Rain
Chapter 21:Quiet

The ship was eerily quiet. It felt unnatural now, this silence. But as soon as she left, it came to . Wh. Where she’d gone? Hell if he knew. The only good thing about he being absent is that smoking was allowed in the living room again. Not tha car cared, for her he would have quit. Jet sighed and looked out over the navigation deck, she had spent a lot of time here, it’d become her sanctuary at times, much like the kitchen had been her domain.

[Flashback]

“Vicious is,” she stated.

“WHAT?!” Spike’s voice bellowed.

“You’re kidding,” Jet snorted.

Rain looked at him with her large, storm colored eyes. He could always see if she was serious or not through her eyes. The grey depths held all seriousness, she wasn’t playing around.

“When’d it happen?” Jet asked softly, his voice trying to hide the hurt he felt.

“After I left. I was on Mars, and upset, I drank until I couldn’t remember my name. The next thing I remember was waking up in a hotel room that I didn’t have, and him next to me. We came to an agreement then. I’d leave, tell no one, and he’d leave me alone. It was a good deal. Then, I found out I was pregnant. As soon as I was able, I tested for the paternity. It could have been one of the three of you. Luckily, you are all on file, I didn’t need to supply anything. When it came up as Vicious, I had them test again. One stupid, drunken mistake and I get knocked up. I came here as soon as I found out. I was gonna hide it, never tell you. But lying never was my thing,” Rain explained.

“Oh, Rain,” Faye gasped.

“And what do you expect we say now? It’s alright that you slept with an evil, Machiavellian, bastard?” Spike asked, his voice low and tense.

Rain hardened her expression and turned to the mossy haired man. “Don’t you dare judge me, Spiegal. You have no right.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” he asked as he leapt to his feet.

“Had you kept yourself away from Julia, all this shit may have never happened!”

“Don’t you dare bring her into this!”

“Will you two cut it out? You’re acting like children!” Jet growled.

“I don’t care how I’m acting! She slept with my only true enemy and now she baring his fucking kid! Not to mention that she’s rubbing it in my face!” Spike argued.

“This isn’t about you, Spike. Why is it that you always have to take everything that involves my life personal?” Rain shot.

“Because you’re my friend, not to mention you keep doing this self-destructive shit! You always end up with him, and then he hurts you. Why do you always go back?” Spike asked.

Rain’s eyes grew steely. “I don’t go to him, he always seems to find me. It’s my problem, I’ll deal with it my way.”

“Deal with it how?” Jet asked.

“We have… an agreement. He stays away, and I don’t kill him.”

“And we all know how keen he is on keeping his promises,” Spike grumbled.

Rain glared at Spike. “Like you’re one to talk.”

“Don’t start acting like you used to,” Spike said.

“I was better off then. I had no complications then.”

Jet looked deeply into Rain’s eyes, they were so empty now, so cold and arrogant. “So, this is what the eyes of a dragon look like.”

Rain stiffened. “No, these are the eyes of a woman that’s sick of being judged for things she couldn’t control.”

“I don’t know what to say about you. I thought… I thought you were… you’re not the same person,” Jet said, finally finding the words.

Rain’s eyes looked hurt for a moment, before setting back into their cold mask. “I’ll leave, if that’s what you want.”

Spike gasped. “Rain…”

“No, I understand now. I’ve caused you all so much pain. You’re all too important for that. I’ll go,” she said as she stood.

“Where will you go?” Faye asked.

“Home,” she answered as she left the room.

[End Flashback]

Home. Once she had thought the ship her home. It was his fault. He’d pushed her away. He sighed heavily as he exhaled a plume of silver smoke. He was smoking one of her cigarette packs that she’d left behind. She’d quit, since she was pregnant, so she’s left them. He breathed in the rich scent of the smoke. There was vanilla in there, maybe a little clove. It was her smell. All he needed was the scent of falling rain and it would be like she never left. No, scratch that, it’d be like she’d just left.

Slowly he walked through the ship, passing the kitchen where she taught him how to make his dishes edible. He smiled as he remembered her musical laughter as he burned yet another attemThe The way her eyes sparkled when he’d finally gotten a recipe right. Gods, he missed her.

“Oh, don’t you dare start with me, Faye!” Spike’s shouting voice broke through his memories.

“Shut up you bastard! You have no idea what she’s going through!” Faye shouted back.

“Oh, and you do?” Spike asked, his voice seemed laced with frustration and anger.

“Yeah, I do.”

“And how’d you gain that kind of experience, Faye?” Spike asked.

Jet started for the living area, wanting to shut the two of them up before Faye started throwing things at Spike. They were constantly fighting now, both at odds about Rain’s leaving, and Spike’s rotten attitude.

“Because I just found out that I’m pregnant you bastard!” she screamed.

Spike paused. “Huh?”

Jet froze. ‘What?’ he asked mentally as he entered the room, just to see Spike faint to the floor with a resounding plop. Faye was standing there, frozen in shock at her own words. Jet watched as tears started to build in her emerald eyes. ‘Oh, man, Spike! You screwed up big time!’ he mentally berated the unconscious man as he walked over to the trembling woman. “Faye?” he called.

Faye moved slowly, her eyes wide. “Y-you heard?”

Jet nodded. “Yeah, I heard. How far along are you?”

Faye sniffed, trying to hold back her tears. “Three weeks.”

Jet flashed a smile. “At least now we know that damned crib is gonna get used,” he joked.

Faye choked out a laugh before running into the larger man’s arms, letting herself cry into his chest. “I don’t know what I’m going to do!” she wept.

“Shh, it’s okay. I’m here for ya. You’re not going to be alone,” he comforted.

“Not like she is, you mean?” Faye asked, her voice muffled in his chest.

“No, I’m not going to abandon you, not like I did her.”

“Do you regret it?” the violet haired woman asked.

“Yeah, I do. I’m sure the moron over there does too. He’s not gonna leave you wither, Faye. Not if I can help it. It’s his right?”

Faye nodded. “Unlike some women I know, I tend to stay in one guy’s bed,’ she said, her voice laced with a little venom.

“Hey, don’t talk like that. From what I’ve heard about her past, sex was the only way to…”

“To be free,” Faye finished.

“Just like running away and stealing all my money is to blow off gambling is to you!” Jet teased.

“Ha, ha, very funny, Jet. Should we just leave him?” she asked, glanced down as Spike’s prone form.

“Yeah, he’ll be fine,” the older man replied as he led her up the stairs to the sleeping area.

“Jet?” Faye asked as she approached her door.

“Hm?”

“She’ll come back. I mean, she always has before,” Faye said as she went inside her room and closed the door.

“I don’t know, Faye. I really don’t know,” he sighed as he bid her good night, taking the long walk down to his room. Yeah, the place had become way too quiet.
