terror, a primal fear that urged him to flee as far and as fast as his human legs could carry him. When he looked into her slitted vermilion eyes, though, he knew that he could run only as far as she might feel like pursuing him.The silver-haired young woman smirked. “I never grow tired of seeing that terrified look on your face,” she told him. “We’d best get going. I’d hate to miss the bus, wouldn’t you?” Without waiting for a reply, she turned to head inside. Over her shoulder, she added, “Don’t you dare be late.”Tsukune scrambled back to his room and spent the next half-hour or so choosing his date-night outfit, intent on impressing inner Moka if it was the last thing he did. He dithered over every decision, every detail: navy or khaki slacks, brown or black belt, tie or no tie. He knew, deep down, that each choice he made might influence his success and, ultimately, his happiness; for he could never, ever be happy if he and Moka – outer Moka, specifically – could never be together. He settled on the outfit he wore for his date with Yukari the previous weekend, hoping it would make as strong an impression again. Maybe it’s a lucky outfit, he hoped, or maybe some of Yukari’s magic rubbed off on it somehow. He spent a few minutes polishing his shoes but managed to dash out the door with time to spare. The young man’s heart stopped when he arrived at the bus stop and saw Moka already waiting. She stood by the gnarled tree overlooking the green-tinted bay at the foot of the bluff. Tsukune’s memory flashed back to the first time he met Moka’s inner vampire, in this very spot over a year ago.Today, the circumstances were as utterly different as possible. Instead of her protecting him from a bully, he was about to take her on a date. So much has changed, he ruminated, but how have things changed between her and me? I guess I’m about to find out.As he drew near, the young man swallowed upon seeing the vision that was his date. Moka wore a black strapless dress, perfectly fitted so that it clung to every curve as if for dear life; lower, the dress hung to her ankles, though a slit up the side all the way to mid-thigh looked to provide freedom of movement. On her shoulders and upper arms she wore what appeared to be a long, broad white scarf; from her right shoulder hung her purse. Her lips bore the faintest trace of crimson, which stood out all the more boldly when Tsukune realized that he’d never seen Moka wear any form of makeup before. He forced his eyes not to linger on any one area, not even the bountiful cleavage on display. As his eyes descended, he noticed the feet that had saved his life so many times were currently shod with crimson pumps, a pair of toes peeking from the front leading into the slightest heel in the back. Tsukune looked back up into Moka’s eyes and noticed that, with the added elevation from her shoes, she stood level with him, if not a shade taller. She has such presence, he realized, that I never knew I was actually taller than she is.Moka’s lightly-painted lips curled on one side. “Well, I’ll give you full marks for punctuality,” she teased him. “That’s a good start.”Tsukune laughed lightly, if not wholly sincerely. No pressure, right? he reminded himself. “I’ve been looking forward to showing you around the human world all week,” he said aloud. “Where, exactly, would you like to see?”“Since I’m not usually out unless someone’s ass needs kicking,” she answered, “I thought we might try a little shopping and a little dancing.” Tsukune thought he heard the slightest hesitation from her, but he discounted it as his imagination. The young man scratched the back of his head nervously. “I’m really not much good at dancing,” he warned her, “but it could be fun.” Then again, she might be just as bad as I am, he realized. The teens heard the rumble of the bus’s engine as it exited the tunnel. Tsukune checked his watch – 4:44, right on time. As the bus slowed to a stop and its doors opened, the young man took a deep, steadying breath, allowing Moka to board first. The vampire paused at the top of the steps. “Put out that cigar,” she instructed the driver. “I don’t want my clothes to smell of smoke later.”The bus driver focused his glowing eyes on the young woman, his face as unreadable as always behind his ear-to-ear grin. He met her eyes without flinching and replied, “Say ‘please’.”Moka’s eyes narrowed. She finally uttered, “Please,” to Tsukune’s enduring surprise. The bus driver snuffed the burning end of his cigar in the ashtray and told them, “Welcome aboard.”The two teens boarded the bus and sat roughly halfway between the front and the back, with Moka claiming the window seat. As the bus passed through the tunnel, Tsukune watched her watching the chaotic kaleidoscope of energy that separated the human world from Yokai Academy. He admired her flawless alabaster skin, the delicate point of her chin, the line of her collarbone that led his eye…He tried not to stare. Truly, he tried. The valley between the twin swells of her breasts, though, drew his eyes as surely as a siren’s song might draw his ear. He felt himself starting to stiffen, his pants seeming to tighten uncomfortably.“I suppose I should tell you, Tsukune,” said Moka, bringing Tsukune’s attention back to her lips, “that I had another reason for wanting this.” Outside the window, the tunnel ended and the human world appeared. “I wanted a chance to stretch my legs, so to speak – to do something other than fight for a change.” She sighed thoughtfully.“I thought that might have something to do with it,” he told her. “For the past year, your only purpose has been to fight.” He smiled. “Tonight, your purpose is to have fun, and I promise there won’t be any fighting for you.”She smirked. “I’ll be in your hands, then,” she responded. “I can’t protect myself in the human world without getting expelled – my kicks would be fatal to humans, and not killing humans in the human world with monster power is the school’s Rule Number One.”The bus slowed to a stop shortly, and the teens disembarked. As they did so, the bus driver informed them, “Next trip is at 11:11 tomorrow morning. Have fun!” Before Tsukune could ask, the doors shut and the bus left. The two teens watched it go, their faces reddening as they realized their situation.“What the hell? Are we supposed to stay out all night?” asked the young man.The young woman just squeezed her eyes shut. “Let’s just go shopping. We’ll figure it out later.”~~~~~The next few hours passed much more quickly than Tsukune feared. Moka’s idea of shopping apparently consisted of admiring the look and feel of dresses on the rack, though she did sometimes hold one up against herself in front of the mirror while Tsukune held her purse and shawl (which Moka called a “pashmina”). What struck Tsukune, when he noticed it, was the wistful, even sad look in her eyes. The young man mulled over that as they walked from store to store, with Moka on his arm and sidling surprisingly close to him. At first, he feared: Isn’t she having fun? If she’s not, then why would she be walking so close? Since the dresses are all alike – as far as I can tell, anyway – she obviously doesn’t hate them; but aren’t girls supposed to try things on while shopping?Realization struck the young man and broke his heart for her. She’s sad because there’s not much point in even looking at this stuff; she’ll never get to wear any of them, even if she really likes them. All of them just remind her that the other Moka decides what to wear and what to eat and…… And who her friends are.He glanced over at his date. He could only see her in profile, but he could still see the ghost of sadness in her eyes. Just like that, in that flicker of vulnerability, inner Moka wasn’t so scary anymore. Before, her beauty had given her the mien and air of an apex predator, sovereign and majestic, yet aloof and even capricious. Now…Now she seems much more… human, he thought.“How long do you intend to gawk at me like that?” asked the vampire, shattering the moment. Her eyes seemed to harden, as though she realized that her steely mask had slipped and she were putting it back into place. He looked away, so as not to annoy her – or, at least, not to annoy her further.Nonetheless, Tsukune plucked up some of his courage to ask, “Do you even like us? The Newspaper Club, that is.”Moka scoffed, “They’re a bunch of silly girls, but they’re adequate backup in a scrap.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I don’t much care for them otherwise.”Adequate? Tsukune marveled. Maybe I’ve got a chance after all, if she’s in a good enough mood to call the others ‘adequate.’ “Maybe you could get to know them better,” he offered for her consideration.“Why? They’ve done nothing but get between us – between you and the other me, I mean,” she corrected. Her cheeks flushed slightly.“They’re all important to me,” he answered, “and to the other Moka, too. They’re our friends, and I think they’d wanna be yours as well.”Moka shrugged. “What’s the point? It’s not like I’d be spending much time around them anyway.”Tsukune licked his lips. She’d presented him the opening he’d hoped for. “We could change that, you know,” he told her.Moka’s head whipped to face him. Her eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”“I was just thinking,” he explained, afraid of her response should he anger her, “that maybe we could let you out more often – a few days a week, or a week each month – not just for fighting.” He winced. “Actually, that sounds really bad to ‘let you out.’ What I meant was… uhh… I mean, you’re not a monster… I mean, you are, but you’re not scary… no, wait, you are scary, just…”Moka’s expression shifted multiple times with each backpedal, faster than Tsukune could follow. Finally, she settled on a smirk. “Nice try,” she scolded him, “but you’ll need to do better than saying smooth lines shamelessly like that to gain my approval.”“That’s not why I said that!” he argued. “I just thought… we could all become closer friends if you could be you more often, go to class with us, even write an article or two for the paper.”The young woman’s face softened somewhat. “You’d really want me around?” she murmured. He nodded earnestly. She flushed and told him, “I get what you’re saying and… I really appreciate that, Tsukune.”“Moka,” he whispered, staring into her eyes. She still held her guard up, though not quite as high as before. She leaned toward him and uttered his name again, her eyes drifting shut.“Moka?” he said, unsure what she was planning. Nevertheless, the young man felt himself drawn toward her in return, his cheeks burning. Her lips parted invitingly. Holy crap, Tsukune thought. I think she wants to kiss me! Or maybe, he reasoned, his excitement fading, she wants to try biting me, since it’s usually the other Moka who does that. Oh well – if that’s what she wants…The sudden growl of their stomachs broke the moment. Her eyes snapped open, and Moka took a hasty step backward. “We should get something to eat,” she said, “before I go all ‘chomp-slurp’ on you.”“Good idea,” he agreed with a nervous laugh. As they looked for a vendor, Moka commented, “Not only do you smell delicious, you also smell… manlier… than usual.”“Must be my cologne!” the human lied, but the vampire didn’t pursue it further. I wonder if I smell that way because of last weekend, he mused. Since I have no idea how either Moka would react if I told them, I guess it’s best if I keep it secret for now.~~~~~Fortunately for Tsukune’s blood supply, the teens soon found a takoyaki stand. Tsukune purchased fried shrimp, while Moka opted for fried fish, with an offhand comment about how she “never cared for any cephalopods – too rubbery.” Tsukune just laughed, not having a response to that comment. They ate on a bench together in silence – a comfortable, companionable silence. The bench they had chosen overlooked a river winding its way to the sea. The light of the early-twilight moon played across the surface in scintillating, hypnotic patterns, and the water’s soft babble lulled them into an almost bewitched state. The stars above had yet to emerge in the still-lavender sky, and they would likely remain so, drowned by the lights of the city.Finishing his meal first, Tsukune took the opportunity to observe his date in what (he hoped) was another unguarded moment. If I’m to have any hope of succeeding, he resolved, I have to know if I’ve made any progress thus far. He found himself fixated on her lips – their color and suppleness, of course, but also the way they moved while she ate and the way her pale pink tongue traced along their surface to catch stray crumbs.Moka finished her fish and dabbed her lips with a napkin. “Is there a reason you keep staring at me like that?” she questioned him.“I, uh, I mean,” stammered her date, “I was just… y’know… admiring your beauty!”“As long as you weren’t thinking anything… perverted, I’ll allow that,” she replied. Tsukune thought he saw her cheeks tinge with pink at the mere suggestion, but in the still-awakening city lights he couldn’t be sure.Moka stood and disposed of her trash. “C’mon, Tsukune,” she instructed. “The night’s still young, and we have dancing to do.” She threaded her way through the evening crowds, evidently having spotted a club for them, leaving Tsukune scrambling to catch up to her.At least with her silver hair, the young man mused, there’s not much chance of me losing her in the crowd. He managed to catch up to his date just as she reached the nightclub’s door. Having struggled to keep pace with her but not wanting to show it, he tried not to gasp for air.Moka tossed her hair impatiently. “About time,” she grumbled. “Pay the fee so we can get in.” Caught off-guard, Tsukune fumbled for his wallet, causing Moka to sigh and fold her arms. “Before sunrise, please?”Tsukune finally managed to pay, and the two of them entered the club. Once inside the door, he realized that the bouncer had only charged him for one entry fee. Was he letting Moka in for free? he wondered. I’ve heard that they let beautiful girls into these places without paying. If so, why did Moka wait for me?The air throbbed with bass, but the dance floor stood almost empty. Moka deposited her purse and pashmina with the attendee behind the front counter and strutted straight to the center of the dance floor. The heads of the club’s few patrons followed every one of her steps.Tsukune arrived a few moments later to find her smirking at him. “Now the date begins in earnest, Tsukune,” she informed him, her blood-red eyes twinkling. “Impress me.”__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A/N: Greetings, readers! Another chapter in the books. I neglected to mention in the previous AN that I'll be posting a chapter each week until all chapters are posted. As mentioned in the warnings, the story is completed - I just want to space out the updates to give as many people as possible a chance to read each chapter. I'll shoot for Wednesdays as the update day, but one week soon will be early and the following will be late due to an upcoming unplugged vacation. At any rate, I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter - if so (or if not), please let me know via rating, reviewing, or PMing me on the forums!
