Chapter 21
Natsu's Weakness
Back in Edolas, Natsu walked away from the treelike guild with fast steps and a grim face. He glanced briefly at the misty sky to figure out which way was east, then headed that way with plodding footsteps thumping in anger.
Lucy Ashley shouted as she stormed out of the guild and ran to catch up with him. "You goddamn bastard, come back here!"
"Not this time, Ashley," he growled. "You've pushed it too far."
"It was just a kiss," she yelled in exasperation.
"You climbed into my bed and practically had me undressed before I could wake up. That's sexual harassment where I come from."
"I thought it was something you'd like. Heartfilia told me you used to sneak into her bed all the time."
"That's different. I only fell asleep beside her. I didn't try to rape her."
"What? Rape?" she shrieked, jogging after him. "Okay, now you've gone too fucking far. All I did was kiss you and unbutton your shirt. Don't you dare accuse me of rape just for that."
"You were jerking my … my thing."
She put her hands on her hips. "It's called a dick. Or a cock. Or we could get clinical and call it a penis. Quit acting like a fucking ten-year-old."
He spun back around with fiery eyes. "You were touching it, and you were kissing me, all without my permission. That's the third time you've kissed me, and each time you do it, I tell you no. I'm sick of it! I've already told Wendy to back off, and she has, but you haven't! You need to calm the hell down and leave me alone." He stormed off again. "Dammit, I don't want to be here anymore. I'm sick of running away every time the Fairy Hunters come after us. I'm sick of not having enough magic to do anything useful. I miss my friends. I miss Happy. I'm worried about him. I need to find a way home, and you guys aren't helping."
"We're trying…"
"Not hard enough," he barked, swinging his arm out in fury. "If you guys aren't going to help me, I'll find someone who will. If I can get to the capitol, maybe King Jellal can figure something out. He was a member of Earthland's Fairy Tail after all, an S-Class wizard, even if he had no magic of his own. Still, he was insanely powerful and a brilliant fighter. If he's anything like Earthland's Jellal, then he'll also know the importance of friendship."
Edo-Lucy stomped her foot furiously. "Friendship? I thought we were friends too. I thought you said you love the people in this guild."
"I do, but—"
She marched up to him and sneered right into his face. "We might be different from the people in Earthland, but we sure as hell know the importance of friendship. Even if we're from different dimensions, we are Fairy Tail!" she yelled. "I'm not ready to give you up to Knightwalker and that damn King Jellal. I am not letting you go that easily, Natsu."
She grabbed the back of his head, yanked him in forcefully, and kissed him hard on the lips. Natsu flailed, pushed her away, and retreated while wiping his mouth.
"See, my Lucy isn't like this. My Lucy blushes over the stupidest things. My Lucy gets tongue-tied at just the thought of a boy liking her. My Lucy—"
"How is it you like her so much more than you like me, but I like you way the hell more than I like our own Natsu?" she screamed.
"Maybe you never gave your Natsu the chance he needed … just like I never told Lucy how I feel."
"How you … feel?" Edo-Lucy took a step back with a pained look in her eyes. "Does this mean you have feelings for her? Do you … do you love her?"
"No!" he yelled, but Natsu suddenly looked confused. He glanced around at the weird plants of Edolas, anything but looking into the face he knew so well. "I … I dunno," he mumbled, and his face sank down into the folds of his scarf. "I don't know if it's love or something else. I … I just don't know." Talking about something like that to the woman who had Lucy's face was simply too awkward. "I need to get back to her, to everyone. Maybe I can figure this thing out once I'm home. It's no use thinking about it on my own when I don't even know what Lucy thinks." Natsu straightened his scarf and began to walk away.
Edo-Lucy watched him go, and her bottom lip quivered. She slammed her eyes shut and turned her face away. "Idiot," she whispered in frustration. Then with bold determination, she shouted, "I like you!"
Natsu never even paused. "Too bad."
She stomped her foot in rage. "Oh, come on! I just confessed, and you're not even going to give me a proper reply?"
"If I thought you were serious, maybe I would."
"I am serious, asshole!"
He stopped, spun around, and looked directly at her. "Sorry, but I can't return your feelings. Just forget about me."
"Fuck you!"
"Can't you accept a proper rejection?" He turned right back around, wrapped his scarf a little closer around his neck, and continued on. "I hope it's not too far to Royal City."
Edo-Lucy's fists tightened, and she had half a mind to pound him into the dirt. Suddenly, something dawned on her. "The scarf!"
Natsu paused in mid-step, still tugging on the scarf in the misty coldness.
"All this time, I've been trying to figure out your weak point. It's your scarf. You never take it off. It's exactly like my Natsu and his goggles. I bet that scarf was a gift from your father Igneel, right?"
Natsu turned around and stared hard at her. "Do you think you know Dragion that well? Tell me, Ashley: have you ever gone riding with him?"
"What? You mean in his car? Not if I could help it," she sneered. "The guy turns into a maniac when he drives. I heard he made out with Levy, Wendy, Mira, Laki, and Juvia in the backseat of his damn car. Once, he felt up my leg. I beat the shit out of him for doing it."
"He gets confidence, like I feel confidence when I'm wearing my scarf. It's not his goggles that are his weakness. It's his car, or the lack of it, and you guys haven't even bothered to try fixing it for him. You really should, and when he comes back, you should go riding with him. See him for who he truly is."
She folded her arms and looked away. "No good anyway. We have no fuel here. The poor guy has been lost without the ability to drive."
"Then maybe instead of blasting him into other dimensions, you should help him with his vehicle. If you have no fuel, find alternatives. Or design a car that can run on other fuels. I mean, from what I've seen, you've replaced the magical weapons of every member of this guild with practical ones, yet that car Dragion loves so much is still sitting in the garage, broken and unusable. That's his weapon! It's his strength and his weakness. You should help him rebuild it, or if you can't, then help him find confidence in other things. If I lost my scarf, I'd be traumatized, but I know I could still fight and have fun with my friends. That's all I need in life. If Other-Me doesn't feel like he even has that, then I wonder if he'll want to come back to you guys."
"What?" she bellowed. "Of course he would. Why wouldn't he?"
Natsu kept on walking away but gave an exaggerated shrug. "For the same reason I don't want to stay with you guys. If Lucy was mean to me all the time, I'd want to up and leave too." He rethought that. "No, I'd still stay because of Lisanna and Erza, only because I know they like me and need me. Other-Me doesn't have those two around here, and he lacks confidence. If he really feels like he's not making any contribution to this guild, and all he hears is what you say about him being weak and useless … hell, I'd definitely consider leaving, no matter how much I love Fairy Tail. A guild is only good if you feel like you're wanted."
Her mouth hung open in disbelief. "But … we do want him. We need him. He's one of us."
"Then maybe you should have told him that from the start. Maybe instead of building wormhole devices that don't work right, you should have focused on something easier, like fixing his car." He kept on walking away. "Stop trying so hard to integrate me into your guild and put that focus on switching the two of us back. From what I can see, you all have given up on him, abandoned him. You guys like me better, right? That's what everyone keeps telling me, that I'm a better fighter, I'm stronger, I'm more fun. So what incentive is there to rescue him?"
"Because he's our friend, dammit!"
"Then treat him like one. Stop trying to replace him with me."
She dropped her head as his words struck her deeply. Had she really given up on Fireball? Yes, she had tried to bring Salamander in, treat him like she would Fireball, but … had she given up so easily? Why?
"Wait," she said softly. Natsu stopped and turned back around. "You're right, I … I guess I've been putting my priorities in the wrong place. It's just … I honestly do like you. I'm not so sure Fireball would like me, so I kinda hoped you would."
"Does that mean you also like him? Have you two ever tried going on a date?"
"What? Who'd want to date him?" she snapped defensively.
Natsu was stumped for a moment. He had heard those words before. "I just remembered," he muttered in shock and sadness. "I said those same words to Lucy just before getting sent here."
Ashley blinked in surprise. "Wow, that's surprisingly harsh of you, Salamander."
"Hey! You just said the same thing."
"But I wouldn't say it to Fireball's face. Sheesh, Other-Me must think you really dislike her as a woman. So why don't you give up on her?" Her hand slithered up his muscular arm. "If you don't want to date a timid girl like her, maybe you'd consider someone stronger. You're my type, so that must mean I'm your type."
"A lady who bullies others around, sexually harasses men, and beats people up for fun? Sorry, I'm not into sadistic girls. If you treat Dragion like you treat me, no wonder he doesn't like you."
Her face flinched at that. "You … really don't like me?"
He sighed and looked aside. "I like that you're strong and can take care of yourself. Lucy—my Lucy—is strong in her own way, but she always depends on others, either her Celestial Spirits or her friends. It's not annoying, but sometimes I wish she wasn't so squeamish. Lucy is gentle, bashful, timid at times, but she's absolutely brilliant, and she never gives up, even if she knows the enemy is stronger than her. That is true courage! She likes me for who I am. She's still friends with me, although I know I annoy her sometimes, like how Dragion must feel annoyed about you. Still, she's always smiling, even when I do crazy stuff or put her in danger. That's what I like about her."
"But my Natsu doesn't like me," she mumbled. "So would your Lucy like you?"
Natsu thought about it. "I dunno. Maybe not. Maybe if I want to have a chance with her, I have to change, be less destructive, like you need to be less abusive toward your Natsu."
Lucy Ashley laughed wryly. "You and I are so much alike, Salamander. I bet our alternate selves get along perfectly. Two timid but strong-in-their-own-way lovebirds! Hell, if I was her, I wouldn't want to give up Fireball. That idiot makes the perfect fuckin' husband! Yet if Heartfilia is like me, she wants you back, if only because you're her friend and she misses you. Both of us would rather have both you and Fireball to ourselves."
"I don't do threesomes," Natsu said bluntly.
That made Edo-Lucy laugh loudly. "You've got a perverted mind after all, Dragneel. I like that. I like you. A lot," she admitted with a blush. "I have to confess, I don't want to let you go."
He sighed in frustration and looked away. "Ashley…"
"I wonder if Other-Me sort of likes my Natsu as well. Hell, if it was me, and I found someone exactly my type…" She eyed Natsu up and down. "…I'd ravage him!"
Natsu's face darkened. "Lucy wouldn't do that."
Ashley had a mischievous gleam in her eyes. "Are you sure about that? She and I aren't total opposites. I think she would," she said, purely to tease him. "Hell, I'd cheer her on. My Natsu needs to get laid, and he's definitely her type."
"Well, too bad," Natsu said stubbornly. "She's my Lucy. I ain't giving her up to anyone, not to Gray, not to Loke, and not to another version of myself."
Edo-Lucy laughed softly and muttered, "You probably don't even know what you're saying, idiot. Besides, you're the one who said no one would want to date her. Of course she'd think that includes you, most of all."
"But I…" Natsu cut off his words and looked aside in frustration. "Dammit." He really had said that, so it only made sense that Lucy would take his words that way. Why had something so belittling been one of the last words for her to hear him say?
The blonde sighed and stared around at the misty sky. "That other version of me sounds popular with the guys. She's one lucky girl. And you sound jealous, Mister I-don't-know-if-I-like-her-or-not."
Natsu blushed and hid down into his scarf again. "It's not that. She's my friend, and I don't want him to break her heart."
"You Natsus definitely are the heart-breaker types," she said with a weak smile. She blushed and let out a soft sigh, realizing she also felt a little jealous of Lucy Heartfilia. A refined lady like that was probably exactly what Natsu Dragion loved, whereas a rough bitch like her was probably the reason why Fireball tried to spend most of his time out riding, staying far away from the guild. "They're a little too perfect for each other, dammit! I bet those two are sleeping together by now."
Natsu clenched his teeth, and his fists tightened until the veins popped up on his hands.
"Ooh, look who's jealous!" Edo-Lucy leaned in closer, goading him on. "Yep, I bet they get along real well. I bet she takes him for a ride, if you know what I mean. Besides, do you even know how to pleasure her? I could teach you. After all, our bodies are exactly the same."
"No," he rejected without even a second thought. "I'll go home, and I'll figure this thing out, whatever it is. I'm not gonna mess around with you merely out of curiosity. Lucy isn't like that either. If she and Dragion do hook up, it'd be because she likes him, and I'd support that."
"Like hell you would."
"I would! If Lucy ever said she was in love with someone, if it makes her happy, I'd cheer her on."
Edo-Lucy gave a plaintive sigh. "You're the sort of bastard who actually would do that. Tell ya what. We'll find a way to get you to the capitol. If you try to walk, it'll take you all month."
"I've been waiting for weeks," he snapped.
"I know, and I'm sorry." She looked aside with feelings of frustration from all the conflicting emotions, and she hated that her cheeks felt hot. "Come back to the guild. I'll get Levy started on the transporter, even if I have to whip her into fixing it."
Natsu followed her back. "Ya know, you're sorta cute when you blush like that."
Her eyes narrowed. "Say a word about it to the guild and I will personally slice out your tongue."
Natsu laughed. "But you sound a lot more like Erza. Hey, do you like cake?"
"I … w-well," she stuttered. "Yeah, I do."
"Awesome. Lisanna taught me a really good recipe for strawberry cake so I can appease Erza whenever I do something to make her mad. I'll fix it for you," he said, grinning widely.
Edo-Lucy hated to admit that her face felt even hotter seeing that joyful smile of his.
"You better stop it," he laughed. "You're looking cute again."
"Shut up!" she snapped. Then she grumbled, "So, you like the blushing sorts, huh?"
He shrugged. "Dunno. Maybe."
"Natsu's really cute when he blushes. I like that about him. If Lucy Heartfilia is my opposite, it means she likes aggressive boys. She'd definitely fall for you."
"If she does, that's great, but if not then I'll be happy just being her friend."
She glanced over, not believing him, until she saw the look in his face. Natsu truly did look like he would be happy with remaining just friends with the Celestial Spirit summoner. "You're one weird bastard, Salamander."
Natsu grinned widely. "Thanks!"
