Chapter 2: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Vampires but Were Afraid to Ask
Once the Newspaper Club members had all gone their separate ways for the evening, Tsukune and Moka walked side by side under the fading sunlight towards the female students’ dormitory. The leaves of the trees on campus were just beginning to turn, scattering small splotches of color amongst the green canopies. Soon, they knew, those isolated pockets would override the trees entirely and transform the campus into a patchwork of reds, yellows, and oranges.Moka sidled up to her human friend as they neared the building. Excitement and nerves warred within her. The feelings from kissing Tsukune’s neck earlier had haunted her all day, hovering in the back of her mind most distractingly. She knew what she wanted – to become one with Tsukune – but she had no idea how to go about it.Entering the girls’ dorm felt to Tsukune like treading on hallowed ground – strange and wonderful and awe-inspiring and nerve-wracking all at once. He, like Moka, still felt the residual effects of… of whatever had happened this morning, and the thought of visiting her room was bringing those feelings back to the forefront of his mind from the corner he’d shoved them into during the school-day in order to function. Adding to his anticipation, Moka had promised him an explanation for this morning’s incident, an explanation which the young man was all too ready to hear. The corridors as they walked were largely empty, creating a hush that only enhanced the atmosphere, filling both teens with the sense they were doing something naughty despite the fact that curfew was still hours away. Moka reminded herself that it was dinner-time, so most of the girls were either eating at the cafeteria or cooking in their rooms. Tsukune was simply glad they didn’t encounter any girls en route to or from bathing.Moka ushered her guest into her room, where they removed their shoes. The young woman walked to her closet and hung up her jacket. Tsukune stood and fidgeted, completely out of his depth, unsure about the exact protocol to follow while inside the bedroom of the woman of his dreams.I’m not even sure where to look! he fretted. If I stare at her, it’s creepy. If I look around, I’m prying like my nosy cousin Kyoko. If I stare at the floor, I feel awkward. He sighed inwardly. I might as well face it – I’m awkward.“Please, Tsukune,” called Moka, breaking into his building panic, “let me get your jacket. And don’t be afraid to sit at my desk while I make us something to eat.”The young man smiled, relieved. He handed his jacket to his hostess, who hung it in her closet on a spare hanger. While she busied herself in the kitchenette adjoining the living space, Tsukune sat at the desk by the window, from which he could see his own room. He and Moka had gazed longingly at one another across the expanse of between the girls’ and boys’ dorms on many a sleepless night in the past. Never did he dream that he would occupy this spot he’d stared at so often, especially not with the slightest chance of confessing to Moka how he felt about her.Returning his focus to the present, the young man noticed the few framed photos on Moka’s desk. None featured inner Moka, though that wasn’t entirely surprising given how long she’d been sealed away. Still, it might’ve been nice to see what she was like before being sealed, he mused resignedly. Did she used to smile more? Or has she always been aloof and cold? One photo featured Kokoa making a rude face; given the younger sister’s recent, at-best-grudging acceptance of outer Moka’s existence, he thought it may have been taken recently and against the younger girl’s wishes. Tsukune smiled when he saw the photo, identical to the one on his desk, of the Newspaper Club at the end of last year, the girls’ smiles all tinged with a hint of sadness – probably because they knew they wouldn’t see me for a while, he realized. Moka’s father, mother, and home were all strangely absent from the photographic record.A lilting voice pulled his attention away. “Sorry it’s not much,” Moka apologized as she brought over a plate with some rice-balls. “I didn’t know what you’d like, and usually this is all I eat in the evenings.” The vampire girl wore an apron over her uniform; Tsukune fought the urge to picture her wearing only the apron, a recurring fantasy of his.Red-faced, he thanked her. He added for emphasis, “Don’t worry about it. Anything you would’ve made would be great, I’m sure.”Moka smiled shyly. “I wasn’t really sure what foods you like best, either,” she admitted as she sat on the floor beside the desk, “even after all this time we’ve known each other. I guess I’m not very perceptive.”“It’s okay, really,” Tsukune repeated with a shrug as he sat on the floor with her. “I’m not too choosy when it comes to food, and I’m grateful to you for making these.” To reinforce his words, he took a bite from one of the rice-balls.Moka smiled and followed his lead. Silence reigned while they ate. Both had the same thought: Gourmet cooking isn’t what we came here for anyway.Once they finished eating, Moka bit her lip, uncertain how to proceed. Tsukune smiled at her softly, reassuringly, but that didn’t help her. Her thoughts raced back to when they first met, that first week of their first-year classes, and that near-disastrous argument that almost sent Tsukune home and removed him from her life forever.“I hate humans,” she’d confided.“I don’t need monsters for friends!” he’d shouted. They’d made up, of course, and become friends, defying both their statements. He’d added new friends, all monsters. She’d begun to think she could live in the human world, if Tsukune was by her side; at her most optimistic, she even hoped that both worlds, human and monster, could reconcile and live in peace – together. She wondered if he thought that way too; most of the time, she believed he did.Right now, though, she doubted. At this moment, she feared. What if he can accept monsters as friends, but not as… girlfriends?Without prodding from the rosary’s occupant, she steeled herself. Don’t be an idiot, she chided herself. If that were so, he wouldn’t have let my other self go so far. If he didn’t like what she did, he wouldn’t still want her around more often.Tsukune’s brow furrowed. What a strange, almost scary look she has, he mused. She almost looks like the other Moka. “Moka,” he asked softly, “what is it?”Moka blinked away her self-doubt and focused on the sweet, kind, wonderful human boy she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. “I, uh, was just… gathering my thoughts,” she replied. “I don’t want what I say to… make things weird between us.”Tsukune smiled easily, earnestly. “If it does,” he responded, “I hope it’s a good weird.”Moka giggled, but quickly resumed her more serious expression. “I promised you an explanation for those scars on your neck,” she began, “so I’ll tell you what Kokoa told me – the other me, that is. For vampires, biting apparently can be used for more than just feeding; it can also be used to mark one’s partner.”The young man’s brow furrowed again. “Mark?” he repeated incredulously. “What does that mean?”“Well,” the vampire answered with a blush, “it says to other vampires, ‘Don’t touch; this is mine.’ That’s why the bite marks stayed.”Tsukune rubbed the still-tender spot on his neck gingerly. “What does that mean, exactly?” he asked, his voice colored with concern. “Am I her slave now or something?”“No, nothing like that,” answered Moka. She tapped the tips of her forefingers together, a gesture Tsukune recognized as signifying just how nervous she felt about what she had to say next. “It expressed her feelings for you,” she finally managed, her voice soft.“She could have just said something,” the human boy grumbled good-naturedly.Moka pursed her lips. “She couldn’t help it,” she defended her other persona. “It’s vampire instinct.”At that moment, the exact wording Moka used registered in Tsukune’s mind. “Feelings… for me? You mean, the inner Moka was… confessing to me?”The pink-haired Moka in front of him looked down, biting her lip. “I… think so,” she answered tentatively. “I’m not sure. Even to me, she didn’t admit it directly, but she didn’t deny it either. Maybe she doesn’t even know herself.” She shrugged helplessly.Tsukune mulled over that for a bit, considering the implications regarding how, despite sharing a body, even outer Moka didn’t understand the inner one all that well. Putting that thought aside, he remembered the incident that morning. “The mark didn’t keep you away,” he observed. “Does this mean I’m yours, as well?” He flushed. The vampire of his dreams flushed as well. “I… I wouldn’t mind… Tsukune.” She smiled shyly and scooted closer to him.The young man’s heart leapt into his throat as he murmured her name. Their faces inched closer together. His lips felt dry, his palms sweaty.Moka’s eyes drifted shut. She whispered Tsukune’s name when she felt his breath tickle her lips. Her heart raced, seemingly on the verge of erupting from her chest at any moment. The young man uttered “Moka” once more, nearly inaudibly. His whole self ached to finally, finally make this connection with the girl he’d fallen for at first sight. He begged whichever deities would listen that she wasn’t setting him up to bite him, as usual. Both teens nearly jumped when their lips made contact, as though a bolt of lightning passed from one to the other and back. Tsukune’s mind whirled. Moka felt her stomach twisting in the beginning stages of what she’d come to recognize as deep-seated desire. They remained thus for some time, locked in a kiss somehow both passionate and chaste. Their fingers met and intertwined. The young woman snuggled against the young man and sighed her contentment without breaking the kiss.Eventually, the need for air necessitated the end of their long-awaited first kiss. Both panted and gasped greedily for air, his brown eyes locked with her glittering seafoam set. Both blushed and beamed.“Th-Thank you, Tsukune,” Moka stammered. “M-My first kiss was… wonderful,” she admitted with a self-conscious giggle.“I’m glad to hear that,” he replied as his heart soared. “Would you… like another?”The young woman nodded eagerly but didn’t lean in again. “After we study together,” she explained. “I invited you over for that, so I think we should actually do it.”Both teens’ eyes widened at her choice of words. To defuse the tension somewhat, Tsukune conceded, “You’re probably right. That midterm’s coming up soon!”He started to get up to get his textbook, but he paused. “One more question: What about when you… kissed my neck this morning?” he asked, the question having hung in the back of his mind all day. “What was that all about? It felt… well, it made me remember… what happened with me and inner Moka.” He cleared his throat self-consciously.“Honestly… I don’t know. Kokoa didn’t say anything about that part,” answered the vampire as sincerely as she could. “I, uh, didn’t feel anything specific like that, but it was… pleasant for me too.” She blushed furiously now. “Maybe I’ll… kiss the spot again later?”Tsukune swallowed nervously. Knowing he really needed to study, he didn’t dwell on the thought of Moka’s lips on him again. However, that didn’t keep the thought from lingering in the back of his mind once more. For her part, Moka also fought to keep the thoughts of kissing Tsukune’s neck from taking center stage in her thoughts. The effort proved about as futile, or about as successful, as the young man’s similar efforts. Though it was, to her, couched purely in sensations, the anticipation of experiencing them again tied her stomach in knots and igniting the embers of her passion. Her thighs rubbed together subconsciously.“We should really focus hard on studying,” she said, as much for herself and for Tsukune. “The sooner we start, the sooner we’ll be finished.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
